We propose a new expression of the cooperative decay rate of a one-dimensional chain of N two-level atoms in the single-excitation configuration. From it, the interference nature of superradiance and subradiance arises naturally, without the need of solving the eigenvalue problem of the atom-atom interaction Green function. The cooperative decay rate can be interpreted as the imaginary part of the expectation value of the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian of the system, evaluated over a generalized Dicke state of N atoms in the single-excitation manifold. Whereas the subradiant decay rate is zero for an infinite chain, it decreases as 1/N for a finite chain. A simple approximated expression for the cooperative decay rate is obtained as a function of the lattice constant d and the atomic number N. The results are obtained first for the scalar model and then extended to the vectorial light model, assuming all the dipoles aligned.
On the basis of a quantum microscopic approach we study the cooperative effects induced by the dipole-dipole interaction in an ensemble of point-like impurity centers located near a charged perfectly conducting surface. We analyze the simultaneous influence of the modified spatial structure of field modes near the conductive surface and the electric field on the transition spectrum of an excited atom inside an ensemble and on the radiation trapping. We show that the electric field modifies the cooperative Lamb shift, as well as the character of sub- and superradiant decay. We also demonstrate …
We demonstrate a cooperative optical non-linearity caused by dipolar interactions between Rydberg atoms in an ultra-cold atomic ensemble. By coupling a probe transition to the Rydberg state we map the strong dipole-dipole interactions between Rydberg pairs onto the optical field. We characterize the non-linearity as a function of electric field and density, and demonstrate the enhancement of the optical non-linearity due to cooperativity.
On the basis of the general quantum microscopic theory we study the process of spontaneous decay of an excited atom in a dense and disordered ensemble of point-like impurity atoms embedded into transparent dielectric and located near a charged perfectly conducting surface. We have analyzed the simultaneous influence of the modified spatial structure of field modes near the conductive surface and the electric field on the character of interatomic dipoledipole interaction. This leads to the modification of the transition spectrum of an excited atom inside an ensemble and the spontaneous decay dy…
By coupling a probe transition to a Rydberg state using electro-magnetically induced transparency (EIT) we map the strong dipole-dipole interactions onto an optical field. We characterize the resulting cooperative optical non-linearity as a function of probe strength and density. We show that the effect of dipole blockade cannot be described using a mean-field but requires an $N$-atom cooperative model. Good quantitative agreement is obtained for three atoms per blockade with the $n=60$ Rydberg state. We place an upper-limit on the dephasing rate of the blockade spheres of $<110$ kHz.
We describe a theoretical scheme that allows for transfer of quantum states of atomic collective excitation between two macroscopic atomic ensembles localized in two spatially-separated domains. The conception is based on the occurrence of double-exciton dark states due to the collective destructive quantum interference of the emissions from the two atomic ensembles. With an adiabatically coherence manipulation for the atom-field couplings by stimulated Ramann scattering, the dark states will extrapolate from an exciton state of an ensemble to that of another. This realizes the transport of qu…
We describe an efficient numerical method for simulating the dynamics of interacting spin ensembles in the presence of dephasing and decay. The method builds on the discrete truncated Wigner approximation for isolated systems, which combines the mean-field dynamics of a spin ensemble with a Monte Carlo sampling of discrete initial spin values to account for quantum correlations. Here we show how this approach can be generalized for dissipative spin systems by replacing the deterministic mean-field evolution by a stochastic process, which describes the decay of coherences and populations while …
Abstract We investigate the spectral shift in collective forward scattering for a cold dense atomic cloud. The shift, sometimes called collective Lamb shift, results from resonant dipole-dipole interaction mediated by real and virtual photon exchange, forming many-body states displaying various super- and subradiant spectral behavior. The scattering spectrum reflects the overall radiative behavior from these states. However, it also averages out the radiative details associated with a single collective state, causing ambiguity in explaining the origin of the spectral shift and raising controve…
We demonstrate deterministic generation of two distinct collective excitations in one atomic ensemble, and we realize the Hong-Ou-Mandel interference between them. Using Rydberg blockade we create single collective excitations in two different Zeeman levels, and we use stimulated Raman transitions to perform a beam-splitter operation between the excited atomic modes. By converting the atomic excitations into photons, the two-excitation interference is measured by photon coincidence detection with a visibility of 0.89(6). The Hong-Ou-Mandel interference witnesses an entangled NOON state of the …
