We present here high precision magnetisation measurements in polycrystalline $YBa_2Cu_3O_{x}$ samples, with oxygen content ranging from $x=6.19$ to $x=7.00$. By analysing the temperature derivative of the susceptibility, we found in the underdoped superconducting samples a singular point at a temperature corresponding to $T_{mag}$, the temperature below which polarised neutrons experiments have evidenced a symmetry breaking. We believe that this is a thermodynamic indication for the existence of a phase transition in the pseudogap state of underdoped $YBa_2Cu_3O_{x}$.
The thermodynamics of the superconducting transition is studied as a function of doping using high-resolution expansivity data of YBa2Cu3Ox single crystals and Monte-Carlo simulations of the anisotropic 3D-XY model. We directly show that Tc of underdoped YBa2Cu3Ox is strongly suppressed from its mean-field value (Tc-MF) by phase fluctuations of the superconducting order parameter. For overdoped YBa2Cu3Ox fluctuation effects are greatly reduced and Tc ~ Tc-MF . We find that Tc-MF exhibits a similar doping dependence as the pseudogap energy, naturally suggesting that the pseudogap arises from ph…
In underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x (YBCO) with x = 6.63, the opening of the pseudogap at T^* ~ 160 K has a strong effect on the Hall angle tan(theta). While the Hall response is significantly reduced, the diagonal current is relatively unaffected. The Hall conductivity suppression continues deep into the flux-flow state (from T_c to 40 K), as an anomalous suppression of the vortex Hall current.
Unpolarized inelastic neutron scattering is used to study the temperature and wave vector dependence of the dynamical magnetic susceptibility, $χ''(q,ω)$, of a well characterized single crystal $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}$ ($T_c=62.7$ K). We find that a pseudogap opens in the spin fluctuation spectrum at temperatures well above $T_c$. We speculate that the appearance of the low frequency incommensurate fluctuations is associated with the opening of the pseudogap. To within the error of the measurements, a gap in the spin fluctuation spectrum is found in the superconducting state.
We reply to the objections raised in a recent Comment (arXiv:1706.03023) regarding our observation of slow magnetic fluctuations and critical slowing down of magnetic fluctuations in the pseudogap phase of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ by zero-field and longitudinal-field muon spin relaxation (arXiv:1703.06799).
To address the issue of the pseudogap in the superconducting state of the high temperature superconducting cuprates, we studied the temperature dependent redistribution of the spectral weight in the \textit{c}-axis polarized optical spectra for underdoped YBa$_{2}$(Cu$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals with $x=0,0.007,$ 0.012, and 0.04. It was found that for Zn substituted samples, the spectral weight transfer to the high energy region, which characterizes the pseudogap state, continues even below the superconducting transition temperature (\textit{T}$_{c}$), indicating the coexis…
We present muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements on a large YBa2Cu3O6.6 single crystal in which two kinds of unusual magnetic order have been detected in the pseudogap region by neutron scattering. A comparison is made to measurements on smaller, higher quality YBa2Cu3Oy single crystals. One type of magnetic order is observed in all samples, but does not evolve significantly with hole doping. A second type of unusual magnetic order is observed only in the YBa2Cu3O6.6 single crystal. This magnetism has an ordered magnetic moment that is quantitatively consistent with the neutron experiments,…
We report the result of our accurate measurements of the a- and b-axis resistivity, Hall coefficient, and the a-axis thermopower in untwinned YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} single crystals in a wide range of doping. It is found that both the a-axis resistivity and the Hall conductivity show anomalous dependences on the oxygen content y in the "60-K phase" below the pseudogap temperature T^*. The complete data set enables us to narrow down the possible pictures of the 60-K phase, with which we discuss a peculiar role of the pseudogap in the charge transport.
A recent zero-field (ZF) and longitudinal-field (LF) muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) study of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ [Jian~Zhang {\it et al.}, arXiv:1709.06799] claims to have detected critical slowing down of magnetic fluctuations near the pseudogap temperature $T^*$, and attribute this to the onset of slow fluctuating domains of intra-unit-cell magnetic order. Here it is argued that the relaxation data displayed in this study are misleading due to an improper account of the nuclear dipole contribution and a failure to acknowledge the occurrence of muon diffusion.
