We have shown that higher dimensional Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes are gravitationally unstable for large values of the electric charge and cosmological constant in $D \geq 7$ space-time dimensions. We have found the shape of the slightly perturbed black hole at the threshold point of instability. Why only $D=4, 5$ and 6 dimensional worlds are favorable as to the black stability remains unknown.
We present the improved Mathematica code which computes quasinormal frequencies with the help of the Bernstein spectral method for a general class of black holes, allowing for asymptotically flat, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter asymptotic. The method is especially efficient when searching for purely imaginary and unstable modes and here it is used for detecting the instability region of a charged scalar field in the background of the charged asymptotically de Sitter dilatonic black hole. We show that the instability has superradiant nature and the dilaton field essentially influences the region o…
We show that there is a class of regular charged black hole with a charged de Sitter core similar to the de Sitter-Schwarzschild black hole. One can show that the total energy momentum tensor for the static and spherically symmetric photon field can be made conserved even the Coulomb like energy momentum tensor for photon is not conserved alone. Possible impact and the numerical solutions of the charged black hole will be shown in this paper.
We investigate in detail the mechanism of superradiance to render the instability of Kerr-de Sitter black holes in scalar-tensor gravity. Our results provide more clues to examine the scalar-tensor gravity in the astrophysical black holes in the universe with cosmological constant. We also discuss the spontaneous scalarization in the de Sitter background and find that this instability can also happen in the spherical de Sitter configuration in a special style.
In our earlier work (PRL 103 (2009) 161101) it was shown that nonextremal highly charged Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes are gravitationally unstable in D>6-dimensional space-times. Here, we find accurate threshold values of the $Λ$-term at which the instability of the extremally charged black holes starts. The larger $D$ is, the smaller is the threshold value of $Λ$. We have shown that the ratio $ρ= r_{h}/r_{cos}$ (where $r_{cos}$ and $r_{h}$ are the cosmological and event horizons) is proportional to $e^{-(D-4)/2}$ at the onset of instability for D=7,8,...11, implying that the same …
It is found that de-Sitter spacetime, the constant-curvature matter-free solution of the Einstein equations with a positive cosmological constant, becomes classically unstable due to the dynamic effects of a certain type of vector field (fundamentally different from a gauge field). The perturbed de-Sitter universe evolves towards a final exotic singularity. The relevant vector-field configurations violate the strong and dominant energy conditions.
It has been shown recently that the strong cosmic censorship conjecture is violated by near-extremal Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter black holes. We investigate whether the introduction of a charged scalar field can rescue strong cosmic censorship. We find that such a field improves the situation but there is always a neighbourhood of extremality in which strong cosmic censorship is violated by perturbations arising from smooth initial data.
We obtain a charged black lens solution in the five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with a positive cosmological constant. It is shown that the solution obtained here describes the formation of a black hole with the spatial cross section of a sphere from that of the lens space of L(n,1) in five-dimensional de Sitter space.
Black holes typically inhabit highly dynamical galactic environments and are frequently permeated by accretion media. The inevitable scattering of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational waves off rotating and charged black holes provides a remarkable demonstration of the energy extraction and subsequent amplification of scattered waves under the expense of the compact object's rotational and electromagnetic energy; a phenomenon known as superradiance. Certain circumstances tremendously favor the energy extraction process in such extent that linear superradiant instabilities are triggered. W…
We study the superradiance instability of charged massive scalar field in the background of Kerr-Newman-anti-de Sitter black hole. By employing the asymptotic matching technique to solve Klein-Gordon equation analytically, the complex parts of quasinormal frequencies are shown to be positive in the regime of superradiance. Because the calculation is performed in the approximation of small black hole, the result indicates that small Kerr-Newman-anti-de Sitter black hole is unstable against the massive scalar field perturbation with small charge.
