Molecular clouds are the most important incubators of young stars clustered in various stellar structures whose spatial extension can vary from a few AU to several thousand AU. Although the reality of these stellar systems has been established, the physical origin of their multiplicity remains an open question. Our aim was to characterise these stellar groups at the onset of their formation by quantifying both the number of stars they contain and their mass using a hierarchical fragmentation model of the natal molecular cloud. We developed a stochastic and predictive model that reconciles the continuous multi-scale structure of a fragmenting molecular cloud with the discrete nature of the stars that are the products of this fragmentation. This model was implemented within a gravo-turbulent fragmentation framework to analytically follow the fragmentation properties along spatial scales using an isothermal and adiabatic equations of state (EOSs). Using an adiabatic EOS we determined a characteristic spatial scale where further fragmentation is prevented, around a few tens of AU. We show that fragmentation is a self-regulated process as fragments tend to become marginally unstable following a $M \propto R$ Bonnor-Ebert-like mass-size profile. Supersonic turbulent fragmentation structures the cloud down to $R \approx 0.1$ pc, and gradually turns into a less productive Jeans-type fragmentation under subsonic conditions so hierarchical fragmentation is a scale dependant process. Our work suggests that pre-stellar objects resulting from gas fragmentation, have to progressively increase their accretion rate in order to form stars. A hierarchical fragmentation scenario is compatible with both the multiplicity of stellar systems identified in Taurus and the multi-scale structure extracted within NGC 2264 molecular cloud.
The origin of the diffuse interstellar bands is one of the longest-standing mysteries of the interstellar medium is explored within the framework of The Heterogeneous dust Evolution Model at the IaS (THEMIS). The likely nature of the diffuse interstellar band carriers and their evolution is here explored within the framework of the structures and sub-structures inherent to doped hydrogenated amorphous carbon grains in the interstellar medium. Based on the natural aromatic-rich moieties (ashphaltenes) recovered from coal and oil the likely structure of their interstellar analogues is investigat…
Aims. Due to the limitations of current computational technology, the fragmentation and isomerization products of vibrationally-excited polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules and their derivatives are poorly studied. In this work, we investigate the intermediate products of PAHs and their derivatives as well as the gas-phase reactions relevant to the interstellar medium, with coronene as a case study. Methods. Based on the semi-empirical method of PM3 as implemented in the CP2K program, molecular dynamics simulations are performed to model the major processes (e.g., vibrations, fragme…
We have investigated the interstellar reddening law of young open clusters within 3kpc from the Sun using optical, near-IR 2MASS, and Spitzer IRAC data. The total-to-selective extinction ratio Rv of 162 young open clusters (log t{age} <= 7.3) listed in the open cluster database WEBDA is determined from the color excess ratios. The young open clusters in the Sgr-Car arm show a relatively higher $R_V$, those in the Per arm and in the Cygnus region of the local arm show a relatively smaller value, and those in the Mon-CMa region of the local arm show a normal value (Rv ~ 3.1).