Clear experimental evidence of charge density wave correlations competing with superconducting order in YBCO have thrust their relationship with the pseudogap regime into the spotlight. To aid in characterizing the pseudogap regime, we propose a dimensionless ratio of the diamagnetic susceptibility to the correlation length of the charge density wave correlations. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we compute this ratio on the classical model of Hayward et. al. (Science 343, 1336 (2014)), which describes angular fluctuations of a multicomponent order, capturing both superconducting and density wav…
The temperature dependences of g factors of underdoped YBa2Cu3O7-x (Tc approximates 86.5K) indicate that the pseudogap onset temperature T*( approximates 190 K) coincides with the phase boundary established by resistivity, Nernst effect, neutron diffraction and ultrasound measurements in YBCO phase diagram. The obtained empirical relationship between g factors and pseudogap is appropriate for the entire charactering temperature range of Ortho-III YBCO. The EPR signals are ascribed to the localized Cu2+(1) sites based on the quantitative calculations of the g factors by involving the local stru…
The real part of the in-plane optical self-energy data in underdoped Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) and ortho II YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.5}$ contains new and important information on the pseudogap. Using a theoretical model approach we find that the density of state lost below the pseudogap $Δ_{pg}$ is accompanied with a pileup just above this energy. The pileup along with a sharp mode in the bosonic spectral function leads to an unusually rapid increase in the optical scattering rate and a characteristically sloped peak in the real part of the optical self-energy. These features…
Polar Kerr effect in the high-Tc superconductor \YBCO was measured at zero magnetic field with high precision using a cyogenic Sagnac fiber interferometer. We observed non-zero Kerr rotations of order $\sim 1 μ$rad appearing near the pseudogap temperature $T^*$, and marking what appears to be a true phase transition. Anomalous magnetic behavior in magnetic-field training of the effect suggests that time reversal symmetry is already broken above room temperature.
An unusual noise component is found near and below about 250 K in the normal state of underdoped YBCO and Ca-YBCO films. This noise regime, unlike the more typical noise above 250 K, has features expected for a symmetry-breaking collective electronic state. These include large individual fluctuators, a magnetic sensitivity, and aging effects. A possible interpretation in terms of fluctuating charge nematic order is presented.
We discuss a recent resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) study of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$, which infers a line of phase transitions bounding the pseudogap phase and argue that this scenario is not supported by thermodynamic evidence. We show that the anomalies in RUS, heat capacity and thermal expansion at the superconducting transition temperatures agree well. But there are large discrepancies between RUS and thermodynamic measurements at $T^*$ where the pseudogap phase transitions are purported to occur. Moreover, the frequency and temperature dependence of the RUS data for the crystal with…
The investigation of the penetration depth λ_{ab}(T,p) in YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x} crystals allowed to observe the following features of the superfluid density n_s(T,p)\propto λ_{ab}^{-2}(T,p) as a function of temperature T<Tc/2 and carrier concentration 0.078\le p\le 0.16 in CuO_2 planes: (i) n_s(0,p) depends linearly on p, (ii) the derivative |dn_s(T,p)/dT|_{T\to 0} depends on p slightly in the optimally and moderately doped regions (0.10<p\le 0.16); however, it rapidly increases with p further lowering and (iii) the latter finding is accompanied by the linear low-temperature dependence [-Δn_s(T)]\p…
Understanding high-temperature superconductivity requires a prior knowledge of the nature of the enigmatic pseudogap metallic state, out of which the superconducting state condenses. In addition to the electronic orders involving charge degrees of freedoms recently reported inside the pseudogap state, a magnetic intra-unit-cell (IUC) order was discovered in various cuprates to set in just at the pseudogap temperature, T*. In nearly optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.85}$, polarized neutron scattering measurements, carried out on two different spectrometers, reveal new features. The order is ma…
