We propose a laser resonance chromatography (LRC) experiment on $^{229}$Th$^{3+}$, with the goal of detecting the ion's electronic ground $5f$ $^2$F$_{5/2}$ state and metastable $7s$ $^2$S$_{1/2}$ state by means of their ion mobilities. To this end, we first model the ion-neutral interaction potentials for the two electronic states with a relativistic Fock space coupled cluster method and complete basis-set extrapolation scheme. The interaction potentials are used to simulate the state-specific reduced ion mobilities in terms of the operating temperature and the external electric field. The ion mobilities differ by more than 7% at 300 K and moderate field strengths; thus, separation of the $^{229}$Th$^{3+}$ metastable state lies within the reach of LRC experiments targeting optical probing and monitoring of the nuclear clock transition in this isotope.
Optical spectroscopy constitutes the historical path to accumulate basic knowledge on the atom and its structure. Former work based on fluorescence and resonance ionization spectroscopy enabled identifying optical spectral lines up to element 102, nobelium. The new challenges faced in this research field are the refractory nature of the heavier elements and the decreasing production yields. A new concept of ion-mobility-assisted laser spectroscopy is proposed to overcome the sensitivity limits of atomic structure investigations persisting in the region of the superheavy elements. The concept o…
Double electron ionisation process occurs when an intense laser pulse interacts with atoms or molecules. Exact {\it ab initio} numerical simulation of such a situation is extremely computer resources demanding, thus often one is forced to apply reduced dimensionality models to get insight into the physics of the process. The performance of several algorithms for simulating double electron ionization by strong femtosecond laser pulses are studied. The obtained ionization yields and the momentum distributions of the released electrons are compared, and the effects of the model dimensionality on …
When a laser pulse impinges on a molecule which is invariant under certain symmetry operations selection rules for harmonic generation (HG) arise. In other words: symmetry controls which channels are open for the deposition and emission of laser energy---with the possible application of filtering or amplification. We review the derivation of HG selection rules and study numerically the interaction of laser pulses with an effectively one-dimensional ring-shaped model molecule. The harmonic yields obtained from that model and their dependence on laser frequency and intensity are discussed. In a …
In parallel with the evolution of femtosecond and attosecond laser as well as free-electron laser technology, a variety of theoretical methods have been developed to describe the behavior of atoms, molecules, clusters, and solids under the action of those laser pulses. Here we review major ab initio wave-function-based numerical approaches to simulate multielectron dynamics in atoms and molecules driven by intense long-wavelength and/or ultrashort short-wavelength laser pulses. Direct solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE), though its applicability is limited to He, ${\rm H…
Electronic structure enhancement factors of simultaneous parity and time-reversal violation ($\mathcal{P,T}$-violation) caused by an electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM) and scalar-pseudoscalar nucleon-electron current (SPNEC) interactions are reported for various metal mono-hydroxides, several of which are considered laser--coolable and promising candidates for an eEDM measurement. Electronic structure enhancements are calculated \textit{ab initio} within zeroth order regular approximation (ZORA) for CaOH, SrOH, BaOH, RaOH and YbOH. Scaling behavior with respect to nuclear charge num…
Recently a breakthrough has been achieved in laser-spectroscopic studies of short-lived radioactive compounds with the first measurements of the radium monofluoride molecule (RaF) UV/vis spectra. We report results from high accuracy \emph{ab initio} calculations of the RaF electronic structure for ground and low-lying excited electronic states. Two different methods agree excellently with experimental excitation energies from the electronic ground state to the $^2Π_{1/2}$ and $^2Π_{3/2}$ states, but lead consistently and unambiguously to deviations from experimental-based adiabatic transition …
In this work, the controversy between the interpretations of recent measurements on dense aluminum plasma created with Linac coherent light sources (LCLS) X-ray free electron laser (FEL) and Orion laser has been addressed. In both kind of experiments, helium-like and hydrogen-like spectral lines are used for plasma diagnostics . However, there exist no precise theoretical calculations for He-like ions within dense plasma environment. The strong need for an accurate theoretical estimates for spectral properties of He-like ions in strongly coupled plasma environment leads us to perform ab initio…
A simple, analytical, nonrelativistic ionization rate formula for atoms and positive ions in intense ultraviolet and x-ray electromagnetic fields is derived. The rate is valid at arbitrary values of the Keldysh parameter and confirmed by results from ab initio numerical solutions of the single active electron, time-dependent Schroedinger equation. The proposed rate is particularly relevant for experiments employing the new free electron laser (FEL) sources under construction worldwide.
