We investigated the effect of 0.6 MeV proton irradiation on the superconducting and normal state properties of thin-film $\text{YBa}_{2}\text{Cu}_{3}\text{O}_{7-δ}$ superconductors. A thin-film YBCO superconductor ($\approx$ 567 nm thick) was subject to a series of proton irradiations with a total fluence of $7.6\times10^{16}$ $\text{p/cm}^2$. Upon irradiation, $T_c$ was drastically decreased from 89.3 K towards zero with a corresponding increase in its normal state resistivity above $T_c$. This increase in resistivity which indicates the increase of defects inside the thin-film sample can be converted to the dimensionless scattering rate. We found that the relation between $T_c$ and dimensionless scattering rate obtained during proton irradiation approximates the generalized d-wave Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory better than the previous results obtained from electron irradiations. This is an unexpected result since the electron irradiation is known to be most effective to suppress superconductivity over other heavier ion irradiations such as proton irradiation. It suggests that the type of defects created by proton irradiation evolves from cascade defects (in bulk single crystals) to point-like defects (in thin-film single crystals) as the thickness decreases.
Multiharmonic ac-magnetic susceptibility \ch11,\chi2,chi3, of neutron irradiated Li-doped YBa2Cu3O7-x has revealed a nonmonotonic dependence of all harmonics on the neutron fluence. The irradiation has a strongly depressive influence on the intergrain connection suggesting an increase of the effective thickness of the intergranular Josephson junction at aneutron fluence of 0.98x10$^{17}$ cm$_{-2}$. Less damaged are the intragrain properties. A spectacular enhancement of the superconducting intragranular properties reflected in the characteristics of all harmonics was observed at highest fluenc…
We report on drastic change of vortex dynamics with increase of quenched disorder: for rather weak disorder we found a single vortex creep regime, which we attribute to a Bragg-glass phase, while for enhanced disorder we found an increase of both the depinning current and activation energy with magnetic field, which we attribute to entangled vortex phase. We also found that introduction of additional defects always increases the depinning current, but it increases activation energy only for elastic vortex creep, while it decreases activation energy for plastic vortex creep.
The effect of electron irradiation with the energy of 2.5 MeV on the temperature dependences of the resistivity of an optimally doped $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ single crystal has been studied. The temperature dependences of both fluctuation conductivity $σ^\prime(T)$ and the pseudogap $Δ^*(T)$ on irradiation dose $ϕ$ have been calculated within the local pair model. Here we show that with an increase in $ϕ$, the value of $ρ(300 K)$ increases linearly, while $T_c$ decreases linearly. Concurrently, the value of $ρ{100 K}$ increases nonlinearly, demonstrating a feature for $ϕ_3$ = 4.3 10$^{18}$ e/$cm^2$…
We present a new experiment on YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x} (YBCO) thin films using spatially resolved heavy ion irradiation. Structures consisting of a periodic array of strong and weak pinning channels were created with the help of metal masks. The channels formed an angle of +/-45 Deg with respect to the symmetry axis of the photolithographically patterned structures. Investigations of the anisotropic transport properties of these structures were performed. We found striking resemblance to guided vortex motion as it was observed in YBCO single crystals containing an array of unidirected twin boundaries…
We study the perpendicular transport characteristics of small superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor (YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$/LaMnO$_{3+δ}$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$) tunnel junctions. At a large bias voltage $V\sim 1$ V we observe a step-like onset of excess current that occurs below the superconducting transition temperature $T<T_c$ and is easily suppressed by a magnetic field. The phenomenon is attributed to a novel type of the superconducting proximity effect of non-equilibrium electrons injected into the conduction band of the ferromagnetic insulator via a Fowler-Nordheim tunne…
Vortex entry into (110) oriented YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ films has been studied by tunneling into Andreev - Saint-James bound states, whose energy is shifted by surface currents. At low temperatures, the characteristic field for vortex entry has been found to increase up to values several times higher than that of the Bean-Livingston entry field for conventional superconductors, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.
