Although nonsymmorphic symmetry protects $\mathbb{Z}_4$ topology for Hermitian systems, non-Hermitian topological phenomena induced by such a unique topological structure remain elusive. In this paper, we elucidate that systems with glide symmetry exhibit non-Hermitian skin effects (NHSE) characterized by $\mathbb{Z}_4$ topology. Specifically, numerically analyzing a two-dimensional toy model, we demonstrate that the $\mathbb{Z}_4$ topology induces the NHSE when the topological invariant takes $ν=1,2$. Furthermore, our numerical analysis demonstrates that the NHSE is destroyed by perturbations preserving the relevant symmetry when the $\mathbb{Z}_4$-invariant takes $ν=4$.
We study Floquet topological phases in periodically driven systems that are protected by "time glide symmetry", a combination of reflection and half time period translation. Time glide symmetry is an analog of glide symmetry with partial time translation replacing the partial space translation, and hence, is an intrinsically dynamical symmetry which may be engineered in periodically driven systems by exploiting the controllability of driving. We present lattice models of time glide symmetric Floquet topological insulators in two and three dimensions. The topological numbers characterizing thos…
We study the topological crystalline insulator phase protected by the glide symmetry, which is characterized by the Z2 topological number. In the present paper, we derive a formula for the Z2 topological invariant protected by glide symmetry in a nonprimitive lattice, from that in a primitive lattice. We establish a formula for the glide-Z2 invariant for the space group No. 9 with glide symmetry in the base-centered lattice, by folding the Brillouin zone into that of the primitive lattice where the formula for the glide-Z2 invariant is known. The formula is written in terms of integrals of the…
Understanding crystal shapes is a fundamental subject in surface science. It is now well studied how chemical bondings determine crystal shapes via dependence of surface energies on surface orientations. Meanwhile, discoveries of topological materials have led us to a new paradigm in surface science, and one can expect that topological surface states may affect surface energies and crystal facets in an unconventional way. Here we show that the surface energy of glide-symmetric topological crystalline insulators (TCI) depends on the surface orientation in a singular way via the parity of the Mi…
The Benalcazar-Bernevig-Hughes(BBH) model is one of the most representative higher-order topological insulators with different bulk-edge correspondence comparing conventional topological states. In this work, we propose to realize a couple-BBH model with glide reflection symmetry by coupling two topologically distinct BBH models. Such a system gives rise to intriguing properties beyond the traditional BBH model. A topological phase transition from higher-order topological phase to a semimetal has been predicted in this system. Furthermore, the band crossing points and nodal ring protected by g…
Non-Hermitian systems with mirror symmetry may exhibit mirror skin effect which is the extreme sensitivity of the spectrum and eigenstates on the boundary condition due to the non-Hermitian topology protected by mirror symmetry. In this paper, we report that the mirror skin effect survives even against disorder which breaks the mirror symmetry. Specifically, we demonstrate the robustness of the skin effect by employing the neural network which systematically predicts the presence/absence of the skin modes, a large number of localized states around the edge. The trained neural network detects s…
We study positions of chiral hinge states in higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs) with inversion symmetry. First, we exhaust all possible configurations of the hinge states in the HOTIs in all type-I magnetic space groups with inversion symmetry by studying dependence of the sign of the surface Dirac mass on surface orientations. In particular, in the presence of glide symmetry, for particular surface orientations, the surface Dirac mass changes sign by changing the surface terminations. By applying this result to a layered antiferromagnet (AFM), we find a difference in the hinge states…
A unique feature of non-Hermitian systems is the skin effect, which is the extreme sensitivity to the boundary conditions. Here, we reveal that the skin effect originates from intrinsic non-Hermitian topology. Such a topological origin not merely explains the universal feature of the known skin effect, but also leads to new types of the skin effects---symmetry-protected skin effects. In particular, we discover the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ skin effect protected by time-reversal symmetry. On the basis of topological classification, we also discuss possible other skin effects in arbitrary dimensions. Our…
We report the realization of novel symmetry-protected Dirac fermions in a surface-doped two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor, black phosphorus. The widely tunable band gap of black phosphorus by the surface Stark effect is employed to achieve a surprisingly large band inversion up to ~0.6 eV. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra directly reveal the pair creation of Dirac points and their moving along the axis of the glide-mirror symmetry. Unlike graphene, the Dirac point of black phosphorus is stable, as protected by spacetime inversion symmetry, even in the presence of spin-orbi…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of layered ternary telluride Ta3SiTe6 which is predicted to host nodal lines associated with nonsymmorphic crystal symmetry. We found that the energy bands in the valence-band region show Dirac-like dispersions which present a band degeneracy at the R point of the bulk orthorhombic Brillouin zone. This band degeneracy extends one-dimensionally along the whole SR high-symmetry line, forming the nodal lines protected by the glide mirror symmetry of the crystal. We also observed a small band splitting near EF which supports the existence…
