We present the stellar value-added catalogue based on the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Early Data Release. The catalogue contains radial velocity and stellar parameter measurements for $\simeq$ 400,000 unique stars observed during commissioning and survey validation by DESI. These observations were made under conditions similar to the Milky Way Survey (MWS) currently carried out by DESI but also include multiple specially targeted fields, such as those containing well-studied dwarf galaxies and stellar streams. The majority of observed stars have $16<r<20$ with a median signal-to-noise ratio in the spectra of $\sim$ 20. In the paper, we describe the structure of the catalogue, give an overview of different target classes observed, as well as provide recipes for selecting clean stellar samples. We validate the catalogue using external high-resolution measurements and show that radial velocities, surface gravities, and iron abundances determined by DESI are accurate to 1 km/s, $0.3$ dex and $\sim$ 0.15 dex respectively. We also demonstrate possible uses of the catalogue for chemo-dynamical studies of the Milky Way stellar halo and Draco dwarf spheroidal. The value-added catalogue described in this paper is the very first DESI MWS catalogue. The next DESI data release, expected in less than a year, will add the data from the first year of DESI survey operations and will contain approximately 4 million stars, along with significant processing improvements.
We present a panoramic map of the stellar streams of the Milky Way based upon astrometric and photometric measurements from the Gaia DR2 catalogue. In this first contribution, we concentrate on the halo at heliocentric distances beyond 5 kpc, and at Galactic latitudes $|b|>30°$, using the STREAMFINDER algorithm to detect structures along plausible orbits that are consistent with the Gaia proper motion measurements. We find a rich network of criss-crossing streams in the halo. Some of these structures were previously-known, several are new discoveries, but others are potentially artefacts of th…
We present the results of a large-scale proper motion study of the central ~36'x16' of the Milky Way, based on our high angular resolution GALACTICNUCLEUS survey (epoch 2015) combined with the HST Paschen-alpha survey (epoch 2008). Our catalogue contains roughly 80,000 stars, an unprecedented kinematic data set for this region. We describe the data analysis and the preparation of the proper motion catalogue. We verify the catalogue by comparing our results with measurements from previous work and data. We provide a preliminary analysis of the kinematics of the studied region. Foreground stars …
We have determined masses, stellar mass functions and structural parameters of 112 Milky Way globular clusters by fitting a large set of N-body simulations to their velocity dispersion and surface density profiles. The velocity dispersion profiles were calculated based on a combination of more than 15,000 high-precision radial velocities which we derived from archival ESO/VLT and Keck spectra together with ~20,000 published radial velocities from the literature. Our fits also include the stellar mass functions of the globular clusters, which are available for 47 clusters in our sample, allowin…
Global survey of star clusters in the Milky Way II. The catalogue of basic parameters

APOGEE and GALAH are two high resolution multi-object spectroscopic surveys that provide fundamental stellar parameters and multiple elemental abundance estimates for about half a million stars in the Milky Way. Both surveys observe in different wavelength regimes and use different data reduction pipelines leading to significant offsets and trends in stellar parameters and abundances for the common stars observed in both surveys. Such systematic differences/offsets in stellar parameters and abundances make it difficult to effectively utilise them to investigate Galactic abundance trends in spi…
Citizen science has helped astronomers comb through large data sets to identify patterns and objects that are not easily found through automated processes. The Milky Way Project (MWP), a citizen science initiative on the Zooniverse platform, presents internet users with infrared (IR) images from Spitzer Space Telescope Galactic plane surveys. MWP volunteers make classification drawings on the images to identify targeted classes of astronomical objects. We present the MWP second data release (DR2) and an updated data reduction pipeline written in Python. We aggregate ${\sim}3$ million classific…
Selection functions are vital for understanding the observational biases of spectroscopic surveys. With the wide variety of multi-object spectrographs currently in operation and becoming available soon, we require easily generalisable methods for determining the selection functions of these surveys. Previous work, however, has largely been focused on generating individual, tailored selection functions for every data release of each survey. Moreover, no methods for combining these selection functions to be used for joint catalogues have been developed. We have developed a Poisson likelihood est…
We introduce a method to infer the vertical distribution of stars in the Milky Way using a Poisson likelihood function, with a view to applying our method to the Gaia catalogue. We show how to account for the sample selection function and for parallax measurement uncertainties. Our method is validated against a simulated sample drawn from a model with two exponential discs and a power-law halo profile. A mock Gaia sample is generated using the Gaia astrometry selection function, whilst realistic parallax uncertainties are drawn from the Gaia Astrometric Spread Function. The model is fit to the…
