In this study, we investigate the behavior of ModMax-de Sitter black holes when perturbed by massless neutral scalar fields. Specifically, we analyze how the relaxation time, defined as the inverse of the fundamental imaginary frequency, varies with respect to two key parameters: the cosmological constant and the nonlinear parameter characterizing the ModMax theory. We explore scenarios both with and without a cosmological constant, focusing on the static charged ModMax black hole configuration. Our results reveal dependencies between the relaxation time and the nonlinear parameter, shedding light on the dynamical properties of these black hole systems. We also show the validity of WKB approximation under consideration.
In this article, we study the quantum dynamics of a Klein-Gordon field on de-Sitter space. We prove time evolution is not unitarily implementable. We also consider a Klein-Gordon field perturbed by a local potential V. In this case we prove that the deviation from the V=0 dynamics is unitarily implementable.
In this paper a quantum N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory perturbed by dilaton-coupled scalars and spinor fields is considered. The induced effective action for such a theory is calculated on a dilaton-gravitational background using the conformal anomaly found via the AdS/CFT correspondence. Considering such an effective action (using the large N method) as a quantum correction to the classical gravity action with cosmological constant, we study the effect from the dilaton on the scale factor (this corresponds to an inflationary universe without dilaton). It is shown that, depending on the initial…

This paper seeks to check the validity of the "apparent fractal conjecture" (Ribeiro 2001ab: gr-qc/9909093, astro-ph/0104181), which states that the observed power-law behaviour for the average density of large-scale distribution of galaxies arises when some observational quantities, selected by their relevance in average density profile determination, are calculated along the past light cone. Implementing these conditions in the proposed set of observational relations profoundly changes the behaviour of many observables in the standard cosmological models. In particular, the average density b…
It has been shown that the quasinormal modes of perturebated fields can be used to investigate the validity of strong cosmic censorship (SCC). Relevant issues for Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter (RNdS) black holes and Born-Infeld-de Sitter (BI-dS) black holes have been discussed. In this paper, we investigate SCC in an asymptotic RN-dS black hole with logarithmic nonlinear electromagnetic field perturbed by massless scalar fields. It has been argued that SCC can be violated in a near-extremal RN-dS black hole. However, we find that the NLED effect can rescue SCC for a near-extremal logarithmic-de…
Backreactions are considered in a de Sitter spacetime whose cosmological constant is generated by the potential of scalar field. The leading order gravitational effect of nonlinear matter fluctuations is analyzed and it is found that the initial value problem for the perturbed Einstein equations possesses linearization instabilities. We show that these linearization instabilities can be avoided by assuming strict de Sitter invariance of the quantum states of the linearized fluctuations. We furthermore show that quantum anomalies do not block the invariance requirement. This invariance constrai…
It is found that de-Sitter spacetime, the constant-curvature matter-free solution of the Einstein equations with a positive cosmological constant, becomes classically unstable due to the dynamic effects of a certain type of vector field (fundamentally different from a gauge field). The perturbed de-Sitter universe evolves towards a final exotic singularity. The relevant vector-field configurations violate the strong and dominant energy conditions.
Scalar-tensor theory of gravity with non-minimal coupling is a fairly good candidate for dark energy, required to explain late-time cosmic evolution. Here we study the very early stage of evolution of the universe with a modified version of the theory, which includes scalar curvature squared term. One of the key aspects of the present study is that, the quantum dynamics of the action under consideration ends up generically with de-Sitter expansion under semiclassical approximation, rather than power-law. This justifies the analysis of inflationary regime with de-Sitter expansion. The other key…
Nonlinear perturbations of Friedmann-Lemaitre cosmologies with dust and a positive cosmological constant have recently attracted considerable attention. In this paper our first goal is to compare the evolution of the first and second order perturbations by determining their asymptotic behaviour at late times in ever-expanding models. We show that in the presence of spatial curvature K or a positive cosmological constant, the density perturbation approaches a finite limit both to first and second order, but the rate of approach depends on the model, being power law in the scale factor if the co…
Recent work indicates that the strong cosmic censorship hypothesis is violated by nearly extremal Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes. It was argued that perturbations of such a black hole decay sufficiently rapidly that the perturbed spacetime can be extended across the Cauchy horizon as a weak solution of the equations of motion. In this paper we consider the case of Kerr-de Sitter black holes. We find that, for any non-extremal value of the black hole parameters, there are quasinormal modes which decay sufficiently slowly to ensure that strong cosmic censorship is respected. Our analys…
An invariant definition of mass in asymptotically de-Sitter space-times is given that relies on the existence of a time-like Killing vector on a sphere surrounding the mass but does not require going to an asymptotic region. In particular the mass can be calculated exactly on a sphere inside the cosmological horizon. The formalism requires varying the background metric solution by a perturbation that satisfies the linearized equations of motion but need not share the Killing symmetry of the solution and is therefore ideally suited to calculating masses in stationary space-times perturbed by a …
We have shown that higher dimensional Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes are gravitationally unstable for large values of the electric charge and cosmological constant in $D \geq 7$ space-time dimensions. We have found the shape of the slightly perturbed black hole at the threshold point of instability. Why only $D=4, 5$ and 6 dimensional worlds are favorable as to the black stability remains unknown.