Instabilities of two dimensional (1+1) de Sitter space induced by interacting fields are studied. As for the case of flat Minkowski space, several interacting fermion models can be translated into free boson ones and vice versa. It is found that interacting fermion theories do not lead to any instabilities, while the interacting bosonic sine-Gordon model does lead to a breakdown of de Sitter symmetry and to the vanishing of the vacuum expectation value of the S matrix.
By using a new approach, we demonstrate analytic expressions for slowly rotating Gauss-Bonnet charged black holes with negative cosmological constant. Up to the linear order of the rotating parameter a, the mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the charged black holes get no corrections from rotation.
We study large D effective theory for D dimensional charged (Anti) de Sitter black holes. Then we show that de Sitter Reissner-Nordstrom black hole becomes unstable against gravitational perturbations at larger charge than certain critical value in higher dimension. Furthermore we find that there is a non-trivial zero-mode static perturbation at the critical charge. The existence of static perturbations suggests the appearance of non-spherical symmetric solution branches of static charged de Sitter black hole. This expectation is confirmed by constructing the non-spherical symmetric static sol…
We briefly review the evidence that anti-de Sitter spacetime is nonlinearly unstable, and the perturbative arguments that there should exist geons - nonsingular solutions to Einstein's equation with a helical symmetry. We then explicitly construct these geons numerically and discuss some of their properties. We conclude with some open questions.
We give strong numerical evidence for the existence of an instability afflicting six-dimensional Reissner-Nordström de Sitter (RNdS) black holes. This instability is akin of the Konoplya-Zhidenko instability present in RNdS black holes in seven spacetime dimensions and above. Moreover, we perform a detailed analysis of the near-horizon limit of extremal RNdS black holes, and find that unstable gravitational modes effectively behave as a massive scalar field whose mass violates the AdS$_2$ Breitenlöhner-Freedman bound (if and only if $d\geq 6$), thus providing a physical argument for the existe…
Recent numerical investigations have uncovered a surprising result: Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes are unstable for spacetime dimensions larger than 6. Here we prove the existence of such instability analytically, and we compute the timescale in the near-extremal limit. We find very good agreement with the previous numerical results. Our results may me helpful in shedding some light on the nature of the instability.
As in the grand canonical treatment of Reissner - Nordström black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetime, the canonical ensemble formulation also shows that non-extremal black holes tend to have lower action than extremal ones. However, some small non-extremal black holes have higher action, leading to the possibility of transitions between non-extremal and extremal black holes.
We investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in charged anti-de Sitter black holes with thermodynamic pressure and volume by the scattering of the charged scalar field in four and higher dimensions. We assume that the internal energy and electric charge of the black hole changes infinitesimally according to the energy and charge fluxes of the scalar field. Then, found to be an isobaric process, the changes in the black hole can be well reproduced to the first law of thermodynamics, although we find that the second law of thermodynamics is violated in extremal and near-extremal black ho…
We study the instability of higher-dimensional rotating anti-de Sitter black holes through fragmentation. Fragmentation occurs when black holes rotate too fast to sustain their horizon, and then the black holes are broken into small pieces. Using this process, we test the stability of AdS black holes and discover the dynamical upper bounds of the angular momentum and the cosmological constant. We show that AdS black holes can exist stably within limited parameter ranges in the general dimensions. The parameter ranges are obtained numerically in terms of angular momentum and cosmological consta…
We find a new instability in the four-dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes against charged scalar perturbations with vanishing angular momentum, $l=0$. We show that such an instability is caused by superradiance. The instability does not occur for an larger angular index, as explicitely proven for $l=1$. Our results are obtained from a numerical investigation of the time domain profiles of the perturbations.
