In this article, we study the 2D incompressible steady Navier-Stokes equation in a channel $(-L,0)\times(-1,1)$ with the no-slip boundary condition on $\{Y = \pm 1\}$, and consider the inviscid limit $\varepsilon \to 0$. In the special case of Euler shear flow $(u_e(Y),0)$, we construct a steady Navier-Stokes solution for $\varepsilon \ll1$, $$\left\{ \begin{aligned} &u^\varepsilon \sim u_e + u_p + O(\sqrt{\varepsilon}),\\ &v^\varepsilon \sim h(Y) \exp\{Xu_e(Y)/\varepsilon\} + O(\sqrt{\varepsilon}), \end{aligned}\right. $$ where $u_p$ represents the classical Prandtl layer profile, and $h(Y)$ is an arbitrary smooth, compactly-supported function with small magnitude. While the classical Prandtl boundary layer $u_p$ exhibits a small scale of order $\sqrt{\varepsilon}$ in $Y$ near $Y = \pm 1$, the profile we construct reveals an $\varepsilon$ small scale of $Xu_e(Y)$ in the vertical velocity component.
We consider solutions of the 2-d compressible Euler equations that are steady and self-similar. They arise naturally at interaction points in genuinely multi-dimensional flow. We characterize the possible solutions in the class of flows L^\infty-close to a constant supersonic background. As a special case we prove that solutions of 1-d Riemann problems are unique in the class of small L^\infty functions. We also show that solutions of the backward-in-time Riemann problem are necessarily BV.
We study singular limit for scaled barotropic Euler system modelling a rotating, compressible and inviscid fluid, where Mach and Rossby numbers are proportional to a small parameter $ε$. If the fluid is confined to an infinite slab, the limit behaviour is identified as a horizontal motion of an incompressible inviscid system that is analogous to the Euler system. We consider a very general class of solutions, named dissipative solution for the scaled compressible Euler systems and will show that it converges to a strong solution of that incompressible inviscid system.
In this paper we study the incompressible inviscid limit for a compressible micro-polar model. We prove that the weak solution of the compressible micro-polar system converges to the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations (Euler equations) in the limit of small Mach number (and vanishing viscosity).
We consider the motion of an inviscid compressible fluid under the mutual interactions with magnetic field. We show that the initial value problem is ill--posed in the class of weak solutions for a large class of physically admissible data. We also consider the same problem for inviscid heat--conductive fluid and show the same result under certain restrictions imposed on the magnetic field. The main tool is the method of convex integration adapted to the Euler system with `variable coefficients'.
We consider an abstract functional-differential equation derived from the pressure-less Euler system with variable coefficients that includes several systems of partial differential equations arising in the fluid mechanics. Using the method of convex integration we show the existence of infinitely many weak solutions for prescribed initial data and kinetic energy.
We consider the Keller-Segel system of consumption type coupled with an incompressible fluid equation. The system describes the dynamics of oxygen and bacteria densities evolving within a fluid. We establish local well-posedness of the system in Sobolev spaces for partially inviscid and fully inviscid cases. In the latter, additional assumptions on the initial data are required when either the oxygen or bacteria density touches zero. Even though the oxygen density satisfies a maximum principle due to consumption, we prove finite time blow-up of its $C^{2}$--norm with certain initial data.
In this paper, we investigate the singularity near the degenerate points of the steady axisymmetric flow with general vorticity of an inviscid incompressible fluid acted on by gravity and with a free surface. We called the points on the free boundary at which the gradient of the stream function vanishes as the degenerate points. The main results in this paper give the different classifications of the singularity near the degenerate points on the free surface. More precisely, we obtained that at the stagnation points, the possible profiles must be a Stokes corner, or a horizontal cusp, or a hor…
We discuss several approaches to generalized solutions of problems describing the motion of inviscid fluids. We propose a new concept of dissipative solution to the compressible Euler system based on a careful analysis of possible oscillations and/or concentrations in the associated generating sequence. Unlike the conventional measure-valued solutions or rather their expected values, the dissipative solutions comply with a natural compatibility condition - they are classical solutions as long as they enjoy certain degree of smoothness.
We consider a coupled system of partial and ordinary differential equations describing the interaction between an isentropic inviscid fluid and a rigid body moving freely inside the fluid. We prove the existence of measure-valued solutions which is generated by the vanishing viscosity limit of incompressible fluid-rigid body interaction system under some physically constitutive relations. Moreover, we show that the measure-value solution coincides with strong solution on the interval of its existence. This relies on the weak-strong uniqueness analysis.
