Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates for information and storage technologies. In the last years, magnetic multilayer systems have been tuned to enable room-temperature skyrmions, stable even in the absence of external magnetic field. There are several models describing the properties of an isolated skyrmion in a homogeneous background for single repetition multilayer stack, however, the description on how the equilibrium skyrmion size in lattices scales with increasing the number of repetitions of the stack remains unaddressed. This question is essential for fundamental and practical perspectives, as the behaviour of an ensemble of skyrmions differs from the isolated case. Based on a multilayer stack hosting a skyrmion lattice, we have carried out a series of imaging experiments scaling up the dipolar interaction by repeating $n$ times the multilayer unit, from $n =1$ up to $n=30$. We have developed an analytical description for the skyrmion radius in the whole multilayer regime, $i.e.$, from thin to thick film limits. Furthermore, we provide insight on how nucleation by an externally applied field can give rise to a lattice with more skyrmions (thus, overfilled) than the predicted by the calculations.

Magnetic skyrmions are localized particle-like nontrivial swirls that are promising in building high-performance topological spintronic devices. The read-out functions in skyrmionic devices require the translation of magnetic skyrmions to electrical signals. Here, we report combined real-space magnetic imaging and anisotropic magnetoresistance studies on dipolar skyrmions. A single skyrmion chain and single skyrmion are observed using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy imaging. Meanwhile, the field, helicity, and skyrmion count dependence of anisotropic magnetoresistance of the Fe3Sn2 na…
Magnetic skyrmions have been the subject of extensive experimental studies in ferromagnetic thin films and multilayers, revealing a diversity in their size, stability and internal structure. While the orthodox skyrmion theory focuses on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia interaction (DMI) and neglects higher-order energy terms, it is becoming clear that the full stray field energy needs to be taken into account to understand these recent observations. Here we present a micromagnetic study based on rigorous mathematical analysis which allows to account for the full stray field energy in the thin film an…
Motivated by recent experimental results on GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ [Khanh, N.D., Nakajima, T., Yu, X. et al., \emph{Nat. Nanotechnol.} \textbf{15}, 444-449 (2020)], where nanometric square skyrmion lattice was observed, we propose simple analytical mean-field description of the high-temperature part of the phase diagram of centrosymmetric tetragonal frustrated antiferromagnets with dipolar interaction in the external magnetic field. In the reciprocal space dipolar forces provide momentum dependent biaxial anisotropy. It is shown that in tetragonal lattice in the large part of the Brillouin zone for mu…
Skyrmions and antiskyrmions are topologically protected spin structures with opposite topological charge. Particularly in coexisting phases, these two types of magnetic quasi-particles may show fascinating physics and potential for spintronic devices. While skyrmions are observed in a wide range of materials, until now antiskyrmions were exclusive to materials with D2d symmetry. In this work, we show first and second-order antiskyrmions stabilized by magnetic dipole-dipole interaction in Fe/Gd-based multilayers. We modify the magnetic properties of the multilayers by Ir insertion layers. Using…
We present a combined analytical and numerical micromagnetic study of the equilibrium energy, size and shape of anti-skyrmionic magnetic configurations. Anti-skyrmions can be stabilized when the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction has opposite signs along two orthogonal in-plane directions, breaking the magnetic circular symmetry. We compare the equilibrium energy, size and shape of anti-skyrmions and skyrmions that are stabilized respectively in environments with anisotropic and isotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, but with the same strength of the magnetic interactions. When the dipolar…
Under the correct conditions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) can lead to topologically protected spin textures such as skyrmions. The application of DMI for spin-based computation and memory technologies is promising and requires a detailed consideration of the role intrinsic energies have on stabilizing the diverse textures observed thus far. Here we experimentally investigate the effect of dipolar energy from interlayer coupling on the remanent spin textures found at room temperature for interfacial DMI multilayers of [ Pt \ Co \ Ir ]$_{\times N}$. The total dipolar energy is modif…