Nonsymmoprhic symmetries, such as screw rotations or glide reflections, can enforce band crossings within high-symmetry lines or planes of the Brillouin zone. When these band degeneracies are close to the Fermi energy, they can give rise to a number of unusual phenomena: e.g., anomalous magnetoelectric responses, transverse Hall currents, and exotic surface states. In this paper, we present a comprehensive classification of such nonsymmorphic band crossings in trigonal materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. We find that in trigonal systems there are two different types of nonsymmorphic ban…
The co-existence of spatial and non-spatial symmetries together with appropriate commutation/anticommutation relations between them can give rise to static higher-order topological phases, which host gapless boundary modes of co-dimension higher than one. Alternatively, space-time symmetries in a Floquet system can also lead to anomalous Floquet boundary modes of higher co-dimensions, presumably with alterations in the commutation/anticommutation relations with respect to non-spatial symmetries. We show how a coherently excited phonon mode can be used to promote a spatial symmetry with which t…
The non-Hermitian skin effect is a unique feature of non-Hermitian systems, in which an extensive number of boundary modes appear under the open boundary conditions. Here, we discover higher-order counterparts of the non-Hermitian skin effect that exhibit new boundary physics. In two-dimensional systems with the system size $L \times L$, while the conventional (first-order) skin effect accompanies $O\,( L^{2} )$ skin modes, the second-order skin effect accompanies $O\,( L )$ corner skin modes. This also contrasts with Hermitian second-order topological insulators, in which only $O\,( 1 )$ corn…
Intensive studies for more than three decades have elucidated multiple superconducting phases and odd-parity Cooper pairs in a heavy fermion superconductor UPt$_3$. We identify a time-reversal invariant superconducting phase of UPt$_3$ as a recently proposed topological nonsymmorphic superconductivity. Combining the band structure of UPt$_3$, order parameter of $E_{\rm 2u}$ representation allowed by $P6_3/mmc$ space group symmetry, and topological classification by $K$-theory, we demonstrate the nontrivial $Z_2$-invariant of three-dimensional DIII class enriched by glide symmetry. Correspondin…
Recently, it was established that there exists a direct relation between the non-Hermitian skin effects, -strong dependence of spectra on boundary conditions for non-Hermitian Hamiltonians-, and boundary zero modes for Hermitian topological insulators. On the other hand, in terms of the spectral theory, the skin effects can also be interpreted as instability of spectra for nonnormal (non-Hermitian) Hamiltonians. Applying the latter interpretation to the former relation, we develop a theory of zero modes with quantum anomaly for general Hermitian lattice systems. Our theory is applicable to a w…
Constructing new topological phases is very important in both Hermitian and non-Hermitian systems because of their potential applications. Here we propose theoretically and demonstrate a general scheme experimentally to construct Nth power root (NPR) topological phases. Such a scheme is not only suitable for Hermitian systems, but also non-Hermitian systems. It is found that the robust degree of edge state in the Hermitian system becomes stronger and stronger with the increase of N. It tends to be a strongly surface localized form when N is large enough. In the non-Hermitian system, the skin e…
Symmetry-protected spectral topology in non-Hermitian systems has interesting manifestations such as dynamically anomalous chiral currents and skin effect. We study the interplay between symmetries and disorder in a paradigmatic model for spectral topology - the non-reciprocal Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We numerically study the effect of disorder in on-site and non-reciprocal hopping terms. Using a real-space winding number, we investigate the impact of disorder on the spectral topology and the anomalous chiral modes under periodic boundary conditions. We discover a remarkable robustness of c…
The non-Hermitian skin effect can arise in materials that have asymmetric hoppings between atoms or resonating units, which makes the bulk eigenspectrum sensitive to boundary conditions. When skin effect emerges, eigenstates in the bulk continuum can become localized on the edges, making the distinction between edge and bulk states challenging. We establish the bulk-boundary correspondence for a Chern insulator model with non-Hermitian skin effect by combining two approaches ("non-Bloch" approach and "biorthogonal" approach). Both approaches can suppress the skin effect but they are based on d…
Topological phase transitions, which have fascinated generations of physicists, are always demarcated by gap closures. In this work, we propose very simple 2D photonic crystal lattices with gap closure points, i.e. band degeneracies protected by nonsymmorphic symmetry. Our photonic structures are relatively easy to fabricate, consisting of two inequivalent dielectric cylinders per unit cell. Along high symmetry directions, they exhibit line degeneracies protected by glide reflection symmetry, which we explicitly demonstrate for $pg,pmg, pgg$ and $p4g$ nonsymmorphic groups. In the presence of ti…
It was known that for non-Hermitian topological systems due to the non-Hermitian skin effect, the bulk-edge correspondence is broken down. In this paper, by using one-dimensional Su-SchriefferHeeger model and two-dimensional (deformed) Qi-Wu-Zhang model as examples, we focus on a special type of non-Hermitian topological system without non-Hermitian skin effect-topological systems under non-Hermitian similarity transformation. In these non-Hermitian systems, the defective edge states and the breakdown of bulk-edge correspondence are discovered. To characterize the topological properties, we in…
The spectral and dynamical properties of dissipative quantum systems, as modeled by a damped oscillator in the Fock space, are investigated from a topological point of view. Unlike a physical lattice system that is naturally under the open boundary condition, the bounded-from-below nature of the Fock space offers a unique setting for understanding and verifying non-Hermitian skin modes under semi-infinity boundary conditions that are elusive in actual physical lattices. A topological characterization based on the complex spectra of the Liouvillian superoperator is proposed and the associated c…
