We introduce the fluctuating Line-of-Sight (fLoS) fading model, characterized by parameters $K$, $k$, $λ$, and $Ω$. The fLoS fading distribution is expressed in terms of the multivariate confluent hypergeometric functions $Ψ_2$, $Φ_3^{(n)}$, and $Φ_3 = Φ_3^{(2)}$ and encompasses well-known distributions, such as the Nakagami-$m$, Hoyt, Rice, and Rician shadowed fading distributions as special cases. An efficient method to numerically compute the fLoS fading distribution is also addressed. Notably, for a positive integer $k$, the fLoS fading distribution simplifies to a finite mixture of $κ$-$μ$ distributions. Additionally, we analyze the outage probability and Ergodic capacity, presenting a tailored Prony's approximation method for the latter. Numerical results are presented to show the impact of the fading parameters and verify the accuracy of the proposed approximation. Moreover, we illustrate an application of the proposed fLoS fading distribution for characterizing wireless systems affected by channel aging.
The proposed research performs the capacity analysis of the wireless channel described by the fluctuating double-Rayleigh with the line-of-sight model. The closed-form analytical expressions for the conditional capacity (in the case of arbitrary noninteger fading parameter) and the ergodic capacity (in the case of the integer fading parameter) are derived in terms of the extended generalized bivariate Meijer G-function. The exact solutions are succeeded by the approximating expressions deduced for the cases of small and large ratios between the Rician K-factor and the fading parameter. The per…
The recently proposed Fluctuating Two-Ray (FTR) model is gaining momentum as a reference fading model in scenarios where two dominant specular waves are present. Despite the numerous research works devoted to the performance analysis under FTR fading, little attention has been paid to effectively understanding the interplay between the fading model parameters and the fading severity. According to a new scale defined in this work, which measures the hyper-Rayleigh character of a fading channel in terms of the Amount of Fading, the outage probability and the average capacity, we see that the FTR…
Recently, a generalization of the double-Rayleigh with line-of-sight channel fading model taking into account shadowing of the line-of-sight component has been proposed. In this research, a closed-form analysis of the average bit error rate for MPSK/MQAM modulations is performed. The derived solution is accompanied by proposed numerically efficient approximation and all possible asymptotic expressions that correspond to extreme channel parameters. Lastly, a numerical simulation was performed that demonstrated the correctness of the derived results.
We introduce the fdRLoS fading model as a natural generalization of the double-Rayleigh with line-of-sight fading model, on which the constant-amplitude line-of-sight component is now allowed to randomly fluctuate. We discuss the key benefits of the fdRLoS fading model here formulated over the state of the art, and provide an analytical characterization of its chief probability functions. We analyze the effect of the fading parameters that define the model, and discuss their impact on the performance of wireless communication systems.
We introduce and characterize the independent fluctuating two-ray (IFTR) fading model, a class of fading models consisting of two specular components which fluctuate independently, plus a diffuse component modeled as a complex Gaussian random variable. The IFTR model complements the popular fluctuating two-ray (FTR) model, on which the specular components are fully correlated and fluctuate jointly. The chief probability functions of the received SNR in IFTR fading, including the PDF, CDF and MGF, are expressed in closed-form, having a functional form similar to other state-of-the-art fading mo…
The fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading model provides a much better fit than other fading models for small-scale fading measurements in millimeter wave communications. In this paper, using a mixture of gamma distributions, new exact analytical expressions for the probability density and cumulative distribution functions of the FTR distribution with arbitrary fading parameters are presented. Moreover, the performance of digital communication systems over the FTR fading channel is evaluated in terms of the channel capacity and the bit error rate. The interaction between channel fading parameters a…
The effective rate of Fluctuating Beckmann (FB) fading channel is analysed. The moment generating function (MGF) of the instantaneous signal-to-noise (SNR) is used first to derive the effective rate for arbitrary values of the fading parameters in terms of the extended generalised bivariate Meijer's-$G$ function (EGBMGF). For integer valued of the multipath and shadowing severity fading parameters, the probability density function (PDF) of the instantaneous SNR is employed. To this end, simple exact mathematically tractable analytic expression is obtained. The Monte Carlo simulations and the n…