The angular dependence of magnetic-field commensurability effects in thin films of the cuprate high-critical-temperature superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) with an artificial pinning landscape is investigated. Columns of point defects are fabricated by two different methods of ion irradiation -- scanning the focused 30 keV ion beam in a helium ion microscope or employing the wide-field 75 keV He$^+$ beam of an ion implanter through a stencil mask. Simulations of the ion-target interactions and the resulting collision cascades reveal that with both methods square arrays of defect …
By scanning with a $30\, \mathrm{keV}$ focused He ion beam (He-FIB) across YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) thin film microbridges, we create Josephson barriers with critical current density $j_\mathrm{c}$ adjustable by irradiation dose $D$. The dependence $j_\mathrm{c} (D)$ yields an exponential decay. At $4.2\, \mathrm{K}$, a transition from flux-flow to Josephson behavior occurs when $j_\mathrm{c}$ decreases below $\approx 2\, \mathrm{MA/cm^2}$. The Josephson junctions exhibit current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) that are well described by the resistively and capacitively shunted junction model,…
Surface Umklapp scattering of quasiparticles, and surface roughness are shown to play essential roles in the formation of the surface bound states in realistic models for YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. The results account for the shape, the impurity dependence of the height, and for a proposed universal width of the zero bias conductance peak.
We have examined the effects of 20 keV electron irradiation on [-Cu(1)-O(1)-]n chain oxygen arrangements in oxygen deficient but otherwise twin-free YBa2Cu3O6+x single crystals. Comparison of polarized Raman spectra of non-irradiated and irradiated areas provides evidence that electron bombardments instigate the collective hopping of oxygen atoms either from an interstitial at O(5) site to a vacant O(1) chain site or by reshuffling the chain segments to extend the average length of chains without changing the overall oxygen content. This oxygen ordering effect, while counter-intuitive, is anal…
Point-contacts formed by the high-temperature superconductor $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ prepared by cryochemical technique, and a noble metal Ag or Cu) are investigated. The maximum value of the energy gap $Δ\simeq 40~meV$ and the ratio $2Δ/kT_c\simeq 12$ are obtained. It is found that along certain crystallographic axes of the superconductor under investigation, the electrical resistivity $\lesssim 10^{-5} Ω\cdot cm$.
We present here high precision magnetisation measurements in polycrystalline $YBa_2Cu_3O_{x}$ samples, with oxygen content ranging from $x=6.19$ to $x=7.00$. By analysing the temperature derivative of the susceptibility, we found in the underdoped superconducting samples a singular point at a temperature corresponding to $T_{mag}$, the temperature below which polarised neutrons experiments have evidenced a symmetry breaking. We believe that this is a thermodynamic indication for the existence of a phase transition in the pseudogap state of underdoped $YBa_2Cu_3O_{x}$.
We have developed a masked ion irradiation technique to engineer the energy landscape for vortices in oxide superconductors. This approach associates the possibility to design the landscape geometry at the nanoscale with the unique capability to adjust depth of the energy wells for vortices. This enabled us to unveil the key role of vortex channeling in modulating the amplitude of the field matching effects with the artificial energy landscape, and to make the latter govern flux dynamics over an usually wide range of temperatures and applied fields.
A bulk polycrystalline sample of YBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7-δ) (δ\approx 0.1) has been irradiated by γ-rays with ^{60}Co source. Non-monotonic behavior of T_{c} with increasing irradiation dose Φ(up to 220 MR) is observed: T_{c} decreases at low doses (Φ< 50 MR) from initial value (\approx 93 K) by about 2 K and then rises, forming a minimum. At higher doses (Φ> 120 MR) T_{c} goes down again. The temperature width of resistive transition increases rather sharply with dose below 75 MR and drops somewhat at higher dose. The results observed are discussed, taking into account the granular structure of sam…
In high-purity crystals of YBa_2Cu_3O_7, the quasiparticle (qp) lifetime τand the (weak-field) thermal Hall conductivity κ_{xy} undergo dramatic increases below 90K. We present a detailed picture of the behavior of κ_{xy} at low temperature, in particular its scaling properties, which are directly relevant to the issue of whether Landau quantization of the qp states occurs.
