The spatial organization of a passive scalar plume originating from a point source in a turbulent boundary layer is studied to understand its meandering characteristics. We focus shortly downstream of the isokinetic injection ($1.5\le x/δ\le 3$, $δ$ being boundary layer thickness) where the scalar concentration is highly intermittent, the plume rapidly \textit{meanders}, and \textit{breaks-up} into concentrated scalar pockets due to the action of turbulent structures. Two injection locations were considered: the center of logarithmic-region and the wake-region of the boundary layer. Simultaneous quantitative acetone planar laser-induced fluorescence (Ac-PLIF) and particle-image velocimetry (PIV) were performed in a wind-tunnel, to measure scalar mixture fraction and velocity fields. Single- and multi-point statistics were compared to established works to validate the diagnostic novelties. Additionally, the spatial characteristics of plume intermittency were quantified using `blob' size, shape, orientation and mean concentration. It was observed that straining, break up and spatial reorganization were the primary plume-evolution modes in this region, with little small-scale homogenization. Further, the dominant role of coherent vortex motions in plume meandering and break-up was evident. Their action is found to be the primary mechanism by which the injected scalar is transported away from the wall in high concentrations (`large meander events (LMEs)'). Strong spatial correlation was observed in both instantaneous and conditional fields between the high concentration regions and individual vortex heads. This coherent transport was weaker for wake-injection, where the plume only interacts with outer vortex motions. A coherent-structure based mechanism is suggested to explain these transport mechanisms.
Spatio-temporal deterministic chaos at small Taylor-Reynolds numbers $Re_λ \lesssim 40$ and distributed chaos at turbulent $Re_λ \gtrsim 40$ in passive scalar dynamics have been studied using results of direct numerical simulations of homogeneous incompressible flows (with and without mean gradient of the passive scalar) for $8 \leq Re_λ < 700$ and of a reacting turbulent mixing layer. It is shown that the deterministic chaos in the passive scalar fluctuations at the small $Re_λ$ is characterized by exponential spatial (wavenumber) spectrum: $E(k) \propto \exp-(k/k_c)$, whereas the distributed…
We have investigated the organization and dynamics of the large turbulent structures that develop in the logarithmic and outer layers of high-Reynolds-number wall flows. These structures have sizes comparable to the flow thickness and contain most of the turbulent kinetic energy. They produce a substantial fraction of the skin friction and play a key role in turbulent transport. In spite of their significance, there is much less information about the large structures far from the wall than about the small ones of the near-wall region. The main reason for this is the joint requirements of large…
We investigate experimentally the statistical properties of active and passive scalar fields in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in water, at $Ra\sim10^{10}$. Both the local concentration of fluorescence dye and the local temperature are measured near the sidewall of a rectangular cell. It is found that, although they are advected by the same turbulent flow, the two scalars distribute differently. This difference is twofold, i.e. both the quantities themselves and their small-scale increments have different distributions. Our results show that there is a certain buoyant scale based on time…
Chaotic and turbulent dispersion of passive heavy inertial particles in homogeneous two-dimensional turbulence with Ekman drag has been studied using notions of the effective diffusivity and distributed chaos. Results of recent direct numerical simulations have been used for this purpose. Effect of the Stokes number value on the applicability of these notions to the dispersion of passive heavy inertial particles has been briefly discussed.
We develop a passive control strategy for suppressing thermoacoustic instability in a bluff-body stabilized premixed turbulent combustor. When the equivalence ratio is varied, there is a transition from combustion noise to thermoacoustic instability via intermittency in the combustor. We perform simultaneous acoustic pressure, 2D-PIV, and CH$^*$ chemiluminescence measurements to capture the pressure fluctuations, the velocity field, and the heat release rate (HRR) field during the transition. We measure the spatial distribution of the amplitude of turbulent velocity at the acoustic frequency, …
Passive scalar mixing, produced by Lagrangian chaos generated a) by quasi-periodic (integrable) motion of three quasi-point vortices and b) by chaotic motion of three and six quasi-point vortices, has been studied and compared with turbulent mixing of passive scalar in 2D and 3D steady isotropic homogeneous turbulence and in turbulent wakes behind grid and behind cylinder. Results of numerical and laboratory experiments have been used and effective diffusivity approximation as well as distributed chaos approach have been applied to this problem.
