The interplay between electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions is studied in a one-dimensional lattice model, by means of a variational Monte Carlo method based on generalized Jastrow-Slater wave functions. Here, the fermionic part is constructed by a pair-product state, which explicitly depends on the phonon configuration, thus including the electron-phonon coupling in a backflow-inspired way. We report the results for the Hubbard model in presence of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger coupling to optical phonons, both at half-filling and upon hole doping. At half-filling, the ground state is either a translationally invariant Mott insulator, with gapless spin excitations, or a Peierls insulator, which breaks translations and has fully gapped excitations. Away from half-filling, the charge gap closes in both Mott and Peierls insulators, turning the former into a conventional Luttinger liquid (gapless in all excitation channels). The latter, instead, retains a finite spin gap that closes only above a threshold value of the doping. Even though consistent with the general theory of interacting electrons in one dimension, the existence of such a phase (with gapless charge but gapped spin excitations) has never been demonstrated in a model with repulsive interaction and with only two Fermi points. Since the spin-gapped metal represents the one-dimensional counterpart of a superconductor, our results furnish evidence that a true off-diagonal long-range order may exist in the two-dimensional case.
The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger(SSH) model has been widely used to study the topological property of 1D systems. It is claimed that there is fractional charge at the boundary of the nontrivial phase while none at that of trivial phase. However, this conclusion is in direct contradiction to the modern theory of polarization(MTP). We solve this paradox by showing that the polarization of SSH model depends only on the distribution of the positive charges and is irrelevant to the Zak phase defined in previous works. Thus the distribution of positive charges alone determines whether the SSH chain is topol…
We introduce variational wave functions to evaluate the ground-state properties of spin-phonon coupled systems described by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. Quantum spins and phonons are treated on equal footing within a Monte Carlo sampling, and different regimes are investigated. We show that the proposed variational Ansatz yields good agreement with previous density-matrix renormalization group results in one dimension and is able to accurately describe the spin-Peierls transition. This variational approach is neither constrained by the magnetoelastic-coupling strength nor by the dimensional…
The two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of electrons coupled to quantum phonons is investigated using Langevin dynamics within the framework of auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo. Based on an explicit determination of the density of zeros of the fermion determinant, it is argued that the method is efficient in the challenging adiabatic limit. Large-scale simulations at the O(4)-symmetric point establish that the ground state of the 2D SSH model undergoes a transition from a $(π,π)$ valence bond solid to an antiferromagnet with increasing phonon frequency, yet still in the adiabatic reg…
We consider a three-dimensional model of coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains. The analytically soluble model discussed here reliably reproduces the features of the band structure of crystalline polyacetylene as obtained from density-functional theory. We show that when a certain inter-chain coupling is sufficiently increased, the system develops a ring of Weyl nodes. We argue that such an increase could be achieved experimentally by intercalation or extreme pressure. With the addition of a simple intra-orbital pairing term we find that the system supports an exotic superconducting state …
The Hubbard and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hamiltonians (SSH) are iconic models for understanding the qualitative effects of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions respectively. In the two-dimensional square lattice Hubbard model at half filling, the on-site Coulomb repulsion, $U$, between up and down electrons induces antiferromagnetic (AF) order and a Mott insulating phase. On the other hand, for the SSH model, there is an AF phase when the electron-phonon coupling $λ$ is less than a critical value $λ_c$ and a bond order wave when $λ> λ_c$. In this work, we perform numerical studies on…
For the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model on the two-dimensional square lattice, two third nearest neighbor hoppings which preserve chiral symmetry are introduced. Like the case of one dimension, the longer-range hopping can drive topological transitions and leads to the larger topological invariant (vectored Berry phase for the two dimensional SSH model). We obtain the phase boundaries and topological phase diagrams from the winding pattern of $ρ(k_l)$ of the Bloch Hamiltonian. Effects of correlations on the extended two dimensional SSH model are also investigated. The correlation shifts the p…
Topological magnons in a one-dimensional (1D) ferromagnetic (FM) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with anisotropic exchange interactions are investigated. Apart from the inter-cellular isotropic Heisenberg interaction, the intercellular anisotropic exchange interactions, i.e. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and pseudo-dipolar interaction (PDI), also can induce the emergence of the non-trivial phase with two degenerate in-gap edge states separately localized at the two ends of the 1D chain, while the intracellular interactions instead unfavors the topological phase. The interplay among …
We study the disconnected entanglement entropy, $S^D$, of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. $S^D$ is a combination of both connected and disconnected bipartite entanglement entropies that removes all area and volume law contributions, and is thus only sensitive to the non-local entanglement stored within the ground state manifold. Using analytical and numerical computations, we show that $S^D$ behaves as a topological invariant, i.e., it is quantized to either $0$ or $2 \log (2)$ in the topologically trivial and non-trivial phases, respectively. These results also hold in the presence of symmetr…
We recently unveiled that antiferromagnetism (AFM) order can be dominantly induced by the bond Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) electron-phonon coupling (EPC), which is beyond the conventional wisdom that AFM order is usually driven by strong Coulomb interactions. Nevertheless, many aspects of the interplay between EPC and strong electronic interactions on AFM ordering remains unexplored. Here, we investigate the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard (SSHH) model with bond SSH phonons and onsite Hubbard interactions by large-scale quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulations and obtain its ground-state phase diagra…
Over the last several years, a new generation of quantum simulations has greatly expanded our understanding of charge density wave phase transitions in Hamiltonians with coupling between local phonon modes and the on-site charge density. A quite different, and interesting, case is one in which the phonons live on the bonds, and hence modulate the electron hopping. This situation, described by the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian, has so far only been studied with quantum Monte Carlo in one dimension. Here we present results for the 2D SSH model, and show that a bond ordered wave (BOW) in…

We show that mutual statistics between quantum particles can be tuned to generate emergent novel few particle quantum mechanics for the boundary modes of symmetry-protected topological phases of matter. As a concrete setting, we study a system of pseudofermions, defined as quantum particles with tunable algebra, which lie on two distinct Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains. We find that as the mutual statistics of the particles are tuned -- the boundary modes present in the two chains gets non-trivially entangled showing a sudden jump in their mutual entanglement entropy. We further show that, s…
We use the Lindblad equation method to investigate the onset of a mobility edge and the topological phase transition in the disordered SSH chain connected to two external baths in the large bias limit. From the scaling properties of the nonequilibrium stationary current flowing across the system, we recover the localization/delocalization in the disordered chain. To probe the topological phase transition in the presence of disorder, we use the even-odd differential occupancy as a mean to discriminate topologically trivial from topologically nontrival phases in the out-of-equilibirum system. Ev…
A remarkable feature of the trimer Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH3) model is that it supports localized edge states. Although Zak's phase remains quantized for the case of a mirror-symmetric chain, it is known that it fails to take integer values in the absence of this symmetry and thus it cannot play the role of a well-defined bulk invariant in the general case. Attempts to establish a bulk-edge correspondence have been made via Green's functions or through extensions to a synthetic dimension. Here we propose a simple alternative for SSH3, utilizing the previously introduced sublattice Zak's phase…