We use data from the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) and the Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution catalogue (TGAS) to compute the velocity fields yielded by the radial (VR), azimuthal (Vphi) and vertical (Vz) components of associated Galactocentric velocity. We search in particular for variation in all three velocity components with distance above and below the disc midplane, as well as how each component of Vz (line-of-sight and tangential velocity projections) modifies the obtained vertical structure. To study the dependence of velocity on proper motion and distance we use two main samples: a R…
What role does Galactic structure play in star formation? We have used the Herschel Hi-GAL compact-clump catalogue to examine trends in evolutionary stage over large spatial scales in the inner Galaxy. We examine the relationship between the fraction of clumps with embedded star formation (the star-forming fraction, or SFF) and other measures of star-formation activity. Based on a positive correlation between SFF and evolutionary indicators such as the luminosity-to-mass ratio, we assert that the SFF principally traces the average evolutionary state of a sample and must depend on the local fra…
The structure and evolution of the spiral arms of our Milky Way are basic but long-standing questions in astronomy. In particular, the lifetime of spiral arms is still a puzzle and has not been well constrained from observations. In this work, we aim to inspect these issues using a large catalogue of open clusters. We compiled a catalogue of 3794 open clusters based on Gaia EDR3. A majority of these clusters have accurately determined parallaxes, proper motions, and radial velocities. The age parameters for these open clusters are collected from references or calculated in this work. In order …
The high extinction and extreme source crowding of the central regions of the Milky Way are serious obstacles to the study of the structure and stellar population of the Galactic centre (GC). Existing surveys that cover the GC region (2MASS, UKIDSS, VVV, SIRIUS) do not have the necessary high angular resolution. Therefore, a high-angular-resolution survey in the near infrared is crucial to improve the state of the art. Here, we present the GALACTICNUCLEUS catalogue, a near infrared $JHK_s$ high-angular-resolution ($0.2''$) survey of the nuclear bulge of the Milky Way. We explain in detail the …
Many open clusters listed in modern catalogues were initially reported by visual astronomers as apparent overdensities of bright stars. As observational techniques and analysis methods continue to improve, some of them have been shown to be chance alignments of stars and not true clusters. Recent publications have provided membership lists for over a thousand clusters, however, many nearby objects listed in the literature have so far evaded detection. We aim to update the Gaia DR2 cluster census by performing membership determinations for known clusters that had been missed by previous studies…
The {\it Gaia} mission has provided the largest catalogue ever of sources with tangential velocity information. However, using this catalogue for dynamical studies is difficult because most of the stars lack line-of-sight velocity measurements. Recently, we presented a selection of $\sim 10^7$ halo stars with accurate distances that have been selected based on their photometry and proper motions. Using this sample, we model the tail of the velocity distribution with a power-law distribution, a commonly used approach first established by \cite{Leonard1990THESPEED}. For the first time ever we us…
New-generation spectroscopic surveys of the Milky Way plane have been revealing the structure of the interstellar medium, allowing the simultaneous study of dense structures from single star-forming objects or systems to entire spiral arms. We present the catalogue of molecular clouds extracted from the $^{13}$CO(1-0) data cubes of the Forgotten Quadrant Survey, which mapped the Galactic plane in the range 220°<l<240°, and -2.5°<b<0°in $^{12}$CO(1-0) and $^{13}$CO(1-0).The catalogue contains 87 molecular clouds for which the main physical parameters such as area, mass, distance, velocity dispe…
We study the $\textit{Pontus}$ structure -- a recently discovered merger that brought in $\sim7$ globular clusters in the course of the hierarchical build-up of the Milky Way's halo. Here, we analyse the stellar population of $\textit{Pontus}$ and examine (1) its phase-space distribution using the ESA/$\textit{Gaia}$ dataset, (2) its metallicity and chemical abundances (i.e., [Fe/H], [$α$/Fe], [Mg/Fe], [Al/Fe]) using the spectroscopic catalogue of APOGEE DR17, and (3) the colour-magnitude diagram that shows interesting features, including a possibly double horizontal branch and a small populat…
The second $Gaia$ Data Release (DR2) contains astrometric and photometric data for more than 1.6 billion objects with mean $Gaia$ $G$ magnitude $<$20.7, including many Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in different evolutionary stages. In order to explore the YSO population of the Milky Way, we combined the $Gaia$ DR2 database with WISE and Planck measurements and made an all-sky probabilistic catalogue of YSOs using machine learning techniques, such as Support Vector Machines, Random Forests, or Neural Networks. Our input catalogue contains 103 million objects from the DR2xAllWISE cross-match tabl…