Context: The formation of high-mass star-forming regions from their parental gas cloud and the subsequent fragmentation processes lie at the heart of star formation research. Aims: We aim to study the dynamical and fragmentation properties at very early evolutionary stages of high-mass star formation. Methods: Employing the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) and the IRAM 30m telescope, we observed two young high-mass star-forming regions, ISOSS22478 and ISOSS23053, in the 1.3mm continuum and spectral line emission at a high angular resolution (~0.8''). Results: We resolved 29 cores tha…
Line-of-sight extinction estimates to well-studied young T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars are based on many different measurements and analysis methods. This has resulted in wide scatter among the published $A_V$ values for the same star. In this work, we discuss the challenges in measuring extinction to actively accreting and especially outbursting young stellar objects (YSOs). We then explore a method not previously applied to young stars utilizing diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). In early-type stars, narrow correlations exist between DIB equivalent widths and the column density of interstel…
The distributions of a galaxy's gas and stars in chemical space encodes a tremendous amount of information about that galaxy's physical properties and assembly history. However, present methods for extracting information from chemical distributions are based either on coarse averages measured over galactic scales (e.g., metallicity gradients) or on searching for clusters in chemical space that can be identified with individual star clusters or gas clouds on $\sim 1$ pc scales. These approaches discard most of the information, because in galaxies gas and young stars are observed to be distribut…
Sh 2-29 is a conspicuous star-forming region marked by the presence of massive embedded stars as well as several notable interstellar structures. In this research, our goals were to determine the role of magnetic fields and to study the size distribution of interstellar dust particles within this turbulent environment. We have used a set of optical and near-infrared polarimetric data obtained at OPD/LNA (Brazil) and CTIO (Chile), correlated with extinction maps, 2MASS data and images from DSS and Spitzer. The region's most striking feature is a swept out interstellar cavity whose polarimetric …

Interstellar reddening corrections are necessary to reconstruct the intrinsic spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of accreting protostellar systems. The stellar SED determines the heating and chemical processes that can occur in circumstellar disks. Measurement of neutral hydrogen absorption against broad Lyman-$α$ emission profiles in young stars can be used to obtain the total H I column density (N(H I)) along the line of sight. We measure N(H I) with new and archival ultraviolet observations from the Hubble Space Telescope ($HST$) of 31 classical T Tauri and Herbig Ae/Be stars. The H I col…
Ejecta knot flickering, ablation tails, and fragmentation are expected signatures associated with the gradual dissolution of high-velocity supernova (SN) ejecta caused by their passage through an inhomogeneous circumstellar or interstellar medium. Such phenomena mark the initial stages of the gradual merger of SN ejecta with and the enrichment of the surrounding interstellar medium. Here we report on an investigation of this process through changes in the optical flux and morphology of several high-velocity ejecta knots located in the outskirts of the young core-collapse SN remnant Cassiopeia …
Interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are expected to be strongly processed by vacuum ultraviolet photons. Here, we report experimental studies on the ionization and fragmentation of coronene (C24H12), ovalene (C32H14) and hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC; C42H18) cations by exposure to synchrotron radiation in the range of 8--40 eV. The results show that for small PAH cations such as coronene, fragmentation (H-loss) is more important than ionization. However, as the size increases, ionization becomes more and more important and for the HBC cation, ionization dominates. These re…
We study the influence of gas metallicity, turbulence, and non-equilibrium chemistry on the evolution of the two-phase interstellar medium (warm and cold atomic phases), and thereby constrain the initial conditions for star formation prevailing in turbulent gas. We perform high-resolution simulations in three dimensions, including a realistic non-equilibrium treatment of the ionization state of the gas, and examine both driven and decaying turbulence. This allows us to explore variations in the metallicity Z. In this paper, we study solar metallicity, Z=Z_sun, and low metallicity, Z=1d-3 Z_sun…
We report the detection of a new Galactic bubble at the interface between the halo and the Galactic disc. We suggest that the nearby Lupus complex and parts of the Ophiuchus complex constitute the denser parts of the structure. This young bubble, < 3 Myr old, could be the remnant of a supernova and expands inside a larger HI loop that has been created by the outflows of the Upper Scorpius OB association. An HI cavity filled with hot X-ray gas is associated with the structure, which is consistent with the Galactic chimney scenario. The X-ray emission extends beyond the west and north-west edges…