In a closely packed ensemble of quantum emitters, cooperative effects are typically suppressed due to the dephasing induced by the dipole-dipole interactions. Here, we show that by adding sufficiently strong collective dephasing cooperative effects can be restored. In particular, we show that the dipole force on a closely packed ensemble of strongly driven two-level quantum emitters, which collectively dephase, is enhanced in comparison to the dipole force on an independent non-interacting ensemble. Our results are relevant to solid state systems with embedded quantum emitters such as colour c…
The dipole blockade of Rydberg excitations is a hallmark of the strong interactions between atoms in these high-lying quantum states. One of the consequences of the dipole blockade is the suppression of fluctuations in the counting statistics of Rydberg excitations, of which some evidence has been found in previous experiments. Here we present experimental results on the dynamics and the counting statistics of Rydberg excitations of ultra-cold Rubidium atoms both on and off resonance, which exhibit sub- and super-Poissonian counting statistics, respectively. We compare our results with numeric…
An ensemble of multilevel atoms is a good candidate for a quantum information storage device. The information is encrypted in the collective ground state atomic coherence, which, in the absence of external excitation, is decoupled from the vacuum and therefore decoherence free. However, in the process of manipulation of atoms with light pulses (writing, reading), one inadvertently introduces a coupling to the environment, i.e. a source of decoherence. The dissipation process is often treated as an independent process for each atom in the ensemble, an approach which fails at large atomic optica…
Electron and nuclear spins have good coherence times and an ensemble of spins is a promising candidate for a quantum memory. By employing holographic techniques via field gradients a single ensemble may be used to store many bits of information. Here we present a coherent memory using a pulsed magnetic field gradient, and demonstrate the storage and retrieval of up to 100 weak 10 GHz coherent excitations in collective states of an electron spin ensemble. We further show that such collective excitations in the electron spin can then be stored in nuclear spin states, which offer coherence times …
We analyse the possibility to create two-mode spin squeezed states of two separate spin ensembles by inverting the spins in one ensemble and allowing spin exchange between the ensembles via a near resonant cavity field. We investigate the dynamics of the system using a combination of numerical and analytic calculations, and we obtain squeezing for a wide range of parameters. We also investigate the transfer of the squeezing properties to the cavity field and to an output mode from the cavity. Finally, we investigate how the squeezing is affected by effects of inhomogeneities which would be pre…
We report significant improvements in the retrieval efficiency of a single excitation stored in an atomic ensemble and in the subsequent generation of strongly correlated pairs of photons. A 50% probability to transform the stored excitation into one photon in a well-defined spatio-temporal mode at the output of the ensemble is demonstrated. These improvements are illustrated by the generation of high-quality heralded single photons with a suppression of the two-photon component below 1% of the value for a coherent state. A broad characterization of our system is performed for different parame…
We investigate spontaneous photon emission and absorption processes of two two-level atoms trapped close to the focal points of an ellipsoidal cavity, thereby taking into account the full multimode scenario. In particular, we calculate the excitation probabilities of the atoms by describing the field modes semiclassically. Based on this approach, we express the excitation probabilities by a semiclassical photon path representation. Due to the special property of an ellipsoidal cavity of having two focal points, we are able to study interesting intermediate instances between well-known quantum-…
We present a protocol for performing entanglement connection between pairs of atomic ensembles in the single excitation regime. Two pairs are prepared in an asynchronous fashion and then connected via a Bell measurement. The resulting state of the two remaining ensembles is mapped to photonic modes and a reduced density matrix is then reconstructed. Our observations confirm for the first time the creation of coherence between atomic systems that never interacted, a first step towards entanglement connection, a critical requirement for quantum networking and long distance quantum communications…
The cooperative resonance for a spin one half system interacting with dc and ac magnetic field is considered. This interaction in the system collective regime can result in parametic resonance and rapid excitation of the excited spin state of the dense atomic gas. The phenomenon is studied using the density matrix approach. We discuss the implementation of this effect and possible applications of the quantum amplification by superradiant emission of radiation.

