Efficient categorization of historical documents is crucial for fields such as genealogy, legal research, and historical scholarship, where manual classification is impractical for large collections due to its labor-intensive and error-prone nature. To address this, we propose a representational learning strategy that integrates semantic segmentation and deep learning models such as ResNet, CLIP, Document Image Transformer (DiT), and masked auto-encoders (MAE), to generate embeddings that capture document features without predefined labels. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to evaluate embeddings on fine-grained, unsupervised form classification. To improve these embeddings, we propose to first employ semantic segmentation as a preprocessing step. We contribute two novel datasets$\unicode{x2014}$the French 19th-century and U.S. 1950 Census records$\unicode{x2014}$to demonstrate our approach. Our results show the effectiveness of these various embedding techniques in distinguishing similar document types and indicate that applying semantic segmentation can greatly improve clustering and classification results. The two-stage methods for instance segmentation, e.g. Mask R-CNN, have achieved excellent performance recently. However, the segmented masks are still very coarse due to the downsampling operations in both the feature pyramid and the instance-wise pooling process, especially for large objects. In this work, we propose a new method called RefineMask for high-quality instance segmentation of objects and scenes, which incorporates fine-grained features during the instance-wise segmenting process in a multi-stage manner. Through fusing more detailed information stage by stage, RefineMask is able t…

We study few-shot semantic segmentation that aims to segment a target object from a query image when provided with a few annotated support images of the target class. Several recent methods resort to a feature masking (FM) technique to discard irrelevant feature activations which eventually facilitates the reliable prediction of segmentation mask. A fundamental limitation of FM is the inability to preserve the fine-grained spatial details that affect the accuracy of segmentation mask, especially for small target objects. In this paper, we develop a simple, effective, and efficient approach to …

In this paper, we tackle the challenging task of unsupervised salient object detection (SOD) by leveraging spectral clustering on self-supervised features. We make the following contributions: (i) We revisit spectral clustering and demonstrate its potential to group the pixels of salient objects; (ii) Given mask proposals from multiple applications of spectral clustering on image features computed from various self-supervised models, e.g., MoCov2, SwAV, DINO, we propose a simple but effective winner-takes-all voting mechanism for selecting the salient masks, leveraging object priors based on f…

Fine-grained image recognition is a challenging computer vision problem, due to the small inter-class variations caused by highly similar subordinate categories, and the large intra-class variations in poses, scales and rotations. In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end Mask-CNN model without the fully connected layers for fine-grained recognition. Based on the part annotations of fine-grained images, the proposed model consists of a fully convolutional network to both locate the discriminative parts (e.g., head and torso), and more importantly generate object/part masks for selecting use…
In order to function in unstructured environments, robots need the ability to recognize unseen novel objects. We take a step in this direction by tackling the problem of segmenting unseen object instances in tabletop environments. However, the type of large-scale real-world dataset required for this task typically does not exist for most robotic settings, which motivates the use of synthetic data. We propose a novel method that separately leverages synthetic RGB and synthetic depth for unseen object instance segmentation. Our method is comprised of two stages where the first stage operates onl…

In this work we explore the task of instance segmentation with attribute localization, which unifies instance segmentation (detect and segment each object instance) and fine-grained visual attribute categorization (recognize one or multiple attributes). The proposed task requires both localizing an object and describing its properties. To illustrate the various aspects of this task, we focus on the domain of fashion and introduce Fashionpedia as a step toward mapping out the visual aspects of the fashion world. Fashionpedia consists of two parts: (1) an ontology built by fashion experts contai…
In this work, we present a novel mask guided attention (MGA) method for fine-grained patchy image classification. The key challenge of fine-grained patchy image classification lies in two folds, ultra-fine-grained inter-category variances among objects and very few data available for training. This motivates us to consider employing more useful supervision signal to train a discriminative model within limited training samples. Specifically, the proposed MGA integrates a pre-trained semantic segmentation model that produces auxiliary supervision signal, i.e., patchy attention mask, enabling a d…
While the fine-grained visual categorization (FGVC) problems have been greatly developed in the past years, the Ultra-fine-grained visual categorization (Ultra-FGVC) problems have been understudied. FGVC aims at classifying objects from the same species (very similar categories), while the Ultra-FGVC targets at more challenging problems of classifying images at an ultra-fine granularity where even human experts may fail to identify the visual difference. The challenges for Ultra-FGVC mainly comes from two aspects: one is that the Ultra-FGVC often arises overfitting problems due to the lack of …
In this paper, we propose a multi-stage and high-resolution model for image synthesis that uses fine-grained attributes and masks as input. With a fine-grained attribute, the proposed model can detailedly constrain the features of the generated image through rich and fine-grained semantic information in the attribute. With mask as prior, the model in this paper is constrained so that the generated images conform to visual senses, which will reduce the unexpected diversity of samples generated from the generative adversarial network. This paper also proposes a scheme to improve the discriminato…

Discriminative representation is essential to keep a unique identifier for each target in Multiple object tracking (MOT). Some recent MOT methods extract features of the bounding box region or the center point as identity embeddings. However, when targets are occluded, these coarse-grained global representations become unreliable. To this end, we propose exploring diverse fine-grained representation, which describes appearance comprehensively from global and local perspectives. This fine-grained representation requires high feature resolution and precise semantic information. To effectively al…

We present a novel paradigm for high-fidelity face swapping that faithfully preserves the desired subtle geometry and texture details. We rethink face swapping from the perspective of fine-grained face editing, \textit{i.e., ``editing for swapping'' (E4S)}, and propose a framework that is based on the explicit disentanglement of the shape and texture of facial components. Following the E4S principle, our framework enables both global and local swapping of facial features, as well as controlling the amount of partial swapping specified by the user. Furthermore, the E4S paradigm is inherently ca…

In this paper, we propose Suppression-Enhancing Mask based attention and Interactive Channel transformatiON (SEMICON) to learn binary hash codes for dealing with large-scale fine-grained image retrieval tasks. In SEMICON, we first develop a suppression-enhancing mask (SEM) based attention to dynamically localize discriminative image regions. More importantly, different from existing attention mechanism simply erasing previous discriminative regions, our SEM is developed to restrain such regions and then discover other complementary regions by considering the relation between activated regions …

Fine-grained image classification is a challenging computer vision task where various species share similar visual appearances, resulting in misclassification if merely based on visual clues. Therefore, it is helpful to leverage additional information, e.g., the locations and dates for data shooting, which can be easily accessible but rarely exploited. In this paper, we first demonstrate that existing multimodal methods fuse multiple features only on a single dimension, which essentially has insufficient help in feature discrimination. To fully explore the potential of multimodal information, …

We address the use of selfie ocular images captured with smartphones to estimate age and gender. Partial face occlusion has become an issue due to the mandatory use of face masks. Also, the use of mobile devices has exploded, with the pandemic further accelerating the migration to digital services. However, state-of-the-art solutions in related tasks such as identity or expression recognition employ large Convolutional Neural Networks, whose use in mobile devices is infeasible due to hardware limitations and size restrictions of downloadable applications. To counteract this, we adapt two exist…