Passive scalar transport in turbulent channel flow subject to spanwise system rotation is studied by direct numerical simulations. The Reynolds number $Re = U_b h/ν$ is fixed at $20\,000$ and the rotation number $Ro = 2 Ωh/U_b$ is varied from 0 to 1.2, where $U_b$ is the bulk mean velocity, $h$ the half channel gap width and $Ω$ the rotation rate. The scalar value is constant but different at the two walls, leading to steady scalar transport across the channel. The rotation causes an unstable channel side with relatively strong turbulence and turbulent scalar transport, and a stable channel si…
The Lagrangian view of passive scalar turbulence has recently produced interesting results and interpretations. Innovations in theory, experiments, simulations and data analysis of Lagrangian turbulence are reviewed here in brief. Part of the review is closely related to the so-called Kraichnan model for the advection of the passive scalar in synthetic turbulence. Possible implications for a better understanding of the passive scalar mixing in Navier-Stokes turbulence are also discussed.
We establish an hitherto hidden connection between zero modes and instantons in the context of the Kraichanan model for passive scalar turbulent advection, that relies on the hypothesis that the production of strong gradients of the scalar is associated with Bose-like condensation of Lagrangian particles. It opens the way to the computation of scaling exponents of the N-th order structure functions of the scalar by techniques borrowed from many-body theory. To lowest order of approximation, scaling exponents are found to increase asymptotically as log N in two dimensions.
In this paper we present an extension of the \emph{Recent Fluid Deformation (RFD)} closure introduced by Chevillard and Meneveau (2006) which was developed for modeling the time evolution of Lagrangian fluctuations in incompressible Navier-Stokes turbulence. We apply the RFD closure to study the evolution of magnetic and passive scalar fluctuations. This comparison is especially interesting since the stretching term for the magnetic field and for the gradient of the passive scalar are similar but differ by a sign such that the effect of stretching and compression by the turbulent velocity fiel…
The notion of helical distributed chaos has been used for the description of the spatio-temporal dynamics of the passive scalar tracers from the atmospheric surface layer up to the mesosphere (at different stability conditions and different latitudes). Point, linear and distributed sources and sinks with different types of artificial and natural trace-gases (ozone, carbon dioxide, etc.), and aerosols have been studied. Related properties of the solar radiation transmittance in the cloudy atmosphere have been also briefly discussed as well as analogous properties of the tracers in Jupiter's atm…
The effects of passive scalar anisotropy on subgrid-scale (SGS) physics and modeling for Large-Eddy Simulations are studied experimentally. Measurements are performed across a moderate Reynolds number wake flow generated by a heated cylinder, using an array of four X-wire and four cold-wire probes. By varying the separation distance among probes in the array, we obtain filtered and subgrid quantities at three different filter sizes. We compute several terms that comprise the subgrid dissipation tensor of kinetic energy and scalar-variance and test for isotropic behavior, as a function of filte…
Three-dimensional turbulence simulations are used to show that the turbulent root mean square velocity is an upper bound of the speed of turbulent diffusion. There is a close analogy to magnetic diffusion where the maximum diffusion speed is the speed of light. Mathematically, this is caused by the inclusion of the Faraday displacement current which ensures that causality is obeyed. In turbulent diffusion, a term similar to the displacement current emerges quite naturally when the minimal tau approximation is used. Simulations confirm the presence of such a term and give a quantitative measure…
We develop a mean-field theory of compressibility effects in turbulent magnetohydrodynamics and passive scalar transport using the quasi-linear approximation and the spectral $τ$-approach. We find that compressibility decreases the $α$ effect and the turbulent magnetic diffusivity both at small and large magnetic Reynolds numbers, Rm. Similarly, compressibility decreases the turbulent diffusivity for passive scalars both at small and large Péclet numbers, Pe. On the other hand, compressibility does not affect the effective pumping velocity of the magnetic field for large Rm, but it decreases i…