Our knowledge of the ground state of underdoped hole-doped cuprates has evolved considerably over the last few years. There is now compelling evidence that inside the pseudogap phase, charge order breaks translational symmetry leading to a reconstructed Fermi surface made of small pockets. Quantum oscillations, [Doiron-Leyraud N, et al. (2007) Nature 447:564-568], optical conductivity [Mirzaei SI, et al. (2013) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 110:5774-5778] and the validity of Wiedemann-Franz law [Grissonnache G, et al. (2016) Phys. Rev. B 93:064513] point to a Fermi liquid regime at low temperature in…
The cuprate superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$, in comparison with most other cuprates, has a stable stoichiometry, is largely free of defects and may be regarded as the canonical underdoped cuprate, displaying marked pseudogap behaviour and an associated distinct weakening of superconducting properties. This cuprate `pseudogap' manifests as a partial gap in the electronic density of states at the Fermi level and is observed in most spectroscopic properties. After several decades of intensive study it is widely believed that the pseudogap closes, mean-field like, near a characteristic temperatu…
Femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy is applied to identify transient optical signatures of phase transitions in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-δ films. To elucidate the dynamics of superconducting and pseudogap phases, the slow thermal component is removed from the time-domain traces of photo-induced reflectivity in a high-flux regime with low frequency pulse rate. The rescaled data exhibit distinct signatures of the phase separation with abrupt changes at the onsets of TSC and TPG in excellent agreement with transport data. Compared to the superconducting phase, the response of the pseudogap phase…
In present work the conductivity in the basis plane of YBaCuO single crystals slightly doped by Al and Pr with a pre-specified topology of twin boundaries has been investigated. The excess conductivity for the analyzed samples shows dependence like $Δσ\sim(1-T/T^*)\exp(Δ_{ab}^*/T)$ in wide temperature range $T_f<T<T^*$, where $T^*$ can be represents as mean field temperature of superconducting transition. The temperature dependence of pseudogap can be satisfactory described in terms of the BCS-BEC crossover theoretical model.
Conductivity due to superconducting fluctuations studied in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-d films displays a stronger decay law in temperature than explainable by theory. A formula is proposed, which fits the data very well with two superconductive parameters, Tc and the coherence length ksi_c0, and an energy scale Delta*. This is also valid in underdoped materials and enables to describe the conductivity up to 300 K with a single-particle excitations channel in parallel with a channel whose contribution is controlled by ksi_c0, Tc and Delta*. This allows to address the nature of the pseudogap in …
We report results of a muon spin relaxation study of slow magnetic fluctuations in the pseudogap phase of underdoped single-crystalline YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$, $y = 6.77$ and 6.83. The dependence of the dynamic muon spin relaxation rate on applied magnetic field yields the rms magnitude~$B\mathrm{_{loc}^{rms}}$ and correlation time~$τ_c$ of fluctuating local fields at muon sites. The observed relaxation rates do not decrease with decreasing temperature~$T$ below the pseudogap onset at $T^\ast$, as would be expected for a conventional magnetic transition; both $B\mathrm{_{loc}^{rms}}$ and $τ_…
We report $^{17}$O(2,3) and $^{63}$Cu(2) spin-lattice relaxation rates and the $^{17}$O(2,3) spin-spin relaxation rate in different magnetic fields in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ near $T_c$. Together these measurements enable us to test the magnetic field dependence of the pseudogap effect on the spin susceptibility in different regions of the Brillouin zone using the known form factors for different nuclei as filters. Thus, we study the momentum dispersion of the pseudogap behavior. We find that near the antiferromagnetic wave vector the pseudogap is insensitive to magnetic fields up to 15 T. In the r…
The hypothesis regarding the existence of uncorrelated pre-formed pairs in the pseudogap regime of superconducting $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ is tested experimentally using bilayers of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ and the itinerant ferromagnet $SrRuO_3$. In our study, we monitor the influence of $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ on $T_p$, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature of $SrRuO_3$. Here, $T_p$ is the temperature of maximum dM/dT or dR/dT where M and R are the magnetization and resistance of $SrRuO_3$, respectively. We compare the results with similar measurements carried out on bilayers of $La_{1.88}Sr_{0.12}CuO_{4-y}$, $Au$ and…
