The kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (kSZ) and patchy screening effect are two complementary cosmic microwave background (CMB) probes of the reionization era. The kSZ effect is a relatively strong signal, but is difficult to disentangle from other sources of temperature anisotropy, whereas patchy screening is weaker but can be reconstructed using the cleaner polarization channel. Here, we explore the potential of using upcoming CMB surveys to correlate a reconstructed map of patchy screening with (the square of) the kSZ map, and what a detection of this cross-correlation would mean for reionization science. To do this, we use simulations and theory to quantify the contributions to this signal from different redshifts. We then use the expected survey properties for CMB-S4 and CMB-HD to make detection forecasts. We find that, for or our fiducial reionization scenario, CMB-S4 will obtain a hint of this signal at up to 1.8$σ$, and CMB-HD will detect it at up to 14$σ$. We explore the physical interpretation of the signal and find that it is uniquely sensitive to the first half of reionization and to the bispectrum of the ionized gas distribution.
Anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) can be induced during the later stages of cosmic evolution, and in particular during and after the Epoch of Reionisation. Inhomogeneities in the ionised fraction, but also in the baryon density, in the velocity fields and in the gravitational potentials are expected to generate correlated CMB perturbations. We present a complete relativistic treatment of all these effects, up to second order in perturbation theory, that we solve using the numerical Boltzmann code SONG. The physical origin and relevance of all second order terms are carefull…
The key to understand the nature of dark energy relies in our ability to probe the distant Universe. In this framework, the recent detection of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect signature in the cosmic microwave background obtained with the South Pole Telescope (SPT) is extremely useful since this observable is sensitive to the high-redshift diffuse plasma. We analyse a set of cosmological hydrodynamical simulation with 4 different realisations of a Hu & Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity model, parametrised by the values of $\overline{f}_{\rm R,0}=(0,-10^{-6},-10^{-5},-10^{-4})$, to compute t…
Using the novel semi-numerical code for reionization AMBER, we model the patchy kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect by directly specifying the reionization history with the redshift midpoint $z_\mathrm{mid}$, duration $Δ_\mathrm{z}$, and asymmetry $A_\mathrm{z}$. We further control the ionizing sources and radiation through the minimum halo mass $M_\mathrm{h}$ and the radiation mean free path $λ_\mathrm{mfp}$. AMBER reproduces the free electron number density and the patchy kSZ power spectrum of radiation-hydrodynamic simulations at the target resolution ($1\,{\rm Mpc}/h$) with matched rei…
We discuss the secondary cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy due to kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect from ionized bubbles around individual quasars prior to the reionization of the Universe. The bubbles create local ionization modulations which move with the large scale structure linear bulk flow and act as sources for kSZ. We improve upon previous calculations of this effect, using a halo model based description of quasar abundance, and find that the kSZ distortion power spectrum, $C_\ell$, from the bubbles to be sub-dominant to kSZ from patchy reionization driven by galaxies.…
We study cross-correlations of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (kSZ) and 21 cm signals during the epoch of reionisation (EoR) to measure the effects of patchy reionisation. Since the kSZ effect is proportional to the line-of-sight velocity, the kSZ-21 cm cross correlation suffers from cancellation at small angular scales. We thus focus on the correlation between the kSZ-squared field (kSZ$^2$) and 21 cm signals. When the global ionisation fraction is low ($x_e\lesssim 0.7$), the kSZ$^2$ fluctuation is dominated by rare ionised bubbles which leads to an anti-correlation with the 21 cm sig…
Analyzing the cosmic variance limit of remote dipole measurements of the cosmic microwave background using the large-scale kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect
We show that, in the context of patchy reionisation, an accurate description of the angular power spectrum of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect is not possible with simple scaling relations between the amplitude of the spectrum and global parameters, such as the reionisation midpoint and its duration. We introduce a new parameterisation of this spectrum, based on a novel description of the power spectrum of the free electrons density contrast Pee (k,z) in terms of the reionisation global history and morphology. We directly relate features of the spectrum to the typical ionised bubble…
We propose a novel technique to separate the late-time, post-reionization component of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect from the contribution to it from a (poorly understood and probably patchy) reionization history. The kSZ effect is one of the most promising probe of the {\em missing baryons} in the Universe. We study the possibility of reconstructing it in three dimensions (3D), using future spectroscopic surveys such as the Euclid survey. By reconstructing a 3D template from galaxy density and peculiar velocity fields from spectroscopic surveys we cross-correlate the estimator ag…

The thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect induces a Compton-$y$ distortion in cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps that is sensitive to a line of sight integral of the ionized gas pressure. By correlating the positions of galaxies with maps of the Compton-$y$ distortion, one can probe baryonic feedback processes and study the thermodynamic properties of a significant fraction of the gas in the Universe. Using a model fitting approach, we forecast how well future galaxy and CMB surveys will be able to measure these correlations, and show that powerful constraints on halo pressur…
