We investigate the dynamics of quantized vortices in a model two-dimensional supersolid. Starting from an effective action that captures the dynamics of the superfluid condensate and its coupling to the lattice displacements, we integrate out the low-energy Goldstone modes-the phonons of the solid and the superfluid condensate-to arrive at an effective action for the vortices in the condensate. In the low-velocity limit we calculate the effective inertial mass for the vortices, and we find that the mass has a logarithmic frequency dependence, similar to the inertial mass found in superfluid vortices. The vortex dynamics also includes a Magnus force term in the equation of motion that arises from the Berry phase in the effective action.
Experiments on dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates have recently reported the observation of supersolidity. Although quantized vortices constitute a key probe of superfluidity, their observability in dipolar supersolids is largely prevented by the strong density depletion caused by the formation of droplets. We present a novel approach to the nucleation of vortices and their observation, based on the quenching of the s-wave scattering length across the superfluid-supersolid transition. Starting from a slowly rotating, vortex-free, configuration in the superfluid phase, we predict vortex nucleati…
We study the properties of singly-quantized linear vortices in the supersolid phase of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature modeling $^{164}$Dy atoms. The system is extended in the $x-y$ plane and confined by a harmonic trap in the the polarization direction $z$. Our study is based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We characterize the ground state of the system in terms of spatial order and superfluid fraction and compare the properties of a single vortex and of a vortex dipole in the superfluid phase (SFP) and in the supersolid phase (SSP). At variance with a vorte…
We investigate quantum turbulence in a two-dimensional trapped supersolid and demonstrate that both the wave and vortex turbulence involve triple rather than dual cascades, as in a superfluid. Because of the presence of a second gapless mode associated with translation symmetry breaking, a new $k^{-13/3}$ scaling law is predicted to occur in the wave turbulence. Simultaneous fast vortex-antivortex creation and annihilation in the interior of the oscillating supersolid results in a $k^{-1}$ scaling law in the vortex turbulence. Numerical simulations based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation confir…

We investigate the properties of quantized vortices in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensed gas by means of a generalised Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The size of the vortex core hugely increases by increasing the weight of the dipolar interaction and approaching the transition to the supersolid phase. The critical angular velocity for the existence of an energetically stable vortex decreases in the supersolid, due to the reduced value of the density in the interdroplet region. The angular momentum per particle associated with the vortex line is shown to be smaller than $\hbar$, reflecting the redu…
We study rotating quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein-condensates, in which atoms are dressed to a highly excited Rydberg state. This leads to weak effective interactions that induce a transition to a mesoscopic supersolid state. Considering slow rotation, we determine its superfluidity using Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations as well as mean field calculations. For rapid rotation, the latter reveal an interesting competition between the supersolid crystal structure and the rotation-induced vortex lattice that gives rise to new phases, including arrays of mesoscopic vortex crystals.
We investigate the rotational properties of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a toroidal geometry. Studying the ground states in the rotating frame and at fixed angular momenta, we observe that the condensate acts in distinctly different ways depending on whether it is in the superfluid or in the supersolid phase. We find that intriguingly, the toroidal dipolar condensate can support a supersolid persistent current which occurs at a local minimum in the ground state energy as a function of angular momentum, where the state has a vortex solution in the superfluid component of the co…
Vortices are expected to exist in a supersolid but experimentally their detection can be difficult because the vortex cores are localized at positions where the local density is very low. We address here this problem by performing numerical simulations of a dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) in a pancake confinement at $T=0$ K and study the effect of quantized vorticity on the phases that can be realized depending upon the ratio between dipolar and short-range interaction. By increasing this ratio the system undergoes a spontaneous density modulation in the form of an ordered arrangement o…