Starting from the equation of motion of the quantum operator of a real scalar field phi in de Sitter space-time, a simple differential equation is derived which describes the evolution of quantum fluctuations <phi^2> of this field. Full de Sitter invariance is assumed and no ad hoc infrared cutoff is introduced. This equation is solved explicitly and in massive case our result agrees with the standard one. In massless case the large time behavior of our solution differs by sign from the expression found in earlier papers. A possible cause of discrepancy may be a spontaneous breaking of de Sitt…
We study the instability of the charged Gauss-Bonnet de Sitter black holes under gravito-electromagnetic perturbations. We adopt two criteria to search for an instability of the scalar type perturbations, including the local instability criterion based on the $AdS_2$ Breitenlöhner-Freedman (BF) bound at extremality and the dynamical instability via quasinormal modes by full numerical analysis. We uncover the gravitational instability in five spacetime dimensions and above, and construct the complete parameter space in terms of the ratio of event and cosmological horizons and the Gauss-Bonnet c…
The linearized dynamics of charged massive scalar fields in the near-extremal charged Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter (RNdS) black-hole spacetime is studied analytically. Interestingly, it is proved that the non-asymptotically flat charged black-hole-field system is characterized by {\it unstable} (exponentially growing in time) complex resonant modes. Using a WKB analysis in the eikonal large-mass regime $Mμ\gg1$, we provide a remarkably compact analytical formula for the quasinormal resonant spectrum $\{ω_n(M,Q,Λ,μ,q)\}_{n=0}^{n=\infty}$ which characterizes the unstable modes of the composed RN…
Thermal radiation of electrically charged fermions from rotating black hole with electric and magnetic charges in de Sitter space is considered. The tunnelling probabilities for outgoing and incoming particles are obtained and the Hawking temperature is calculated. The relation for the classical action for the particles in the black hole's background is also found.
Bizon and Rostworowski have recently suggested that anti-de Sitter spacetime might be nonlinearly unstable to transfering energy to smaller and smaller scales and eventually forming a small black hole. We consider pure gravity with a negative cosmological constant and find strong support for this idea. While one can start with a single linearized mode and add higher order corrections to construct a nonlinear geon, this is not possible starting with a linear combination of two or more modes. One is forced to add higher frequency modes with growing amplitude. The implications of this turbulent i…
We consider spherically symmetric Einstein-massless-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant in five dimensions and analyze evolution of small perturbations of anti-de Sitter spacetime using the recently proposed resonant approximation. We show that for typical initial data the solution of the resonant system develops an oscillatory singularity in finite time. This result hints at a possible route to establishing instability of AdS under arbitrarily small perturbations.
Analysis of time-domain profiles for gravitational perturbations shows that Gauss-Bonnet black holes in a de Sitter world possess a new kind of dynamical instability which does not take place for asymptotically flat Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes. The new instability is in the gravitational perturbations of the scalar type and is due to the nonvanishing cosmological constant. Analysis of the quasinormal spectrum in the stability sector shows that although the scalar type of gravitational perturbations alone does not obey Hod's conjectural bound, connecting the damping rate and the Hawking t…
We investigate the instability of the unstable circular orbit of a charged null particle to test the strong cosmic censorship conjecture in Nariai-type near-extremal Reissner--Nordström--de Sitter black holes. The instability is estimated as the Lyapunov exponent and found to depend on the mass and charge of the black hole. Then, we explicitly show that charged null particles in unstable circular orbits correspond to the charged massless scalar field in the eikonal limit. This provides a compact relationship representing the quasinormal frequency in terms of the characteristics of unstable cir…
Applying Parikh's semi-classical tunneling method, we consider Hawking radiation of the charged massive particles as a tunneling process from the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole with a global monopole. The result shows that the tunneling rate is related to the change of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the radiant spectrum is not a pure thermal one, but is consistent with an underlying unitary theory.
