AB-stacked bilayer graphene has emerged as a fascinating yet simple platform for exploring macroscopic quantum phenomena of correlated electrons. Unexpectedly, a phase with negative dR/dT has recently been observed when a large electric displacement field is applied and the charge carrier density is tuned to the vicinity of an ultra-low-density van Hove singularity. This phase exhibits features consistent with Wigner crystallization, including a characteristic temperature dependence and non-linear current bias behavior. However, more direct evidence for the emergence of an electron crystal in AB-stacked bilayer graphene at zero magnetic field remains elusive. Here we explore the low-frequency noise consistent with depinning and sliding of a Wigner crystal lattice. The current bias and frequency dependence of these noise spectra align well with findings from previous experimental and theoretical studies on the quantum electron solids. Our results offer transport signatures consistent with Wigner crystallization in AB-stacked bilayer graphene at zero and finite magnetic fields, paving the way for further substantiating an anomalous Hall crystal in its original form.
The Wigner crystal on liquid He accompanies with periodic corrugation of the He surface; dimples. The dynamics of the crystal is coupled with the motion and the deformation of the dimples. Nonlinear phenomena found in AC Corbino conductivity are attributed to the collective sliding of the electrons out of the dimples. In order to inspect the dynamical transition to the sliding state, we have developed a novel experimental method using a so-called "t^2 pulse", whose leading and trailing edges change in proportion to the square of time; V = at^2. Since the force exerting upon the crystal is prop…
Bilayer electron-hole systems, where carriers in one layer are electrons and carriers in the other are holes, have been actively investigated in recent years with the focus on Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons. This condensation is expected to occur when the layer separation d is much smaller than the interparticle distance r_sa_B within each layer. In this Brief Report, we argue for the existence of a state, Wigner supersolid, in which excitons are phase-coherent but form a Wigner crystal due to dipolar repulsion. We present the qualitative phase diagram of a bilayer system, and discuss …
We study the possibility of Wigner crystallization in both single- and and bi-layer graphene using a real space tight binding model. In addition to verifying our earlier prediction for single layer graphene, we predict that the bilayer graphene can undergo a Wigner crystal transition at low enough carrier density thus offering a possibility of tunable and bipolar Wigner crystal. We find that aside from the Coulomb interaction of the carriers of two layers that stabilizes the charge ordered state, so does the inter layer coupling.
We study the fractional quantum Hall effect in the central Landau level of bilayer graphene. By tuning the external applied magnetic field and the electric bias between the two layers one can access a regime where there is a degeneracy between Landau levels with orbital characters corresponding to N=0 and N=1 Galilean Landau levels. While the Laughlin state is generically the ground state for filling $ν=1/3$ we find that it can be destroyed and replaced by a Wigner crystal at the same filling factor by tuning the bias and applied field. This competition does not take place at $ν=2/3$ where the…
We study the variations of electron-phonon coupling and their spectroscopic consequences in response to sliding of two layers in bilayer graphene using first-principles calculations and a model Hamiltonian. Our study shows that the long wave-length optical phonon modes change in a sensitive and unusual way depending on the symmetry as well as the parity of sliding atomic structures and that, accordingly, Raman- and infrared-active optical phonon modes behave differently upon the direction and size of the sliding. The renormalization of phonon modes by the interlayer electronic coupling is show…
The tight-binding model is closely associated with the modified layer-based random-phase approximation to thoroughly investigate the electron-electron interactions in sliding bilayer graphene. The Coulomb interactions and intralayer and interlayer atomic interactions dominate the collective and electron-hole excitations. The unusual energy bands are directly reflected in the diverse transferred momentum-frequency phase diagrams. In general, there exist two kinds of plasmon modes during the variation of the doping level in sliding bilayer graphene, being accompanied with the complicated intraba…
We demonstrate theoretically that the topology of energy bands and Fermi surface in bilayer graphene undergoes a very sensitive transition when extremely tiny lateral interlayer shift occurs in arbitrary directions. The phenomenon originates from a generation of effective non-Abelian vector potential in Dirac Hamiltonian by the sliding motions. The characteristics of the transition such as pair annihilations of massless Dirac fermions are dictated by the sliding direction owing to a unique interplay between the effective non-Abelian gauge fields and Berry's phases associated with massless elec…
