Let $G$ be a finite permutation group acting on $Ω$. A base for $G$ is a subset $B \subseteq Ω$ such that the pointwise stabilizer $G_{(B)}$ is the identity. The base size of $G$, denoted by $b(G)$, is the cardinality of the smallest possible base. The minimal degree of $G$, denoted by $μ(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of the support of a non trivial element of $G$. In this paper, we establish a new upper bound for $b(G)$ when $G$ is primitive, and subsequently prove that if $G$ is a primitive group different from the Mathieu group of degree $24$, then $μ(G)b(G)\leq n \log n$, where $n$ is the degree of $G$. This bound is best possible, up to a multiplicative constant.
The covering number of a finite group $G$, denoted $σ(G)$, is the smallest positive integer $k$ such that $G$ is a union of $k$ proper subgroups. We calculate $σ(G)$ for a family of primitive groups $G$ with a unique minimal normal subgroup $N$, isomorphic to $A_n^m$ with $n$ divisible by $6$ and $G/N$ cyclic. This is a generalization of a result of E. Swartz concerning the symmetric groups. We also prove an asymptotic result concerning pairwise generation.
We refer to $d(G)$ as the minimal cardinality of a generating set of a finite group $G$, and say that $G$ is $d$-generated if $d(G)\leq d$. A transitive permutation group $G$ is called $\frac{3}{2}$-transitive if a point stabilizer $G_α$ is nontrivial and its orbits distinct from $\{α\}$ are of the same size. We prove that $d(G)\leq4$ for every primitive $\frac{3}{2}$-transitive permutation group $G$, moreover, $G$ is $2$-generated except for the very particular solvable affine groups that we completely describe. In particular, all finite $2$-transitive and $2$-homogeneous groups are $2$-gener…
The minimal degree of a permutation group $G$ is the minimum number of points not fixed by non-identity elements of $G$. Lower bounds on the minimal degree have strong structural consequences on $G$. Babai conjectured that if a primitive coherent configuration with $n$ vertices is not a Cameron scheme, then its automorphism group has minimal degree $\geq cn$ for some constant $c>0$. In 2014, Babai proved the desired lower bound on the minimal degree of the automorphism groups of strongly regular graphs, thus confirming the conjecture for primitive coherent configurations of rank 3. In this pap…
Let $G$ be a finite primitive permutation group on a set $Ω$ and recall that the fixed point ratio of an element $x \in G$, denoted ${\rm fpr}(x)$, is the proportion of points in $Ω$ fixed by $x$. Fixed point ratios in this setting have been studied for many decades, finding a wide range of applications. In this paper, we are interested in comparing ${\rm fpr}(x)$ with the order of $x$. Our main theorem classifies the triples $(G,Ω,x)$ as above with the property that $x$ has prime order $r$ and ${\rm fpr}(x) > 1/(r+1)$. There are several applications. Firstly, we extend earlier work of Guralni…
We show that the minimal base size $b(G)$ of a finite primitive permutation group $G$ of degree $n$ is at most $2 (\log |G|/\log n) + 24$. This bound is asymptotically best possible since there exists a sequence of primitive permutation groups $G$ of degrees $n$ such that $b(G) = \lfloor 2 (\log |G|/\log n) \rceil - 2$ and $b(G)$ is unbounded. As a corollary we show that a primitive permutation group of degree $n$ that does not contain the alternating group $\mathrm{Alt}(n)$ has a base of size at most $\max\{\sqrt{n} , \ 25\}$.
Let G be a group and S a subset of G that generates G. For each x in G define the length l_S(x) of x relative to S to be the minimal k such that x is a product of k elements of S. The supremum of the values l_S(x), x \in G, is called the width of G with respect to S. Here we focus on a free group F. The width of F relative to the set of all primitive (respectively palindromic) elements is called the primitive (respectively palindromic) width of F. We prove that for a free group F_n of finite rank n, both widths are infinite. A result of independent interest is that every primitive element of F…
In this paper we show that if $G$ is a primitive subgroup of $S_{n}$ that is not large base, then any irredundant base for $G$ has size at most $5 \log n$. This is the first logarithmic bound on the size of an irredundant base for such groups, and is best possible up to a small constant. As a corollary, the relational complexity of $G$ is at most $5 \log n+1$, and the maximal size of a minimal base and the height are both at most $5 \log n.$ Furthermore, we deduce that a base for $G$ of size at most $5 \log n$ can be computed in polynomial time.