We investigate thermodynamic and dynamical stability of a family of six-dimensional braneworld solutions with de Sitter branes. First, we investigate thermodynamic stability in terms of de Sitter entropy. We see that the family of solutions is divided into two distinct branches: the high-entropy branch and the low-entropy branch. By analogy with ordinary thermodynamics, the high-entropy branch is expected to be stable and the low-entropy branch to be unstable. Next, we investigate dynamical stability by analyzing linear perturbations around the solutions. Perturbations are decomposed into scal…
We describe the full nonlinear development of the superradiant instability for a charged massless scalar field, coupled to general relativity and electromagnetism, in the vicinity of a Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole. The presence of the negative cosmological constant provides a natural context for considering perfectly reflecting boundary conditions and studying the dynamics as the scalar field interacts repeatedly with the black hole. At early times, small superradiant perturbations grow as expected from linearized studies. Backreaction then causes the black hole to lose charge and mass un…
It is known that the perturbative instability of tensor excitations in higher derivative gravity may not take place if the initial frequency of the gravitational waves are below the Planck threshold. One can assume that this is a natural requirement if the cosmological background is sufficiently mild, since in this case the situation is qualitatively close to the free gravitational wave in flat space. Here, we explore the opposite situation and consider the effect of a very far from Minkowski radiation-dominated or de Sitter cosmological background with a large Hubble rate, e.g., typical of an…
We present fully dynamical solutions to Einstein-scalar theory in asymptotically Anti-de-Sitter spacetime with a scalar potential containing particularly rich physics. Depending on one parameter in the potential we find an especially interesting regime, which exhibits a thermodynamically stable, but dynamically unstable black brane, even at zero momentum. We show this using the non-linear dynamics, and give a clear interpretation in terms of the spectrum of linearized perturbations. Our results translate directly to their dual strongly coupled non-conformal field theories.
In this review, we retrace the recent progress in the anti-de Sitter (AdS) instability problem. By instability we mean that for large classes of initial data, any perturbation of AdS space-time, however small, leads to the formation of a black hole. Since the seminal work of Bizoń and Rostworowski in 2011, many different kinds of numerical experiments were performed in asymptotically AdS space-times, unveiling a very intricate structure of the instability. In particular, many efforts were dedicated to the search of islands of stability, i.e.\ families of initial data that resist black hole for…
Here we have shown that asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (GB) theory are unstable under linear perturbations of spacetime in some region of parameters. This (eikonal) instability develops at high multipole numbers. We found the exact parametric regions of the eikonal instability and extended this consideration to asymptotically flat and de Sitter cases. The approach to the threshold of instability is driven by purely imaginary quasinormal modes, which are similar to those found recently in [5] for the higher curvature corrected black hole with the pl…
Near-extreme Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black holes are unstable against the condensation of an uncharged scalar field with mass close to the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. It is shown that a similar instability afflicts near-extreme large rotating AdS black holes, and near-extreme hyperbolic Schwarzschild-AdS black holes. The resulting nonlinear hairy black hole solutions are determined numerically. Some stability results for (possibly charged) scalar fields in black hole backgrounds are proved. For most of the extreme black holes we consider, these demonstrate stability if the ``effect…
We study the problem of a four-dimensional brane lying in the five-dimensional degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter (Nariai) black hole, in five-dimensional $F(R)$-gravity. We show that there cannot exist the brane in the Nariai bulk space except the case that the brane tension vanishes. We demonstrate that the five-dimensional Nariai bulk is unstable in a large region of the parameter space. In particular, the Nariai bulk can have classical (anti-)evaporation instabilities. The bulk instability back-reacts on the four-dimensional brane, in case that the brane tension vanishes, and the unstable …
We investigate instability of 4-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-anti-de Sitter (RN-AdS$_4$) black holes with various topologies by charged scalar field perturbations. We numerically find that the RN-AdS$_4$ black holes become unstable against the linear perturbations below a critical temperature. It is analytically shown that charge extraction from the black holes occurs during the unstable evolution. To explore the end state of the instability, we perturbatively construct static black hole solutions with the scalar hair near the critical temperature. It is numerically found that the entropy of…