We report a study of the magnetization reversals and skyrmion configurations in two systems - Pt/Co/MgO and Ir/Fe/Co/Pt multilayers, where magnetic skyrmions are stabilized by a combination of dipolar and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). First Order Reversal Curve (FORC) diagrams of low-DMI Pt/Co/MgO and high-DMI Ir/Fe/Co/Pt exhibit stark differences, which are identified by micromagnetic simulations to be indicative of hybrid and pure Néel skyrmions, respectively. Tracking the evolution of FORC features in multilayers with dipolar interactions and DMI, we find that the negative FORC …

Nanoscale magnetic skyrmions are considered as potential information carriers for future spintronics memory and logic devices. Such applications will require the control of their local creation and annihilation, which involves so far solutions that are either energy consuming or difficult to integrate. Here we demonstrate the control of skyrmion bubbles nucleation and annihilation using electric field gating, an easily integrable and potentially energetically efficient solution. We present a detailed stability diagram of the skyrmion bubbles in a Pt/Co/oxide trilayer and show that their stabil…
The interesting physics and potential memory technologies resulting from topologically protected spin textures such as skyrmions, has prompted efforts to discover new material systems that can host these kind of magnetic structures. Here we use the highly tunable magnetic properties of amorphous Fe/Gd multilayer films to explore the magnetic properties that lead to dipole-stabilized skyrmions and skyrmion lattices that form from the competition of dipolar field and exchange energy. Using both real space imaging and reciprocal space scattering techniques we determined the range of material prop…
Owing to the experimental discovery of magnetic skyrmions stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and/or dipolar interactions in thin films, there is a recent upsurge of interest in magnetic skyrmions with antiferromagnetic spins in order to overcome the fundamental limitations inherent with skyrmions in ferromagnetic materials. Here, we report on the observation of compact ferrimagnetic skyrmions for the class of amorphous alloys consisting of 4f rare-earth and 3d transition-metal elements with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, using a DyCo$_3$ film, that are identified by combining x-ray ma…
Antiferromagnetic (AFM) skyrmions are envisioned as ideal localized topological magnetic bits in future information technologies. In contrast to ferromagnetic (FM) skyrmions, they are immune to the skyrmion Hall effect, might offer potential terahertz dynamics while being insensitive to external magnetic fields and dipolar interactions. Although observed in synthetic AFM structures and as complex meronic textures in intrinsic AFM bulk materials, their realization in non-synthetic AFM films, of crucial importance in racetrack concepts, has been elusive. Here, we unveil their presence in a row-w…
Chiral magnetism has gained enormous interest in recent years because of the anticipated wealth of applications in nanoelectronics. The demonstrated stabilization of chiral magnetic domain walls and skyrmions has been attributed to the actively investigated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Recently, however, predictions were made that suggest dipolar interactions can also stabilize chiral domain walls and skyrmions, but direct experimental evidence has been lacking. Here we show that dipolar interactions can indeed stabilize chiral domain walls by directly imaging the magnetic domain walls u…
Skyrmions are chiral magnetic textures that have immense potential for applications in spintronic devices. However, their formation is quite challenging and necessitates a subtle balance of the magnetic interactions at play. Here, we study Ta/FeCoB/TaOx trilayer using crossed double wedges i.e. thickness gradients of FeCoB and of top Ta, which is subsequently oxidized leading to an oxidation gradient. This enabled us to observe micron-sized skyrmions in the vicinity of different transition regions of the sample: from perpendicular magnetic anisotropy to paramagnetic phase and also from perpend…

Nanoscale magnetic skyrmions have interesting static and transport properties that make them candidates for future spintronic devices. Control and manipulation of the size and behavior of skyrmions is thus of crucial importance. Using a Ginzburg-Landau approach, we show theoretically that skyrmions and skyrmion lattices can be stabilized by a spatial modulation of the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in a thin film of centro-symmetric ferromagnet. Remarkably, the skyrmion size is determined by the ratio of the exchange length and the period of the spatial modulation of the anisotropy, at variance …
A stable skyrmion, representing the smallest realizable magnetic texture, could be an ideal element for ultra-dense magnetic memories. Here, we review recent progress in the field of skyrmionics, which is concerned with studies of tiny whirls of magnetic configurations for novel memory and logic applications, with a particular emphasis on antiskyrmions. Magnetic antiskyrmions represent analogs of skyrmions with opposite topological charge. Just like skyrmions, antiskyrmions can be stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, as has been demonstrated in a recent experiment. Here, we emp…