We discuss the quantization of linearized gravity in the background de Sitter spacetime using a gauge-invariant formalism to write the perturbed gravitational field in the static patch. This field is quantized after fixing the gauge completely. The response rate of this field to monochromatic multipole sources is then computed in the thermal equilibrium state with the well known Gibbons-Hawking temperature. We compare this response rate with the one obtained in the Bunch-Davies-like vacuum state defined in the Poincaré patch. These response rates are found to be the same as expected. This agre…
In this paper we study under which conditions the Reissner-Nordström-anti de Sitter black hole can be a solution of the vacuum mimetic $F(R)$ gravity with Lagrange multiplier and mimetic scalar potential. As we demonstrate, the resulting picture in the mimetic $F(R)$ gravity case, is different in comparison to the ordinary $F(R)$ gravity case, with the two descriptions resulting to a different set of constraints that need to hold true. We also investigate the metric perturbations in the mimetic $F(R)$ gravity case, for the Reissner-Nordström-anti de Sitter black hole metric, at first order of …
We study the propagation of a massless scalar wave in de Sitter spacetime perturbed by an arbitrary central mass. By focusing on the late time limit, this probes the portion of the scalar signal traveling inside the null cone. Unlike in asymptotically flat spacetimes, the amplitude of the scalar field detected by an observer at timelike infinity does not decay back to zero but develops a spacetime constant shift - both at zeroth and first order in the central mass M. This indicates that massless scalar field propagation in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes exhibits both linear and nonlinear …
It is important to re-examine some of the interactions of gravitational waves with matter due to the recent discovery of the waves in LIGO. In a previous paper with Morales, interaction of gravitational waves was studied with scalar and neutrino fields in Minkowski space-time. In this paper, we find that electromagnetic waves have a similar interaction with gravitational wave in a flat background, and we comment on the implications of this for a gravitational wave detector. Primordial gravitational waves were generated in the early universe and thus it is important to study interaction of the …
We study the nonlinear evolution of a weakly perturbed anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime by solving numerically the four-dimensional spherically symmetric Einstein-massless-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant. Our results suggest that AdS spacetime is unstable under arbitrarily small generic perturbations. We conjecture that this instability is triggered by a resonant mode mixing which gives rise to diffusion of energy from low to high frequencies.
We show that the graviton acquires a mass in a de Sitter background given by $m_{g}^{2}=-{2/3}Λ.$ This is precisely the fine-tuning value required for the perturbed gravitational field to mantain its two degrees of freedom.
A perturbed Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter solution is used to emphasize the nature of the singularity along the Cauchy horizon of a charged spherically symmetric black hole. For these solutions, conditions may prevail under which the mass function is bounded and yet the curvature scalar $R_{αβγδ} R^{αβγδ}$ diverges.
We consider the intermediate and end state behavior of the superradiantly perturbed Kerr black hole. Superradiant scattering in an asymptotically flat background is considered first. The case of a Kerr black hole in an Anti de-Sitter background is then discussed. Specifically we review what is known about the superradiant instability arising in AdS and its possible end state behavior.
We observe that the standard homogeneous cosmologies, those of Minkowski, de Sitter, and anti-de Sitter, which form the matrix for the Robertson--Walker scale factor, live naturally as isolated points inside a larger family of conformally flat metrics obtained by allowing a tensor containing the information of conformal symmetry breaking to be more general. So the standard cosmological metrics are parametrically unstable in this sense, and therefore unphysical. When we pass to the stable family of perturbed metrics, we immediately encounter a scalar field, which drives the conformal expansion …
The nonmodal linear stability of the Schwarzschild black hole established in Phys. Rev. Lett. 112 (2014) 191101 is generalized to the case of a nonnegative cosmological constant $Λ$. Two gauge invariant combinations $G_{\pm}$ of perturbed scalars made out of the Weyl tensor and its first covariant derivative are found such that the map $[h_{αβ}] \to \left( G_- \left([h_{αβ}] \right), G_+ \left([h_{αβ}] \right) \right)$ with domain the set of equivalent classes $[h_{αβ}]$ under gauge transformations of solutions of the linearized Einstein's equation, is invertible. The way to reconstruct a repr…
For every mapping of a perturbed spacetime onto a background and with any vector field $ξ$ we construct a conserved covariant vector density $I(ξ)$, which is the divergence of a covariant antisymmetric tensor density, a "superpotential". $ I(ξ)$ is linear in the energy-momentum tensor perturbations of matter, which may be large; $I(ξ)$ does not contain the second order derivatives of the perturbed metric. The superpotential is identically zero when perturbations are absent. By integrating conserved vectors over a part $\Si$ of a hypersurface $S$ of the background, which spans a two-surface $\d…
Quasinormal modes are characteristic oscillatory modes that control the relaxation of a perturbed physical system back to its equilibrium state. In this work, we calculate QNM frequencies and angular eigenvalues of Kerr--de Sitter black holes using a novel method based on conformal field theory. The spin-field perturbation equations of this background spacetime essentially reduce to two Heun's equations, one for the radial part and one for the angular part. We use the accessory parameter expansion of Heun's equation, obtained via the isomonodromic $τ$-function, in order to find analytic expans…