In a recent paper, the authors investigated the controllability of an underwater vehicle immersed in an infinite volume of an inviscid fluid, assuming that the flow was irrotational. The aim of the present paper is to pursue this study by considering the more general case of a flow with vorticity. It is shown here that the local controllability of the position and the velocity of the underwater vehicle (a vector in R 12) holds in a flow with vorticity whenever it holds in a flow without vorticity.
We prove the existence of steady \emph{space quasi-periodic} stream functions, solutions for the Euler equation in vorticity-stream function formulation in the two dimensional channel ${\mathbb R}\times [-1,1]$. These solutions bifurcate from a prescribed shear equilibrium near the Couette flow, whose profile induces finitely many modes of oscillations in the horizontal direction for the linearized problem. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme, near such equilibrium we construct small amplitude, space reversible stream functions slightly deforming the linear solutions and reta…
In three space dimensions, we consider the compressible inviscid model describing the time evolution of two fluids sharing the same velocity and enjoying the algebraic pressure closure. By employing the technique of convex integration, we prove the existence of infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions for any smooth initial data. We also show that for any piecewise constant initial densities, there exists suitable initial velocity such that the problem admits infinitely many global-in-time weak solutions that conserve the total energy. The structure of the two-fluid model is crucial in ou…
In this paper, we investigate the controllability of an underwater vehicle immersed in an infinite volume of an inviscid fluid whose flow is assumed to be irrotational. Taking as control input the flow of the fluid through a part of the boundary of the rigid body, we obtain a finite-dimensional system similar to Kirchhoff laws in which the control input appears through both linear terms (with time derivative) and bilinear terms. Applying Coron's return method, we establish some local controllability results for the position and velocities of the underwater vehicle. Examples with six, four, or …
We consider a system describing the motion of an isentropic, inviscid, weakly com-pressible, fast rotating fluid in the whole space R^3 , with initial data belonging to H^s(R^3) , s \textgreater{} 5/2. We prove that the system admits a unique local strong solution in L^$\infty$([0, T ]; H^s(R^3)) , where T is independent of the Rossby and Mach numbers. Moreover, using Strichartz-type estimates, we prove that the solution is almost global, i.e. its lifespan is of the order of $ε$^(--$α$) , $α$ \textgreater{} 0, without any smallness assumption on the initial data (the initial data can even go t…
In this paper, we consider the existence of global weak solutions to a one dimensional fluid-particles interaction model: inviscid Burgers-Vlasov equations with fluid velocity in $L^\infty$ and particles' probability density in $L^1$. Our weak solution is also an entropy solution to inviscid Burgers' equation. The approach is adding ingeniously artificial viscosity to construct approximate solutions satisfying $L^\infty$ compensated compactness framework and weak $L^1$ compactness framework. It is worthy to be pointed out that the bounds of fluid velocity and the kinetic energy of particles' p…
We discuss general incompressible inviscid models, including the Euler equations, the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, incompressible porous medium equation, and Boussinesq equations. All these models have classical unique solutions, at least for short time. We show that they have real analytic Lagrangian paths. More precisely, we show that as long as a solution of any of these equations is in a class of regularity that assures Hölder continuous gradients of velocity, the corresponding Lagrangian paths are real analytic functions of time. The method of proof is conceptually straightforward …
We show that solutions to a large class of inviscid equations, in Eulerian variables, extend as holomorphic functions of time, with values in a Gevrey class (thus space-analytic), and are solutions of complexified versions of the said equations. The class of equations we consider includes those of fluid dynamics such as the Euler, surface quasi-geostrophic, Boussinesq and magnetohydrodynamic equations, as well as other equations with analytic nonlinearities. The initial data are assumed to belong to a $\mathit{Gevrey\:class}$, i.e., analytic in the space variable. Our technique follows that of…
We obtain a result about propagation of geometric properties for solutions of the non-homogeneous incompressible Euler system in any dimension $N\geq2$. In particular, we investigate conservation of striated and conormal regularity, which is a natural way of generalizing the 2-D structure of vortex patches. The results we get are only local in time, even in the dimension N=2; however, we provide an explicit lower bound for the lifespan of the solution. In the case of physical dimension N=2 or 3, we investigate also propagation of Hölder regularity in the interior of a bounded domain.
We consider $L^2$ minimizing geodesics along the group of volume preserving maps $SDiff(D)$ of a given 3-dimensional domain $D$. The corresponding curves describe the motion of an ideal incompressible fluid inside $D$ and are (formally) solutions of the Euler equations. It is known that there is a unique possible pressure gradient for these curves whenever their end points are fixed. In addition, this pressure field has a limited but unconditional (internal) regularity. The present paper completes these results by showing: 1) the uniqueness property can be viewed as an infinite dimensional phe…
We obtain the local existence and uniqueness for a system describing interaction of an incompressible inviscid fluid, modeled by the Euler equations, and an elastic plate, represented by the fourth-order hyperbolic PDE. We provide a~priori estimates for the existence with the optimal regularity $H^{r}$, for $r>2.5$, on the fluid initial data and construct a unique solution of the system for initial data $u_0\in H^{r}$ for $r\geq3$. An important feature of the existence theorem is that the Taylor-Rayleigh instability does not occur.