We demonstrate room-temperature stabilization of dipolar magnetic skyrmions with diameters in the range of $100$ nm in a single ultrathin layer of the Heusler alloy Co$_2$FeAl (CFA) under moderate magnetic fields. Current-induced skyrmion dynamics in microwires is studied with a scanning Nitrogen-Vacancy magnetometer operating in the photoluminescence quenching mode. We first demonstrate skyrmion nucleation by spin-orbit torque and show that its efficiency can be significantly improved using tilted magnetic fields, an effect which is not specific to Heusler alloys and could be advantageous for…
In the quest for post-CMOS technologies, ferromagnetic skyrmions and their anti-particles have shown great promise as topologically protected solitonic information carriers in memory-in-logic or neuromorphic devices. However, the presence of dipolar fields in ferromagnets, restricting the formation of ultra-small topological textures, and the deleterious skyrmion Hall effect when driven by spin torques have thus far inhibited their practical implementations. Antiferromagnetic analogues, which are predicted to demonstrate relativistic dynamics, fast deflection-free motion and size scaling have …
The experimental realization of magnetic skyrmions in centrosymmetric materials has been driven by theoretical understanding of how a delicate balance of anisotropy and frustration can stabilize topological spin structures in applied magnetic fields. Recently, the centrosymmetric material Gd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ was shown to host a field-induced skyrmion phase, but the skyrmion stabilization mechanism remains unclear. Here, we employ neutron-scattering measurements on an isotopically-enriched polycrystalline Gd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ sample to quantify the interactions that drive skyrmion formation. Our a…
Magnetic skyrmions are intriguing topological spin textures that promise future high-density spintronic devices. The creation of magnetic skyrmions has been understood based on the energetics of skyrmions, but the detailed dynamic process of the skyrmion creation remains unclear. Here topological evolution in conversion from uneven domains to Néel-skyrmions is investigated using micromagnetic simulations. We find that, rather than the overall topological charge, annihilation of novel topological defects, i.e., recently suggested domain wall skyrmions, dominantly govern the skyrmion creation pr…

We report the critical role of La doping in the topological Hall effect observed in LaxEu1-xO thin films (~ 50 nm) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. When the La doping exceeds 0.036, topological Hall effect emerges, which we attribute to the formation of magnetic skyrmions. Besides, the La doping is found to play a critical role in determining the phases, densities, and sizes of the skyrmions in the LaxEu1-xO thin films. The maximum region of the skyrmion phase diagram is observed on the La0.1Eu0.9O thin film. As the La doping increases, the skyrmion density increases while the skyrmion size de…
The consequences of nonlinear anisotropic damping, driven by the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in thin ferromagnetic metals, are examined for the dynamics of topological magnetic solitons such as domain walls, vortices, and skyrmions. The damping is found to affect Bloch and Néel walls differently in the steady state regime below Walker breakdown and leads to a monotonic increase in the wall velocity above this transition for large values of the Rashba coefficient. For vortices and skyrmions, a generalization of the damping tensor within the Thiele formalism is presented. It is found …
Nitrogen-vacancy magnetic microscopy is employed in quenching mode as a non-invasive, high resolution tool to investigate the morphology of isolated skyrmions in ultrathin magnetic films. The skyrmion size and shape are found to be strongly affected by local pinning effects and magnetic field history. Micromagnetic simulations including static disorder, based on a physical model of grain-to-grain thickness variations, reproduce all experimental observations and reveal the key role of disorder and magnetic history in the stabilization of skyrmions in ultrathin magnetic films. This work opens th…
Non-collinear magnets exhibit a rich array of dynamic properties at microwave frequencies. They can host nanometre-scale topological textures known as skyrmions, whose spin resonances are expected to be highly sensitive to their local magnetic environment. Here, we report a magnetic resonance study of an [Ir/Fe/Co/Pt] multilayer hosting Néel skyrmions at room temperature. Experiments reveal two distinct resonances of the skyrmion phase during in-plane ac excitation, with frequencies between 6-12 GHz. Complementary micromagnetic simulations indicate that the net magnetic dipole moment rotates c…