We study the dynamics of a single excitation coherently shared amongst an ensemble of atoms and coupled to a one-dimensional wave guide. The coupling between the matter and the light field gives rise to collective phenomena such as superradiant states with an enhanced initial decay rate, but also to the coherent exchange of the excitation between the atoms. We find that the competition between the two phenomena provides a characteristic dynamics for the decay of the excitations, and remarkably exhibits an algebraic behavior, instead of the expected standard exponential one, for a large number …
Single photons are generated from an ensemble of cold Cs atoms via the protocol of Duan et al. [Nature \textbf{414}, 413 (2001)]. Conditioned upon an initial detection from field 1 at 852 nm, a photon in field 2 at 894 nm is produced in a controlled fashion from excitation stored within the atomic ensemble. The single-quantum character of the field 2 is demonstrated by the violation of a Cauchy-Schwarz inequality, namely $w(1_{2},1_{2}|1_{1})=0.24\pm 0.05\ngeq 1$, where $w(1_{2},1_{2}|1_{1})$ describes detection of two events $(1_{2},1_{2})$ conditioned upon an initial detection $1_{1}$, with …
We study the quantum statistical properties of the collective excitations of an atomic ensemble inside a high-finesse cavity. In the large-detuning regime, it is found that the virtual photon exchange can induce a long-range interaction between atoms, which results in correlated excitations. In particular, the atomic blockade phenomenon occurs when the induced long-range interaction effectively suppresses the double atomic excitation, when the average photon number takes certain values, which makes the two nearest energy levels degenerate. We also show that quantum phase transitions occur in t…
We systematically study the interaction between two quantized optical fields and a cyclic atomic ensemble driven by a classic optical field. This so-called atomic cyclic ensemble consists of three-level atoms with Delta-type transitions due to the symmetry breaking, which can also be implemented in the superconducting quantum circuit by Yu-xi Liu et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 087001 (2005)]. We explore the dynamic mechanisms to creating the quantum entanglements among photon states, and between photons and atomic collective excitations by the coherent manipulation of the atom-photon system. It …
We study photon emission by an ensemble of two-level systems, with strong inhomogeneous broadening and coupled to a cavity mode whose frequency has linear time-dependence. The analysis shows that, regardless the distribution of energy level splittings, a sharp phase transition occurs between the weak and strong cooperative emission phases near a critical photonic frequency sweeping rate. The associated scaling exponent is determined. We suggest that this phase transition can be observed in an ensemble of negatively charged NV centers in diamond interacting with a microwave half-wavelength cavi…
Ordered atomic arrays trapped in the vicinity of nanoscale waveguides offer original light-matter interfaces, with applications to quantum information and quantum non-linear optics. Here, we study the decay dynamics of a single collective atomic excitation coupled to a waveguide in different configurations. The atoms are arranged as a linear array and only a segment of them is excited to a superradiant mode and emits light into the waveguide. Additional atomic chains placed on one or both sides play a passive role, either reflecting or absorbing this emission. We show that when varying the geo…
Telecom photonic quantum networks with matter quantum systems enable a rich variety of applications, such as a long distance quantum cryptography and one-way quantum computing. Preparation of a heralded single excitation (HSE) in an atomic ensemble by detecting a telecom wavelength photon having a correlation with the atomic excitation is an important step. Such a system has been demonstrated with a quantum frequency conversion (QFC) to telecom wavelength employing a Rb atomic cloud. However the limited wavelength selection prevents the next step. Here we for the first time demonstrate HSE wit…
The dipole blockade of multiple Rydberg excitations in mesoscopic atomic ensembles allows the implementation of various quantum information tasks using collective states of cold, trapped atoms. Precise coherent manipulations of the collective ground and single Rydberg excitation states of an atomic ensemble requires the knowledge of the number of atoms with small uncertainty. We present an efficient method to acquire such information by interrogating the atomic ensemble with resonant pulses while monitoring the resulting Rydberg excitations. We show that after several such steps accompanied by…
The interaction between super-intense coherent x-ray light and nuclei is studied theoretically. One of the main difficulties with driving nuclear transitions arises from the very narrow nuclear excited state widths which limit the coupling between laser and nuclei. In the context of direct laser-nucleus interaction, we consider the nuclear width broadening that occurs when in solid targets, the excitation caused by a single photon is shared by a large number of nuclei, forming a collective excited state. Our results show that for certain isotopes, cooperative effects may lead to an enhancement…