Within mean field Gross-Pitaevskii framework, ultra cold atomic condensates with long range interaction is predicted to have a supersolid like ground state beyond a critical interaction strength. Such mean field supersolid like ground state has periodically modulated superfluid density which implies the coexistence of superfluid and crystalline order. Ultra cold atomic system in such mean field ground state can be subjected to artificial gauge field created either through rotation or by introducing space dependent coupling among hyperfine states of the atoms using Raman lasers. Starting from t…
Dipolar condensates have recently been coaxed to form the long-sought supersolid phase. While one-dimensional supersolids may be prepared by triggering a roton instability, we find that such a procedure in two dimensions (2D) leads to a loss of both global phase coherence and crystalline order. Unlike in 1D, the 2D roton modes have little in common with the supersolid configuration. We develop a finite-temperature stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii theory that includes beyond-mean-field effects to explore the formation process in 2D and find that evaporative cooling directly into the supersolid phase…
We study supersolid-like states in a quasi-two-dimensional trapped Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit (SO) coupled spin-1 condensate. For small strengths of SO coupling $γ$ ($γ\lessapprox 0.75$), in the ferromagnetic phase, circularly-symmetric $(0,\pm 1, \pm 2)$- and $(\mp 1, 0,\pm 1)$-type states are formed where the numbers in the parentheses denote the angular momentum of the vortex at the center of the components and where the upper (lower) sign correspond to Rashba (Dresselhaus) coupling; in the antiferromagnetic phase, only $(\mp 1, 0,\pm 1)$-type states are formed. For large strengths o…

Supersolid phases as a result of a coexistence of superfluid and density ordered checkerboard phases are predicted to appear in ultracold Fermi molecules confined in a bilayer array of two-dimensional square optical lattices. We demonstrate the existence of these phases within the inhomogeneous mean-field approach. In particular, we show that tuning the interlayer separation distance at a fixed value of the chemical potential produces different fractions of superfluid, density ordered, and supersolid phases.
We theoretically investigate supersolidity in three-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates. We focus on the role of trap geometry in determining the dimensionality of the resulting droplet arrays, which range from one-dimensional to zigzag, through to two-dimensional supersolids in circular traps. Supersolidity is well established in one-dimensional arrays, and may be just as favorable in two-dimensional arrays provided that one appropriately scales the atom number to the trap volume. We develop a tractable variational model--which we benchmark against full numerical simulations--and us…

We study a system of ultra-cold atoms possessing long range interaction (e.g. dipole-dipole interaction) in a one dimensional optical lattice in the presence of a confining harmonic trap. We have shown that for large enough on-site and nearest neighbor interaction a supersolid phase can be stabilized, consistent with the previous Quantum Monte Carlo and DMRG results for the homogeneous system. Due to the external harmonic trap potential the supersolid phase coexists with other phases. We emphasize on the experimental signatures of the various ground state phases in the presence of a trap.
Supersolid is an exotic state of matter, showing crystalline order with a superfluid background, observed recently in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a trap. Here, we present exact solutions of the desired Bloch form in the self-trapped free-floating quantum fluid. Our general solutions of the amended nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation, governing the mean-field and beyond mean-field dynamics, are obtained through a M{ö}bius transform, connecting a wide class of supersolid solutions to the ubiquitous cnoidal waves. The solutions yield the constant condensate, supersolid behavior and the…
The soft-core boson system is one of the simplest models of supersolids, which have both off-diagonal long-range order (Bose-Einstein condensation) and diagonal long-range order (crystalline order). Although this model has been studied from various points of view, studies of the stability of current-flowing states are lacking. Solving the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov equations, we obtain excitation spectra in superfluid, supersolid, and stripe phases. On the basis of the results of the excitation spectra, we present a stability phase diagram that shows the region of the metastable superflow…
We study the rotational inertia of a model of supersolid in the frame of the mean field Gross-Pitaevskii theory in one space dimension. We discuss the ground state of the model and the existence of a non classical inertia (NCRI) under rotation that models an annular geometry. An explicit formula for the NCRI is deduced. It depends on the density profil of the ground state, in full agreement with former theories. We compare the NCRI computed through this theory with direct numerical simulations of rotating 1D systems.