We use magnetic force microscopy to both image and manipulate individual vortex lines threading single crystalline YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.4}$, a layered superconductor. We find that when we pull the top of a pinned vortex, it may not tilt smoothly. Sometimes, we observe a vortex to break into discrete segments that can be described as short stacks of pancake vortices, similar to the "kinked" structure proposed by Benkraouda and Clem. Quantitative analysis gives an estimate of the pinning force and the coupling between the stacks. Our measurements highlight the discrete nature of stacks of pancake …
The effect of the transverse AC magnetic field on relaxation process in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ melt-textured superconductor was studied. A factor of 50 suppression of the relaxation rate could be achieved at the expense of some reduction in the maximum trapped field, with the magnetic-induction gradient being unchanged. This phenomenon is interpreted as a result of an increase of the pinning force after the action of the transverse AC magnetic field that is confirmed by the measurement of the trapped-induction distribution.
We report a temperature-dependent increase below 300 K of diffuse superlattice peaks corresponding to q_0 =(~2/5,0,0) in an under-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_6+x superconductor (x~0.63). These peaks reveal strong c-axis correlations involving the CuO_2 bilayers, show a non-uniform increase below \~220 K with a plateau for ~100-160 K, and appear to saturate in the superconducting phase. We interpret this unconventional T-dependence of the ``oxygen-ordering'' peaks as a manifestation of a charge density wave in the CuO_2 planes coupled to the oxygen-vacancy ordering.
A high-temperature YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x} bulk ceramic superconductor with composite structure has revealed weak shielding properties against gravitational force while in a levitating state at temperatures below 70 K. A toroidal disk was prepared using conventional ceramic technology in combination with melt-texture growth. Two solenoids were placed around the disk in order to initiate the current inside it and to rotate the disk about its central axis. Samples placed over the rotating disk initially demonstrated a weight loss of 0.3-0.5%. When the rotation speed was slowly reduced by changing the c…
We demonstrate that 3.5-MeV oxygen irradiation can markedly enhance the in-field critical current of commercial 2nd generation superconducting tapes with an exposure time of just one second per 0.8 cm2. The speed demonstrated here is now at the level required for an industrial reel-to-reel post-processing. The irradiation is made on production line samples through the protective silver coating and does not require any modification of the growth process. From TEM imaging, we identify small clusters as the main source of increased vortex pinning.
We apply a method based on a BCS-type approach to the extended Hubbard model to deal with the YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} superconductor family under pressure. The parameters of the tight-binding band are taken from experiments, and the coupling strength U and V are estimated from the zero pressure phase diagram Tc X n_h, where n_h is the hole content and Tc the critical temperature. With the assumption that the pressure P modifies the magnitude V of the attractive potential besides n_h, we obtain a general expansion of Tc in terms of the pressure P, as Tc(P)=Tc(n_h(P),V(P)). With this we can distinguish…
We have directly imaged the anisotropic nonlinear Meissner effect in an unconventional superconductor through the nonlinear electrodynamic response of both (bulk) gap nodes and (surface) Andreev bound states. A superconducting thin film is patterned into a compact self-resonant spiral structure, excited near resonance in the radio-frequency range, and scanned with a focused laser beam perturbation. At low temperatures, direction-dependent nonlinearities in the reactive and resistive properties of the resonator create photoresponse that maps out the directions of nodes, or of bound states assoc…
hether the node in the order parameter characteristic of a $d-wave$ superconductor can or cannot be removed by an applied magnetic field has been a subject of debate in recent years. Thermal conductivity results on the high Tc superconductor $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8}$ originally explained by Laughlin in terms of such a node removal were complicated by hysteresis effects, and judged inconclusive. We present new tunneling data on $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x}$ that support the existence of the node removal effect, under specific orientations of the sample's surfaces and magnetic field. We also explain …