Skyrmions can be stabilized in magnetic systems with broken inversion symmetry and chiral interactions, such as Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). Further, compensation of magnetic moments in ferrimagnetic materials can significantly reduce magnetic dipolar interactions, which tend to favor large skyrmions. Tuning DMI is essential to control skyrmion properties, with symmetry breaking at interfaces offering the greatest flexibility. However, in contrast to the ferromagnet case, few studies have investigated interfacial DMI in ferrimagnets. Here we present a systematic study of DMI in fe…
In a $β$-Mn-type chiral magnet Co$_9$Zn$_9$Mn$_2$, we demonstrate that the magnetic field-driven collapse of a room temperature metastable topological skyrmion lattice passes through a regime described by a partial topological charge inversion. Using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, the magnetization distribution was observed directly as the magnetic field was swept antiparallel to the original skyrmion core magnetization, i.e. negative magnetic fields. Due to the topological stability of skyrmions, a direct transition of the metastable skyrmion lattice to the equilibrium helical stat…
Magnetic skyrmions are swirling magnetic textures that can be efficiently driven with spin-orbit torques with a deflected trajectory. However, pinning slows skyrmions down and alters their trajectory, which prevents a quantitative comparison to analytical models. Here, we study skyrmions driven by spin-orbit torques at room temperature in ferrimagnetic GdCo thin films, an amorphous material with low pinning. Above a sharp current depinning threshold, we observe a clearly linear velocity increase with current that extrapolates to zero and a constant deflection angle, reaching high velocities up…
The role of dipolar interactions among Ni nanoparticles (NP) embedded in an amorphous SiO2/C matrix with different concentrations has been studied performing ac magnetic susceptibility Chi_ac measurements. For very diluted samples, with Ni concentrations < 4 wt % Ni or very weak dipolar interactions, the data are well described by the Neel-Arrhenius law. Increasing Ni concentration to values up to 12.8 wt % Ni results in changes in the Neel-Arrhenius behavior, the dipolar interactions become important, and need to be considered to describe the magnetic response of the NPs system. We have found…
Based on micromagnetic simulation and analysis of Thiele's equation, in this work we demonstrate that ratchet motion of skyrmion can be induced by a biharmonic in-plane magnetic field hx(t) = h1sin(mwt) + h2sin(nwt + phi), provided that integers m and n are coprime and that m + n is odd. Remarkably, the speed and direction of the ratchet motion can be readily adjusted by the field amplitude, frequency and phase, with the maximum speed being over 5 m/s and the direction rotatable over 360 degree. The origin of the skyrmion ratchet motion is analyzed by tracing the excitation spectra of the diss…
Recent advances on the stabilization and manipulation of chiral magnetization configurations in systems consisting in alternating atomic layers of ferromagnetic and non-magnetic materials hold promise of innovation in spintronics technology. The low dimensionality of the systems promotes spin orbit driven interfacial effects like antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) and surface magnetic anisotropy, whose relative strengths may be tuned to achieve stable nanometer sized magnetic objects with fixed chirality. While in most of the cases this is obtained by engineering complex mu…
Several challenges in designing an operational Skyrmion racetrack memory are well-known. Among those challenges, a few contradictions can be identified if researchers were to rely only on metallic materials. Hence, expanding the exploration on Skyrmion Physics into oxide materials is essential to bridge the contradicting gap. In this topical review, we first briefly revise the theories and criteria involved in stabilizing and manipulating Skymions, followed by studying the behaviors of dipolar-stabilized magnetic bubbles. Next, we explore the properties of multiferroic Skyrmions with magnetoel…
The $ΔH(M, ΔM)$ method and its ability to determine intrinsic switching field distributions of perpendicular recording media are numerically studied. It is found that the presence of dipolar interactions in the range of typical recording media substantially enhances the reliability of the $ΔH(M,ΔM)$ method. In addition, a strong correlation is observed between the precision of this method and a self-consistency-check of the data sets, which is based upon a simple redundancy measure. This suggests that the latter can be utilized as an efficient criterion to decide if a complete data analysis is…
We have investigated the magnetic and charge transport properties of single crystals of Nowotney Chimney Ladder compound Cr$_{11}$Ge$_{19}$ and mapped out a comprehensive phase diagram reflecting the complicated interplay between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, the dipolar interaction, and the magnetic anisotropy. We have identified a set of interesting magnetic phases and attributed a finite topological Hall effect to the recently discovered bi-skyrmion phase. These data also suggest the existence of an anti-skyrmion state at finite fields for temperatures just below the magnetic …