The effect of electron irradiation with the energy of 2.5 MeV on the temperature dependences of the resistivity of an optimally doped $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ single crystal has been studied. The temperature dependences of both fluctuation conductivity $σ^\prime(T)$ and the pseudogap $Δ^*(T)$ on irradiation dose $ϕ$ have been calculated within the local pair model. Here we show that with an increase in $ϕ$, the value of $ρ(300 K)$ increases linearly, while $T_c$ decreases linearly. Concurrently, the value of $ρ{100 K}$ increases nonlinearly, demonstrating a feature for $ϕ_3$ = 4.3 10$^{18}$ e/$cm^2$…
The influence of hydrostatic pressure up to P=1.05 GPa on resistivity R, excess conductivity $σ'(T)$ and pseudogap $Δ*(T)$ is studied in slightly doped single crystals of YBa2Cu3O7-$δ (Tc=49.2 K, δ~ 0.5)$. The critical temperature Tc is found to increase with increasing pressure at a rate dTc/dP = 5.1 K/GPa, while R(300)K decreases at a rate d(ln R)/dP = 0.19% 1/GPa. Near Tc, independently on pressure, the $σ'(T)$ is well described by the Aslamasov-Larkin and Hikami-Larkin fluctuation theories, demonstrating a 3D-2D crossover with increase of temperature. The crossover temperature To determine…
Evidence for intra-unit-cell (IUC) magnetic order in the pseudogap region of high-$T_c$ cuprates below a temperature $T^\ast$ is found in several studies, but NMR and $μ$SR experiments do not observe the expected static local magnetic fields. It has been noted, however, that such fields could be averaged by fluctuations. Our measurements of muon spin relaxation rates in single crystals of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ reveal magnetic fluctuations of the expected order of magnitude that exhibit critical slowing down at $T^\ast$. These results are strong evidence for fluctuating IUC magnetic order in the p…
The in-plane and out-of-plane surface impedance and microwave conductivity components of one and the same YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x} (0.07\le x\le 0.47) single crystal are determined in the wide ranges of temperature T and carrier concentration p in CuO_2 planes. The following features of the superfluid density n_s(T,p)\proptoλ_{ab}^{-2}(T,p) are observed at T<Tc/2 and 0.078\le p\le 0.16: (i) n_s(0,p) depends linearly on p, (ii) the derivative |dn_s(T,p)/dT|_{T\to 0} depends on p slightly in the optimally and moderately doped regions (0.10<p\le 0.16); however, it rapidly increases with p further lowerin…
The pseudogap (PG) derived from the analysis of the excess conductivity $σ'(T)$ in superlattices and double-layer films of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$-$PrBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$(YBCO-PrBCO), prepared by pulsed laser deposition, is studied for the first time. The $σ'(T)$ analysis has been performed within the local-pair (LP) model based on the assumption of the paired fermion (LPs) formation in the cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors (cuprates) below the representative temperature $T^*\gg T_c$ resulting in the PG opening. Within the model, the temperature dependencies of the PG, $Δ^*(T)$, for the samples with d…
We investigate the electron-boson spectral density function, $I^2χ(ω,T)$, of CuO$_2$ plane in underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) and underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ (Y-123) using the Eliashberg formalism. We apply a new (in-plane) pseudogap model to extract the electron-boson spectral function. For extracting the spectral function we assume that the spectral density function consists of two components: a sharp mode and the broad Millis-Monien-Pines (MMP) mode. We observe that both the resulting spectral density function and the intensity of the pseudogap show strong temperat…
This study focuses on the temperature and hole content dependent fluctuation diamagnetism of hole doped YBa2Cu3O7-delta (Y123) high-Tc superconductors. Two different compositions of Y123 have been considered with in-plane hole content (p): 0.161 (optimally doped) and 0.143 (underdoped). The fluctuation induced excess diamagnetic susceptibility, Delta_chi(T), has been investigated via the mean-field Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau (MFGGL) formalism with and without a total energy cut-off in the fluctuating modes. It has been found that inclusion of total energy cut-off describes the Delta_chi(T) data …
The temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient is measured with a high accuracy in a series of Zn-doped YBCO_{6.78} crystals with the Zn concentration from 0% to 1.3%. We found that the cotangent of the Hall angle, cot(θ_H), starts to deviate upward from the T^2 dependence below T_0 (which is roughly 130 K), regardless of the Zn concentration. We discuss that this deviation is caused by the pseudogap; the direction of the deviation and its insensitivity to the Zn doping suggest that the pseudogap affects cot(θ_H) through a change in the effective mass, rather than through a change in the H…