The Hall resistance was measured by the van der Pauw method on $YBa_2Cu_3O_x$ samples in magnetic fields up to 5 T. In region from 0 to 0.2 T the part of the resistance due to transversal electric field, which is even in magnetic field has been observed just below the critical temperature. This part is gradually suppressed in higher field. Only the Hall resistance (due to odd transversal voltage) has been observed in magnetic field 5 T. The Hall resistance has a typical temperature dependence with negative minimum below the critical temperature. The anisotropy of the Hall resistivity has been …
Tunneling spectroscopy of epitaxial (100) oriented \chem{YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}} films was performed using an STM at 4.2 K. On atomically smooth areas, tunneling spectra revealing clear U-shaped gaps with relatively low zero bias conductance were measured. These spectra can be well fitted to the tunneling theory into a d-wave superconductor only when introducing a strong dependence of the tunneling probability on the wave-vector \emph{\textbf{k}}. Possible origins for this \emph{\textbf{k}}-selectivity in STM measurements will be discussed. On other areas, V-shaped gaps as well as zero bias conducta…
A bulk polycrystalline sample of YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ} (δ\approx 0.1) has been irradiated by γ-rays with ^{60}Co source. Non-monotonic behavior of T_c (defined as the temperature at which normal resistance is halved) with increasing irradiation dose Φ(up to about 220 MR) is observed: T_c decreases at low doses (Φ\leq 50 MR) from initial value (\approx 93 K) by about 2 K and then rises, forming minimum. At highest doses (Φ\geq 120 MR) T_c goes down again. The temperature width, δT_c, of resistive transition increases rather sharp with dose below 75 MR and somewhat drops at higher dose. We believ…
The defect-rich morphology of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) thin films leads to a glass-like arrangement of Abrikosov vortices which causes the resistance to disappear in vanishing current densities. This vortex glass consists of entangled vortex lines and is identified by a characteristic scaling of the voltage-current isotherms. Randomly distributed columnar defects stratify the vortex lines and lead to a Bose glass. Here, we report on the observation of an ordered Bose glass in a YBCO thin film with a hexagonal array of columnar defects with 30 nm spacings. The periodic pinning landscap…
To probe the quenching mechanisms under high current densities, current-voltage curves have been measured in YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin film microbridges with widths lower than the thermal diffusion length. This condition was obtained by using microbridge widths under 100 micrometers and stepped ramps of one millisecond step duration. Whereas the flux-flow resistivity is found to be microbridge-width independent, strong width dependence of the quenching current density is observed. These results provide a direct experimental demonstration that for high current densities varying in the millisecond ra…
Investigations of the resistivity and the Hall effect as a function of electric field and temperature in the normal state and upper part of the superconducting transition of an optimally doped, very thin film of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ are reported. Using a fast pulsed-current technique allowed to reduce the self-heating of the sample and to reach electric fields up to 1 kV/cm. An intrinsic non-Ohmic behavior of the Hall conductivity above the critical temperature that appears to originate from two different, partially counteracting effects is revealed. The major contribution stems from the…
The recent detection of charge-density modulations in YBa2Cu3Oy and other cuprate superconductors raises new questions about the normal state of underdoped cuprates. In one class of theories, the modulations are intertwined with pairing in a dual state, expected to persist up to high magnetic fields as a vortex liquid. In support of such a state, specific heat and magnetisation data on YBa2Cu3Oy have been interpreted in terms of a vortex liquid persisting above the vortex-melting field Hvs at T = 0. Here we report high-field measurements of the electrical and thermal Hall conductivities in YBa…