Topological classification in our previous paper [K. Shiozaki and M. Sato, Phys. Rev. B ${\bf 90}$, 165114 (2014)] is extended to nonsymmorphic crystalline insulators and superconductors. Using the twisted equivariant $K$-theory, we complete the classification of topological crystalline insulators and superconductors in the presence of additional order-two nonsymmorphic space group symmetries. The order-two nonsymmorphic space groups include half lattice translation with $Z_2$ flip, glide, two-fold screw, and their magnetic space groups. We find that the topological periodic table shows modulo…
A modified periodic boundary condition adequate for non-hermitian topological systems is proposed. Under this boundary condition a topological number characterizing the system is defined in the same way as in the corresponding hermitian system and hence, at the cost of introducing an additional parameter that characterizes the non-hermitian skin effect, the idea of bulk-edge correspondence in the hermitian limit can be applied almost as it is. We develop this framework through the analysis of a non-hermitian SSH model with chiral symmetry, and prove the bulk-edge correspondence in a generalize…
The non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) in non-Hermitian lattice systems depicts the exponential localization of eigenstates at system's boundaries. It has led to a number of counter-intuitive phenomena and challenged our understanding of bulk-boundary correspondence in topological systems. This work aims to investigate how the NHSE localization and topological localization of in-gap edge states compete with each other, with several representative static and periodically driven 1D models, whose topological properties are protected by different symmetries. The emerging insight is that at critical …

In previous studies, the topological invariants of 1D non-Hermitian systems have been defined in open boundary condition (OBC) to satisfy the bulk-boundary correspondence. The extreme sensitivity of bulk energy spectra to boundary conditions has been attributed to the breakdown of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence based on the topological invariants defined under periodic boundary condition (PBC). Here we propose non-Hermitian many-body polarization as a topological invariant for 1D non-Hermitian systems defined in PBC, which satisfies the bulk-boundary correspondence. Employing ma…
Topological phases of Hermitian systems are known to exhibit intriguing properties such as the presence of robust boundary states and the famed bulk-boundary correspondence. These features can change drastically for their non-Hermitian generalizations, as exemplified by a general breakdown of bulk-boundary correspondence and a localization of all states at the boundary, termed the non-Hermitian skin effect. In this article, we present a completely analytical unifying framework for studying these systems using generalized transfer matrices -- a real-space approach suitable for systems with peri…
We consider a class of one-dimensional non-Hermitian models with a special type of a chiral symmetry which is related to pseudo-Hermiticity. We show that the topology of a Hamiltonian belonging to this symmetry class is determined by a hidden Chern number described by an effective 2D Hermitian Hamiltonian $H^{\rm eff} (k, η)$, where $η$ is the imaginary part of the energy. This Chern number manifests itself as topologically protected in-gap end states at zero real part of the energy. We show that the bulk-boundary correspondence coming from the hidden Chern number is robust and immune to non-H…
Alternating current RLC electric circuits form an accessible and highly tunable platform simulating Hermitian as well as non-Hermitian (nH) quantum systems. We propose here a circuit realization of nH Dirac and Weyl Hamiltonians subject to time-reversal invariant pseudo-magnetic field, enabling the exploration of novel nH physics. We identify the low-energy physics with a generic real energy spectrum from the nH Landau quantization of exceptional points and rings, which can avoid the nH skin effect and provides a physical example of a quasiparticle moving in the complex plane. Realistic detect…
Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians are generally sensitive to boundary conditions, and their spectra and wave functions under open boundary conditions are not necessarily predicted by the Bloch band theory for periodic boundary conditions. To elucidate such a non-Bloch feature, recent works have developed a non-Bloch band theory that works even under arbitrary boundary conditions. Here, it is demonstrated that the standard non-Bloch band theory breaks down in the symplectic class, in which non-Hermitian Hamiltonians exhibit Kramers degeneracy because of reciprocity. Instead, a modified non-Bloch band …

The Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem is a fundamental theorem on the realization of chiral fermions in static lattice systems in high-energy and condensed matter physics. Here we extend the theorem in dynamical systems, which include the original Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem in the static limit. In contrast to the original theorem, which is a no-go theorem for bulk chiral fermions, the new theorem permits them due to bulk topology intrinsic to dynamical systems. The theorem is based on duality enabling a unified treatment of periodically driven systems and non-Hermitian ones. We also present the extended …
We investigate the topological nodal structure of three-dimensional (3D) ZrTe$_5$ driven by Zeeman splitting as a function of the direction of external magnetic (B) field by using a Wannier-function-based tight-binding (WFTB) model obtained from first-principles calculations. It is known that small external stimuli can drive 3D ZrTe$_5$ into different topological phases including Dirac semimetal. In order to emphasize the effect of Zeeman splitting, we consider 3D ZrTe$_5$ in a strong TI phase with a small band gap. With Zeeman splitting greater than the band gap, the WFTB model suggests that …
