Deconfined quantum critical points are intriguing transition points not predicted by the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson symmetry-breaking paradigm which are usually identified by the appearance of a continuous phase transition between locally ordered phases. Here, we reveal the presence of deconfined quantum critical points with unexplored properties. Contrary to previously known examples, we show that the phenomenon of spin-charge separation peculiar to interacting low dimensional fermions can allow for the appearance of partially gapped deconfined quantum critical points. We first infer this point by performing a field theory analysis of generic one-dimensional fermionic systems in the low energy limit. Subsequently, we derive a microscopic model where phase transitions between different locally ordered phases can take place. Here, by performing a numerical analysis we explicitly derive, among others, the gaps, local order parameters and correlation functions behavior, supporting the presence of partially gapped deconfined quantum critical points. Our results thus provide new interesting insights on the widely investigated topic of quantum phase transitions.
We investigate the quantum phase transition from antiferromagnetism ($AF$) to algebraic spin liquid ($ASL$). {\it We propose that spin 1/2 fermionic spinons in the $ASL$ fractionalize into spin 1/2 bosonic spinons and spinless fermions at the quantum critical point ($QCP$) between the $AF$ and the $ASL$}. Condensation of the bosonic spinons leads to the $AF$, where the condensed bosonic spinons are confined with the spinless fermions to form the fermionic spinons. These fermionic spinons are also confined to make antiferromagnons as elementary excitations in the $AF$. {\it Approaching the $QCP…
Deconfined quantum criticality with emergent SO(5) symmetry in correlated systems remains elusive. Here, by performing numerically-exact state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we show convincing evidences of deconfined quantum critical points (DQCP) between antiferromagnetic and valence-bond-solid phases in the extended Hubbard model of fermions on the honeycomb lattice with large system sizes. We further demonstrate evidences of the SO(5) symmetry at the DQCP. It is important to note that the critical exponents obtained by finite-size scaling at the DQCP here are consistent w…

Using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study a series of models of fermions coupled to quantum Ising spins on a square lattice with $N$ flavors of fermions per site for $N=1,2$ and $3$. The models have an extensive number of conserved quantities but are not integrable, and have rather rich phase diagrams consisting of several exotic phases and phase transitions that lie beyond Landau-Ginzburg paradigm. In particular, one of the prominent phase for $N>1$ corresponds to $2N$ gapless Dirac fermions coupled to an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field in its deconfined phase. However, unlike a con…
The interplay between lattice gauge theories and fermionic matter accounts for fundamental physical phenomena ranging from the deconfinement of quarks in particle physics to quantum spin liquid with fractionalized anyons and emergent gauge structures in condensed matter physics. However, except for certain limits (for instance large number of flavors of matter fields), analytical methods can provide few concrete results. Here we show that the problem of compact $U(1)$ lattice gauge theory coupled to fermionic matter in $(2+1)$D is possible to access via sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo si…
The one-band Hubbard model on the pyrochlore lattice contains an extended quantum spin-liquid phase formed from the manifold of singlet dimer coverings. We demonstrate that the massive and deconfined spinon excitations of this system have fermionic statistics. Holonic quasiparticles introduced by doping are also fermions and we explain the origin of this counterintuitive result.
This article overviews the recent developments in applying the idea of deconfined quantum criticality in condensed matter physics to understand quantum phase transitions among grand unified theories in high energy physics in the 4-dimensional spacetime. In particular, dictated by a mod 2 class nonperturbative global mixed gauge-gravitational anomaly, there can be a gapless deconfined quantum critical region between Georgi-Glashow and Pati-Salam models -- not only the Standard Model occurs as a neighbor phase, but also beyond the Standard Model phenomena (such as deconfined dark gauge force and…
We introduce a model of Dirac fermions in 2+1 dimensions with a semimetallic, a quantum spin-Hall insulating (QSHI), and an s-wave superconducting (SSC) phase. The phase diagram features a multicritical point at which all three phases meet as well as a QSHI-SSC deconfined critical point. The QSHI and SSC orders correspond to mutually anti-commuting mass terms of the Dirac Hamiltonian. Based on this algebraic property, SO(5) symmetric field theories have been put forward to describe both types of critical points. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we directly study the operator that rotates…
We introduce a frustrated spin 1/2 Hamiltonian which is an extension of the two dimensional $J_1 - J_2$ Heisenberg model. The ground states of this model are exactly obtained at a first order quantum phase transition between two regions with different valence bond solid order parameters. At this point, the low energy excitations are deconfined spinons and spin-charge separation occurs under doping in the limit of low concentration of holes. In addition, this point is characterized by the proliferation of topological defects that signal the emergence of $Z_2$ gauge symmetry.