We study the edge states of twisted bilayer graphene and their topological origin. We show that the twisted bilayer graphene has special edge states associated with the moiré pattern, and the emergence of these moiré edge states is linked with the sliding Chern number, which describes topological charge pumping caused by relative interlayer sliding. When one layer of the twisted bilayer is relatively slid with respect to the other layer, the edge states are transferred from a single band to another across the band gap, and the number of the edge states pumped in a sliding cycle is shown to be …
It is generally believed that a Wigner Crystal in single layer graphene can not form because the magnitudes of the Coulomb interaction and the kinetic energy scale similarly with decreasing electron density. However, this scaling argument does not hold for the low energy states in bilayer graphene. We consider the formation of a Wigner Crystal in weakly doped bilayer graphene with an energy gap opened by a perpendicular electric field. We argue that in this system the formation of the Wigner Crystal is not only possible, but different phases of the crystal with very peculiar properties may exi…
A Wigner crystal, a regular electron lattice arising from strong correlation effects, is one of the earliest predicted collective electronic states. This many-body state exhibits quantum and classical phase transitions and has been proposed as a basis for quantum information processing applications. In semiconductor platforms, two-dimensional Wigner crystals have been observed under magnetic field or moiré-based lattice potential where the electron kinetic energy is strongly suppressed. Here, we report bilayer Wigner crystal formation without a magnetic or confinement field in atomically thin …
We devise a model to explain why twisted bi-layer graphene (TBLG) exhibits insulating behavior when $ν=2,3$ charges occupy a unit moiré cell, a feature attributed to Mottness, but not for $ν=1$, clearly inconsistent with Mott insulation. We compute $r_s=E_U/E_K$, where $E_U$ and $E_K$ are the potential and kinetic energies, respectively, and show that (i) the Mott criterion lies at a density $10^4$ higher than in the experiments and (ii) a transition to a series of Wigner crystalline states exists as a function of $ν$. We find, for $ν=1$, $r_s$ fails to cross the threshold ($r_s = 37$) for the…
A mechanism for orientation of bilayer classical Wigner crystals in a piezoelectric medium is considered. For the GaAs system the piezoelectric correction to the electrostatic interaction between electrons is calculated. It is shown that taking into account the correction due to the piezoelectric effect leads to a dependence of the total energy of the electron crystal on its orientation with respect to the crystallographic axes of the surrounding matrix. A generalization of Ewald's method is obtained for calculating the anisotropic interaction between electrons in a Wigner crystal. The method …
We study a model of \textit{pinned} bilayer Wigner crystals (WC) and focus on the effects of interlayer coherence (IC) on pinning. We consider both a pseudospin ferromagnetic WC (FMWC) with IC and a pseudospin antiferromagnetic WC (AFMWC) without IC. Our central finding is that a FMWC can be pinned more strongly due to the presence of IC. One specific mechanism is through the disorder induced interlayer tunneling, which effectively manifests as an extra pinning in a FMWC. We also construct a general "effective disorder" model and effective pinning Hamiltonian for the case of FMWC and AFMWC res…
We investigate the phonon mechanism for the orientational pinning of Wigner crystals and stripes in two-dimensional electron layers in GaAs matrices. We find the orientation of bilayer Wigner crystals on the (001), (111), (0-11) and (311) interfaces versus the interlayer distance and determine the regions of parameters, where polydomain structures can emerge. For the stripe states in electron layers situated close to the (001) surface we show that the interference between the piezoelectric and deformation potential interaction may be responsible for the preferable orientation of the stripes al…
We report studies of pinning mode resonances of magnetic field induced bilayer Wigner crystals of bilayer hole samples with negligible interlayer tunneling and different interlayer separations d, in states with varying layer densities, including unequal layer densities. With unequal layer densities, samples with large d relative to the in-plane carrier-carrier spacing a, two pinning resonances are present, one for each layer. For small d/a samples, a single resonance is observed even with significant density imbalance. These samples, at balance, were shown to exhibit an enhanced pinning mode f…
We report studies of pinning mode resonances in the low total Landau filling (ν) Wigner solid of a series of bilayer hole samples with negligible interlayer tunneling, and with varying interlayer separation d. Comparison of states with equal layer densities (p,p) to single layer states (p,0) produced {in situ} by biasing, indicates that there is interlayer quantum correlation in the solid at small d. Also, the resonance frequency at small d is decreased just near ν=1/2 and 2/3, indicating the importance in the solid of correlations related to those in the fractional quantum Hall effects.