Direct numerical simulation data show that the variance of the coupling term in passive scalar advection by a random velocity field is smaller than it would be if the velocity and scalar fields were statistically independent. This effect is analogous to the "depression of nonlinearity" in hydrodynamic turbulence. We show that the trends observed in the numerical data are qualitatively consistent with the predictions of closure theories related to Kraichnan's direct interaction approximation. The phenomenon is demonstrated over a range of Prandtl numbers. In the inertial-convective range the de…
In heat transfer augmenting methods such as radial fins, the heat transfer enhancement commonly leads to the drag force increment. In the present paper, slots are inserted over the fins to simultaneously reduce the drag coefficient. Turbulent convection heat transfer around a cylinder, as well as oscillating bundle of tubes including the slotted radial fins have been investigated. The governing equations are solved in two-dimension utilizing OpenFOAM software based on k-ω SST closure model. The cases with various slot location, slot width, the number of the slots, the fin height, and oscillati…
We study the influence of the energy spectrum on the extent of the cascade range of a passive tracer in turbulent flows. The interesting cases are when there are two different spectra over the potential range of the tracer cascade (in 2D when the tracer forcing is in the inverse energy cascade range, and in 3D when the Schmidt number Sc is large). The extent of the tracer cascade range is then limited by the width of the range for the shallower of the two energy spectra. Nevertheless, we show that in dimension $d=2,3$ the tracer cascade range extends (up to a logarithm) to $κ_{d\text{D}}^{p}$,…
We derive scaling relations for the thermal dissipation rate in the bulk and in the boundary layers for moderate and large Prandtl number (Pr) convection. Using direct numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard convection, we show that the thermal dissipation in the bulk is suppressed compared to passive scalar dissipation. The suppression is stronger for large Pr. We further show that the dissipation in the boundary layers dominates that in the bulk for both moderate and large Pr. The probability distribution functions of thermal dissipation rate, both in the bulk and in the boundary layers, ar…
Influence of statistically stationary, homogeneous, and isotropic turbulence on the mean area of a passive self-propagating front and, hence, on the rate of fluid consumption by the front is analysed in the case of asymptotically high turbulent Reynolds number $Re_L$ and asymptotically high ratio of the Kolmogorov velocity to a constant speed $u_0$ of the front. By considering an early stage of the front evolution, the mean (over the studied early stage) front area and consumption velocity $\bar{u}_T$ are analytically determined. The analysis shows that the mean $\bar{u}_T$ is proportional to …
The energy and flux budget (EFB) closure theory for a passive scalar (non-buoyant and non-inertial particles or gaseous admixtures) is developed for stably stratified turbulence. The physical background of the EFB turbulence closures is based on the budget equations for the turbulent kinetic and potential energies and turbulent fluxes of momentum and buoyancy, as well as the turbulent flux of particles. The EFB turbulence closure is designed for stratified geophysical flows from neutral to very stable stratification and it implies that turbulence is maintained by the velocity shear at any stra…
We investigate through Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) the statistical properties of turbulent flows in the inertial subrange for non-Newtonian power-law fluids. The structural invariance found for the vortex size distribution is achieved through a self-organized mechanism at the microscopic scale of the turbulent motion that adjusts, according to the rheological properties of the fluid, the ratio between the viscous dissipations inside and outside the vortices. Moreover, the deviations from the K41 theory of the structure functions' exponents reveal that the anomalous scaling exhibits a sy…
Heavy inertial particles transported by a turbulent flow are shown to concentrate in the regions where an advected passive scalar, such as temperature, displays very strong front-like discontinuities. This novel effect is responsible for extremely high levels of fluctuations for the passive field sampled by the particles that impacts the heat fluxes exchanged between the particles and the surrounding fluid. Instantaneous and averaged heat fluxes are shown to follow strongly intermittent statistics and anomalous scaling laws.
