We explicitly determine all shear-free null hypersurfaces embedded in an Einstein spacetime, including vacuum asymptotically flat spacetimes. We characterize these hypersurfaces as oriented 3-dimensional manifolds where each is equipped with a coframe basis, a structure group and a connection. Such manifolds are known as null hypersurface structures (NHSs). The coframe and connection one-forms for an NHS appear as solutions to the projection of the Cartan structure equations onto the null hypersurface. We then show that each NHS corresponds to a Carrollian structure equipped with a unique pair of Ehresmann connection and affine connection.
In this paper, three things are done. First, we study from an algebraic point of view the infinite-dimensional BMS-like extensions of the Carroll algebra relevant to the asymptotic structure of the electric and magnetic Carrollian limits of Einstein gravity. In the course of this study we exhibit by "Carroll-Galileo duality" a new infinite-dimensional BMS-like extension of the Galilean algebra and of its centrally extended Bargmann algebra. Second, we consider the electric Carrollian limit of the pure Einstein theory and indicate that more flexible boundary conditions than the ones that follow…
We show that a holographic description of four-dimensional asymptotically locally flat spacetimes is reached smoothly from the zero-cosmological-constant limit of anti-de Sitter holography. To this end, we use the derivative expansion of fluid/gravity correspondence. From the boundary perspective, the vanishing of the bulk cosmological constant appears as the zero velocity of light limit. This sets how Carrollian geometry emerges in flat holography. The new boundary data are a two-dimensional spatial surface, identified with the null infinity of the bulk Ricci-flat spacetime, accompanied with …
We investigate the (conformally coupled) scalar field on a general Carrollian spacetime in arbitrary dimension. The analysis discloses electric and magnetic dynamics. For both, we provide the energy and the momenta of the field, accompanied by their conservation equations. We discuss the conservation and non-conservation properties resulting from the existence of conformal isometries and the associated charges. We illustrate those results for a scalar field propagating on the null boundary of four-dimensional Ricci-flat Robinson--Trautman spacetimes.
We derive the non-relativistic $c\to\infty$ and ultra-relativistic $c\to 0$ limits of the $κ$-deformed symmetries and corresponding spacetime in (3+1) dimensions, with and without a cosmological constant. We apply the theory of Lie bialgebra contractions to the Poisson version of the $κ$-(A)dS quantum algebra, and quantize the resulting contracted Poisson-Hopf algebras, thus giving rise to the $κ$-deformation of the Newtonian (Newton-Hooke and Galilei) and Carrollian (Para-Poincaré, Para-Euclidean and Carroll) quantum symmetries, including their deformed quadratic Casimir operators. The corres…
We study the concept of Carrollian spacetime starting from its underlying fiber-bundle structure. The latter admits an Ehresmann connection, which enables a natural separation of time and space, preserved by the subset of Carrollian diffeomorphisms. These allow for the definition of Carrollian tensors and the structure at hand provides the designated tools for describing the geometry of null hypersurfaces embedded in Lorentzian manifolds. Using these tools, we investigate the conformal isometries of general Carrollian spacetimes and their relationship with the BMS group.
The noncommutative spacetimes associated to the $κ$-Poincaré relativistic symmetries and their "non-relativistic" (Galilei) and "ultra-relativistic" (Carroll) limits are indistinguishable, since their coordinates satisfy the same algebra. In this work, we show that the three quantum kinematical models can be differentiated when looking at the associated spaces of time-like worldlines. Specifically, we construct the noncommutative spaces of time-like geodesics with $κ$-Galilei and $κ$-Carroll symmetries as contractions of the corresponding $κ$-Poincaré space and we show that these three spaces …
The aim of this series of papers is to generalise the ambient approach of Duval et al. regarding the embedding of Galilean and Carrollian geometries inside gravitational waves with parallel rays. In this first part, we propose a generalisation of the embedding of torsionfree Galilean and Carrollian manifolds inside larger classes of gravitational waves. On the Galilean side, the quotient procedure of Duval et al. is extended to gravitational waves endowed with a lightlike hypersurface-orthogonal Killing vector field. This extension is shown to provide the natural geometric framework underlying…

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in five-dimensional spacetime provides an excellent example of a theory that, while including higher-order curvature corrections to General Relativity, still shares many of its features, such as second-order field equations for the metric. We focus on the largely unexplored case where the coupling constants of the theory are such that no constant-curvature solution is allowed, leaving open the question of what the vacuum state should then be. We find that even a slight deviation from the anti-de Sitter Chern-Simons theory, where the vacuum state is five-dimensiona…
In this work we prove that the maximally symmetric vacuum solutions of General Relativity emerge from the geometric structure of statistical mechanics and thermodynamic fluctuation theory. To present our argument, we begin by showing that the pseudo-Riemannian structure of the Thermodynamic Phase Space is a solution to the vacuum Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity with a cosmological constant. Then, we use the geometry of equilibrium thermodynamics to demonstrate that the maximally symmetric vacuum solutions of Einstein's Field Equations -- Minkowski, de-Sitter and Anti-de-Sitter spacetim…

Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG), nonperturbatively renormalized by means of a certain asymptotically safe renormalization group (RG) trajectory, is explored by solving its scale dependent effective field equations and embedding the family of emerging 4-dimensional spacetimes into a single 5-dimensional manifold, which thus encodes the complete information about all scales. By construction the latter manifold is furnished with a natural foliation. Heuristically, its leaves are interpreted as physical spacetime observed on different scales of the experimental resolution. Generalizing earlier work…
A vector model with a hybrid form of spacetime symmetry breaking consisting of explicit diffeomorphism breaking but spontaneous local Lorentz violation is presented. The combined effects of these symmetry breakings give rise to a theory obeying the Einstein-Maxwell equations in a preferred spatially homogeneous and isotropic frame, with photons emerging as massless Nambu-Goldstone modes. Interpretations and possible generalizations of this model are discussed, and comparisons are made to previous models describing photons as Nambu-Goldstone modes.
The effects on Raychaudhuri's equation of an intrinsically-discrete or particle nature of spacetime are investigated. This is done through the consideration of null congruences emerging from, or converging to, a generic point of spacetime, i.e. in geometric circumstances somehow prototypical of singularity issues. We do this from an effective point of view, that is through a (continuous) description of spacetime modified to embody the existence of an intrinsic discreteness on the small scale, this adding to previous results for non-null congruences. Various expressions for the effective rate o…