Dirac points are found to emerge due to the crossing of bands in the electronic structure of bilayer graphene for configurations in which the alignment between two hexagonal lattices preserves the parallelism of the armchair/zigzag lines between two layers. On the base of electronic calculations using a tight-binding model for the $π$ bands it is shown that the crossing of the energy-band dispersion curves occurs in the vicinity of the corner points of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. Group representation theory analysis confirms the emergence of such Dirac points. It is demonstrated that the ban…
The generalized tight-binding model, based on the subenvelope functions of distinct sublattices, is developed to investigate the magnetic quantization in sliding bilayer graphenes. The relative shift of two graphene layers induces a dramatic transformation between the Dirac-cone structure and the parabolic band structure, and thus leads to drastic changes of Landau levels (LLs) in the spatial symmetry, initial formation energy, intergroup anti-crossing, state degeneracy and semiconductor-metal transition. There exist three kinds of LLs, i.e., well-behaved, perturbed and undefined LLs, which ar…
We show that a sliding motion between the two layers of a \moire superlattice induces an electric current and realizes a two-dimensional version of the topological Thouless pump when the Fermi energy lies in one of the minigaps. Interestingly, a chiral charge pump, namely, a transverse current induced by the sliding motion, is possible in twisted homobilayers. This result is confirmed by a concrete calculation of the adiabatic current in twisted bilayer graphene. Our work reveals an interesting link between mechanical motion and electricity unique to \moire superlattices, and may find applicat…
The physics of flat band is novel and rich but difficult to access. In this regard, recently twisting of bilayer van der Waals (vdW)-bounded two-dimensional (2D) materials has attracted much attention, because the reduction of Brillouin zone will eventually lead to a diminishing kinetic energy. Alternatively, one may start with a 2D Kagome lattice, which already possesses flat bands at the Fermi level, but unfortunately these bands connect quadratically to other (dispersive) bands, leading to undesirable effects. Here, we propose, by first-principles calculation and tight-binding modeling, tha…
We report thermopower measurements of interacting GaAs bilayer hole systems. When the carrier densities in the two layers are equal, these systems exhibit a reentrant insulating phase near the quantum Hall state at total filling factor $ν=1$. Our data show that as the temperature is decreased, the thermopower diverges in the insulating phase. This behavior indicates the opening of an energy gap at low temperature, consistent with the formation of a pinned Wigner solid. We extract an energy gap and a Wigner solid melting phase diagram.
Using Diffusion Monte Carlo simulations we have investigated the ground state of a symmetric electron-hole bilayer and determined its phase diagram at T=0. We find clear evidence of an excitonic condensate, whose stability however is affected by in-layer electronic correlation. This stabilizes the electron-hole plasma at large values of the density or inter-layer distance, and the Wigner crystal at low density and large distance. We have also estimated pair correlation functions and low order density matrices, to give a microscopic characterization of correlations, as well as to try and estima…
We consider the fate of the Wigner crystal state in a two dimensional system of massive Dirac electrons as the effective fine structure constant $α$ is increased. In a Dirac system, larger $α$ naively corresponds to stronger electron-electron interactions, but it also implies a stronger interband dielectric response that effectively renormalizes the electron charge. We calculate the critical density and critical temperature associated with quantum and thermal melting of the Wigner crystal state using two independent approaches. We show that at $α\gg 1$, the Wigner crystal state is best underst…
We study the transport properties of a Wigner crystal in one- and two-dimensional asymmetric periodic potential. We show that the Aubry transition takes place above a certain critical amplitude of potential with the sliding and pinned phase below and above the transition. Due to the asymmetry the Aubry pinned phase is characterized by the diode charge transport of the Wigner crystal. We argue that the recent experimental observations of Aubry transition with cold ions and colloidal monolayers can be extended to asymmetric potentials making possible to observe Wigner crystal diode with these ph…
We study properties of Wigner crystal in snaked nanochannels and show that they are characterized by conducting sliding phase at low charge densities and insulating pinned phase emerging above a certain critical charge density. The transition between these phases has a devil's staircase structure typical for the Aubry transition in dynamical maps and the Frenkel-Kontorova model. We discuss implications of this phenomenon for charge density waves in quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors and for supercapacitors in nanopore materials.