Recent results of ground-based telescopes, giving high-quality measurements of the CMB temperature power spectrum on small scales motivate the need for an accurate model of foregrounds, which dominate the primary signal at these multipoles. In a previous work, we have shown that cosmological information could be retrieved from the power spectrum of the thermal SZ effect. In this work, we introduce a physically motivated model of the Epoch of Reionisation in the cosmological analysis of CMB data, which is coherent on all scales. In particular, at high multipoles, the power spectrum of the kinet…
We present the measurement of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect in Fourier space, rather than in real space. We measure the density-weighted pairwise kSZ power spectrum, the first use of this promising approach, by cross-correlating a cleaned Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature map, which jointly uses both Planck Release 2 and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe nine-year data, with the two galaxy samples, CMASS and LOWZ, derived fr om the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Data Release 12. With the current data, we constrain the average optical depth $τ$ mul…
We discuss the possibility of studying diffuse baryon distributions with kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect by correlating cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature fluctuations with density fluctuations from 21\,cm intensity mapping (IM). The biggest challenge for the cross-correlation is the loss of large-scale information in IM, due to foregrounds and the zero spacing problem of interferometers. We apply the tidal reconstruction algorithm to restore the lost large-scale modes, which increases the correlation by more than a factor of three. With the predicted foreground level, we …
We describe a tomographic dissection of the Planck CMB lensing data, cross-correlating this map with galaxies in different ranges of photometric redshift. We use the nearly all-sky 2MPZ and WISExSCOS catalogues for z<0.35, extending to z<0.6 using SDSS. We describe checks for consistency between the different datasets, and perform a test for possible leakage of thermal Sunyaev--Zel'dovich signal into our cross-correlation measurements. The amplitude of the cross-correlation allows us to estimate the evolution of density fluctuations as a function of redshift, thus providing a test of theories …
Patchy reionization leaves a number of imprints on the small-scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature fluctuations, the largest of which is the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ), the Doppler shift of CMB photons scattering off moving electrons in ionized bubbles. It has long been known that in the CMB power spectrum, this imprint of reionization is largely degenerate with the kSZ signal produced by late-time galaxies and clusters, thus limiting our ability to constrain reionization. Following Smith & Ferraro (2017), it is possible to isolate the reionization contribution in a model…

We explore a new approach for extracting reionization-era contributions to the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect. Our method utilizes the cross-power spectrum between filtered and squared maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and photometric galaxy surveys during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). This kSZ$^2$-galaxy cross-power spectrum statistic has been successfully detected at lower redshifts ($z \lesssim 1.5$). Here we extend this method to $z \gtrsim 6$ as a potential means to extract signatures of patchy reionization. We model the expected signal across multiple photometric …
Kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich (kSZ) tomography provides a powerful probe of the radial velocity field of matter in the Universe. By cross-correlating a high resolution CMB experiment like CMB S4 and a galaxy survey like DESI or LSST, one can measure the radial velocity field with very high signal to noise over a large volume of the universe. In this paper we show how this measurement can be used to improve constraints on primordial non-Gaussianities of the local type. The velocity field provides a measurement of the unbiased matter perturbations on large scales, which can be cross-correlated with…
The kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect is a secondary CMB temperature anisotropy that provides a powerful probe of the radial-velocity field of matter distributed across the Universe. This velocity field is reconstructed by combining high-resolution CMB measurements with galaxy survey data, and it provides an unbiased tracer of matter perturbations in the linear regime. In this paper, we show how this measurement can be used to probe primordial non-Gaussianity of the local type, particularly focusing on the trispectrum amplitude $τ_{\rm NL}$, as may arise in a simple two-field inflation model t…
General relativity predicts that the rotational momentum flux of matter twists the spacetime via a vector gravitomagnetic (frame-dragging) field, which remains undetected in cosmology. This vector field induces an additional gravitational lensing effect; at the same time, the momentum field sources the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect. The common origin of these two effects allows us to probe the gravitomagnetic signal via their cross-correlations. In this paper, we explore the possibility of detecting the gravitomagnetic field in $Λ$CDM by cross-correlating the weak-lensing convergence…
A consistent, physical, and analytical model for CMB observables of reionisation I. Derivation, constraining power, and detectability of the auto-spectra
As cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons traverse the Universe, anisotropies can be induced via Thomson scattering (proportional to the integrated electron density; optical depth) and inverse Compton scattering (proportional to the integrated electron pressure; thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect). Measurements of anisotropy in optical depth $τ$ and Compton $y$ parameter are imprinted by the galaxies and galaxy clusters and are thus sensitive to the thermodynamic properties of circumgalactic medium and intergalactic medium. We use an analytic halo model to predict the power spectrum of the o…