Let $G \leqslant {\rm Sym}(Ω)$ be a finite permutation group and recall that the base size of $G$ is the minimal size of a subset of $Ω$ with trivial pointwise stabiliser. There is an extensive literature on base sizes for primitive groups, but there are very few results for primitive groups of product type. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of bases in this setting. Our first main result determines the base size of every product type primitive group of the form $L \wr P \leqslant {\rm Sym}(Ω)$ with soluble point stabilisers, where $Ω= Γ^k$, $L \leqslant {\rm Sym}(Γ)$ and $P \leqsl…
Let G be a permutation group, acting on a set Ωof size n. A subset B of Ωis a base for G if the pointwise stabilizer G_(B) is trivial. Let b(G) be the minimal size of a base for G. A subgroup G of Sym(n) is large base if there exist integers m and r \geq 1 such that Alt(m)^r \unlhd G \leq Sym(m) \wr Sym(r), where the action of Sym(m) is on k-element subsets of {1,...,m} and the wreath product acts with product action. In this paper we prove that if G is primitive and not large base, then either G is the Mathieu group M24 in its natural action on 24 points, or b(G) \leq \lceil \log n\rceil+1. F…
A base B for a finite permutation group G acting on a set X is a subset of X with the property that only the identity of G can fix every point of B. We prove that a primitive diagonal group G has a base of size 2 unless the top group of G is the alternating or symmetric group acting naturally, in which case a tight bound for the minimal base size of G is given. This bound also satisfies a well-known conjecture of Pyber. Moreover, we prove that if the top group of G does not contain the alternating group, then the proportion of pairs of points that are bases for G tends to 1 as |G| tends to inf…
Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group on a finite set $Ω$ and recall that a base for $G$ is a subset of $Ω$ with trivial pointwise stabiliser. The base size of $G$, denoted $b(G)$, is the minimal size of a base. If $b(G)=2$ then we can study the Saxl graph $Σ(G)$ of $G$, which has vertex set $Ω$ and two vertices are adjacent if they form a base. This is a vertex-transitive graph, which is conjectured to be connected with diameter at most $2$ when $G$ is primitive. In this paper, we combine probabilistic and computational methods to prove a strong form of this conjecture for all almost simp…
An axial algebra over the field $\mathbb F$ is a commutative algebra generated by idempotents whose adjoint action has multiplicity-free minimal polynomial. For semisimple associative algebras this leads to sums of copies of $\mathbb F$. Here we consider the first nonassociative case, where adjoint minimal polynomials divide $(x-1)x(x-η)$ for fixed $0\neqη\neq 1$. Jordan algebras arise when $η=\frac{1}{2}$, but our motivating examples are certain Griess algebras of vertex operator algebras and the related Majorana algebras. We study a class of algebras, including these, for which axial automor…
Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $Ω$. A base for $G$ is a subset of $Ω$ whose pointwise stabiliser is trivial, and the base size of $G$ is the minimal cardinality of a base. If $G$ has base size $2$, then the corresponding Saxl graph $Σ(G)$ has vertex set $Ω$ and two vertices are adjacent if they form a base for $G$. A recent conjecture of Burness and Giudici states that if $G$ is a finite primitive permutation group with base size $2$, then $Σ(G)$ has the property that every two vertices have a common neighbour. We investigate this conjecture when $G$ is an affine group and a point sta…
Let $G$ be a group of collineations of a finite thick generalised quadrangle $Γ$. Suppose that $G$ acts primitively on the point set $\mathcal{P}$ of $Γ$, and transitively on the lines of $Γ$. We show that the primitive action of $G$ on $\mathcal{P}$ cannot be of holomorph simple or holomorph compound type. In joint work with Glasby, we have previously classified the examples $Γ$ for which the action of $G$ on $\mathcal{P}$ is of affine type. The problem of classifying generalised quadrangles with a point-primitive, line-transitive collineation group is therefore reduced to the case where ther…
Let $G$ be a finite primitive permutation group on a set $Ω$ with point stabiliser $H$. Recall that a subset of $Ω$ is a base for $G$ if its pointwise stabiliser is trivial. We define the base size of $G$, denoted $b(G,H)$, to be the minimal size of a base for $G$. Determining the base size of a group is a fundamental problem in permutation group theory, with a long history stretching back to the 19th century. Here one of our main motivations is a theorem of Seress from 1996, which states that $b(G,H) \leqslant 4$ if $G$ is soluble. In this paper we extend Seress' result by proving that $b(G,H…
Let $G$ be a collineation group of a thick finite generalised hexagon or generalised octagon $Γ$. If $G$ acts primitively on the points of $Γ$, then a recent result of Bamberg et al. shows that $G$ must be an almost simple group of Lie type. We show that, furthermore, the minimal normal subgroup $S$ of $G$ cannot be a Suzuki group or a Ree group of type $^2\text{G}_2$, and that if $S$ is a Ree group of type $^2\text{F}_4$, then $Γ$ is (up to point--line duality) the classical Ree--Tits generalised octagon.