We demonstrate that superflow past an obstacle is possible in a solid phase in the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a finite-range two-body interaction. The phenomenon we find is analogous to the DC Josephson effect in superconductors and we deduce the "Josephson relation" between the current and phase difference of the condensates separated by the obstacle. We also discuss persistent current and nonclassical rotational inertia in annular container with a penetrable potential barrier. The phase diagram in the plane of the current and the interaction strength is given. Our result …
Supersolidity -- a quantum-mechanical phenomenon characterized by the presence of both superfluidity and crystalline order -- was initially envisioned in the context of bulk solid helium, as a possible answer to the question of whether a solid could have superfluid properties. While supersolidity has not been observed in solid helium (despite much effort), ultracold atomic gases have provided a fundamentally new approach, recently enabling the observation and study of supersolids with dipolar atoms. However, unlike the proposed phenomena in helium, these gaseous systems have so far only shown …
The Haldane Insulator is a gapped phase characterized by an exotic non-local order parameter. The parameter regimes at which it might exist, and how it competes with alternate types of order, such as supersolid order, are still incompletely understood. Using the Stochastic Green Function (SGF) quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG), we study numerically the ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional bosonic Hubbard model (BHM) with contact and near neighbor repulsive interactions. We show that, depending on the ratio of the near neighbor to contact…
We consider rotating finite size vortex arrays in Bose-Einstein condensates that are confined by cylindrically symmetric external potentials. We show that such systems possess two exact Nambu-Goldstone zero modes associated with two spontaneously broken continuous symmetries of the system. We verify our analytical result via direct numerical diagonalizations of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We conclude by comparing rotating vortex lattices in superfluids to supersolids and discrete time crystals.
Recent breakthrough experiments on dipolar condensates have reported the creation of supersolids, including two-dimensional arrays of quantum droplets. Droplet arrays are, however, not the only possible non-trivial density arrangement resulting from the interplay of mean-field instability and quantum stabilization. Several other possible density patterns may occur in trapped condensates at higher densities, including the so-called honeycomb supersolid, a phase that exists, as it is also the case of a triangular droplet supersolid, in the thermodynamic limit. We show that compared to droplet su…
We analyze the nucleation of supersolid order out of the superfluid ground state of bosons on the triangular lattice. While the stability of supersolidity against phase separation in this system is by now well established for nearest-neighbor and long-range dipolar interactions, relevant for two-dimensional arrays of ultra-cold polar molecules, here we address directly the nature of the superfluid-to-supersolid transition. Based on symmetry arguments and quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we conclude that this quantum phase transition is driven first-order beyond the line of particle-hole symmet…
We investigate two-species bosons in a two-dimensional square lattice by quantum Monte Carlo method. We show that the inter-species attraction and nearest-neighbor intra-species repulsion results in the pair-supersolid phase, where a diagonal solid order coexists with an off-diagonal pair-superfluid order. The quantum and thermal transitions out of the pair-supersolid phase are characterized. It is found that there is a direct first order transition from the pair-supersolid phase to the double-superfluid phase without an intermediate region. Furthermore, the melting of the pair-supersolid occu…
We demonstrate spontaneous generation of spatially-periodic supersolid-like super-lattice and stripe solitons in Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupled spin-1 and spin-2 quasi-two-dimensional nonmagnetic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The solitons in a weakly SO-coupled spin-1 BEC are circularly-symmetric of $(-1, 0, +1)$ and $(0, +1, +2)$ types and have inherent vorticity; the numbers in the parentheses are the winding numbers in hyper-spin components $+1, 0, -1$, respectively. The circularly-symmetric solitons in an SO-coupled spin-2 BEC are of types $(-2, -1, 0, +1, +2)$ and $(-1, 0, +1, +2, +3)…
We investigate the zero-temperature excitation spectrum of two-dimensional soft-core bosons for a wide range parameters and across the phase transition from a superfluid to a supersolid state. Based on mean field calculations and recent Quantum Monte Carlo results, we demonstrate the applicability of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, even at high interaction strengths where the system forms an insulating cluster crystal. Interestingly, our study reveals that the maximum energy of the longitudinal phonon band in the supersolid phase connects to the maxon energy of the superfluid at the phase …