Mitigating channel fading and transceiver impairments are desirable for high-speed terahertz (THz) wireless links. This paper analyzes the performance of a multi-antenna THz wireless system by considering the combined effect of pointing errors and fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading model. We provide a statistical characterization of the maximal ratio combining (MRC) receiver over independent and nonidentical (i.ni.d.) channel conditions in terms of multi-variate Fox's H by deriving density and distribution functions of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a single-link THz link using incomplete Ga…
Ensuring the physical layer security (PHY-security) of millimeter wave (mmWave) communications is one of the key factors for the success of 5G. Recent field measurements show that conventional fading models cannot accurately model the random fluctuations of mmWave signals. To tackle this challenge, the fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading model has been proposed. In this correspondence, we comprehensively analyze the PHY-security in mmWave communications over FTR fading channels. More specifically, we derive analytical expressions for significant PHY-security metrics, such as average secrecy capac…
We introduce the Fluctuating Two-Ray (FTR) fading model, a new statistical channel model that consists of two fluctuating specular components with random phases plus a diffuse component. The FTR model arises as the natural generalization of the two-wave with diffuse power (TWDP) fading model; this generalization allows its two specular components to exhibit a random amplitude fluctuation. Unlike the TWDP model, all the chief probability functions of the FTR fading model (PDF, CDF and MGF) are expressed in closed-form, having a functional form similar to other state-of-the-art fading models. We…
In this paper, we analyse the performance of physical layer security over Fluctuating Beckmann (FB) fading channel which is an extended model of both the $κ-μ$ shadowed and the classical Beckmann distributions. Specifically, the average secrecy capacity (ASC), secure outage probability (SOP), the lower bound of SOP (SOP$^L$), and the probability of strictly positive secrecy capacity (SPSC) are derived in exact closed-form expressions using two different values of the fading parameters, namely, $m$ and $μ$ which represent the multipath and shadowing severity impacts, respectively. Firstly, when…
The performance of energy detection (ED) for independent and identically distribution (i.i.d.) signal models is analyzed over generalized composite non-linear line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) shadowed fading scenarios. The novel expressions for α-\k{appa}-μ/Gamma and α-η-μ/Gamma fading channels have been derived to approximate by using the mixture gamma (MG) distribution under low instantaneous signal-to-noise (SNR) condition. On the basis of the deduced fading distributions, novel, exact and close-form detective models are derived to evaluate the sensing performance with diffe…
This paper presents key parameters including the line-of-sight (LOS) probability, large-scale path loss, and shadow fading models for the design of future fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems in urban macro-cellular (UMa) scenarios, using the data obtained from propagation measurements at 38 GHz in Austin, US, and at 2, 10, 18, and 28 GHz in Aalborg, Denmark. A comparison of different LOS probability models is performed for the Aalborg environment. Alpha-betagamma and close-in reference distance path loss models are studied in depth to show their value in channel modeling. Addi…
This paper considers the uplink (UL) of a multi-cell Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system with spatially correlated Rician fading channels. The channel model is composed of a deterministic line-of-sight (LoS) path and a stochastic non-line-of-sight (NLoS) component describing a spatially correlated multipath environment. We derive the statistical properties of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) and least-square (LS) channel estimates for this model. Using these estimates for maximum ratio (MR) combining, rigorous closed-form UL spectral efficiency (SE) expressions are derive…
Energy detection is a reliable non-coherent signal processing technology of spectrum sensing of cognitive radio networks, which thanks to its low complexity, no requirement of priori received information and fast sensing ability etc. Since the excellent performance of energy detection would be actually affected by physical multipath fading, this paper is concentrating on characteristics analysis of energy detection over composite shadowed fading channels. The small-scale and line-of-sight fading distribution consists of particular examples such as Rayleigh, Hoyt, Nakagami-m and one sided Gauss…