Topological phases of matter are usually realized in deconfined phases of gauge theories. In this context, confined phases with strongly fluctuating gauge fields seem to be irrelevant to the physics of topological phases. For example, the low-energy theory of the two-dimensional (2D) toric code model (i.e. the deconfined phase of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory) is a $U(1)\times U(1)$ Chern-Simons theory in which gauge charges (i.e., $e$ and $m$ particles) are deconfined and the gauge fields are gapped, while the confined phase is topologically trivial. In this paper, we point out a new route to c…
We study the critical scaling and dynamical signatures of fractionalized excitations at two different deconfined quantum critical points (DQCPs) in an $S = 1/2$ spin chain by using the time evolution of infinite matrix product states. The scaling of the correlation functions and the dispersion of the conserved current correlations explicitly show the emergence of enhanced continuous symmetries at these DQCPs. The dynamical structure factors in several different channels reveal the development of deconfined fractionalized excitations at the DQCPs. Furthermore, we find an effective spin-charge s…
The deconfined quantum critical point (QCP), separating the Néel and valence bond solid phases in a 2D antiferromagnet, was proposed as an example of $2+1$D criticality fundamentally different from standard Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson-Fisher {criticality}. In this work we present multiple equivalent descriptions of deconfined QCPs, and use these to address the possibility of enlarged emergent symmetries in the low energy limit. The easy-plane deconfined QCP, besides its previously discussed self-duality, is dual to $N_f = 2$ fermionic quantum electrodynamics (QED), which has its own self-duality an…
Motivated by the physics of spin-orbital liquids, we study a model of interacting Dirac fermions on a bilayer honeycomb lattice at half filling, featuring an explicit global SO(3)$\times$U(1) symmetry. Using large-scale auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we locate two zero-temperature phase transitions as function of increasing interaction strength. First, we observe a continuous transition from the weakly-interacting semimetal to a different semimetallic phase in which the SO(3) symmetry is spontaneously broken and where two out of three Dirac cones acquire a mass gap. The…
The phase diagram of spin-3/2 fermionic cold atoms trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice is investigated at quarter filling (one atom per site) by means of large-scale numerical simulations. In full agreement with a recent low-energy approach, we find two phases with confined and deconfined Cooper pairs separated by an Ising quantum phase transition. The leading instability in the confined phase is an atomic-density wave with subdominant quartet superfluid instability made of four fermions. Finally, we reveal the existence of a bond-ordered Mott insulating phase in some part of the repu…
We consider relativistic U(1) gauge theories in 2+1 dimensions, with N_b species of complex bosons and N_f species of Dirac fermions at finite temperature. The quantum phase transition between the Higgs and Coulomb phases is described by a conformal field theory (CFT). At large N_b and N_f, but for arbitrary values of the ratio N_b/N_f, we present computations of various critical exponents and universal amplitudes for these CFTs. We make contact with the different spin-liquids, charge-liquids and deconfined critical points of quantum magnets that these field theories describe. We compute physi…
We introduce an exactly solvable SU(2) symmetric Kitaev model with exotic spin excitations. With time reversal symmetry (TRS), the ground state is a spin liquid with gapless or gapped spin-1 but fermionic excitations. When TRS is broken, the resulting spin liquid exhibits deconfined vortex excitations which carry spin-1/2 quantum number and obey non-Abelian statistics. We show that this SU(2) invariant non-Abelian spin liquid exhibits spin quantum Hall effect with quantized spin Hall conductivity σ^s_{xy}=\hbar/2π, and that the spin response is effectively described the SO(3) level-1 Chern-Sim…
We introduce a Hamiltonian coupling Majorana fermion degrees of freedom to a quantum dimer model. We argue that, in three dimensions, this model has deconfined quasiparticles supporting Majorana zero modes obeying nontrivial statistics. We introduce two effective field theory descriptions of this deconfined phase, in which the excitations have Coulomb interactions. A key feature of this system is the existence of topologically non-trivial fermionic excitations, called "Hopfions" because, in a suitable continuum limit of the dimer model, such excitations correspond to the Hopf map and are relat…