It has been shown elsewhere that two spatially separated atoms can jointly absorb one photon, whose frequency is equal to the sum of the transition frequencies of the two atoms. We describe this process in the presence of an ensemble of many two-level atoms, and show that it can be used to generate spin squeezing and entanglement. This resonant collective process allows to create a sizeable squeezing already at the single-photon limit. It represents a novel way for generating manybody spin-spin interactions, yielding a two-axis twisting-like interaction among the spins, which is very effcient …
A critical requirement for diverse applications in Quantum Information Science is the capability to disseminate quantum resources over complex quantum networks. For example, the coherent distribution of entangled quantum states together with quantum memory to store these states can enable scalable architectures for quantum computation, communication, and metrology. As a significant step toward such possibilities, here we report observations of entanglement between two atomic ensembles located in distinct apparatuses on different tables. Quantum interference in the detection of a photon emitted…
We show that a cooperative atom response in an optical lattice to resonant incident light can be employed for precise control and manipulation of light on a subwavelength scale. Specific collective excitation modes of the system that result from strong light-mediated dipole-dipole interactions can be addressed by tailoring the spatial phase-profile of the incident light. We demonstrate how the collective response can be used to produce optical excitations at well-isolated sites on the lattice.
Single-photon cooperative dynamics of an assembly of two-level quantum emitters coupled by a bosonic bath are investigated. The bosonic bath is general and it can be anything as long as the exchange of excitations between quantum emitters and bath is present. In these systems, it is found that the population on the excited emitter keeps a simple and universal trapping law due to the existence of system's dark states. Different from the trapping regime caused by photonemitter dressed states, this type of trapping is only associated with the number of quantum emitters. According to the trapping …
The creation of single collective excitations in atomic ensembles via spontaneous Raman emission plays a key role in several quantum communication protocols, starting with the seminal DLCZ protocol [L.-M.Duan, M.D. Lukin, J.I. Cirac, and P. Zoller, Nature {\bf 414}, 413 (2001).] This process is usually analyzed theoretically under the assumptions that the write laser pulse inducing the Raman transition is far off-resonance, and that the atomic ensemble is only homogeneously broadened. Here we study the impact of near-resonance excitation for inhomogeneously broadened ensembles on the collectiv…
Entanglement between a single photon and a matter qubit is an indispensable resource for quantum repeater and quantum networks. With atomic ensembles, the entanglement creation probability is typically very low to inhibit high-order events. In this paper, we propose and experimentally realize a scheme which creates atom-photon entanglement with an intrinsic efficiency of 50%. We make use of Rydberg blockade to generate two collective excitations, lying in separate internal states. By introducing the momentum degree of freedom for the excitations, and interfering them via Raman coupling, we ent…
We investigate the collective interaction of a multi-atom three-level ladder system with an environmental incoherent reservoir. The exact solution of the master equation that describes such a system of atoms emitting distinguishable or indistinguishable photons on interaction with an incoherent reservoir is obtained. The quantum decay interference effects have no influences over steady-state distribution of population among the energy levels. However, the photon statistics of the collectively emitted photons are different in this case. In particular, the normalized second-order photon correlat…
We study the excitation dynamics of an inhomogeneously broadened spin ensemble coupled to a single cavity mode. The collective excitations of the spin ensemble can be described in terms of generalized spin waves and, in the absence of the cavity, the free evolution of the spin ensemble can be described as a drift in the wave number without dispersion. In this article we show that the dynamics in the presence of coupling to the cavity mode can be described solely by a modified time evolution of the wave numbers. In particular, we show that collective excitations with a well- defined wave number…
We analyze a 1-d ring structure composed of many two-levels systems, in the limit where only one excitation is present. The two-levels systems are coupled to a common environment, where the excitation can be lost, which induces super and subradiant behavior. Moreover, each two-levels system is coupled to another independent environment, modeled by a classical white noise, simulating a dephasing bath and described by the Haken-Strobl master equation. Single exciton Superradiance, an example of cooperative quantum coherent effect, is destroyed at a critical dephasing strength proportional to the…
It is shown that excitation spectra of Generalized Gibbs Ensembles (GGE) of one-dimensional integrable models with isotopic symmetry contain universal features insensitive to details of the distribution. Namely, the low energy limit of the subsystem of isotopic (for instance, spin) excitations is described by the effective action of a ferromagnet at thermodynamic equilibrium with a single temperature and with the stiffness determined by the initial conditions. The condition of universality is that the entropy per excited particle is small.