Magnetic skyrmions, as a whirling spin texture with axisymmetry, cannot be propelled by a uniform magnetic field. Therefore, reported skyrmion motions have been induced using other sorts of stimuli; typically, electric currents in magnetic metals as well as spin waves, thermal gradient, and field gradient have manifested their ability to drive skyrmion motion. Here, we demonstrate, through micromagnetic simulations and analytically, that magnetic skyrmions can be displaced by a uniform perpendicular magnetic field via a domain-wall (DW) mediator. For a fixed field strength, the velocity of a s…

The study of thermodynamics of topological defects is an important challenge to understand their underlying physics. Among them, magnetic skyrmions have a leading role for their physical properties and potential applications in storage and neuromorphic computing. In this paper, the thermodynamic statistics of magnetic skyrmions is derived. It is shown that the skyrmion free energy can be modelled via a parabolic function and the diameters statistics obeys the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution. This allows for making an analogy between the behavior of the distribution of skyrmion diameters statist…
Magnetic skyrmions are quasiparticles with non-trivial topology, envisioned to play a key role in next-generation data technology while simultaneously attracting fundamental research interest due to their emerging topological charge. In chiral magnetic multilayers, current-generated spin-orbit torques or ultrafast laser excitation can be used to nucleate isolated skyrmions on a picosecond timescale. Both methods, however, produce randomly arranged skyrmions, which inherently limits the precision on the location at which the skyrmions are nucleated. Here, we show that nanopatterning of the anis…
We report simulated infrared spectra of deuterated water and ice using Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics with maximally localized Wannier functions. Experimental features are accurately reproduced within the harmonic approximation. By decomposing the lineshapes in terms of intra and intermolecular dipole correlation functions we find that short-range intermolecular dynamic charge fluctuations associated to hydrogen bonds are prominent over the entire spectral range. Our analysis reveals the origin of several spectral features and identifies network bending modes in the far IR range.
The plasticity transition at the yield strength of a crystal typically signifies the tendency of dislocation defects towards relatively unrestricted motion. For an isolated dislocation the motion is in the slip plane with velocity proportional to the shear stress, while due to the long range interaction dislocation ensembles move towards satisfying emergent collective elastoplastic modes. Such collective motions have been discussed in terms of the elusively defined backstress. In this paper, we develop a two-dimensional stochastic continuum dislocation dynamics theory that clarifies the role o…
Quantization of topological charges determines the various topological spin textures that are expected to play a key role in future spintronic devices. While the magnetic skyrmion with a unit topological charge Q has been extensively studied, spin textures with other integer valued have not been verified well so far. Here, we report the real-space image, creation, and manipulation of a type of multi Q three-dimensional skyrmionic texture, where a circular spin spiral ties a bunch of skyrmion tubes. We define these objects as skyrmion bundles, and show they have arbitrarily integer values Q fro…
We observe the signature of zero-field ground-state skyrmions in BiSb topological insulator / MnGa bi-layers by using the topological Hall effect (THE). We observe a large critical interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-Interaction energy (5.0 pJ/m) at the BiSb/MnGa interface that can be tailored by controlling the annealing temperature of the MnGa template. The THE was observed at room temperature even under absence of an external magnetic field, which gives the strong evidence for the existence of thermodynamically stable skyrmions in MnGa/BiSb bi-layers. Our results will give insight into the ro…
The skyrmion is a topologically stable spin texture, in which the spin direction wraps a sphere. The topological nature gives rise to emergent electromagnetic phenomena such as topological Hall effect. Recently, the crystallization of nanoscale skyrmions was observed in chiral helimagnets with use of the neutron diffraction and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The skyrmions are quite mobile under electric current density as low as $\sim$ 10$^6$ A/m$^2$, and, in some cases, stable up to near room temperature. These features suggest that the skyrmions may work as a magnetic stable-varia…