In this paper, we propose using the nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) with the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) term as a general description of deconfined quantum critical points that separate two spontaneously symmetry-breaking (SSB) phases in arbitrary dimensions. In particular, we discuss the suitable choice of the target space of the NLSM, which is in general the homogeneous space $G/K$, where $G$ is the UV symmetry and $K$ is generated by $\mathfrak{k}=\mathfrak{h}_1\cap \mathfrak{h}_2$, and $\mathfrak{h}_i$ is the Lie algebra of the unbroken symmetry in each SSB phase. With this specific target spac…
Continuous quantum phase transitions that are beyond the conventional paradigm of fluctuations of a symmetry breaking order parameter are challenging for theory. These phase transitions often involve emergent deconfined gauge fields at the critical points as demonstrated in 2+1-dimensions. Examples include phase transitions in quantum magnetism as well as those between Symmetry Protected Topological phases. In this paper, we present several examples of Deconfined Quantum Critical Points (DQCP) between Symmetry Protected Topological phases in 3+1-D for both bosonic and fermionic systems. Some o…
There is a number of contradictory findings with regard to whether the theory describing easy-plane quantum antiferromagnets undergoes a second-order phase transition. The traditional Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson approach suggests a first-order phase transition, as there are two different competing order parameters. On the other hand, it is known that the theory has the property of self-duality which has been connected to the existence of a deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP). The latter regime suggests that order parameters are not the elementary building blocks of the theory, but rather consi…
We consider a model Hamiltonian with two SU(4) fermions per site on a square lattice, showing a competition between bilinear and biquadratic interactions. This model has generated interest due to possible realizations in ultracold atom experiments and existence of spin liquid ground states. Using a basis transformation, we show that part of the phase diagram is amenable to quantum Monte Carlo simulations without a sign problem. We find evidence for spin nematic and valence bond crystalline phases, which are separated by a weak first order phase transition. A U(1) symmetry is found to emerge in…
We determine the ground-state phase-diagram of a Hubbard Hamiltonian with correlated hopping, which is asymmetric under particle-hole transform. By lowering the repulsive Coulomb interaction U at appropriate filling and interaction parameters, the ground state separates into a hole and an electron conducting phases: two different wave vectors characterize the system and charge-charge correlations become incommensurate. By further decreasing U another transition occurs at which the hole conducting region becomes insulating, and conventional phase separation takes place. Finally, for negative U …
We model a system of ultracold fermionic dipolar molecules on a two-dimensional square lattice. Assuming that the molecules are in their nondegenerate hyperfine ground state, and that the dipole moment is polarized perpendicular to the plane (as in the recent experiments on 40K-87Rb molecules), we approximate these molecules as spinless fermions with long range repulsive dipolar interactions. We use mean field theory to obtain the restricted phase diagram as a function of the filling, the strength of interaction and the temperature. We find a number of ordered density wave phases in the system…
We calculate the nonequilibrium dynamic evolution of a one-dimensional system of two-component fermionic atoms after a strong local quench by using a time-dependent spin-density-functional theory. The interaction quench is also considered to see its influence on the spin-charge separation. It is shown that the charge velocity is larger than the spin velocity for the system of on-site repulsive interaction (Luttinger liquid), and vise versa for the system of on-site attractive interaction (Luther-Emery liquid). We find that both the interaction quench and polarization suppress the spin-charge s…
Recent work explores the candidate phases of the 4d adjoint quantum chromodynamics (QCD$_4$) with an SU(2) gauge group and two massless adjoint Weyl fermions. Both Cordova-Dumitrescu and Bi-Senthil propose possible low energy 4d topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) to saturate the higher 't Hooft anomalies of adjoint QCD$_4$ under a renormalization-group (RG) flow from high energy. In this work, we generalize the symmetry-extension method [arXiv:1705.06728] to higher symmetries, and formulate higher group cohomology and cobordism theory approach to construct higher-symmetric TQFTs. We pr…
