Primitive almost simple IBIS groups with sporadic socle

An irredundant base $B$ for a permutation group $G\leq \mathrm{Sym}(Ω)$ is an ordered subset of $Ω$ with trivial stabiliser such that no base point is fixed by the stabiliser of its predecessors. Groups whose irredundant bases all have the same size are termed Irredundant Bases of Invariant Size (IBIS) groups, and were introduced by Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass. In this paper, we contribute to the classification of primitive IBIS groups by classifying those that are almost simple with sporadic socle.

Primitive finite nilpotent linear groups over number fields

Building upon the author's previous work on primitivity testing of finite nilpotent linear groups over fields of characteristic zero, we describe precisely those finite nilpotent groups which arise as primitive linear groups over a given number field. Our description is based on arithmetic conditions involving invariants of the field.

On relational complexity and base size of finite primitive groups

In this paper we show that if $G$ is a primitive subgroup of $S_{n}$ that is not large base, then any irredundant base for $G$ has size at most $5 \log n$. This is the first logarithmic bound on the size of an irredundant base for such groups, and is best possible up to a small constant. As a corollary, the relational complexity of $G$ is at most $5 \log n+1$, and the maximal size of a minimal base and the height are both at most $5 \log n.$ Furthermore, we deduce that a base for $G$ of size at most $5 \log n$ can be computed in polynomial time.

Let $G$ be a finite primitive permutation group on a set $Ω$ with nontrivial point stabilizer $G_α$. We say that $G$ is extremely primitive if $G_α$ acts primitively on each of its orbits in $Ω\setminus \{α\}$. Let $G$ be a finite primitive permutation group on a set $Ω$ with point stabiliser $H$. Recall that a subset of $Ω$ is a base for $G$ if its pointwise stabiliser is trivial. We define the base size of $G$, denoted $b(G,H)$, to be the minimal size of a base for $G$. A base B for a finite permutation group G acting on a set X is a subset of X with the property that only the identity of G can fix every point of B. We prove that a primitive diagonal group G has a base of size 2 unless the top group of G is the alternating or symmetric group acting naturally, in which case a tight bound for the minimal base size of G is given. Let $G$ be a transitive permutation group on a finite set $Ω$ and recall that a base for $G$ is a subset of $Ω$ with trivial pointwise stabiliser. The base size of $G$, denoted $b(G)$, is the minimal size of a base. If $b(G)=2$ then we can study the Saxl graph $Σ(G)$ of $G$, which has vertex set $Ω$ and two vertices are adjacent if they form a base.