Photoexcited quasiparticle relaxation dynamics are investigated in a $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}$ superconductor as a function of doping $δ$ and temperature $T$ using ultrafast time-resolved optical spectroscopy. A model calculation is presented which describes the temperature dependence of the photoinduced quasiparticle population $n_{pe}$, photoinduced transmission $Δ{\cal T}/{\cal T}$ and relaxation time $τ$ for three different superconducting gaps: (i) a temperature-dependent collective gap such that ${\bf Δ}(T)\to 0$ as $T\to T_{c}$, (ii) a temperature-independent gap, which might arise for the…
Transport measurements in ramp-type junctions of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y-SrRuO_3-YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ with $T_c$ values of either 80-90 K or 60-70 K are reported. In both type of junctions but without a barrier ("shorts"), the supercurrent densities at 4.2 K reached 7.5 and 3.5 MA/cm$^2$, respectively, indicating the high quality of the fabrication process. Plots of the critical current versus thickness of the ferromagnetic barrier at 4.2 K show exponential decays with decay lengths of 1.1 nm for the 90 K phase and 1.4 nm for the 60 K phase, which are much shorter than the relevant coherence lengths $ξ_F\sim 5…
The temperature dependence of the real and imaginary parts of magnetic susceptibility of YBa2Cu3O7-δ superconducting thin films were researched at the electron irradiation with the energy of 2{\cdot}10<4> eV in the magnetic field of -2.4{\cdot}10<4> A/m at the temperature T=77 K. It is retrieved that the nonequilibrium distribution of atoms of oxygen, originating at the operation of an electron beam, reduces in the change of a sort of dependence of the complex magnetic susceptibility of YBa2 Cu3O7-δ thin films on the temperature T. The diffusion relaxation of a none equilibrium distribution of…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements conducted on epitaxially grown bilayers of half-metallic ferromagnetic La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 (LCMO) on superconducting (SC) (100)YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) reveal long-range penetration of superconducting order into the LCMO. This anomalous proximity effect manifests itself in the tunneling spectra measured on the LCMO layer as gaps and zero bias conductance peaks. Remarkably, these proximity-induced spectral features were observed for bilayers with LCMO thickness of up to 30 nm, an order of magnitude larger than the expected ferromagnetic coherence length in …
Thin superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ films are patterned with a vortex-pin lattice consisting of columnar defect regions (CDs) with 180 nm diameter and 300 nm spacing. They are fabricated by irradiation with 75 keV He$^+$ ions through a stencil mask. Peaks of the critical current reveal the commensurate trapping of vortices in domains near the edges of the sample. Upon ramping an external magnetic field, the positions of the critical current peaks are shifted from their equilibrium values to lower magnetic fields in virgin and to higher fields in field-saturated down-sweep curves, r…
The nonadiabatic Heisenberg model (NHM) proposed as an extension of the Heisenberg model makes a contribution to the eigenstate problem of superconductivity. The Hamiltonian H^n derived within this group-theoretical model has superconducting eigenstates if and only if the considered material possesses a narrow, roughly half-filled "superconducting" energy band of special symmetry in its band structure. This paper shows that the high-temperature superconductor YBa_2Cu_3O_7 possesses such a superconducting band. This new result together with previous observations about other superconductors and …
Cuprate superconductors still hold many open questions, in particular concerning their normal state properties, including the role of charge ordering. Nuclear magnetic resonance on $^{63,65}$Cu and $^{17}$O in the CuO$_2$ plane is a very sensitive bulk probe of charge variations, but not properly understood. Since early NMR, the oxygen satellite line splittings in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+y}$ were attributed to the orthorhombic distortion, while they could also be due to charge ordering. We employ high pressure NMR on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.9}$ hoping that charge order would respond to pressure differen…
High energy electron irradiation is an efficient way to create vacancy-interstitial Frenkel pairs in crystal lattice, thereby inducing controlled non-magnetic point - like scattering centers. In combination with London penetration depth and resistivity measurements, the irradiation was particularly useful as a phase - sensitive probe of the superconducting order parameter in iron - based superconductors lending strongest support to sign - changing $s_{\pm}$ pairing. Here we review the key results on the effect of electron irradiation in iron-based superconductors.