Supersolid, a fascinating quantum state of matter, features novel phenomena such as the non-classical rotational inertia and transport anomalies. It is a long standing issue of the coexistence of superfluidity and broken translational symmetry in condensed matter physics. By recent experimental advances to create tunable synthetic spin-orbit coupling in ultracold gases, such highly controllable atomic systems would provide new possibilities to access supersolidity with no counterpart in solids. Here we report that the combination of anharmonicity of trapping potential and spin-orbit coupling w…
We study the stability of solid- and supersolid (SS) phases of a three-dimensional spin- and a hardcore-Bose-Hubbard models on a body-centered cubic lattice. To see the quantum effects on the stability of the SS phase, we model the vacancies (interstitials) introduced in the solid, which are believed responsible for the appearance of the SS phase, by spinwave bosons and adopt the interaction between the condensed bosons as a criterion. A repulsive nature of the low-energy effective interaction is the necessary condition for a second-order solid-SS transition and, when this condition is met, no…
We study the behavior of the excitation spectrum across the quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a supersolid phase of a dipolar Bose gas confined to a one-dimensional geometry. Including the leading beyond-mean-field effects within an effective Hamiltonian, the analysis is based on Bogoliubov theory with several order parameters accounting for the superfluid as well as solid structure. We find fast convergence of the ground-state energy in the supersolid with the number of order parameters and demonstrate a stable excitation spectrum with two Goldstone modes and an amplitude mode in …
We investigate the quench dynamics of the dipolar bosons in two dimensional optical lattice of square geometry using the time dependent Gutzwiller method. The system exhibits different density orders like the checkerboard and the striped pattern, depending upon the polarization angle of the dipoles. We quench the hopping parameter across the striped density wave (SDW) to striped supersolid (SSS) phase transition, and obtain the scaling laws for the correlation length and topological vortex density, as function of the quench rate. The results are reminiscent of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM).…
Using an unbiased quantum Monte Carlo method, we obtain convincing evidence of the existence of a checkerboard supersolid at a {\it commensurate} filling factor 1/2 (commensurate supersolid) in the soft-core Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor repulsions on a cubic lattice. In conventional cases, supersolids are realized at incommensurate filling factors by a doped-defect-condensation mechanism, where particles (holes) doped into a perfect crystal act as interstitials (vacancies) and delocalize in the crystal order. However, in the above model, a supersolid state is stabilized even at the…
We present a theory for the emergence of a supersolid state in a cigar-shaped dipolar quantum Bose gas. Our approach is based on a reduced three-dimensional (3D) theory, where the condensate wavefunction is decomposed into an axial field and a transverse part described variationally. This provides an accurate fully 3D description that is specific to the regime of current experiments and efficient to compute. We apply this theory to understand the phase diagram for a gas in an infinite tube potential. We find that the supersolid transition has continuous and discontinuous regions as the average…
By means of a mean-field method, we have studied the zero temperature structure and excitation spectrum of a three-dimensional soft-core bosonic system for a value of the interaction strength that favors a crystal structure made of atomic nano-clusters arranged with FCC ordering. In addition to the longitudinal and transverse phonon branches expected for a normal crystal, the excitation spectrum shows a soft mode related to the breaking of gauge symmetry, which signals a partial superfluid character of the solid. Additional evidence of supersolidity is provided by the calculation of the superf…
We theoretically investigate the ground states and the spectrum of elementary excitations across the superfluid to droplet crystallization transition of an oblate dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. We systematically identify regimes where spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking leads to the emergence of a supersolid phase with characteristic collective excitations, such as the Higgs amplitude mode. Furthermore, we study the dynamics across the transition and show how these supersolids can be realized with standard protocols in state-of-the-art experiments.
In this paper, we study the dynamics of the Bose-Hubbard model with the nearest-neighbor repulsion by using time-dependent Gutzwiller methods. Near the unit filling, the phase diagram of the model contains density wave (DW), supersolid (SS) and superfluid (SF). The three phases are separated by two second-order phase transitions. We study "slow-quench" dynamics by varying the hopping parameter in the Hamiltonian as a function of time. In the phase transitions from the DW to SS and from the DW to SF, we focus on how the SF order forms and study scaling laws of the SF correlation length, vortex …
