We study symmetric bimatrix games that also have the common-payoff property, i.e., the two players receive the same payoff at any outcome of the game. Due to the symmetry property, these games are guaranteed to have symmetric Nash equilibria, where the two players play the same (mixed) strategy. While the problem of computing such symmetric equilibria in general symmetric bimatrix games is known to be intractable, namely PPAD-complete, this result does not extend to our setting. Indeed, due to the common-payoff property, the problem lies in the lower class CLS, ruling out PPAD-hardness. In this paper, we show that the problem remains intractable, namely it is CLS-complete. On the way to proving this result, as our main technical contribution, we show that computing a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point of a quadratic program remains CLS-hard, even when the feasible domain is a simplex.
We study the complexity of computing a uniform Nash equilibrium on a non-win-lose bimatrix game. It is known that such a problem is NP-complete even if a bimatrix game is win-lose (Bonifaci et al., 2008). Fortunately, if a win-lose bimatrix game is planar, then uniform Nash equilibria always exist. We have a polynomial-time algorithm for finding a uniform Nash equilibrium of a planar win-lose bimatrix game (Addario-Berry et al., 2007). The following question is left: How hard to compute a uniform Nash equilibrium on a planar non-win-lose bimatrix game? This paper resolves this issue. We prove …
We revisit the complexity of deciding, given a {\it bimatrix game,} whether it has a {\it Nash equilibrium} with certain natural properties; such decision problems were early known to be ${\mathcal{NP}}$-hard~\cite{GZ89}. We show that ${\mathcal{NP}}$-hardness still holds under two significant restrictions in simultaneity: the game is {\it win-lose} (that is, all {\it utilities} are $0$ or $1$) and {\it symmetric}. To address the former restriction, we design win-lose {\it gadgets} and a win-lose reduction; to accomodate the latter restriction, we employ and analyze the classical {\it ${\maths…
This paper identifies a manifold in the space of bimatrix games which contains games that are strategically equivalent to rank-1 games through a positive affine transformation. It also presents an algorithm that can compute, in polynomial time, one such rank-1 game which is strategically equivalent to the original game. Through this approach, we substantially expand the class of games that are solvable in polynomial time. It is hoped that this approach can be further developed in conjunction with other notions of strategic equivalence to compute exact or approximate Nash equilibria in a wide v…
The rank of a bimatrix game is defined as the rank of the sum of the payoff matrices of the two players. The rank of a game is known to impact both the most suitable computation methods for determining a solution and the expressive power of the game. Under certain conditions on the payoff matrices, we devise a method that reduces the rank of the game without changing the equilibrium of the game. We leverage matrix pencil theory and the Wedderburn rank reduction formula to arrive at our results. We also present a constructive proof of the fact that in a generic square game, the rank of the game…
In this paper, we first devise two algorithms to determine whether or not a bimatrix game has a strategically equivalent zero-sum game. If so, we propose an algorithm that computes the strategically equivalent zero-sum game. If a given bimatrix game is not strategically equivalent to a zero-sum game, we then propose an approach to compute a zero-sum game whose saddle-point equilibrium can be mapped to a well-supported approximate Nash equilibrium of the original game. We conduct extensive numerical simulation to establish the efficacy of the two algorithms.