We investigate the thermodynamics of a four-dimensional charged black hole in a finite cavity in asymptotically flat and asymptotically de Sitter space. In each case, we find a Hawking-Page-like phase transition between a black hole and a thermal gas very much like the known transition in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. For a ``supercooled'' black hole--a thermodynamically unstable black hole below the critical temperature for the Hawking-Page phase transition--the phase diagram has a line of first-order phase transitions that terminates in a second order point. For the asymptotically fla…
Inspired by the BTZ formalism, we discuss the Maxwell-$f(T)$ gravity in (2+1)-dimensions. The main task is to derive exact solutions for a special form of $f(T)=T+εT^2$, with $T$ being the torsion scalar of Weitzenb$\ddot{\mbox{o}}$ck geometry. To this end, a triad field is applied to the equations of motion of charged $f(T)$ and sets of circularly symmetric non-charged and charged solutions have been derived. We show that, in the charged case, the monopole-like and the ${\it ln}$ terms are linked by a correlative constant despite of known results in teleparallel geometry and its extensions [3…
We present a $D$-dimensional charged Anti-de-Sitter black hole solutions in $f(T)$ gravity, where $f(T)=T+βT^2$ and $D \geq 4$. These solutions are characterized by flat or cylindrical horizons. The interesting feature of these solutions is the existence of inseparable electric monopole and quadrupole terms in the potential which share related momenta, in contrast with most of the known charged black hole solutions in General Relativity and its extensions. Furthermore, these solutions have curvature singularities which are milder than those of the known charged black hole solutions in General …
We investigate the quantum nucleation of pairs of charged circular cosmic strings in de Sitter space. By including self-gravity we obtain the classical potential energy barrier and compute the quantum mechanical tunneling probability in the semiclassical approximation. We also discuss the classical evolution of charged circular strings after their nucleation.
We investigate static inhomogeneous charged planar black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell system in an asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. Within the framework of linear perturbations, the solutions are numerically and analytically constructed from the Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole solution. The perturbation analysis predicts that the Cauchy horizon always disappears for any wavelength perturbation, supporting the strong cosmic censorship conjecture. For extremal black holes, we analytically show that an observer freely falling into the black hole feels infinite tidal force at t…
In this paper, we study slowly rotating black hole solutions in Lovelock gravity (n=3). These exact slowly rotating black hole solutions are obtained in uncharged and charged cases, respectively. Up to the linear order of the rotating parameter a, the mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the uncharged black holes get no corrections from rotation. In charged case, we compute magnetic dipole moment and gyromagnetic ratio of the black holes. It is shown that the gyromagnetic ratio keeps invariant after introducing the Gauss-Bonnet and third order Lovelock interactions.
The effect of the spontaneous nucleation of black holes in de Sitter space is reviewed, and the main steps of the calculation in Nucl.Phys. B 582, 313, 2000 of the one-loop amplitude of this process are summarized. The existence of such an effect suggests that de Sitter space is not a ground state of quantum gravity with a positive cosmological constant.
Recent work that treats the Hawking radiation as a semi-classical tunnelling process from the four-dimensional Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom black holes is extended to the case of higher dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black holes. The result shows that the tunnelling rate is related to the change of Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and the exact radiant spectrum is no longer precisely thermal after considering the black hole background as dynamical and incorporating the self-gravitation effect of the emitted particles when the energy conservation and electric charge conservation are…
The scattering of a charged scalar field on Coulomb potential is studied using solutions of the Klein-Gordon equation which have a definite momentum. One obtains that in contrast with what happens on Minkowski case the modulus of momentum is not conserved in the scattering process on de Sitter space.
We study the stability of static as well as of rotating and charged black holes in (4+1)-dimensional Anti-de Sitter space-time which possess spherical horizon topology. We observe a non-linear instability related to the condensation of a charged, tachyonic scalar field and construct "hairy" black hole solutions of the full system of coupled Einstein, Maxwell and scalar field equations. We observe that the limiting solution for small horizon radius is either a hairy soliton solution or a singular solution that is not a regular extremal solution. Within the context of the gauge/gravity duality t…
In these lecture notes we discuss recently conjectured instability of anti-de Sitter space, resulting in gravitational collapse of a large class of arbitrarily small initial perturbations. We uncover the technical details used in the numerical study of spherically symmetric Einstein-massless scalar field system with negative cosmological constant that led to the conjectured instability.