Let $G$ be a finite group and recall that the Frattini subgroup ${\rm Frat}(G)$ is the intersection of all the maximal subgroups of $G$. In this paper, we investigate the intersection number of $G$, denoted $α(G)$, which is the minimal number of maximal subgroups whose intersection coincides with ${\rm Frat}(G)$. In earlier work, we studied $α(G)$ in the special case where $G$ is simple and here we extend the analysis to almost simple groups. In particular, we prove that $α(G) \leqslant 4$ for every almost simple group $G$, which is best possible. We also establish new results on the intersect…
We define a cipher that is an extension of GOST, and study the permutation group generated by its round functions. We show that, under minimal assumptions on the components of the cipher, this group is the alternating group on the plaintext space. This we do by first showing that the group is primitive, and then applying the O'Nan-Scott classification of primitive groups.
We give a complete characterization of countable primitive groups in several settings including linear groups, subgroups of mapping class groups, groups acting minimally on trees and convergence groups. The latter category includes as a special case Kleinian groups as well as subgroups of word hyperbolic groups. As an application we calculate the Frattini subgroup in many of these settings, often generalizing results that were only known for finitely generated groups. In particular, we answer a question of G. Higman and B.H. Neumann on the Frattini group of an amalgamated product.
Let $G \leqslant {\rm Sym}(Ω)$ be a finite almost simple primitive permutation group, with socle $G_0$ and point stabilizer $H$. A subset of $Ω$ is a base for $G$ if its pointwise stabilizer is trivial; the base size of $G$, denoted $b(G)$, is the minimal size of a base. We say that $G$ is standard if $G_0 = A_n$ and $Ω$ is an orbit of subsets or partitions of $\{1, \ldots, n\}$, or if $G_0$ is a classical group and $Ω$ is an orbit of subspaces (or pairs of subspaces) of the natural module for $G_0$. The base size of a standard group can be arbitrarily large, in general, whereas the situation …
A \emph{finite cover} of a group $G$ is a finite collection $\mathcal{C}$ of proper subgroups of $G$ with the property that $\bigcup \mathcal{C} = G$. A finite group admits a finite cover if and only if it is noncyclic. More generally, it is known that a group admits a finite cover if and only if it has a finite, noncyclic homomorphic image. If $\mathcal{C}$ is a finite cover of a group $G$, and no cover of $G$ with fewer subgroups exists, then $\mathcal{C}$ is said to be a \emph{minimal cover} of $G$, and the cardinality of $\mathcal{C}$ is called the \emph{covering number} of $G$, denoted by…
We study the base sizes of finite quasiprimitive permutation groups of twisted wreath type, which are precisely the finite permutation groups with a unique minimal normal subgroup that is also non-abelian, non-simple and regular. Every permutation group of twisted wreath type is permutation isomorphic to a twisted wreath product $G=T^k{:}P$ acting on its base group $Ω=T^k$, where $T$ is some non-abelian simple group and $P$ is some group acting transitively on $\boldsymbol{k}=\{1,\ldots,k\}$ with $k\geq 2$. We prove that if $G$ is primitive on $Ω$ and $P$ is quasiprimitive on $\boldsymbol{k}$,…
A minimal deterministic finite automaton (DFA) is uniformly minimal if it always remains minimal when the final state set is replaced by a non-empty proper subset of the state set. We prove that a permutation DFA is uniformly minimal if and only if its transition monoid is a primitive group. We use this to study boolean operations on group languages, which are recognized by direct products of permutation DFAs. A direct product cannot be uniformly minimal, except in the trivial case where one of the DFAs in the product is a one-state DFA. However, non-trivial direct products can satisfy a weake…
The present paper records more details of the relationship between primitive elements and palindromes in F_2, the free group of rank two. We characterise the conjugacy classes of primitive elements which contain palindromes as those which contain cyclically reduced words of odd length. We identify large palindromic subwords of certain primitives in conjugacy classes which contain cyclically reduced words of even length. We show that under obvious conditions on exponent sums, pairs of palindromic primitives form palindromic bases for F_2. Further, we note that each cyclically reduced primitive …
Algorithms to construct minimal left group codes are provided. These are based on results describing a complete set of orthogonal primitive idempotents in each Wedderburn component of a semisimple finite group algebra FG for a large class of groups G. As an illustration of our methods, alternative constructions to some best linear codes over F_2 and F_3 are given.
An irredundant base $B$ for a permutation group $G\leq \mathrm{Sym}(Ω)$ is an ordered subset of $Ω$ with trivial stabiliser such that no base point is fixed by the stabiliser of its predecessors. Groups whose irredundant bases all have the same size are termed Irredundant Bases of Invariant Size (IBIS) groups, and were introduced by Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass. In this paper, we contribute to the classification of primitive IBIS groups by classifying those that are almost simple with sporadic socle.