Given a bimatrix game, the associated leadership or commitment games are defined as the games at which one player, the leader, commits to a (possibly mixed) strategy and the other player, the follower, chooses his strategy after having observed the irrevocable commitment of the leader. Based on a result by von Stengel and Zamir [2010], the notions of commitment value and commitment optimal strategies for each player are discussed as a possible solution concept. It is shown that in non-degenerate bimatrix games (a) pure commitment optimal strategies together with the follower's best response co…

Although the definition of what empathetic preferences exactly are is still evolving, there is a general consensus in the psychology, science and engineering communities that the evolution toward players' behaviors in interactive decision-making problems will be accompanied by the exploitation of their empathy, sympathy, compassion, antipathy, spitefulness, selfishness, altruism, and self-abnegating states in the payoffs. In this article, we study one-shot bimatrix games from a psychological game theory viewpoint. A new empathetic payoff model is calculated to fit empirical observations and bo…
We show that, for any sufficiently small fixed $ε> 0$, when both players in a general-sum two-player (bimatrix) game employ optimistic mirror descent (OMD) with smooth regularization, learning rate $η= O(ε^2)$ and $T = Ω(\text{poly}(1/ε))$ repetitions, either the dynamics reach an $ε$-approximate Nash equilibrium (NE), or the average correlated distribution of play is an $Ω(\text{poly}(ε))$-strong coarse correlated equilibrium (CCE): any possible unilateral deviation does not only leave the player worse, but will decrease its utility by $Ω(\text{poly}(ε))$. As an immediate consequence, when th…
已知在$2$ -玩家非零和博弈中确定纳什均衡是PPAD困难的(Chen and Deng(2006),Chen,Deng and Teng(2009))。
Rank-1 Bi-matrix Games: A Homeomorphism and a Polynomial Time Algorithm
这解决了Kannan and Theobald(SODA 2007)和Theobald(2007)提出的一个悬而未决的问题。
Since the celebrated PPAD-completeness result for Nash equilibria in bimatrix games, a long line of research has focused on polynomial-time algorithms that compute $\varepsilon$-approximate Nash equilibria. Finding the best possible approximation guarantee that we can have in polynomial time has been a fundamental and non-trivial pursuit on settling the complexity of approximate equilibria. Despite a significant amount of effort, the algorithm of Tsaknakis and Spirakis, with an approximation guarantee of $(0.3393+δ)$, remains the state of the art over the last 15 years. In this paper, we propo…
This paper is an exposition of algorithms for finding one or all equilibria of a bimatrix game (a two-player game in strategic form) in the style of a chapter in a graduate textbook. Using labeled "best-response polytopes", we present the Lemke-Howson algorithm that finds one equilibrium. We show that the path followed by this algorithm has a direction, and that the endpoints of the path have opposite index, in a canonical way using determinants. For reference, we prove that a number of notions of nondegeneracy of a bimatrix game are equivalent. The computation of all equilibria of a general b…
Since the seminal PPAD-completeness result for computing a Nash equilibrium even in two-player games, an important line of research has focused on relaxations achievable in polynomial time. In this paper, we consider the notion of $\varepsilon$-well-supported Nash equilibrium, where $\varepsilon \in [0,1]$ corresponds to the approximation guarantee. Put simply, in an $\varepsilon$-well-supported equilibrium, every player chooses with positive probability actions that are within $\varepsilon$ of the maximum achievable payoff, against the other player's strategy. Ever since the initial approxima…
In this paper, we study the dynamic behavior of Hedge, a well-known algorithm in theoretical machine learning and algorithmic game theory. The empirical average (arithmetic mean) of the iterates Hedge generates is known to converge to a minimax equilibrium in zero-sum games. We generalize that result to show convergence of the empirical average to Nash equilibrium in symmetric bimatrix games (that is bimatrix games where the payoff matrix of each player is the transpose of that of the other) in the sense that every limit point of the sequence of averages is an $ε$-approximate symmetric equilib…
McLennan and Tourky (2010) showed that "imitation games" provide a new view of the computation of Nash equilibria of bimatrix games with the Lemke-Howson algorithm. In an imitation game, the payoff matrix of one of the players is the identity matrix. We study the more general "unit vector games", which are already known, where the payoff matrix of one player is composed of unit vectors. Our main application is a simplification of the construction by Savani and von Stengel (2006) of bimatrix games where two basic equilibrium-finding algorithms take exponentially many steps: the Lemke-Howson alg…

We explore the power of semidefinite programming (SDP) for finding additive $epsilon$-approximate Nash equilibria in bimatrix games. We introduce an SDP relaxation for a quadratic programming formulation of the Nash equilibrium (NE) problem and provide a number of valid inequalities to improve the quality of the relaxation. If a rank-1 solution to this SDP is found, then an exact NE can be recovered. We show that for a strictly competitive game, our SDP is guaranteed to return a rank-1 solution. We propose two algorithms based on iterative linearization of smooth nonconvex objective functions …
In this work we offer an $O(|V|^2 |E|\, W)$ pseudo-polynomial time deterministic algorithm for solving the Value Problem and Optimal Strategy Synthesis in Mean Payoff Games. This improves by a factor $\log(|V|\, W)$ the best previously known pseudo-polynomial time upper bound due to Brim,~\etal The improvement hinges on a suitable characterization of values, and a description of optimal positional strategies, in terms of reweighted Energy Games and Small Energy-Progress Measures.
We establish that the subgame perfect equilibrium (SPE) threshold problem for mean-payoff games is NP-complete. While the SPE threshold problem was recently shown to be decidable (in doubly exponential time) and NP-hard, its exact worst case complexity was left open.