The cuprate superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$, in comparison with most other cuprates, has a stable stoichiometry, is largely free of defects and may be regarded as the canonical underdoped cuprate, displaying marked pseudogap behaviour and an associated distinct weakening of superconducting properties. This cuprate `pseudogap' manifests as a partial gap in the electronic density of states at the Fermi level and is observed in most spectroscopic properties. After several decades of intensive study it is widely believed that the pseudogap closes, mean-field like, near a characteristic temperatu…
We have investigated the electronic states in quasi one dimensional (1D) CuO chains by microprobe Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. We find that the quasiparticle Fermi surface consists of six disconnected segments, consistent with recent theoretical calculations that predict the formation of narrow, elongated Fermi surface pockets for coupled CuO chains. In addition, we find a strong renormalization effect with a significant kink structure in the band dispersion. The properties of this latter effect [energy scale (~40 meV), temperature dependence and behavior with Zn-doping] are iden…
Magnetic fields penetrate a type-II superconductor as magnetic flux quanta, called vortices. In a clean superconductor they arrange in a hexagonal lattice, while by adding periodic artificial pinning centers many other arrangements can be realized. Using the focused beam of a helium ion microscope we have fabricated periodic patterns of dense pinning centers with spacings as small as 70 nm in thin films of the cuprate superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$. In these ultradense kagomé-like patterns, the voids lead to magnetic caging of vortices, resulting in unconventional commensurability e…
The confrontation between the superconducting fluctuations and percolation effects as the origin of the in-plane paraconductivity in cuprate superconductors was earlier addressed at a quantitative level in the case of the optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) compound. Using in-plane resistivity data from a high-quality YBCO thin film, we will extend these analyses to high reduced temperatures, in the case of the Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) approach for the conventional superconducting fluctuations, by considering the total energy cutoff. These data will also be analysed in terms of…
We present a study of reentrant behavior in a composite formed by a Hight-T$ _{c} $ superconductor, YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$ _{7-δ}$ and Ammonium Terbium Oxalate, Tb(H$_2$O)(C$ _2$O$_4$)$_2$ $\cdot $NH$_4$. The composite has a transition temperature about 92 K, and it presents a reentrant behaviour resulting of the coexistence between superconductivity and magnetism. According to this study the values and shape of the critical magnetic fields were dramatically reduced in a similar form as in other known reentrant superconductors.
YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ coated conductors (CCs) have achieved high critical current densities ($\textit{J}_{c}$) that can be further increased through the introduction of additional defects using particle irradiation. However, these gains are accompanied by increases in the flux creep rate, a manifestation of competition between the different types of defects. Here, we study this competition to better understand how to design pinning landscapes that simultaneously increase $\textit{J}_{c}$ and reduce creep. CCs grown by metal organic deposition show non-monotonic changes in the temperature-…
We report on the effect of agglomeration forced by strong electric field in fine particles of nearly ferroelectric YBa2Cu3O7-d superconductor. It turns out that the particles from agglomerates exhibit different morphology than the rest of powder that attaches to high-voltage electrodes. Study by means of electron paramagnetic resonance revealed in the powder attached to electrodes a narrow spectrum superimposed on Cu2+ anisotropic spectrum common for YBa2Cu3O7-d superconductors. We assume that this narrow spectrum originates from nanopolar regions generated by strong electric discharges taking…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of thin epitaxial $SrRuO_{3}/(110)YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ ferromagnet/superconductor bilayers, reveal a clear penetration of the Andreev bound states into the ferromagnetic layer. The penetration is manifested in the density of states of the ferromagnet as a split zero bias conductance peak with an imbalance between peak heights. Our data indicate that the splitting occurs at the superconductor side as a consequence of induced magnetization, confirming recent theoretical predictions. The imbalance is attributed to the spin polarization in the ferromagnet.
Experimental results of I-V characteristics near the superconductor-insulator transition observed for disorder-tuned YBaCuO thinfilms are presented. The I-V characteristics exibit new quasiperiodic structures as a function of the current. The current interval, the number of the dI/dV peaks, and the magnetic field dependence of the peaks are consistent with the theoretical predictions of the resonant tunneling of a phase particle ina tilted-cosine potential for asingle Josephson junction with small capacitance.
We present harmonic generation measurements of the intrinsic nonlinear current density $j_2$ of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films at temperatures close the $T_c$. Experiments on a range of different quality samples allow us to extract the dependence of $j_2$ on the penetration depth of the superconductor. In order to model these results, we calculate the intrinsic nonlinear current response of $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductors in the Meissner regime in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities within the self-consistent T-matrix approximation.
We irradiate the heavy fermion superconductors (U,Th)Be_13 with high-energy heavy ions. Damage from the ions affects both heat capacity and magnetization measurements, although much less dramatically than in other superconductors. From these data and from direct imaging, we conclude that the irradiation does not create the amorphous columnar defects observed in high-temperature superconductors and other materials. We also find that the damage suppresses the two superconducting transitions of U_0.97Th_0.03Be_13 by comparable amounts, unlike their response to other types of defects.