We present an update to the framework called SImulator of GAlaxy Millimeter/submillimeter Emission (SÍGAME). SÍGAME derives line emission in the far-infrared (FIR) for galaxies in particle-based cosmological hydrodynamics simulations by applying radiative transfer and physics recipes via a post-processing step after completion of the simulation. In this version, a new technique is developed to model higher gas densities by parametrizing the gas density probability distribution function (PDF) in higher resolution simulations for use as a look-up table, allowing for more adaptive PDFs than in pr…
We explore the potential cumulative energy production of stellar mass black holes in early galaxies. Stellar mass black holes may accrete substantially from the higher density interstellar media of primordial galaxies, and their energy release would be distributed more uniformly over the galaxy, perhaps providing a different mode of energy feedback into young galaxies than central supermassive black holes. We construct a model for the production and growth of stellar mass black holes over the first few gigayears of a young galaxy. With the simplifying assumption of a constant density of the IS…
Metallicity fluctuation statistics in the interstellar medium and young stars -- II. Elemental cross-correlations and the structure of chemical abundance space
We review recent progress in elucidating the relationship between high-energy radiation and the interstellar medium (ISM) in young supernova remnants (SNRs) with ages of $\sim$2000 yr, focusing in particular on RX J1713.7$-$3946 and RCW 86. Both SNRs emit strong nonthermal X-rays and TeV $γ$-rays, and they contain clumpy distributions of interstellar gas that includes both atomic and molecular hydrogen. We find that shock-cloud interactions provide a viable explanation for the spatial correlation between the X-rays and ISM. In these interactions, the supernova shocks hit the typically pc-scale…
Direct imaging searches have revealed many very low-mass objects, including a small number of planetary mass objects, as wide-orbit companions to young stars. The formation mechanism of these objects remains uncertain. In this paper we present the predictions of the disc fragmentation model regarding the properties of the discs around such low-mass objects. We find that the discs around objects that have formed by fragmentation in discs hosted by Sun-like stars (referred to as 'parent' discs and 'parent' stars) are more massive than expected from the ${M}_{\rm disc}-M_*$ relation (which is der…
The interstellar molecular clouds are the site of star formation and also the target for the cosmic ray protons to produce γ-rays via the hadronic process. The interstellar atomic gas is enveloping the molecular clouds and may also be dense enough to affect the γ-ray production. In this Chapter, some of the basic properties of the interstellar gas both in molecular and atomic forms will be reviewed. Then, it is presented that two young TeV γ-ray SNRs, RX J1713.7-3946 and RX J0852.0-4622, show good spatial correspondence between the γ-rays and the interstellar protons. The good spatial correspo…
Recent studies of the nearest star-forming clouds of the Galaxy at submillimeter wavelengths with the Herschel Space Observatory have provided us with unprecedented images of the initial conditions and early phases of the star formation process. The Herschel images reveal an intricate network of filamentary structure in every interstellar cloud. These filaments all exhibit remarkably similar widths - about a tenth of a parsec - but only the densest ones contain prestellar cores, the seeds of future stars. The Herschel results favor a scenario in which interstellar filaments and prestellar core…
The comparison of chemical abundances in the neutral gas of galaxies to photospheric abundances of old and young stars, ionized gas abundances, and abundances in galactic halos can trace the chemical enrichment of the universe through cosmic times. In particular, our understanding of chemical enrichment through spectroscopic observations of damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) relies on corrections for depletion of metals from the gas to the dust phase. These corrections must be determined in the nearby universe, where both gas-phase abundances and photospheric abundances of young stars recently …
We present a study of the correlation between the direction of the symmetry axis of the circumstellar material around intermediate mass young stellar objects and that of the interstellar magnetic field. We use CCD polarimetric data on 100 Herbig Ae/Be stars. A large number of them shows intrinsic polarization, which indicates that their circumstellar envelopes are not spherical. The interstellar magnetic field direction is estimated from the polarization of field stars. There is an alignment between the position angle of the Herbig Ae/Be star polarization and that of the field stars for the mo…