This paper considers multi-cell Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) systems where the channels are spatially correlated Rician fading. The channel model is composed of a deterministic line-of-sight (LoS) path and a stochastic non-line-of-sight (NLoS) component describing a practical spatially correlated multipath environment. We derive the statistical properties of the minimum mean squared error (MMSE), element-wise MMSE (EW-MMSE), and least-square (LS) channel estimates for this model. Using these estimates for maximum ratio (MR) combining and precoding, rigorous closed-form uplink …
We present a new approach to the statistical characterization of the second order scattering fading (SOSF) channel model, which greatly simplifies its analysis. Exploiting the unadvertised fact that the SOSF channel can be seen as a continuous mixture of Rician fading channels, we obtain expressions for its probability density function and cumulative density function that are numerically better-behaved than those available in the literature. Our approach allows for obtaining new results for the SOSF model, such as a closed-form expression for its moment-generating function, as well as the char…
This work considers a multicell Massive MIMO network with $L$ cells, each comprising a BS with $M$ antennas and $K$ single-antenna user equipments. Within this setting, we are interested in deriving approximations of the achievable rates in the uplink and downlink under the assumption that single-cell linear processing is used at each BS and that each intracell link forms an uncorrelated MIMO Rician fading channel matrix; that is, with a deterministic line-of-sight (LoS) path and a stochastic non-line-of-sight component describing a spatial uncorrelated multipath environment. The analysis is c…
In this paper, we investigate the downlink performance of dense cellular networks with elevated base stations (BSs) using a channel model that incorporates line-of-sight (LOS)/non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation in both small-scale and large-scale fading. Modeling LOS fading with Nakagami-$m$ fading, we provide a unified framework based on stochastic geometry that encompasses both closest and strongest BS association. Our study is particularized to two distance-dependent LOS/NLOS models of practical interest. Considering the effect of LOS propagation alone, we derive closed-form expressions f…
While the efficiency of MIMO transmissions in a rich scattering environment has been demonstrated, less is known about the situation where the fading matrix coefficients come from a line-of-sight model. In this paper, we study in detail how this line-of-sight assumption affects the performance of distributed MIMO transmissions between far away clusters of nodes in a wireless network. Our analysis pertains to the study of a new class of random matrices.
In this work, we carry out a unified performance analysis of a dual-hop fixed gain relay system over asymmetric links composed of both radio-frequency (RF) and unified free-space optics (FSO) under the effect of pointing errors. The RF link is modeled by the Nakagami-$m$ fading channel and the FSO link by the Gamma-Gamma fading channel subject to both types of detection techniques (i.e. heterodyne detection and intensity modulation with direct detection (IM/DD)). In particular, we derive new unified closed-form expressions for the cumulative distribution function, the probability density funct…
We here introduce an extension and natural generalization of both the κ-μ$\,$shadowed and the classical Beckmann fading models: the Fluctuating Beckmann (FB) fading model. This new model considers the clustering of multipath waves on which the line-of-sight (LoS) components randomly fluctuate, together with the effect of in-phase/quadrature power imbalance in the LoS and non-LoS components. Thus, it unifies a variety of important fading distributions as the one-sided Gaussian, Rayleigh, Nakagami-m, Rician, κ-μ, η-μ, η-κ, Beckmann, Rician shadowed and the κ-μ$\,$shadowed distribution. The chief…
This paper considers an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided multiple-input single-output communication system, where statistical channel state information (CSI) is exploited for transmit beamforming and IRS beamforming. A tight upper bound is derived for the ergodic capacity of the system. Based on which, the joint optimization of transmit beam and IRS beam are studied. Depending on whether a line-of-sight path exists between the access point and user, two different cases, namely, Rician fading and Rayleigh fading, are separately treated. Specifically, for the Rician fading case, an ite…
This work considers the uplink (UL) of a multi-cell massive MIMO system with $L$ cells, having each $K$ mono-antenna users communicating with an $N-$antennas base station (BS). The channel model involves Rician fading with distinct per-user Rician factors and channel correlation matrices and takes into account pilot contamination and imperfect CSI. The objective is to evaluate the performances of such systems with different single-cell and multi-cell detection methods. In the former, we investigate MRC and single-cell MMSE (S-MMSE); as to the latter, we are interested in multi-cell MMSE (M-MMS…