We study a generalization of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier system for an incompressible fluid where the deviatoric part of the Cauchy stress tensor is related to the symmetric part of the velocity gradient via a maximal monotone 2-graph that is continuously parametrized by the temperature. As such, the considered fluid may go through transitions between three of the following regimes: it can flow as a Bingham fluid for a specific value of the temperature, while it can behave as the Navier-Stokes fluid for another value of the temperature or, for yet another temperature, it can respond as the Euler…
The issue of the inviscid limit for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations when a no-slip condition is prescribed on the boundary is a famous open problem. A result by Tosio Kato says that convergence to the Euler equations holds true in the energy space if and only if the energy dissipation rate of the viscous flow in a boundary layer of width proportional to the viscosity vanishes. Of course, if one considers the motion of a solid body in an incompressible fluid, with a no-slip condition at the interface, the issue of the inviscid limit is as least as difficult. However it is not clear i…
In this article, I will report a Lax pair structure, a Backlund-Darboux transformation, and the investigation of homoclinic structures for 2D Euler equations of incompressible inviscid fluids.
We study the inviscid damping of Couette flow with an exponentially stratified density. The optimal decay rates of the velocity field and the density are obtained for general perturbations with minimal regularity. For Boussinesq approximation model, the decay rates we get are consistent with the previous results in the literature. We also study the decay rates for the full Euler equations of stratified fluids, which were not studied before. For both models, the decay rates depend on the Richardson number in a very similar way. Besides, we also study the dispersive decay due to the exponential …
It is still an open problem whether the inhibition phenomenon of Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) instability by horizontal magnetic field can be mathematically proved in a non-resistive magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) fluid in a two-dimensional (2D) horizontal slab domain, since it had been roughly verified by a 2D linearized motion equations in 2012 \cite{WYC}. In this paper, we find that this inhibition phenomenon can be rigorously verified in the inhomogeneous, incompressible, inviscid case with velocity damping. More precisely, there exists a critical number $m_{\rm{C}}$ such that if the strength $|m|$ of…
Nadirashvili presented a beautiful example showing that the Poincaré recurrence does not occur near a particular solution to the 2D Euler equation of inviscid incompressible fluids. Unfortunately, Nadirashvili's setup of the phase space is not appropriate, and details of the proof are missing. This note fixes that.

In the present paper, we prove the a priori estimates of Sobolev norms for a free boundary problem of the incompressible inviscid MHD equations in all physical spatial dimensions $n=2$ and 3 by adopting a geometrical point of view used in Christodoulou-Lindblad CPAM 2000, and estimating quantities such as the second fundamental form and the velocity of the free surface. We identify the well-posedness condition that the outer normal derivative of the total pressure including the fluid and magnetic pressures is negative on the free boundary, which is similar to the physical condition (Taylor sig…
We consider the Rayleigh-Taylor problem for two compressible, immiscible, inviscid, barotropic fluids evolving with a free interface in the presence of a uniform gravitational field. After constructing Rayleigh-Taylor steady-state solutions with a denser fluid lying above the free interface with the second fluid, we turn to an analysis of the equations obtained from linearizing around such a steady state. By a natural variational approach, we construct normal mode solutions that grow exponentially in time with rate like $e^{t \sqrt{\absξ}}$, where $ξ$ is the spatial frequency of the normal mod…
We present here a constructive method of Lagrangian approximate control- lability for the Euler equation. We emphasize on different options that could be used for numerical recipes: either, in the case of a bi-dimensionnal fluid, the use of formal com- putations in the framework of explicit Runge approximations of holomorphic functions by rational functions, or an approach based on the study of the range of an operator by showing a density result. For this last insight in view of numerical simulations in progress, we analyse through a simplified problem the observed instabilities.
We study the convergence rate of the solutions of the incompressible Euler-$α$, an inviscid second-grade complex fluid, equations to the corresponding solutions of the Euler equations, as the regularization parameter $α$ approaches zero. First we show the convergence in $H^{s}$, $s>n/2+1$, in the whole space, and that the smooth Euler-$α$ solutions exist at least as long as the corresponding solution of the Euler equations. Next we estimate the convergence rate for two-dimensional vortex patch with smooth boundaries.
