Dark sector may exist and interact with Standard Model (SM) through the $U(1)$ kinetic mixing. Through this portal-type interaction, dark photon from dark sector couples to SM fermions, and may explain the discrepancy between experimental data and SM calculations on muon anomalous magnetic moment, muon $g-2$. However, current searches for dark photon impose stringent constraints on the mixing parameter $\varepsilon$ for various dark photon masses, excluding the favorite parameter space for muon $g-2$. In this paper, we study the case where a global $U(1)$ in dark sector is spontaneously broken, resulting a light pseudo-Goldstone, axion-like particle (ALP) $a$, which couples to dark photon and SM photon, $g_{aγγ'}$. Through this interaction, dark photon may decay into photon and ALP when this channel is kinematically allowed. As a result, the experimental constraints on dark photon change significantly, and dark photon is able to explain the muon $g-2$ anomaly when its mass is heavier than $10$ GeV.
Axion like particles(ALPs) and right handed neutrinos~(RHNs) are two well-motivated dark matter(DM) candidates. However, these two particles have a completely different origin. Axion was proposed to solve the Strong CP problem, whereas RHNs were introduced to explain light neutrino masses through seesaw mechanisms. We study the case of ALP portal RHN DM taking into account existing constraints on ALPs. We consider the leading effective operators mediating interactions between the ALP and SM particles and three RHNs to generate light neutrino masses through type-I seesaw. Further, ALP-RHN neutr…
High-intensity photon beams can provide for a viable probe for many particles of Standard Model extensions. This workshop contribution briefly reviews the status of the second stage of the Any Light Particle Search (ALPS-II) at DESY, an experiment of the light-shining-through-a-wall type, as well as an idea to test asymptotically safe quantum gravity in a photon-scattering experiment.
Although axion-like particles (ALPs) are popular dark matter candidates, their mass generation mechanisms as well as cosmic thermal evolutions are still unclear. In this letter, we propose a new mass generation mechanism of ALP during the electroweak phase transition in the presence of the type-II seesaw mechanism. As ALP gets mass uniquely at the electroweak scale, there is a cutoff scale on the ALP oscillation temperature irrelevant to the specific mass of ALP, which is a distinctive feature of this scenario. The ALP couples to the active neutrinos, leaving the matter effect of neutrino osci…

We discuss constraints on soft CP-violating couplings of axion-like particles with photon and fermions by using data on electric dipole moments of Standard Model particles. In particular, for the ALP leptophilic scenario we derive bounds on CP-odd ALP-photon-photon coupling from data of the {\tt ACME} Collaboration on electron EDM. We also discuss prospects of the Storage Ring experiment to constrain the ALP-photon-photon coupling from data on proton EDM for the simplified hadrophilic interactions of ALP. The regarding constraints from experimental bounds on the muon and neutron EDMs are weak.…
In many approaches to describe physics beyond the standard model, light Nambu-Goldstone bosons (named axion-like particles or ALPS for their similarity with the axion) are predicted to exist. For ALPs with a mass of neV, photon-ALPs oscillation takes place in extra-galactic magnetic fields during the propagation of very high energy gamma-ray photons leading to excess radiation observed for optically thick sources. In order to verify this effect, gamma-ray spectra from strong Galactic plane or non-galactic plane sources can be used and the photon-ALPs mixing would lead to an energy dependent su…

We show that an axionlike particle (ALP) naturally implements spontaneous electroweak baryogenesis through a cosmic evolution strongly tied to the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) if it feebly couples to the Higgs field while giving a small contribution to the Higgs boson mass. The observed baryon asymmetry can be generated successfully if the ALP couples strongly enough to the electroweak anomaly. Also interesting is that the ALP contributes to dark matter, and its coupling to a hidden gauge sector makes the relic abundance insensitive to the cosmic history before the EWPT. The ALP explain…
The axion-like particles (ALPs) are very good candidates of the cosmological dark matter, which can exist in many extensions of the standard model (SM). The mass range of the ALPs as the dark matter can extend from a sub-eV scale to almost $10^{-22}~{\rm eV}$. On the other hand, the neutrinos are found to be massive and the SM must be extended to explain the sub-eV neutrino masses. It becomes very interesting to consider an exclusive coupling between these two low scale frontiers that are both beyond the SM. The propagation of neutrinos inside the Milky Way would undergo the coherent forward s…
We propose a mechanism generating primordial magnetic fields after the $e^+e^-$ annihilations. Our mechanism involves an ultra-light axion-like particle (ALP) which constitutes the dark matter, and a dark $U(1)_X$ gauge boson introduced to bypass the obstacle placed by the conductivity of cosmic plasma. In our scheme, a coherently oscillating ALP amplifies the dark photon field, and part of the amplified dark photon field is concurrently converted to the ordinary magnetic field through the ALP-induced magnetic mixing. For the relevant ALP mass range $10^{-21} {\rm eV}\lesssim m_ϕ\lesssim 10^{-…
We use MUSE spectroscopic observations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Leo T between 470 and 935 nm to search for radiative decays of axion like particles (ALPs). Under the assumption that ALPs constitute the dark matter component of the Leo T halo, we derive bounds on the effective ALP-two-photon coupling. We improve existing limits by more than one order of magnitude in the ALP mass range 2.7-5.3 eV.