This paper addresses one of the classical problems in random matrix theory-- finding the distribution of the maximum eigenvalue of the correlated Wishart unitary ensemble. In particular, we derive a new exact expression for the cumulative distribution function (c.d.f.) of the maximum eigenvalue of a $2\times 2$ correlated non-central Wishart matrix with rank-$1$ mean. By using this new result, we derive an exact analytical expression for the outage probability of $2\times 2$ multiple-input multiple-output maximum-ratio-combining (MIMO-MRC) in Rician fading with transmit correlation and a stron…
A new stochastic order between two fading distributions is introduced. A fading channel dominates another in the ergodic capacity ordering sense, if the Shannon transform of the first is greater than that of the second at all values of average signal to noise ratio. It is shown that some parametric fading models such as the Nakagami-m, Rician, and Hoyt are distributions that are monotonic in their line of sight parameters with respect to the ergodic capacity order. Some operations under which the ergodic capacity order is preserved are also discussed. Through these properties of the ergodic ca…
We consider a fading channel in which a multi-antenna transmitter communicates with a multi-antenna receiver through a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that is made of $N$ reconfigurable passive scatterers impaired by phase noise. The beamforming vector at the transmitter, the combining vector at the receiver, and the phase shifts of the $N$ scatterers are optimized in order to maximize the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) at the receiver. By assuming Rayleigh fading (or line-of-sight propagation) on the transmitter-RIS link and Rayleigh fading on the RIS-receiver link, we prove that the SN…
We carry out a theoretical analysis of the uplink (UL) of a massive MIMO system with per-user channel correlation and Rician fading, using two processing approaches. Firstly, we examine the linear minimum-mean-square-error receiver under training-based imperfect channel estimates. Secondly, we propose a statistical combining technique that is more suitable in environments with strong Line-of-Sight (LoS) components. We derive closed-form asymptotic approximations of the UL spectral efficiency (SE) attained by each combining scheme in single and multi-cell settings, as a function of the system p…
The precoding in cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology relies on accurate knowledge of channel responses between users (UEs) and access points (APs). Obtaining high-quality channel estimates in turn requires the path losses between pairs of UEs and APs to be known. These path losses may change rapidly especially in line-of-sight environments with moving blocking objects. A difficulty in the estimation of path losses is pilot contamination, that is, simultaneously transmitted pilots from different UEs that may add up destructively or constructively by chance, seriou…
Closed-form approximations of the expected per-terminal signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) and ergodic sum spectral efficiency of a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output system are presented. Our analysis assumes spatially correlated Ricean fading channels with maximum-ratio combining on the uplink. Unlike previous studies, our model accounts for the presence of unequal correlation matrices, unequal Rice factors, as well as unequal link gains to each terminal. The derived approximations lend themselves to useful insights, special cases and demonstrate the aggregate impact of lin…
Over-the-Air (OTA) computation is the problem of computing functions of distributed data without transmitting the entirety of the data to a central point. By avoiding such costly transmissions, OTA computation schemes can achieve a better-than-linear (depending on the function, often logarithmic or even constant) scaling of the communication cost as the number of transmitters grows. Among the most common functions computed OTA are linear functions such as weighted sums. In this work, we propose and analyze an analog OTA computation scheme for a class of functions that contains linear functions…
The use of unmanned aerial vehicle base stations (UAV-BSs) as airborne base stations has recently gained great attention. In this paper, we model a network of UAV-BSs as a Poisson point process (PPP) operating at a certain altitude above the ground users. We adopt an air-to-ground (A2G) channel model that incorporates line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) propagation. Thus, UAV-BSs can be decomposed into two independent inhomogeneous PPPs. Under the assumption that NLoS and LoS channels experience Rayleigh and Nakagami-m fading, respectively, we derive approximations for the coverag…