In this paper, we investigate the ground state properties of a mixture of two species of fermionic atoms in one-dimensional optical lattice, as described by the asymmetric Hubbard model. The quantum phase transition from density wave to phase separation is investigated by studying both the corresponding charge order parameter and quantum entanglement. A rigorous proof that even for the single hole doping case, the density wave is unstable to the phase separation in the infinite U limit, is given. Therefore, our results are quite instructive for both on-going experiments on strongly correlated …
We formulate a family of spin Topological Quantum Filed Theories (spin-TQFTs) as fermionic generalization of bosonic Dijkgraaf-Witten TQFTs. They are obtained by gauging $G$-equivariant invertible spin-TQFTs, or, in physics language, gauging the interacting fermionic Symmetry Protected Topological states (SPTs) with a finite group $G$ symmetry. We use the fact that the latter are classified by Pontryagin duals to spin-bordism groups of the classifying space $BG$. We also consider unoriented analogues, that is $G$-equivariant invertible pin$^\pm$-TQFTs (fermionic time-reversal-SPTs) and their g…
Topologically-ordered phases of matter, although stable against local perturbations, are usually restricted to relatively small regions in phase diagrams. Their preparation requires thus a precise fine tunning of the system's parameters, a very challenging task in most experimental setups. In this work, we investigate a model of spinless fermions interacting with dynamical $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge fields on a cross-linked ladder, and show evidence of topological order throughout the full parameter space. In particular, we show how a magnetic flux is spontaneously generated through the ladder due t…

We study the attractive Fermi mixture of a ${}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$-${}^{40}\mathrm{K}$ gas in one dimension using the continuous matrix product states variational ansatz and obtain the $T=0$ phase diagram. We predict an axial density profile that contains four distinct phases trapped induced along one-dimensional (1D) tubes, which is more intricate than those observed in 1D mass-balanced systems or in higher-dimensional gas clouds. The parameter regimes explored are realistic in view of possible future experiments. This an application of continuous matrix product states to a nonintegrable fermioni…
The breakdown of the lattice Kondo effect in local-moment metals can lead to non-trivial forms of quantum criticality and a variety of non-Fermi-liquid phases. Given indications that Kondo-breakdown transitions involve criticality not only in the spin but also in the charge sector, we investigate the interplay of Kondo breakdown and strong valence fluctuations in generalized Anderson lattice models. We employ a parton mean-field theory to describe the transitions between deconfined fractionalized Fermi liquids and various confined phases. We find that rapid valence changes near Kondo breakdown…
In this paper, by using two dimensional (2D) Hubbard models with pi-flux phase and that on a hexagonal lattice as examples, we explore spin-charge-separated solitons in nodal antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator - an AF order with massive Dirac fermionic excitations (see detail in the paper). We calculate fermion zero modes and induced quantum numbers on solitons (half skyrmions) in the continuum limit, which are similar to that in the quasi one-dimensional conductor polyacetylene (CH)x and that in topological band insulator. In particular, we find some novel phenomena : thanks to an induced stagg…
Quantum fluctuations of the Néel state of the square lattice antiferromagnet are usually described by a $\mathbb{CP}^1$ theory of bosonic spinons coupled to a U(1) gauge field, and with a global SU(2) spin rotation symmetry. Such a theory also has a confining phase with valence bond solid (VBS) order, and upon including spin-singlet charge 2 Higgs fields, deconfined phases with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order possibly intertwined with discrete broken global symmetries. We present dual theories of the same phases starting from a mean-field theory of fermionic spinons moving in $π$-flux in each…