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are very light, neutral, spin zero bosons predicted by many theories which try to complete the standard model of elementary particles. ALPs interact primarily with two photons and can generate photon-ALP oscillations in the presence of an external magnetic field. They are attracting increasing interest since photon-ALP oscillations produce deep consequences in very-high-energy (VHE) astrophysics. Two hints for the existence of an ALP have recently been proposed. In this paper, we study another effect of the photon-ALP interaction: the change of the polarization stat…

We study portal interactions connecting visible and dark sectors, and involving local interactions of a photon, a dark photon and a axion-like particle (ALP) at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. These interactions, mediated by higher-dimensional effective operators, may arise at one-loop by kinetic mixing between dark and ordinary photons, or, for massless dark photons, by direct short-distance contributions. We explore these portal interactions for a heavy ALP with masses between about 10 GeV and 230 GeV by investigating the sensitivity of the production $e^+e^- \to γγ\barγ$ to the effective couplin…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are very light, neutral, spin zero bosons predicted by superstring theory. ALPs interact primarily with two photons and in the presence of an external magnetic field they generate photon-ALP oscillations and the change of the polarization state of photons. While well motivated from a theoretical point of view, hints on ALP existence come from astrophysics. In this paper, we state and demonstrate some theorems about a strict relationship between initial photon polarization and photon-ALP conversion probability - which can be extrapolated by observed astrophysical spe…

Axion-like particles (ALPs) and Higgs bosons can interact in scalar sectors beyond the Standard Model, leading the Higgs boson to decay into pairs of gluons and photons through the ALP interaction and giving rise to resonances in the decay products of the process $h\to aa\to gg+γγ$, resembling a spectral lines analysis. We explore this signature to constrain an ALP effective field theory formulation and show that the forthcoming runs of the LHC will be capable to probe the ALP-Higgs interaction in the ALP mass range from 0.5 to 60 GeV using an automatized search strategy that adapts to differe…
String scenarios typically not only predict axion-like particles (ALPs) but also significant amounts of ALP dark radiation originating from the decay of the inflaton or a more general modulus. In this paper, we study the decay of such non-thermally produced relativistic (but massive) ALPs to photons. If the ALPs are sufficiently highly energetic, contribute to $ΔN_{\rm eff} \gtrsim {\cal O}(0.001)$ and have a mass $m_a\gtrsim$ MeV we find that, using observations of X-, and $γ$-rays, the CMB and BBN, very small values of the ALP-photon coupling can be probed, corresponding to an origin of this…
Axion like particles (ALPs) are fundamental pseudo scalar particles with properties similar to Axions which are a well-known extension of the standard model to solve the strong CP problem in Quantum Chromodynamics. ALPs can oscillate into photons and vice versa in the presence of an external tranversal magnetic field. This oscillation of photon and ALPs could have important implications for astronomical observations, i.e. a characteristic energy dependent attenuation in Gamma ray spectra for astrophysical sources. Here we have revisited the opportunity to search Photon-ALPs coupling in the dis…
We present an analysis of high-resolution N-body simulations of decaying dark matter cosmologies focusing on the statistical properties of the transmitted Lyman-alpha forest flux in the high-redshift intergalactic medium. In this type of model a dark matter particle decays into a slightly less massive stable dark matter daughter particle and a comparably light particle. The small mass splitting provides a non-relativistic kick velocity V_k to the daughter particle resulting in free-streaming and subsequent damping of small-scale density fluctuations. Current Lyman-alpha forest power spectrum m…
We investigate the phenomenological consequences of axion-like particle (ALP) dark matter with an early matter domination triggered by primordial black holes (PBHs). We focus on light BHs with masses smaller than $\sim 10^9~$g which fully evaporate before Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We numerically solve the coupled Boltzmann equations, carefully taking the greybody factors and BH angular momentum into account. We find that the entropy injection from PBH evaporation dilutes the ALP relic abundance originally produced via the vacuum misalignment mechanism, opening the parameter space with larger s…