The phase diagram of cuprate high-temperature superconductors features an enigmatic pseudogap region that is characterized by a partial suppression of low energy electronic excitations. Polarized neutron diffraction, Nernst effect, THz polarimetery and ultrasound measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ suggest that the pseudogap onset below a temperature T* coincides with a bona fide thermodynamic phase transition that breaks time-reversal, four-fold rotation and mirror symmetries respectively. However, the full point group above and below T* has not been resolved and the fate of this transition as…
Understanding the nature of the mysterious pseudogap phenomenon is one of the most important issues associated with cuprate high-$T_c$ superconductors. Here, we report $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies on two planar oxygen sites in stoichiometric cuprate YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ to investigate the symmetry breaking inside the pseudogap phase. We observe that the Knight shifts of the two oxygen sites are identical at high temperatures but different below $T_{\rm nem} \sim$ 185 K, which is close to the pseudogap temperature $T^{\ast}$. Our result provides a microscopic evidence for int…
For orthorhombic superconductors we define thermodynamic anisotropy $N \equiv d T_c/d ε_{22} - dT_c/d ε_{11}$ as the difference in how superconducting $T_c$ varies with strains $ε_{ii}$, $i=(1, 2)$, along the in-plane directions. We study the hole doping ($p$) dependence of $N$ on detwinned single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO) using ultrasound technique. While the structural orthorhombicity of YBCO reduces monotonically with decreasing doping over $0.065 <p<0.16$, we find that the thermodynamic anisotropy shows an intriguing enhancement at intermediate doping level, which is…
We reanalyze the data on the in-plane far infrared conductivity of underdoped orthoII YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.50}$ (YBCO$_{6.50}$) in terms of a model in which a pseudogap opens on part of the Fermi surface with the remaining ungaped piece proportional to the temperature. The motivation for our model comes from recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data in underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212), which have revealed the existence of arcs on the Fermi surface. We find the optical data to be consistent with arc formation. In addition we find some evidence that the electronic…
We study the perpendicular transport characteristics of small superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/superconductor (YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$/LaMnO$_{3+δ}$/YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$) tunnel junctions. At a large bias voltage $V\sim 1$ V we observe a step-like onset of excess current that occurs below the superconducting transition temperature $T<T_c$ and is easily suppressed by a magnetic field. The phenomenon is attributed to a novel type of the superconducting proximity effect of non-equilibrium electrons injected into the conduction band of the ferromagnetic insulator via a Fowler-Nordheim tunne…
A new NMR anvil cell design is used for measuring the influence of high pressure on the electronic properties of the high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ above the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. It is found that pressure increases the spin shift at all temperatures in such a way that the pseudo-gap feature has almost disappeared at 63 kbar. This change of the temperature dependent spin susceptibility can be explained by a pressure induced proportional decrease (factor of two) of a temperature dependent component, and an increase (factor of 9) of a temperature…
A central issue in the quest to understand the superconductivity in cuprates is the nature and origin of the pseudogap state, which harbours anomalous electronic states such as Fermi arc, charge density wave (CDW), and $d$-wave superconductivity. A fundamentally important, but long-standing controversial problem has been whether the pseudogap state is a distinct thermodynamic phase characterized by broken symmetries below the onset temperature $T^*$. Electronic nematicity, a fourfold ($C_4$) rotational symmetry breaking, has emerged as a key feature inside the pseudogap regime, but the presenc…
Vortex entry into (110) oriented YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ films has been studied by tunneling into Andreev - Saint-James bound states, whose energy is shifted by surface currents. At low temperatures, the characteristic field for vortex entry has been found to increase up to values several times higher than that of the Bean-Livingston entry field for conventional superconductors, in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.