The computational cost of fluid simulations increases rapidly with grid resolution. This has given a hard limit on the ability of simulations to accurately resolve small scale features of complex flows. Here we use a machine learning approach to learn a numerical discretization that retains high accuracy even when the solution is under-resolved with classical methods. We apply this approach to passive scalar advection in a two-dimensional turbulent flow. The method maintains the same accuracy as traditional high-order flux-limited advection solvers, while using 4x lower grid resolution in each…
We perform direct numerical simulations of wall sheared Rayleigh-Bénard (RB) convection for Rayleigh numbers up to $Ra=10^8$, Prandtl number unity, and wall shear Reynolds numbers up to $Re_w=10000$. Using the Monin-Obukhov length $L_{MO}$ we identify three different flow states, a buoyancy dominated regime ($L_{MO} \lesssim λ_θ$; with $λ_θ$ the thermal boundary layer thickness), a transitional regime ($0.5H \gtrsim L_{MO} \gtrsim λ_θ$; with $H$ the height of the domain), and a shear dominated regime ($L_{MO} \gtrsim 0.5H$). In the buoyancy dominated regime the flow dynamics are similar to tha…
We study how helicity affects the spectrum of a passive scalar in rotating turbulent flows, using numerical simulations of turbulent flows with or without rotation, and with or without injection of helicity. Scaling laws for energy and passive scalar spectra in the direction perpendicular to the rotation axis differ in rotating helical flows from the ones found in the non-helical case, with the spectrum of passive scalar variance in the former case being shallower than in the latter. A simple phenomenological model that links the effects of helicity on the energy spectrum with the passive scal…
We use direct numerical simulations to compute turbulent transport coefficients for passive scalars in turbulent rotating flows. Effective diffusion coefficients in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the rotations axis are obtained by studying the diffusion of an imposed initial profile for the passive scalar, and calculated by measuring the scalar average concentration and average spatial flux as a function of time. The Rossby and Schmidt numbers are varied to quantify their effect on the effective diffusion. It is find that rotation reduces scalar diffusivity in the perpendicular d…
We use direct numerical simulations to compute structure functions, scaling exponents, probability density functions and turbulent transport coefficients of passive scalars in turbulent rotating helical and non-helical flows. We show that helicity affects the inertial range scaling of the velocity and of the passive scalar when rotation is present, with a spectral law consistent with $\sim k_{\perp}^{-1.4}$ for the passive scalar variance spectrum. This scaling law is consistent with the phenomenological argument presented in \cite{imazio2011} for rotating non-helical flows, wich states that i…
The dynamics of a passive scalar plume in a turbulent boundary layer is experimentally investigated via vertical turbulent transport time-series. Data are acquired in a rough-wall turbulent boundary layer that develops in a recirculating wind tunnel set-up. Two source sizes in an elevated position are considered in order to investigate the influence of the emission conditions on the plume dynamics. The analysis is focused on the effects of the meandering motion and the relative dispersion. First, classical statistics are investigated. We found that (in accordance with previous studies) the mea…
Spontaneous emergence of periodic oscillations due to self-organization is ubiquitous in turbulent flows. The emergence of such oscillatory instabilities in turbulent fluid mechanical systems is often studied in different system-specific frameworks. We uncover the existence of a universal scaling behaviour during self-organization in turbulent flows leading to oscillatory instability. Our experiments show that the spectral amplitude of the dominant mode of oscillations scales inversely with the Hurst exponent of a fluctuating state variable following an inverse power law relation. Interestingl…
A novel approach to identify internal interfacial layers, or IILs, in wall-bounded turbulent flows is proposed. Using a Fuzzy Cluster Method (FCM) on the streamwise velocity component, a unique and unambiguous grouping of the Uniform Momentum Zones is achieved, thus allowing the identification of the IILs. The approach overcomes some of the key limitations of the histogram-based IIL identification methods. The method is insensitive to the streamwise domain length, can be used on inhomogeneous grids, uses all the available flow field data, is trivially extended to three dimensions, and does not…
We present results of direct numerical simulations of passive scalar advection and diffusion in turbulent rotating flows. Scaling laws and the development of anisotropy are studied in spectral space, and in real space using an axisymmetric decomposition of velocity and passive scalar structure functions. The passive scalar is more anisotropic than the velocity field, and its power spectrum follows a spectral law consistent with $\sim k_\perp^{-3/2}$. This scaling is explained with phenomenological arguments that consider the effect of rotation. Intermittency is characterized using scaling expo…