Magnetic fields in extragalactic space between galaxy clusters may induce conversions between photons and axion-like particles (ALPs), thereby shielding the photons from absorption on the extragalactic background light. For TeV gamma rays, the oscillation length ($l_{\rm osc}$) of the photon-ALP system becomes inevitably of the same order as the coherence length of the magnetic field ($l$) and the length over which the field changes significantly (transition length $l_{\rm t}$) due to refraction on background photons. We derive exact statistical evolution equations for the mean and variance of…
The propagation of TeV gamma rays can be strongly modified by B-field induced conversion to axionlike particles (ALPs). We show that, at such high energies, photon dispersion is dominated by background photons - the only example where photon-photon dispersion is of practical relevance. We determine the refractive index for all energies and find that, for fixed energy density, background photons below the pair-production threshold dominate. The cosmic microwave background alone provides an "effective photon mass" of (m_gamma)^2 = -(1.01 neV * E/TeV)^2 for E < 1000 TeV. The extragalactic backgro…
We determine limits from SN 1987A on massive axion-like particles (ALPs) with masses in the 10 keV - 100 MeV range and purely coupled to two photons. ALPs produced in the core collapse escape from the star and decay into photons that can be observed as a delayed and diffuse burst. We discuss the time and angular distribution of such a signal. Looking into the future we also estimate the possible improvements if the red supergiant Betelgeuse explodes in a supernova event.
We study photon-ALP conversion by resonance effects in the magnetized plasma of galaxy clusters and compare the predicted distortion of the cosmic microwave background spectrum in the direction of such objects to measurements of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. Using galaxy cluster models based on current knowledge, we obtain upper limits on the photon-ALP coupling constant $g$ of $\lesssim \mathcal{O}(10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$). The constraints apply to the mass range of $2\cdot 10^{-14}$ eV $ \lesssim m_\text{ALP} \lesssim 3\cdot 10^{-12}$ eV in which resonant photon-ALP conversions can occu…
Adding an axion-like particle (ALP) to the Standard Model, with a field velocity in the early universe, simultaneously explains the observed baryon and dark matter densities. This requires one or more couplings between the ALP and photons, nucleons, and/or electrons that are predicted as functions of the ALP mass. These predictions arise because the ratio of dark matter to baryon densities is independent of the ALP field velocity, allowing a correlation between the ALP mass, $m_a$, and decay constant, $f_a$. The predicted couplings are orders of magnitude larger than those for the QCD axion an…
Recently it has been noticed that the Fermi-LAT data of gamma-rays from some galactic pulsars and supernova remnants reveal spectral modulations that might be explained by the conversion of photons to ALPs (axion-like particles) induced by the conventional ALP coupling to photon in the presence of galactic magnetic fields. However the corresponding ALP mass and coupling are in a severe tension with the observational constraints from CAST, SN1987A, and other gamma-ray observations. Motivated by this, we examine an alternative possibility that those spectral modulations are explained by other ty…
We revisit the adiabatic conversion between the QCD axion and axion-like particle (ALP) at level crossing, which can occur in the early universe as a result of the existence of a hypothetical mass mixing. This is similar to the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effect in neutrino oscillations. After refining the conditions for the adiabatic conversion to occur, we focus on a scenario where the ALP produced by the adiabatic conversion of the QCD axion explains the observed dark matter abundance. Interestingly, we find that the ALP decay constant can be much smaller than the ordinary case in which th…
