The intermediate scattering function is interpreted as a correlation function of thermal wave packets of the scattering centers perturbed by the scattering particles at different times. A proof of concept is given at the example of ballistic moving centers. The ensuing numerical method is then illustrated at the example of CO adsorbed on Cu(100).
We theoretically analyze the light scattering of an optomechanical cavity which strongly interacts with a single two-level system and couples simultaneously to a mechanical oscillator by radiation forces. The analysis is based on the assumptions that the system is driven at low intensity, and that the mechanical interaction is sufficiently weak, permitting a perturbative treatment. We find quantum interference in the scattering paths, which allows to suppress the Stokes-component of the scattered light. This effect can be exploited to reduce the motional energy of the mechanical oscillator.
High-gain resonant nonlinear Raman scattering on trapped cold atoms within a high-fineness ring optical cavity is simply explained under a nonlinear opto-mechanical mechanism, and a proposal using it to detect frequency of micro-trap on atom chip is presented. The enhancement of scattering spectrum is due to a coherent Raman conversion between two different cavity modes mediated by collective vibrations of atoms through nonlinear opto-mechanical couplings. The physical conditions of this technique are roughly estimated on Rubidium atoms, and a simple quantum analysis as well as a multi-body se…
Time-dependent nonequilibrium Green's functions (TDNEGF) are shown to provide a flexible, effective tool for the description of quantum mechanical single particle scattering on a spatially localized, time-dependent potential. Focusing on numerical methods, arbitrary space and time dependence of the potential can be treated, provided it is zero before an initial time instant. In this case, appropriate version of the Dyson and Keldysh equations lead to a transparent description with clear physical interpretation. The interaction of a short laser pulse and an electron propagating initially in fre…
Levitated particles are a promising platform for precision sensing of external perturbations and probing the boundary between quantum and classical worlds. A critical obstacle for these applications is the difficulty of generating nonclassical states of motion which have not been realized so far. Here, we show that strong squeezing of the motion of a levitated particle below the vacuum level is feasible with available experimental parameters. Using suitable modulation of the trapping potential (which is impossible with clamped mechanical resonators) and coherent scattering of trapping photons …
We study the dynamics of a mechanical resonator parametrically coupled to a driven dissipative quantum emitter in the ultra-strong coupling regime. We show that this regime is fully compatible with a semi-classical treatment, and we derive master equations for the emitter and the resonator. We show that the fluctuations of the driven emitter's population induce the non-symmetrical scattering of the mechanical quadratures. At long timescales, such scattering back-acts on the emitter, which eventually decouples from the driving light. This optical noise at the quantum limit is observable with st…
Using Fermat's least optical path principle the family of ray-trajectories through a special but common type of a gradient refractive index lens, n(r)=n_0+Δn R/r, is solved analytically. The solution, i.e. the ray-equation r(phi), is shown to be closely related to the famous Rutherford scattering and therefore termed photonic Rutherford scattering. It is shown that not only do these classical limits correspond, but also the wave-mechanical pictures coincide: The time-independent Schrödingier equation and the inhomogeneous Helmholz equation permit the same mapping between massive particle scatt…
Nanomechanical resonators (NMRs), as the quantum mechanical sensing probers, have played the important roles for various high-precision quantum measurements. Differing from the previous emission spectral probes (i.e., the NMR modified the atomic emission), in this paper we propose an alternative approach, i.e., by probing the scattering spectra of the quantum mechanical prober coupled to the driving microwaves, to characterize the physical features of the NMR embedded in a rf-SQUID based superconducting qubit. It is shown that, from the observed specifical frequency points in the spectra, i.e.…
Based on the Stueckelberg-Horwitz-Piron theory of covariant quantum mechanics on curved spacetime, we solved wave equation for a charged covariant harmonic oscillator in the background of charged static spherically symmetric black hole. Using Greens functions , we found asymptotic form for the wave function in the lowest mode (s-mode) and in higher moments. It has been proven that for s-wave, in a definite range of solid angles, the differential cross section depends effectively to the magnetic and electric charges of the black hole.
We provide a compendium of the quantum mechanical equations for photon emission rates, photon absorption cross sections, and photon scattering cross sections. For each case, the different equations that apply for discrete or continuous electron states of the emitting, absorbing, or scattering material are given.
It is well known that string theory generates the idea of higher dimensional spacetime instead of the (3+1) dimensions, in which we seem to live. It indicates that the extra space dimensions may remain curled up into very small space. In this paper, we study quantum mechanical scattering in presence of extra compact space dimension in the hope of devising a method to get a clue to the presence of extra space dimension. We consider a simplified model of scattering, in which a beam of free particles is scattered due to a one dimensional Dirac-delta potential in presence of an extra compact space…
The upside-down $-x^4$, $-x^6$, and $-x^8$ potentials with appropriate PT-symmetric boundary conditions have real, positive, and discrete quantum-mechanical spectra. This paper proposes a straightforward macroscopic quantum-mechanical scattering experiment in which one can observe and measure these bound-state energies directly.
The coherence properties of mechanical resonators are often limited by multiple unavoidable forms of loss -- including phonon-phonon and phonon-defect scattering -- which result in the scattering of sound into other resonant modes and into the phonon bath. Dynamic suppression of this scattering loss can lift constraints on device structure and can improve tolerance to defects in the material, even after fabrication. Inspired by recent experiments, here we introduce a model of phonon losses resulting from disorder in a whispering gallery mode resonator with acousto-optical coupling between opti…
The inverse scattering problem of the three-dimensional Schroedinger equation is considered at fixed scattering energy with spherically symmetric potentials. The phase shifts determine the potential therefore a constructive scheme for recovering the scattering potential from a finite set of phase shifts at a fixed energy is of interest. Such a scheme is suggested by Cox and Thompson [3] and their method is revisited here. Also some new results are added arising from investigation of asymptotics of potentials and concerning statistics of colliding particles. A condition is given [2] for the con…
Conventional techniques for laser cooling, by coherent scattering off of internal states or through an optical cavity mode, have so far proved inefficient on mechanical oscillators heavier than a few nanograms. That is because larger oscillators vibrate at frequencies much too small compared to the scattering rates achievable by their coupling to auxiliary modes. Decoherence mechanisms typically observed in heavy low frequency elastically suspended oscillators also differ markedly from what is assumed in conventional treatments of laser cooling. We show that for a low-frequency anelastic oscil…
The inelastic scatterings of matter systems, such as Raman scattering, contain rich information on mechanical vibrations like as resonant frequencies, which lead to various applications, for example, a sensor for specific molecules. However, observing output signals requires a sensitive setup because an inelastic signal is inherently weak and is disturbed by strong input. In this study, we theoretically investigate a physical scheme to avoid detrimental impact of the input by distancing it from the emitter and greatly enhancing the output signals. If two bodies are coupled mechanically and dir…
In the calculation of quantum-mechanical singular-potential scattering, one encounters divergence. We suggest three renormalization schemes, dimensional renormalization, analytic continuation approach, and minimal-subtraction scheme to remove the divergence.