Experiments on the irradiation-induced suppression of the critical temperature in high-Tc superconductors are analyzed within the mean-field Abrikosov-Gor'kov-like approach. It is shown that the experimental data for YBa2Cu3O7 single crystals can be quantitatively explained by the pair breaking effects under the assumption of the combined effect of potential and spin-flip scattering on the critical temperature and with account for a non-pure d-wave superconducting order parameter.
Temperature-dependent London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, of a high quality optimally-doped $\text{YBa}_{2}\text{Cu}_{3}\text{O}_{7-δ}$ single crystal was measured using tunnel-diode resonator. Controlled artificial disorder was induced at low-temperature of 20~K by 2.5 MeV electron irradiation at accumulating large doses of $3.8\times10^{19}$ and $5.3\times10^{19}$ electrons per $\textrm{cm}^{2}$. The irradiation caused significant suppression of the superconductor's critical temperature, $T_{c}$, from 94.6 K to 90.0 K, and then to 78.7 K, respectively. The low-temperature behavior of $λ\left(T…
The existence of coherent magnetic correlations in the normal phase of cuprate high-temperature superconductors has proven difficult to measure directly. Here we report on a study of ferromagnetic-superconductor bilayers of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7 (LCMO/YBCO) with varying YBCO layer thicknesses. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we demonstrate that the ferromagnetic layer induces a Cu magnetic moment in the adjacent high-temperature superconductor. For thin samples, this moment exists at all temperatures below the Curie temperature of the LCMO layer. However, for a YBCO layer thicker t…
The importance of charge reservoir layers for supplying holes to the CuO$_2$ planes of cuprate superconductors has long been recognized. Less attention has been paid to the screening of the charge transfer by the intervening ionic layers. We address this issue in the case of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, where CuO chains supply the holes for the planes. We present a simple dielectric-screening model that gives a linear correlation between the relative displacements of ions along the $c$ axis, determined by neutron powder diffraction, and the hole density of the planes. Applying this model to the tem…
A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the high temperature superconductor $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.85}$ provides evidence of new resonant magnetic features, in addition to the well known resonant mode at 41 meV: (i) a commensurate magnetic resonance peak at 53 meV with an even symmetry under exchange of two adjacent $\rm CuO_2$ layers; and (ii) high energy incommensurate resonant spin excitations whose spectral weight is around 54 meV. The locus and the spectral weight of these modes can be understood by considering the momentum shape of the electron-hole spin-flip continuum of d-wave sup…
We have measured an angle-dependent contribution to the equilibrium magnetization of a YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-d} single crystal with columnar defects created by 5.8GeV Pb ions. This contribution manifests itself as a jump in the equilibrium torque signal, when the magnetic field crosses that of the defects. The magnitude of the signal, which is observed in a narrow temperature interval less than 2K and for fields up to about twice the irradiation field, is used to estimate the the energy gained by vortex pinning on the defects. The vanishing of the effective pinning energy at a temperature below Tc is …
We report results of microwave second-harmonic generation in ceramic samples of MgB2, prepared by different methods. The SH signal has been investigated as a function of the temperature and the static magnetic field. The results are discussed in the framework of models reported in the literature. We show that the peculiarities of the SH signal are related to the specific properties of the sample. A comparison with the results obtained in ceramic and crystalline YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) shows that the second-harmonic emission in MgB2 is weaker than that observed in ceramic YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7).
Neutron scattering has been used to study the spin fluctuations in the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ materials. Evidence is found for both incommensurate fluctuations and a commensurate resonance excitation. Measurements on the lattice dynamics for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ show incommensurate structure that appears to stem from charge fluctuations that are associated with the spin fluctuations.
Polarized beam neutron scattering measurements on a highly perfect crystal of ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}}$ show a distinct magnetic transition with an onset at about 235K, the temperature expected for the pseudogap transition. The moment is found to be about 0.1 $μ_B$ for each sublattice and have a correlation length of at least 75 Å. We found the critical exponent for the magnetic neutron intensity to be 2$β$ =0.37$\pm$ 0.12. This is the proper range for the class of transition that has no specific heat divergence possibly explaining why none is found at the pseudogap transition.