We study scalar condensations around asymptotically Anti-de Sitter(AdS) regular reflecting shells. We show that the charged scalar field can condense around charged reflecting shells with both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, the radii of the asymptotically AdS hairy shells are discrete, which is similar to cases in asymptotically flat spacetimes. We also provide upper bounds for the radii of the hairy Dirichlet reflecting shells and above the bound, the scalar field cannot condense around the shell.
We study the instability of near extremal and extremal four-dimensional AdS charged hairy black hole to radial neutral massive and charged massless scalar field perturbations. We solve the scalar field equation by using the improved asymptotic iteration method and the time domain analysis and we find the quasinormal frequencies. For the charged scalar perturbations, we find the superradiance condition by computing the reflection coefficient in the low-frequency limit and we show that in the superradiance regime, which depends on the scalar hair charge, all modes of radial charged massless pert…
We investigate the weak cosmic censorship conjecture in extremal and near-extremal Kerr-Newman-(anti-)de Sitter black holes by the scattering of a massive scalar field with an electric charge. Under this scattering, the scalar field fluxes change the black hole state, as determined by the mass, angular momentum, and electric charge. The black hole may exceed its extremal condition because of these changes. However, we find that the black hole cannot be overcharged or overspun by the scattering. In particular, although the fluxes are closely associated with the asymptotic boundary conditions al…
Black holes possess trapping regions which lead to intriguing dynamical effects. By properly scattering test fields off a black hole, one can extract energy from it, leading to the growth of the amplitude of the test field in expense of the black hole's energy. Such a dynamical phenomenon is called superradiance. Here, we study charged-scalar-field instabilities of Reissner-Nordström black holes immersed in a $d-$dimensional de Sitter Universe. By performing a thorough frequency-domain analysis we compute the unstable quasinormal resonances and link their presence with a novel family of quasin…
In this work, we provide new examples of Anti-de Sitter black holes with a planar base manifold in four-dimensional Critical Gravity by considering nonlinear electrodynamics as a matter source. We find a general solution characterized by the presence of only one integration constant where, for a suitable election of coupling constants, we can show the existence of one or more horizons. Additionally, we compute its non-null thermodynamical quantities through a variety of techniques, testing the validity of the first law of thermodynamics as well as a Smarr formula. Finally, we analyze the local…
We study the stability of charged solitons in 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time. We show that for appropriate choices of the parameters of the model these solutions become unstable to form scalar hair. We find that the existence of charged solitons with scalar hair depends crucially on the charge and the mass of the scalar field. We investigate the dependence of the spectrum of solutions on the mass of the scalar field in detail. For positive mass of the scalar field the hairy solitons can be interpreted as charged boson stars. We find that for sufficiently small value of the charg…
From the entropy argument for the dS swampland conjecture which connects the Gibbons-Hawking entropy bound with the distance conjecture, we find the entropic quasi-dS instability time given by $1/(\sqrt{ε_H}H)\log(m_{\rm Pl}/H)$ as the lifetime of quasi-dS spacetime. It depends on the slow-roll parameter, and contains the logarithmic factor $\log(m_{\rm Pl}/H)$ which can be found in the scrambling (or decoherence) time as well. Such a logarithmic factor enhances the geodesic distance of the modulus from the mere Planck scale, and also possibly relaxes the bound on $m_{\rm Pl}^2 \nabla^2 V/V$.
We prove that charged gravitini cannot have parametrically small or vanishing Lagrangian mass in de Sitter vacua of extended supergravity while respecting the magnetic weak gravity conjecture. This places large classes of de Sitter solutions of gauged supergravity in the swampland, including all known stable solutions of the N=2 theory. We illustrate this result by analyzing a variety of de Sitter critical points of N=2 matter-coupled supergravity that also include new stable de Sitter solutions. Our results provide concrete evidence that (quasi) de Sitter with charged light gravitini should b…