Hill et al. have recently measured both the thermal and charge conductivities in the normal state of a high temperature superconductor. Based on the vanishing of the Wiedemann-Franz ratio in the extrapolated zero temperature limit, they conclude that the charge carriers in this material are not fermionic. Here I make a simple observation that the prefactor in the temperature dependence of the measured thermal conductivity is unusually large, corresponding to an extremely small energy scale $T_0 \approx 0.15$ K. I argue that $T_0$ should be interpreted as a collective scale. Based on model-inde…
We discuss compact (2+1)-dimensional Maxwell electrodynamics coupled to fermionic matter with N replica. For large enough N, the latter corresponds to an effective theory for the nearest neighbor SU(N) Heisenberg antiferromagnet, in which the fermions represent solitonic excitations known as spinons. Here we show that the spinons are deconfined for $N>N_c=36$, thus leading to an insulating state known as spin liquid. A previous analysis considerably underestimated the value of $N_c$. We show further that for $20<N\leq 36$ there can be either a confined or a deconfined phase, depending on the i…
We demonstrate an exact local transformation which maps a purely Fermionic manybody system to a system of spinfull Bosons and spinless Fermions, demonstrating a possible path to a non-Fermi liquid state. We apply this to the half-filled Hubbard model and show how the transformation maps the ordinary spin half Fermionic degrees of freedom exactly and without introducing Hilbert space constraints to a charge-like ``quasicharge'' fermion and a spin-like ``quasispin'' Boson while preserving all the symmetries of the model. We present approximate solutions with localized charge which emerge natural…
The Schwinger-boson theory of the frustrated square lattice antiferromagnet yields a stable, gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid ground state with time-reversal symmetry, incommensurate spin correlations and long-range Ising-nematic order. We obtain an equivalent description of this state using fermionic spinons (the fermionic spinons can be considered to be bound states of the bosonic spinons and the visons). Upon doping, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid can lead to a fractionalized Fermi liquid (FL*) with small Fermi pockets of electron-like quasiparticles, while preserving the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ to…
Thanks to the development in quantum Monte Carlo technique, the compact U(1) lattice gauge theory coupled to fermionic matter at (2+1)D is now accessible with large-scale numerical simulations, and the ground state phase diagram as a function of fermion flavor ($N_f$) and the strength of gauge fluctuations is mapped out~\cite{Xiao2018Monte}. Here we focus on the large fermion flavor case ($N_f=8$) to investigate the dynamic properties across the deconfinement-to-confinement phase transition. In the deconfined phase, fermions coupled to the fluctuating gauge field to form U(1) spin liquid with …
Ground-state properties of fermionic mixtures confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice are studied numerically within the spinless Falicov-Kimball model with a harmonic trap. A number of remarkable results are found. (i) At low particle filling the system exhibits the phase separation with heavy atoms in the center of the trap and light atoms in the surrounding regions. (ii) Mott-insulating phases always coexist with metallic phases. (iii) Atomic-density waves are observed in the insulating regions for all particle fillings near half-filled lattice case. (iv) The variance of the local den…
Quantum information theory and strongly correlated electron systems share a common theme of macroscopic quantum entanglement. In both topological error correction codes and theories of quantum materials (spin liquid, heavy fermion and high-$T_c$ systems) entanglement is implemented by means of an emergent gauge symmetry. Inspired by these connections, we introduce a simple model for fermions moving in the deconfined phase of a $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge theory, by coupling Kitaev's toric code to mobile fermions. This permits us to exactly solve the ground state of this system and map out its phase di…
At zero temperature, the classical antiferromagnetic Ising model on the pyrochlore lattice is a spin disorder phase of the critical spin correlation. It is a deconfined phase in that the binding energy of the monopole-anti-monopole pair is independent of their distance of separation. We show that turning on a transverse magnetic field turns it into the cooperative paramagnet, and the spin correlation becomes exponential decay. Furthermore, it introduces the quantum confinement (of magnetic monopoles), where the binding energy of the pair is proportional to their distance of separation. This di…