We present observations of an H$α$ emitting knot in the thick disk of NGC 4013, demonstrating it is an H II region surrounding a cluster of young hot stars $z = 860$ pc above the plane of this edge-on spiral galaxy. With LBT/MODS spectroscopy we show this H II region has an H$α$ luminosity $\sim 4$ - 7 times that of the Orion nebula, with an implied ionizing photon production rate $\log Q_0 \gtrsim 49.4$ (photons s$^{-1}$). HST/WFPC2 imaging reveals an associated blue continuum source with $M_{V} = -8.21\pm0.24$. Together these properties demonstrate the H II region is powered by a young clust…
The bathtub model of the star forming interstellar medium is based on the powerful constraint that mass has to be conserved when gas flows through its various thermal and density phases, ending up eventually in a young star or being blown away by stellar feedback. It predicts that the star formation rate of a molecular cloud is not determined by the cloud's mass or its internal collapse timescale, but rather by the accretion rate of new gas. For the most simple case of a constant accretion flow an equilibrium state is reached quickly where the star formation rate equals the accretion rate and …
The possible detection of C_{24}, a planar graphene, recently reported in several planetary nebulae by Garciaa-Hernandez et al. (2011, 2012) inspires us to explore whether and how much graphene could exist in the interstellar medium (ISM) and how it would reveal its presence through its ultraviolet (UV) extinction and infrared (IR) emission. In principle, interstellar graphene could arise from the photochemical processing of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules which are abundant in the ISM through a complete loss of their hydrogen atoms and/or from graphite which is thought to be a…
Dwarf galaxies are by far the most numerous galaxies in the Universe, showing properties that are quite different from those of their larger and more luminous cousins. This review focuses on the physical and chemical properties of the interstellar medium of those dwarfs that are known to host significant amounts of gas and dust. The neutral and ionized gas components and the impact of the dust will be discussed, as well as first indications for the existence of active nuclei in these sources. Cosmological implications are also addressed, considering the primordial helium abundance and the simi…
The low velocity of interstellar asteroid 1I/'Oumuamua with respect to our galaxy's Local Standard of Rest implies it is young. Adopting the young age hypothesis, we assess possible origin systems for this interstellar asteroid and for 2I/Borisov, though the latter's higher speed means it is unlikely to be young. First, their past trajectories are modelled under gravitational scattering by galactic components ('disk heating') to assess how far back one can trace them. The stochastic nature of disk heating means that a back-integration can only expect to be accurate to within 15 pc and 2 kms$^{…
Stars form in molecular clouds in the interstellar medium (ISM) with a turbulent kinematic state. Newborn stars therefore should retain the turbulent kinematics of their natal clouds. Gaia DR2 and APOGEE-2 surveys in combination provide three-dimensional (3D) positions and 3D velocities of young stars in the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. Using the full 6D measurements, we compute the velocity structure functions (VSFs) of the stars in six different groups within the Orion Complex. We find that the motions of stars in all diffuse groups exhibit strong characteristics of turbulence. Their first…
[abridged] Unbound young stellar systems, the loose ensembles of physically related young bright stars, trace the typical regions of recent star formation in galaxies. Their morphologies vary from small associations of stars to enormous stellar complexes. Being associated with star-forming regions of various sizes, they trace the regions where stars form at various scales, from compact clusters to whole galactic disks. They have been, thus, the focus of several studies with special interest on their demographics, classification, and structural morphology. Their surveys demonstrate that the cle…
Interstellar bubbles are structures in the interstellar medium with diameters of a few to tens of parsecs. Their progenitors are stellar winds, intense radiation of massive stars, or supernova explosions. Star formation and young stellar objects are commonly associated with these structures. We compare IR observations of bubbles N115, N116 and N117 with atomic, molecular and ionized gas in this region. While determining the dynamical properties of the bubbles, we also look into their ambient environment to understand their formation in a wider context. For finding bubbles in HI (VLA Galactic P…
We perform a comparative analysis of the spatial distribution of young (<50 Myr) open star clusters and field Cepheids with different metallicities. A significant fraction of young clusters are shown to have low metallicities atypical of field Cepheids. Both types of objects exhibit approximately equal (in magnitude) negative radial metallicity gradients, while their azimuthal metallicity gradients differ outside the error limits and have opposite signs. Among the stellar complexes identified by young clusters, the most metal-poor clusters are grouped in the Perseus complex. It is the clusters…