Passive scalars in turbulent channel flows are investigated as canonical problem for heat and mass transfer in turbulent boundary-layer flows. The one-dimensional turbulence model is used to numerically investigate the Schmidt and Reynolds number dependence of the scalar transfer to a wall due to fluctuating wall-normal transport. First, the model is calibrated for low-order velocity statistics. After that, we keep the model parameters fixed and investigate low-order passive scalar statistics for a relevant Schmidt and Reynolds number range. We show that the model consistently predicts the bou…
We analyse the flow organization of turbulent fountains in stratified media under different conditions, using three-dimensional finite-time Lyapunov exponents. The dominant Lagrangian coherent structures responsible for the transport barriers in three different configurations suggest a self-similarity behaviour. After proposing a criterion for delimiting the boundary surface of the uprising fountain, we quantify the entrainment and re-entrainment rates under fully developed flow conditions using the proper coefficients. Finally, our analysis was applied to the Selective Inverted Sink, a techno…
We show that the decay of a passive scalar $θ$ advected by a random incompressible flow with zero correlation time in Batchelor limit can be mapped exactly to a certain quantum-mechanical system with a finite number of degrees of freedom. The Schroedinger equation is derived and its solution is analyzed for the case when at the beginning the scalar has Gaussian statistics with correlation function of the form $e^{-|x-y|^2}$. Any equal-time correlation function of the scalar can be expressed via the solution to the Schroedinger equation in a closed algebraic form. We find that the scalar is int…
We study material lines and passive vectors in a model of turbulent flow at infinite-Reynolds number, the Kraichnan-Kazantsev ensemble of velocities that are white-noise in time and rough (Hoelder continuous) in space. It is argued that the phenomenon of ``spontaneous stochasticity'' generalizes to material lines and that conservation of circulations generalizes to a ``martingale property'' of the stochastic process of lines.
A generalized logarithmic law for high-order moments of passive scalars is proposed for turbulent boundary layers. This law is analogous to the generalized log law that has been proposed for high-order moments of the turbulent longitudinal velocity and is derived by combining the random sweeping decorrelation hypothesis with a spectral model informed by the attached eddy hypothesis. The proposed theory predicts that the high-order moments of passive scalar fluctuations within the inertial sublayer will vary logarithmically with wall-normal distance ($z$). The proposed theory is evaluated using…
First, we make a revision of the up-to-date Passive Scalar Fields properties: also, the refractive index is among them. Afterwards, we formulated the properties that make the family of `isotropic' fractional Brownian motion (with parameter H) a good candidate to simulate the turbulent refractive index. Moreover, we obtained its fractal dimension which matches the estimated by Constantin for passive scalar, and thus the parameter H determines the state of the turbulence. Next, using a path integral velocity representation, with the Markovian model, to calculate the effects of the turbulence ove…
We present an algebraic model for turbulent scalar-flux vector that stems from tensor representation theory. The resulting closure contains direct dependence on mean velocity gradients and on frame rotation tensor that accounts for Coriolis effects. Model coefficients are determined from Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) data of homogeneous shear flows subjected to arbitrary mean scalar gradient orientations. This type of tuning process renders the proposed model to be objective towards inhomogeneous applications. Model performance is evaluated in several heated channel flows in both stationa…
We consider advection of a passive scalar theta(t,r) by an incompressible large-scale turbulent flow. In the framework of the Kraichnan model the whole PDF's (probability distribution functions) for the single-point statistics of theta and for the passive scalar difference theta(r_1)-theta(r_2) (for separations r_1-r_2 lying in the convective interval) are found.
We perform rescaled range analysis upon the signals measured by Dual Particle Dynamical Analyzer in gas-liquid two-phase turbulent jets. A novel rescaled range analysis is proposed to investigate these unevenly sampled signals. The Hurst exponents of velocity and other passive scalars in the bulk of spray are obtained to be 0.59$\pm $0.02 and the fractal dimension is hence 1.41$\pm $ 0.02, which are in remarkable agreement with and much more precise than previous results. These scaling exponents are found to be independent of the configuration and dimensions of the nozzle and the fluid flows. …
Direct numerical simulation of a turbulent channel flow with heat transfer was performed at very low Reynolds numbers. Two different thermal boundary conditions were studied, and temperature was considered as a passive scalar. The computations were carried out with huge computational boxes (up to 327.7 x 2 x 128 in the streamwise, wall-normal, and spanwise directions, respectively). The emphases of this paper are to investigate the large-scale structure (puff) in the intermittent-turbulent flow including the scalar fields and to provide the values of the transitional and critical Reynolds numb…