A fermionic model, built up of q species of localized Fermi particles, interacting by charge correlations, is isomorphic to a spin-q/2 Ising model. However, the equivalence is only formal and the two systems exhibit a different physical behavior. By considering a Bethe lattice with q=1, we have exactly solved the models. There exists a critical temperature below which there is a spontaneous breakdown of the particle-hole symmetry for the first model, and of the spin symmetry for the second. While the spin system is always stable and exhibits a homogeneous ferromagnetic phase below T_{c}, the f…
We study the effect of mass imbalance on the phase diagram of a two-component fermionic mixture with attractive interactions in optical lattices. Using static and dynamical mean-field theories, we show that the pure superfluid phase is stable for all couplings when the mass imbalance is smaller than a limiting value. For larger imbalance, phase separation between a superfluid and a charge-density wave takes place when the coupling exceeds a critical strength. The harmonic trap induces a spatial segregation of the two phases, with a rapid variation of the density at the boundary.
We study a balanced two-component system of ultracold fermions in one dimension with attractive interactions and subject to a spin-dependent optical lattice potential of opposite sign for the two components. We find states with different types of modulated pairing order parameters which are conceptually similar to pi-phases discussed for superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructures. Increasing the lattice depth induces sharp transitions between states of different parity. While the origin of the order parameter oscillations is similar to the FFLO phase for paired states with spin imbalance, the…
A continuous-time formulation of the Diffusion Monte Carlo method for lattice models is presented. In its simplest version, without the explicit use of trial wavefunctions for importance sampling, the method is an excellent tool for investigating quantum lattice models in parameter regions close to generalized Rokhsar-Kivelson points. This is illustrated by showing results for the quantum dimer model on both triangular and square lattices. The potential energy of two test monomers as a function of their separation is computed at zero temperature. The existence of deconfined monomers in the tri…
In this paper, we study the role of both "spin"(species) and mass imbalance in a mixture of two species of fermionic atoms with attractive interaction in an one-dimensional optical lattice. Using the bosonization approach, quantum phase transitions between a liquid phase and phase separated states are studied under various conditions of interaction, spin imbalance, and mass imbalance. We find that, in the phase-separated region, there exists two kinds of phase separation and a special quantum phase transition might exist between them in the large $U$ limit. On the other hand, the singlet super…
We use bosonization approach to investigate quantum phases in mixtures of bosonic and fermionic atoms confined in one dimensional optical lattices. The phase diagrams can be well understood in terms of polarons, which correspond to atoms that are "dressed" by screening clouds of the other atom species. For a mixture of single species of fermionic and bosonic atoms we find a charge density wave phase, a phase with fermion pairing, and a regime of phase separation. For a mixture of two species of fermionic atoms and one species of bosonic atoms we obtain spin and charge density wave phases, a Wi…
We carry out \textit{ab initio} study of ground state phase diagram of spin-1/2 cold fermionic atoms within two-fold degenerate $p$-band of an anisotropic optical lattice. Using the Gutzwiller variational approach, we show that a robust ferromagnetic phase exists for a vast range of band fillings and interacting strengths. The ground state crosses over from spin density wave state to spin-1 Neel state at half filling. Additional harmonic trap will induce spatial separation of varies phases. We also discuss several relevant observable consequences and detection methods. Experimental test of the…
The phenomenon of Spin-Charge separation in non-Fermi liquids is well understood only in certain solvable d=1 fermionic systems. In this paper we furnish the first example of asymptotic Spin-Charge separation in a d=1 non solvable model. This goal is achieved using Renormalization Group approach combined with Ward-Identities and Schwinger-Dyson equations, corrected by the presence of a bandwidth cut-offs. Such methods, contrary to bosonization, could be in principle applied also to lattice or higher dimensional systems.