Magnetic fields are an elemental part of the interstellar medium in galaxies. However, their impact on gas dynamics and star formation in galaxies remains controversial. We use a suite of global magnetohydrodynamical simulations of isolated disc galaxies to study the influence of magnetic fields on the diffuse and dense gas in the discs. We find that the magnetic field acts in multiple ways. Stronger magnetised discs fragment earlier due to the shorter growth time of the Parker instability. Due to the Parker instability in the magnetised discs we also find cold ($T<50\,\mathrm{K}$) and dense (…
We present the results of a simple numerical model with phenomenological cloud growth and explosive disruption processes, and with fountain launched ballistic motions of disrupted cloud fragments out of the disk. These processes generate an effective scattering of gas elements over much larger distances than noncircular impulses in the plane, which are quickly damped. The result is evolution of the global cloud density profile to an exponential form on a roughly Gyr timescale. This is consistent with our previous results on the effects of star scattering o? massive clumps in young disks, and g…
We have analyzed the atomic and molecular gas using the 21 cm HI and 2.6/1.3 mm CO emissions toward the young supernova remnant (SNR) RCW 86 in order to identify the interstellar medium with which the shock waves of the SNR interact. We have found an HI intensity depression in the velocity range between $-46$ and $-28$ km s$^{-1}$ toward the SNR, suggesting a cavity in the interstellar medium. The HI cavity coincides with the thermal and non-thermal emitting X-ray shell. The thermal X-rays are coincident with the edge of the HI distribution, which indicates a strong density gradient, while the…
The expansion of interstellar bubbles is suggested to be an important mechanism of triggering material accumulation and star formation. In this work, we study the gaseous environment of a large sample of bubbles, aiming to explore the possible evidence of triggered gas accumulation and star formation in a statistical sense. By cross-matching 6124 Spitzer bubbles from the Milky Way Project (MWP) and more than 2500 Galactic HII regions, we obtain the velocity information for 818 MWP bubbles. To study the gaseous environment of the interstellar bubbles and get rid of the projection effect as much…
We present a comprehensive multiwavelength investigation of a likely massive young cluster `IRAS 05100+3723' and its environment with the aim to understand its formation history and feedback effects. We find that IRAS 05100+3723 is a distant ($\sim$3.2 kpc), moderate mass ($\sim$500 \msun), young ($\sim$3 Myr) cluster with its most massive star being an O8.5V-type. From spectral modeling, we estimate the effective temperature and log $g$ of the star as $\sim$33,000 K and $\sim$3.8, respectively. Our radio continuum observations reveal that the star has ionized its environment forming an HII re…
The motion of planetary nebulae (PNe) through the interstellar medium (ISM) is thought to lead to a variety of observational consequences, including the formation of bright rims; deformation and fragmentation of the shells; and a shift of the central stars away from the geometric centres of the envelopes. These and other characteristics have been noted through imaging in the visual wavelength regime. We report further observations of such shells taken in the mid-infrared (MIR), acquired through programs of IRAC imaging undertaken using the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST). NGC 2440 and NGC 6629 a…
We analyse the cluster luminosity functions (CLFs) of the youngest star clusters in three galaxies exhibiting prominent circumnuclear starburst rings. We focus specifically on NGC 1512 and NGC 6951, for which we have access to H$α$ data that allow us to unambiguously identify the youngest sample clusters. To place our results on a firm statistical footing, we first explore in detail a number of important technical issues affecting the process from converting the observational data into the spectral-energy distributions of the objects in our final catalogues. The CLFs of the young clusters in b…
Phosphorus ($^{31}$P), which is essential for life, is thought to be synthesized in massive stars and dispersed into interstellar space when these stars explode as supernovae (SNe). Here we report on near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the young SN remnant Cassiopeia A, which show that the abundance ratio of phosphorus to the major nucleosynthetic product iron ($^{56}$Fe) in SN material is up to 100 times the average ratio of the Milky Way, confirming that phosphorus is produced in SNe. The observed range is compatible with predictions from SN nucleosynthetic models but not with the sc…
Little is known about how high-mass stars form. Around 30\% of the young high-mass stars in the Galaxy are observed at the edges of ionized (HII) regions. Therefore these are places of choice to study the earliest stages of high-mass star formation, especially towards the most massive condensations. High-spatial resolution observations in the millimeter range might reveal how these stars form and how they assemble their mass. We want to study the fragmentation process down to the 0.01~pc scale in the most massive condensation observed at the south-western edge of the HII region RCW~120 where t…