We consider the dynamics of a layer of an incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic field in a two-dimensional horizontally periodic setting. The upper boundary is in contact with the atmosphere, and the lower boundary is a rigid flat bottom. We prove the global well-posedness of the inviscid and resistive problem with surface tension around a non-horizontal uniform magnetic field; moreover, the solution decays to the equilibrium almost exponentially. One of the key observations here is an induced damping structure for the fluid vorticity due to the resistivity…
We consider the compressible Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a barotropic fluid with density dependent viscosity confined in a three-dimensional bounded domain $Ω$. We show the convergence of the weak solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes system to the strong solution to the compressible Euler system when the viscosity and the damping coefficients tend to zero.
A shell-type model of an inviscid fluid, previously considered in the literature, is investigated in absence of external force. Energy dissipation of positive solutions is proved and decay of energy like $t^{-2}$ is established. Self-similar decaying positive solutions are introduced and proved to exist and classified. Coalescence and blow-up are obtained as a consequence, in the class of arbitrary sign solutions.
The classical plane Couette flow, plane Poiseuille flow, and pipe Poiseuille flow share some universal 3D steady coherent structure in the form of "streak-roll-critical layer". As the Reynolds number approaches infinity, the steady coherent structure approaches a 3D limiting shear of the form ($U(y,z), 0, 0$) in velocity variables. All such 3D shears are steady states of the 3D Euler equations. This raises the importance of investigating the stability of such inviscid 3D shears in contrast to the classical Rayleigh theory of inviscid 2D shears. Several general criteria of stability for such in…
The formation of singularity and breakdown of classical solutions to the three-dimensional compressible viscoelasticity and inviscid elasticity are considered. For the compressible inviscid elastic fluids, the finite-time formation of singularity in classical solutions is proved for certain initial data. For the compressible viscoelastic fluids, a criterion in term of the temporal integral of the velocity gradient is obtained for the breakdown of smooth solutions.
We give lower bounds for the lifespan of a solution to the inviscid Boussinesq system. In dimension two, we point out that it tends to infinity when the initial (relative) temperature tends to zero. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first result of this kind for the inviscid Boussinesq system. In passing, we provide continuation criteria (of independent interest) in the $N$-dimensional case. In the second part of the paper, our method is adapted to handle the axisymmetric incompressible Euler equations with swirl.
General perturbations of a spherical gas bubble in a compressible and inviscid fluid with surface tension were proved in Shapiro and Weinstein (2011), in the linearized approximation, to decay exponentially, $\sim e^{-Γt}, Γ>0$, as time advances. Formal asymptotic and numerical evidence led to the conjecture that $Γ\approx \frac{A}ε \frac{We}{ε^{2}} \exp(-B \frac{We}{ε^2})$, where $0<ε\ll1$ is the Mach number, We is the Weber number, and $A$ and $B$ are positive constants. In this paper, we prove this conjecture and calculate $A$ and $B$ to leading order in $ε$.
We analyze the behavior of third-order in time linear and nonlinear sound waves in thermally relaxing fluids and gases as the sound diffusivity vanishes. The nonlinear acoustic propagation is modeled by the Jordan--Moore--Gibson--Thompson equation both in its Westervelt and in its Kuznetsov-type forms, that is, including quadratic nonlinearities of the type $(u^2)_{tt}$ and $ (u_t^2 + |\nabla u|^2)_t$. As it turns out, sufficiently smooth solutions of these equations converge in the energy norm to the solutions of the corresponding inviscid models at a linear rate. Numerical experiments illust…
In this paper, we prove the leading term of time-asymptotics of the moving vacuum boundary for compressible inviscid flows with damping to be that for Barenblatt self-similar solutions to the corresponding porous media equations obtained by simplifying momentum equations via Darcy's law plus the possible shift due to the movement of the center of mass, in the one-dimensional and three-dimensional spherically symmetric motions, respectively. This gives a complete description of the large time asymptotic behavior of solutions to the corresponding vacuum free boundary problems. The results obtain…
We consider two models of a compressible inviscid isentropic two-fluid flow. The first one describes the liquid-gas two-phase flow. The second one can describe the mixture of two fluids of different densities or the mixture of fluid and particles. Introducing an entropy-like function, we reduce the equations of both models to a symmetric form which looks like the compressible Euler equations written in the nonconservative form in terms of the pressure, the velocity and the entropy. Basing on existing results for the Euler equations, this gives a number of instant results for both models. In pa…
We concern with the global existence and large time behavior of compressible fluids (including the inviscid gases, viscid gases, and Boltzmann gases) in an infinitely expanding ball. Such a problem is one of the interesting models in studying the theory of global smooth solutions to multidimensional compressible gases with time dependent boundaries and vacuum states at infinite time. Due to the conservation of mass, the fluid in the expanding ball becomes rarefied and eventually tends to a vacuum state meanwhile there are no appearances of vacuum domains in any part of the expansive ball, whic…