We present a new theoretical approach to attosecond laser-assisted photo- and Compton ionization. Attosecond x-ray absorption and scattering are described by $\hat{\mathrsfs{S}}^{(1,2)}$-matrices, which are coherent superpositions of "monochromatic" $\hat{S}^{(1,2)}$-matrices in a laser-modified Furry representation. Besides refining the existing theory of the soft x-ray photoelectron attosecond streak camera and spectral phase interferometry (ASC and ASPI), we formulate a theory of hard x-ray photoelectron and Compton ASC and ASPI. The resulting scheme has a simple structure and leads to clos…
The generation of harmonics by atoms interacting with two circularly polarized and frequency related laser fields is addressed through ab initio numerical simulations. A detailed charaterization of a few specific harmonics is given. In particular, the two different cases where the total energy absorbed through photons is far-off or close to the energy gap between different atomic states are investigated. It is found that the conversion efficiency in the harmonic generation is strongly dependent on the inner atomic structure and in certain specific cases it can be significantly enhanced within …
The photoionisation of rubidium in strong infra-red laser fields based on ab initio calculations was investigated. The bound and the continuum states are described with Slater orbitals and Coulomb wave packets, respectively. The bound state spectra were calculated with the variational method and we found it reproduced the experimental data within a few percent accuracy. Using the similar approach, ionisation of Rb was also successfully investigated. The effects of the shape and the parameters of the pulse to the photoionisation probabilities and the energy spectrum of the ionised electron are …
We present an {\it ab initio} and non-perturbative time-dependent approach to the problem of double ionization of a general atom driven by intense XUV laser pulses. After using a highly flexible $B$-Spline $R$-matrix method to generate field-free Hamiltonian and electric dipole matrices, the initial state is propagated in time using an efficient Arnoldi-Lanczos scheme. Test calculations for double ionization of He by a single laser pulse yield good agreement with benchmark results obtained with other methods. The method is then applied to two-color pump-probe processes, for which momentum and …
We report calculation of the energy spectrum and the spectroscopic properties of the superheavy element ion: Rf^+. We use the 4-component relativistic Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian and the multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) model to tackle the complex electronic structure problem that combines strong relativistic effects and electron correlation. We determine the energies of the ground and the low-lying excited states of Rf+, which originate from the 7s^26d^1, 7s^16d^2, 7s^27p^1, and 7s^16d^17p^1 configurations. The results are discussed vis-à-vis the lighter homologue, Hf^+ ion. We a…
We present ab initio studies of photoelectron spectra for above threshold detachment (ATD) of F$^-$ anions in short, 1300 nm and 1800 nm laser pulses. We identify and assess the importance of electron rescattering in strong-field photodetachment of a negative ion through comparison with an analytic, Keldysh-type approach, demonstrating the capability of ab-initio computation in the challenging near-IR regime. We further assess the influence of the strong electron correlation on the photodetachment.
We study numerically the interaction between an intense circularly polarized laser field and an electron moving in a potential which has a discrete cylindrical symmetry with respect to the laser pulse propagation direction. This setup serves as a simple model, e.g., for benzene and other aromatic compounds. From general symmetry considerations, within a Floquet approach, selection rules for the harmonic generation [O. Alon Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 3743 (1998)] have been derived recently. Instead, the results we present in this paper have been obtained solving the time-dependent Schroedinger equatio…
We study the ionization of atomic hydrogen in the direction of polarization due to a linearly polarized XUV pulse in the presence a strong field IR. We describe the photoelectron spectra as an interference problem in the time domain. Electron trajectories steming from different optical laser cycles give rise to intercycle interference energy peaks known as sidebands. These sidebands are modulated by a grosser structure coming from the intracycle interference of the two electron trajectories born during the same optical cycle. We make use of a simple semiclassical model which offers the possibi…
Large-scale $\textit{ab initio}$ calculations of the electric field gradient, which constitutes the electronic contribution to the electric quadrupole hyperfine constant $B$, were performed for the $5s^25p6s$ $^{1,3}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ excited states of tin, using three independent computational strategies of the variational multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method and a fourth approach based on the configuration interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm theory. For the $5s^25p6s$ $^{1}\!P^{\rm o}_1$ state, the final value of $B/Q =703(50)$ MHz/b differs by $0.4\%$ from the one recently used by Yordanov ${\…