Shocks may have been prevalent in the early Universe, associated with virialization and supernova explosions, etc. Here, we study thermal evolution and fragmentation of shock-compressed clouds, by using a one-zone model with detailed thermal and chemical processes. We explore a large range of initial density (1-1e5 /cm^3), metallicity (0-1e-2 Z_sun), UV strength (0-500 times Galactic value), and cosmic microwave background temperature (10 and 30 K). Shock-compressed clouds contract isobarically via atomic and molecular line cooling, until self-gravitating clumps are formed by fragmentation. If…
We tested the distances derived from the equivalent widths of interstellar CaII spectral lines by Megier et al. 2009. To this end, we used a sample of nearby 126 young OB3 stars ($r<1$ kpc) with known proper motions and line-of-site velocities. It is shown that these stars are tightly bounded with the Gould Belt structure. Most part of this sample (about 100 stars) show the same kinematics as the sample of distant OB3 stars. Their galactocentric radial velocities are in good agreement with the following spiral density wave parameters: amplitude of radial perturbations $f_R\approx$12 km/s, wave…
We report new, $\sim$1000 AU spatial resolution observations of 225 GHz dust continuum emission towards the OB cluster-forming molecular clump G33.92+0.11. On parsec scales, this molecular clump presents a morphology with several arm-like dense gas structures surrounding the two central massive ($\gtrsim$100 $M_{\odot}$) cores. From the new, higher resolution observations, we identified 28 localized, spatially compact dust continuum emission sources, which may be candidates of young stellar objects. Only one of them is not embedded within known arm-like (or elongated) dense gas structures. The…
Understanding the formation of wide binary systems of very low mass stars (M $\le$ 0.1 Msun) is challenging. The most obvious route is via widely separated low-mass collapsing fragments produced through turbulent fragmentation of a molecular core. However, close binaries/multiples from disk fragmentation can also evolve to wide binaries over a few initial crossing times of the stellar cluster through tidal evolution. Finding an isolated low mass wide binary system in the earliest stage of formation, before tidal evolution could occur, would prove that turbulent fragmentation is a viable mechan…
The fragmentation of a molecular cloud that leads to the formation of high-mass stars occurs on a hierarchy of different spatial scales. The large molecular clouds harbour massive molecular clumps with massive cores embedded in them. The fragmentation of these cores may determine the initial mass function and the masses of the final stars. Therefore, studying the fragmentation processes in the cores is crucial to understand how massive stars form. The hot molecular core G34-MM1, embedded in IRDC G34.34+00.24 located at a distance of 3.6 kpc, is a promising object to study both the fragmentatio…
The kinetic energy of supersonic turbulence within interstellar clouds is subject to cooling by dissipation in shocks and subsequent line radiation. The clouds are therefore susceptible to a condensation process controlled by the specific entropy. In a form analogous to the thermodynamic entropy, the entropy for supersonic turbulence is proportional to the log of the product of the mean turbulent velocity and the size scale. We derive a dispersion relation for the growth of entropic instabilities in a spherical self-gravitating cloud and find that there is a critical maximum dissipation time s…
Protostars grow in mass by accreting material through their discs, and this accretion is initially their main source of luminosity. The resulting radiative feedback heats the environments of young protostars, and may thereby suppress further fragmentation and star formation. There is growing evidence that the accretion of material onto protostars is episodic rather than continuous; most of it happens in short bursts that last up to a few hundred years, whereas the intervals between these outbursts of accretion could be thousands of years. We have developed a model to include the effects of epi…
Recent \herschel\ and \planck\ observations of submillimeter dust emission revealed the omnipresence of filamentary structures in the interstellar medium (ISM). The ubiquity of filaments in quiescent clouds as well as in star-forming regions indicates that the formation of filamentary structures is a natural product of the physics at play in the magnatized turbulent cold ISM. An analysis of more than 270 filaments observed with {\it Herschel} in 8 regions of the Gould Belt, shows that interstellar filaments are characterized by a narrow distribution of central width, while they span a wide col…
We examine the linear stability and nonlinear growth of the thermal instability in isobarically contracting gas with various metallicities and FUV field strengths. When the H2 cooling is suppressed by FUV fields (G_0>10^-3) or the metallicity is high enough (Z/Zs>10^-3), the interstellar medium is thermally unstable in the temperature range 100-7000 K owing to the cooling by CII and OI fine-structure lines. In this case, a bi-phasic medium with a bimodal density probability distribution is formed as a consequence of the thermal instability. The characteristic scales of the thermal instability …