Long-lived quantum memories are essential components of a long-standing goal of remote distribution of entanglement in quantum networks. These can be realized by storing the quantum states of light as single-spin excitations in atomic ensembles. However, spin states are often subjected to different dephasing processes that limit the storage time, which in principle could be overcome using spin-echo techniques. Theoretical studies have suggested this to be challenging due to unavoidable spontaneous emission noise in ensemble-based quantum memories. Here we demonstrate spin-echo manipulation of …
In this paper, we report a generation of a spin-wave excitation (SWE) with a near-unity () probability in a given time (~730). Such deterministic generation relies on a feedback scheme with a millisecond quantum memory. The millisecond memory is achieved by maximizing the wavelength of the spin wave and storing the SWE as the magnetic-field-insensitive transition. We then demonstrate partial retrievals of the spin wave by applying a first read pulse whose area is smaller than the value of . The remained SWE is fully retrieved by a second pulse. Anti-correlation function between the detections …
In an ensemble of laser-driven atoms involving strongly interacting Rydberg states, the excitation probability is usually strongly suppressed. In contrast, here we identify a regime in which the steady-state Rydberg excited fraction is enhanced by the interaction. This effect is associated with the build-up of many-body coherences, induced by coherent multi-photon excitations between collective states. The excitation enhancement should be observable under currently-existing experimental conditions, and may serve as a direct probe for the presence of coherent multi-photon dynamics involving col…
Current proposals focusing on neutral atoms for quantum computing are mostly based on using single atoms as quantum bits (qubits), while using cavity induced coupling or dipole-dipole interaction for two-qubit operations. An alternative approach is to use atomic ensembles as qubits. However, when an atomic ensemble is excited, by a laser beam matched to a two-level transition (or a Raman transition) for example, it leads to a cascade of many states as more and more photons are absorbed^1. In order to make use of an ensemble as a qubit, it is necessary to disrupt this cascade, and restrict the …
We present here a microscopic analysis of the cooperative light scattering on an atomic system consisting of Λ-type configured atoms with the spin-degenerate ground state. The results are compared with a similar system consisting of standard "two-level" atoms of the Dicke model. We discuss advantages of the considered system in context of its possible implications for light storage in a macroscopic ensemble of dense and ultracold atoms.
We study resonant optical excitations of strongly-interacting Rydberg states of atoms in the presence of relaxations. We employ the quantum stochastic (Monte Carlo) wavefunctions to simulate the dissipative dynamics of tens of atoms in two-dimensional lattices. We show that under typical experimental conditions involving slow Rydberg state decay and sizable relaxation of atomic coherences, on the time scale of several microseconds the atomic ensemble approaches a stationary state in which much of the quantum correlations between the atoms have decayed away. The steady state, however, exhibits …
We demonstrate cavity sideband cooling of a single collective motional mode of an atomic ensemble down to a mean phonon occupation number of 2.0(-0.3/+0.9). Both this minimum occupation number and the observed cooling rate are in good agreement with an optomechanical model. The cooling rate constant is proportional to the total photon scattering rate by the ensemble, demonstrating the cooperative character of the light-emission-induced cooling process. We deduce fundamental limits to cavity-cooling either the collective mode or, sympathetically, the single-atom degrees of freedom.