We show that the dragging of the axis directions of local inertial frames by a weighted average of the energy currents in the universe is exact for all linear perturbations of any Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe with K = (+1, -1, 0) and of Einstein's static closed universe. This includes FRW universes which are arbitrarily close to the Milne Universe, which is empty, and to the de Sitter universe. Hence the postulate formulated by E. Mach about the physical cause for the time-evolution of the axis directions of inertial frames is shown to hold in cosmological General Relativity for l…

We study the second-order perturbations in the Einstein-de Sitter Universe in synchronous coordinate. We solve the second-order perturbed Einstein equation with scalar-tensor, and tensor-tensor couplings between 1st order perturbations, and obtain, for each coupling, the solutions of scalar, vector, tensor metric perturbations, including both the growing and decaying modes for general initial conditions. We perform general synchronous-to-synchronous gauge transformations up to 2nd order, which are generated by a 1st order vector field and a 2nd order vector field, and obtain all the residual g…
We use cosmological perturbation theory to study the backreaction effects of a self-consistent and well-defined cosmological averaging on the dynamics and the evolution of the Universe. Working with a perturbed Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker Einstein-de Sitter cosmological solution in a comoving volume-preserving gauge, we compute the expressions for the expansion scalar and deceleration parameter to second order, which we use to characterize the backreaction. We find that the fractional shift in the Hubble parameter with respect to the input background cosmological model is Delta~10^{-5},…
We present a systematic study of the 2nd order scalar, vector and tensor metric perturbations in the Einstein-de Sitter Universe in synchronous coordinates. For the scalar-scalar coupling between 1st order perturbations, we decompose the 2nd order perturbed Einstein equation into the respective field equations of 2nd order scalar, vector, and tensor perturbations, and obtain their solutions with general initial conditions. In particular, the decaying modes of solution are included, the 2nd order vector is generated even the 1st order vector is absent, and the solution of 2nd order tensor corre…
In inflationary cosmological models driven by an inflaton field the origin of the primordial inhomogeneities which are responsible for large scale structure formation are the quantum fluctuations of the inflaton field. These are usually computed using the standard theory of cosmological perturbations, where both the gravitational and the inflaton fields are linearly perturbed and quantized. The correlation functions for the primordial metric fluctuations and their power spectrum are then computed. Here we introduce an alternative procedure for computing the metric correlations based on the Ein…
We investigate perturbations of a class of spherically symmetric solutions in massive gravity and bi-gravity. The background equations of motion for the particular class of solutions we are interested in reduce to a set of the Einstein equations with a cosmological constant. Thus, the solutions in this class include all the spherically symmetric solutions in general relativity, such as the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker solution and the Schwarzschild (-de Sitter) solution, though the one-parameter family of two parameters of the theory admits such a class of solutions. We find that the eq…
Scattering amplitudes at weak coupling are highly constrained by Lorentz invariance, locality and unitarity, and depend on model details only through coupling constants and particle content. In this paper, we develop an understanding of inflationary correlators which parallels that of flat-space scattering amplitudes. Specifically, we study slow-roll inflation with weak couplings to extra massive particles, for which all correlators are controlled by an approximate conformal symmetry on the boundary of the spacetime. After classifying all possible contact terms in de Sitter space, we derive an…
The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model can be used to describe black holes (BHs) in two-dimensional nearly-anti-de-Sitter gravity. We show that when such BHs are perturbed by a time-dependent negative-energy perturbation, their interior can be partially revealed. In the SYK model, a partial measurement of the state of the Majorana fermion pairs allows one to construct a matching time-dependent negative-energy perturbation of the BH geometry that shifts the state of the BH away from its equilibrium state. Kourkoulou and Maldacena showed that, if the perturbation is strong enough, the interior can be…
Recently, there has been quite a lot of interest in static, spherical wormhole spacetimes and the question of their stability with respect to time-dependent perturbations. The consideration of linearized perturbations usually leads to a master wave equation with effective potential which can then be analyzed using standard tools from quantum mechanics. However, in the wormhole case, particular care must be taken with the gauge conditions when formulating the master equation. A poor coordinate choice, based for example on fixing the areal radial coordinate, may lead to singularities at the thro…
We study the dynamics of unstable Reissner-Nordström anti-de Sitter black holes under charged scalar field perturbations in spherical symmetry. We unravel their general behavior and approach to the final equlibrium state. In the first part of this work, we present a numerical analysis of massive charged scalar field quasinormal modes. We identify the known mode families - superradiant modes, zero-damped modes, AdS modes, and the near-horizon mode - and we track their migration under variation of the black hole and field parameters. We show that the zero-damped modes become superradiantly unsta…