Original definition of the pseudogap [11,12] allowes to connect it conceptually with a topological insulator. It concerns the multiband superconductivity background with variable chemical potential position.
The magnetic spectrum at high-energies in heavily underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.35}$ (T$_{c}$=18 K) has been determined throughout the Brillouin zone. At low-energy the scattering forms a cone of spin excitations emanating from the antiferromagnetic (0.5, 0.5) wave vector with an acoustic velocity similar to that of insulating cuprates. At high energy transfers, below the maximum energy of 270 meV at (0.5, 0), we observe zone boundary dispersion much larger and spectral weight loss more extensive than in insulating antiferromagnets. Moreover we report phenomena not found in insulators, an …
Surface Umklapp scattering of quasiparticles, and surface roughness are shown to play essential roles in the formation of the surface bound states in realistic models for YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. The results account for the shape, the impurity dependence of the height, and for a proposed universal width of the zero bias conductance peak.
In hole-doped cuprates there is now compelling evidence that inside the pseudogap phase, charge order breaks translational symmetry leading to a reconstruction of the Fermi surface. In $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ charge order emerges in two steps: a 2D order found at zero field and at high temperature inside the pseudogap phase, and a 3D order that is superimposed below the superconducting transition $T_c$ when superconductivity is weakened by a magnetic field. Several issues still need to be addressed such as the effect of disorder, the relationship between those charge orders and their respective impact …
We present an experimental review of the nature of the pseudogap in the cuprate superconductors. Evidence from various experimental techniques points to a common phenomenology. The pseudogap is seen in all high temperature superconductors and there is general agreement on the temperature and doping range where it exists. It is also becoming clear that the superconducting gap emerges from the normal state pseudogap. The d-wave nature of the order parameter holds for both the superconducting gap and the pseudogap. Although an extensive body of evidence is reviewed, a consensus on the origin of t…
The spin dynamics of an optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7 (Tc = 93 K) crystal array have been investigated in a wide range of momentum and energy (Q - E) space using the time-of-flight neutron scattering method. Incommensurate spin modulation in Q is a characteristic feature, as it is in the under-doped YBa2Cu3O6.7 with a different incommensurability. A linear relationship between the incommensurability and Tc is proposed. Along with the discovery of the same incommensurability in under-doped La2-ySryCuO4, it may be a generic characteristic of the high-Tc oxide superconductor.
We show by means of the theory of the order parameter phase fluctuations that the temperature of "closing" (or "opening") of the gap (and pseudogap) in the electron spectra of superconductors with anisotropic order parameter takes place within a finite temperature range. Every Fourier-component of the order parameter has its own critical temperature.
Point-contacts formed by the high-temperature superconductor $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ prepared by cryochemical technique, and a noble metal Ag or Cu) are investigated. The maximum value of the energy gap $Δ\simeq 40~meV$ and the ratio $2Δ/kT_c\simeq 12$ are obtained. It is found that along certain crystallographic axes of the superconductor under investigation, the electrical resistivity $\lesssim 10^{-5} Ω\cdot cm$.
The influence of the hydrostatic pressure P up to 0.95 GPa on the excess conductivity and the pseudogap Δ*(T) in optimally doped YBCO single crystals (T_c = 91.1K at ambient pressure) is investigated by electrical resistivity measurements. A pronounced enhancement of the pseudogap under pressure of dlnΔ*/dP= 0.32, which is only a factor of 1.12 smaller than in slightly doped single crystals, is revealed for the first time. This implies a somewhat more moderate increase of the coupling strength in optimally doped cuprates with increasing pressure. Simultaneously, the ratio 2Δ*(T_c)/k_BT_c=5 at …
Abrikosov-Gor'kov (AG) theory, the foundation for understanding pair-breaking effects in conventional superconductors, is inadequate when there is an excitation gap (pseudogap) present at the onset of superconductivity. In this paper we present an extension of AG theory within two important, and diametrically opposite approaches to the cuprate pseudogap. The effects of impurities on the pseudogap onset temperature T* and on Tc, along with comparisons to experiment are addressed.