We consider the search for axion-like particles (ALPs) by using time series data of the polarization angle of the light. If the condensation of an ALP plays the role of dark matter, the polarization plane of the light oscillates as a function of time and we may be able to detect the signal of the ALP by continuously observing the polarization. In particular, we discuss that the analysis of the Fourier-transformed data of the time-dependent polarization angle is powerful to find the signal of the ALP dark matter. We pay particular attention to the light coming from astrophysical sources such as…
The very low mass and small coupling of axion-like particles (ALPs) is usually taken as a guarantor of their cosmological longevity, making them excellent dark matter candidates. That said, Bose enhancement could stimulate decays and challenge this paradigm. Here, we analyze and review the cosmological decay of ALPs into photons, taking Bose enhancement into account, thereby going beyond the usual naive perturbative estimate. At first glance, this calculation seems to yield an exponentially growing resonance and therefore an extremely fast decay rate. However, the redshifting of the decay prod…
The recent XENON1T excess in the electron recoil data can be explained by anomaly-free axion-like particle (ALP) dark matter with mass $m_ϕ= 2.3 \pm 0.2\,$keV and the decay constant $f_ϕ/q_e \simeq 2 \times 10^{10} \sqrt{Ω_ϕ/Ω_{\rm DM}}\,{\rm GeV}$. Intriguingly, the suggested mass and decay constant are consistent with the relation, $f_ϕ\sim 10^3 \sqrt{m_ϕM_p}$, predicted in a scenario where the ALP plays the role of the inflaton. This raises a possibility that the ALP dark matter responsible for the XENON1T excess also drove inflation in the very early universe. We study implications of the …
Axion-like particles (ALPs), which are very light neutral spin zero elusive particles primarily interacting with two photons and predicted by superstring and superbrane theories, have come to help by solving two distinct problems about blazars (a type of active galactic nuclei), thus providing two hints at the existence of ALPs themselves. In the presence of an external magnetic field, ALPs produce: (i) photon-ALP oscillations, (ii) the change of the polarization state of photons. The former effect has many consequences in the astrophysical contest, such as the modification of the transparency…
The recent observation of the 21-cm absorption signal by the EDGES experiment provides a new observational window into the dynamics of the young Universe. Based on this result, we constrain the properties of ALPs and excited dark matter via the energy injections into the gaseous medium that these models produce. In particular, we derive bounds that outperform the present constraints for energy injections in the 10.2 eV to 50 keV range by analysing the intensity of Lyman-$α$ photons and the electron emissivity produced by ionising radiation. Our results also show that once the standard temperat…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) are predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model (SM). When ALP mass lies in the range of MeV to GeV, the cosmology and astrophysics will be largely irrelevant. In this work, we investigate such light ALPs through the ALP-strahlung process $pp \to V a (\to γγ)$ at the 14 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of 3000 fb$^{-1}$ (HL-LHC). With the photon-jet algorithm, we demonstrate that our approach can probe the mass range of ALPs, which is inaccessible to previous LHC experiments. The obtained result can surpass the existing limits on ALP-photon coupling in t…
Cosmic birefringence is predicted if an axion-like particle (ALP) moves after the recombination. We show that this naturally happens if the ALP is coupled to the dark matter density because it then acquires a large effective mass after the matter-radiation equality. Our scenario applies to a broad range of the ALP mass $m_ϕ\lesssim 10^{-28}$ eV, even smaller than the present Hubble constant. We give a simple model to realize this scenario, where dark matter is made of hidden monopoles, which give the ALP such a large effective mass through the Witten effect. The mechanism works if the ALP deca…
Axion-like particles (ALPs) might constitute the totality of the cold dark matter (CDM) observed. The parameter space of ALPs depends on the mass of the particle $m$ and on the energy scale of inflation $H_I$ , the latter being bound by the non-detection of primordial gravitational waves. We show that the bound on HI implies the existence of a mass scale $m_χ= 10 {\rm \,neV} ÷ 0.5 {\rm \,peV}$, depending on the ALP susceptibility $χ$, such that the energy density of ALPs of mass smaller than $m_χ$ is too low to explain the present CDM budget, if the ALP field has originated after the end of in…