Identification of molecular clouds in emission maps: a comparison between methods in the \ce{^{13}CO}/\ce{C^{18}O} ($J=3-2$) Heterodyne Inner Milky Way Plane Survey
Orbital parameters, such as eccentricity and maximum vertical excursion, of stars in the Milky Way are an important tool for understanding its dynamics and evolution, but calculation of such parameters usually relies on computationally-expensive numerical orbit integration. We present and test a fast method for estimating these parameters using an application of the Stäckel fudge, used previously for the estimation of action-angle variables. We show that the method is highly accurate, to a level of $<1\%$ in eccentricity, over a large range of relevant orbits and in different Milky Way-like po…
We report on the search for overall kinematical or structural conditions that have allowed some Milky Way globular clusters to presently develop tidal tails. For this purpose, we build a comprehensive catalogue of globular clusters with studies focused on their outermost regions and classified them in three categories: those with observed tidal tails, those with extra-tidal features different from tidal tails and those without any signature of extended stellar density profiles. When exploring different kinematical and structural parameter spaces, we found that globular clusters - irrespective …
Based on astrometric data from Gaia DR2, we employ an unsupervised machine learning method to blindly search for open star clusters in the Milky Way within the Galactic latitude range of |b| < 20 degrees. In addition to 2,080 known clusters, 74 new open cluster candidates are found. In this work, we present the positions, apparent radii, parallaxes, proper motions and member stars of these candidates (https://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr/ftp/vizier.submit//new_OC/). Meanwhile, to obtain the physical parameters of each candidate cluster, stellar isochrones are fit to the photometric data. The results sh…
Context: OH masers trace diverse physical processes, from the expanding envelopes around evolved stars to star-forming regions or supernovae remnants. Aims: We identify the ground-state OH masers at 18cm wavelength in the area covered by ``The HI/OH/Recombination line survey of the Milky Way (THOR)''. We present a catalogue of all OH maser features and their possible associated environments. Methods: The THOR survey covers longitude and latitude ranges of 14.3<l<66.8 and b<1.25 deg. All OH ground state lines at 1612, 1665, 1667 and 1720MHz have been observed, employing the Very Large Array. Th…
We review the implications of the Gaia Data Release 2 catalogue for studying the dynamics of Milky Way globular clusters, focusing on two separate topics. The first one is the analysis of the full 6-dimensional phase-space distribution of the entire population of Milky Way globular clusters: their mean proper motions (PM) can be measured with an exquisite precision (down to 0.05 mas/yr, including systematic errors). Using these data, and a suitable ansatz for the steady-state distribution function (DF) of the cluster population, we then determine simultaneously the best-fit parameters of this …
Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) are amongst the fastest objects in our Milky Way. These stars are predicted to come from the Galactic center (GC) and travel along unbound orbits across the Galaxy. In the coming years, the ESA satellite Gaia will provide the most complete and accurate catalogue of the Milky Way, with full astrometric parameters for more than $1$ billion stars. In this paper, we present the expected sample size and properties (mass, magnitude, spatial, velocity distributions) of HVSs in the Gaia stellar catalogue. We build three Gaia mock catalogues of HVSs anchored to current observ…
RR Lyrae variable stars have long been reliable standard candles used to discern structure in the Local Group. With this in mind, we present a routine to identify groupings containing a statistically significant number of RR Lyrae variables in the Milky Way environment. RR Lyrae variable groupings, or substructures, with potential Galactic archaeology applications are found using a forest of agglomerative, hierarchical clustering trees, whose leaves are Milky Way RR Lyrae variables. Each grouping is validated by ensuring that the internal RR Lyrae variable proper motions are sufficiently corre…
We present the results of the kinematic investigations carried out with the use of spatial velocities of red giants and sub-giants containing in the $Gaia$~EDR3 catalogue. The twelve kinematic parameters of the Ogorodnikov--Milne model have been derived for stellar systems with radii 0.5 and 1.0 kpc, located along the direction the Galactic center -- the Sun -- the Galactic anticenter within the range of Galactocentric distances $R$ 0--8--16~kpc. By combining some of the local parameters the information related to the Galaxy as a whole has been received in the distance range 4--12~kpc, in part…
The formation of the Galactic disc is an enthusiastically debated issue. Numerous studies and models seek to identify the dominant physical process(es) that shaped its observed properties. Taking advantage of the improved coverage of the inner Milky Way provided by the SDSS DR16 APOGEE catalogue and of the ages published in the APOGEE-AstroNN Value Added Catalogue (VAC), we examine the radial evolution of the chemical and age properties of the Galactic stellar disc, with the aim to better constrain its formation. Using a sample of 199,307 giant stars with precise APOGEE abundances and APOGEE-a…