We report measurements of the ab-plane superfluid density Ns (magnetic penetration depth, λ) of severely underdoped films of YBa2Cu3O6+x, with Tc's from 6 to 50 K. Tc is not proportional to Ns(0); instead, we find Tc ~ Ns^{1/2.3 +/- 0.4}. At the lowest dopings, Tc is as much as 5 times larger than the upper limit set by the KTB transition temperature of individual CuO2 bilayers.
We develop a theory of ultrasound decay rate $α$ in a model of a superconductor with a large pseudogap $Δ_P$, and show that at low temperatures ($T \ll T_c$) the magnitude of the decay rate $α$ is controlled by the ratio of $T/Δ$, where $Δ\ll Δ_P$ is a superconducting collective gap. Thus we propose new method to measure the collective gap $Δ$ in a situation when strong pseudogap is present.
In high-purity crystals of YBa_2Cu_3O_7, the quasiparticle (qp) lifetime τand the (weak-field) thermal Hall conductivity κ_{xy} undergo dramatic increases below 90K. We present a detailed picture of the behavior of κ_{xy} at low temperature, in particular its scaling properties, which are directly relevant to the issue of whether Landau quantization of the qp states occurs.
Femtosecond pump probe experiments are reported on quasiparticle relaxation and recombination in YBa2Cu4O8 as a function of temperature and polarization. The data show a 2-component relaxation similar to YBa2Cu3O7-δ, one component being assocated with the superconducting transition, and the other with the pseudogap below T* The relaxation time tau_p associated with the pseudogap is found to be T-independent, while the relaxation time tau_g of the component obseved only below Tc exhibits a clear divergence near Tc. A strong polarisation anisotropy of the picosecond transient is observed below T…
In the framework of the model assuming the formation of NUC on the pairs of Cu ions in CuO$_{2}$ plane the mechanism of hole carrier generation is considered and the interpretation of pseudogap and 60 K-phases in $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+δ}$. is offered. The calculated dependences of hole concentration in $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+δ}$ on doping $δ$ and temperature are found to be in a perfect quantitative agreement with experimental data. As follows from the model the pseudogap has superconducting nature and arises at temperature $T^{*}>T_{c\infty}>T_{c}$ in small clusters uniting a number of NUC's due to …
We use magnetic force microscopy to both image and manipulate individual vortex lines threading single crystalline YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.4}$, a layered superconductor. We find that when we pull the top of a pinned vortex, it may not tilt smoothly. Sometimes, we observe a vortex to break into discrete segments that can be described as short stacks of pancake vortices, similar to the "kinked" structure proposed by Benkraouda and Clem. Quantitative analysis gives an estimate of the pinning force and the coupling between the stacks. Our measurements highlight the discrete nature of stacks of pancake …
One of the most essential aspects of cuprate superconductors is a large pseudogap coexisting with a superconducting gap, then some anomalous properties can be understood in terms of the formation of the pseudogap. Within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism, the effect of the pseudogap on the infrared response of cuprate superconductors in the superconducting-state is studied. By considering the interplay between the superconducting gap and pseudogap, the electron current-current correlation function is evaluated based on the linear response approach and it then is employed to c…
We analyze critical behavior of superfluid density $ρ_s$ in strongly disordered superconductors near superconductor-insulator transition and compare it with the behavior of the spectral gap $Δ$ for collective excitations. We show that in contrast to conventional superconductors, the superconductors with preformed pairs display unusual scaling relation $ρ_s \propto Δ^2$ close to superconductor-insulator transition. This relation have been reported in very recent experiments.