The generation of harmonics by atoms or ions in a two-color, coplanar field configuration with commensurate frequencies is investigated through both, an analytical calculation based on the Lewenstein model and the numerical ab initio solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation of a two-dimensional model ion. Through the analytical model, selection rules for the harmonic orders in this field configuration, a generalized cut-off for the harmonic spectra, and an integral expression for the harmonic dipole strength is provided. The numerical results are employed to test the predictions of…
We present a time-dependent density-functional method able to describe the photoelectron spectrum of atoms and molecules when excited by laser pulses. This computationally feasible scheme is based on a geometrical partitioning that efficiently gives access to photoelectron spectroscopy in time-dependent density-functional calculations. By using a geometrical approach, we provide a simple description of momentum-resolved photoe- mission including multi-photon effects. The approach is validated by comparison with results in the literature and exact calculations. Furthermore, we present numerical…
We discuss harmonic generation in the case of laser field-dressed Hamiltonians that are invariant under so-called dynamical symmetry operations. Examples for such systems are molecules which exhibit a discrete rotational symmetry of order N (e.g. benzene with N=6) interacting with a circularly polarized laser field and single atoms in a bichromatic field, with the two lasers having circular polarizations. Within a general group theory approach we study the harmonics one obtains from the interaction of a laser pulse and a circular molecule. When the system is in a pure field-dressed state the k…
We present a novel ab-initio single-electron approach to correlated electron dynamics in strong laser fields. By writing the electronic wavefunction as a product of a marginal one-electron wavefunction and a conditional wavefunction, we show that the exact harmonic spectrum can be obtained from a single-electron Schrödinger equation. To obtain the one-electron potential in practice, we propose an adiabatic approximation, i.e. a potential is generated that depends only on the position of one electron. This potential, together with the laser interaction, is then used to obtain the dynamics of th…
Simulations of radiation damage in single molecule imaging using a X-ray free electron laser use atomic rates calculated in the lowest order. We investigate the difference in ion yield predictions using Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Fock-Slater pproximations for light and heavy elements of biological significance. The results show that for the biologically abundant elements of the second and third rows of the periodic table both approximations agree to about 6%. For the heavier elements beyond the fourth row the discrepancy rices to 11% for the range of the pulse parameters covered in this work. Pr…
We present the time-dependent complete-active-space self-consistent-field (TD-CASSCF) method to simulate multielectron dynamics in ultrafast intense laser fields from the first principles. While based on multiconfiguration expansion, it divides the orbital space into frozen-core (tightly bound electrons with no response to the field), dynamical-core (electrons tightly bound but responding to the field), and active (fully correlated to describe highly excited and ejected electrons) orbital subspaces. The subspace decomposition can be done flexibly, conforming to phenomena under investigation an…
Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is predicted for x rays in laser-dressed neon gas. The x-ray photoabsorption cross section and polarizability near the Ne K edge are calculated using an ab initio theory suitable for optical strong-field problems. The laser wavelength is tuned close to the transition between 1s^-1 3s and 1s^-1 3p (approximately 800nm). The minimum laser intensity required to observe EIT is of the order of 10^12 W/cm^2. The ab initio results are discussed in terms of an exactly solvable three-level model. This work opens new opportunities for research with ultrafas…
We study ab initio computations of the interaction of Lithium with a strong laser field. Numerical solutions of the time-dependent fully-correlated three-particle Schroedinger equation restricted to the one-dimensional soft-core approximation are presented. Our results show a clear transition from non-sequential to sequential double ionization for increasing intensities. Non sequential double ionization is found to be sensitive to the spin configuration of the ionized pair. This asymmetry, also found in experiments of photoionization of Li with synchrotron radiation, shows the evidence of the …

Relativistic ab initio study on the spectroscopic and radiative properties of the lowest states and modeling of the optical cycles for the LiFr molecule
We present an \emph{ab-initio} approach for computing the photoionization spectrum near autoionization resonances in multi-electron systems. While traditional (Hermitian) theories typically require computing the continuum states, which are difficult to obtain with high accuracy, our non-Hermitian approach requires only discrete bound and metastable states, which are accurately computed with advanced quantum chemistry tools. We derive a simple formula for the absorption lineshape near Fano resonances, which relates the asymmetry of the spectral peaks to the phase of the complex transition dipol…
We describe a laser spectroscopic study of ytterbium monomethoxide, YbOCH$_3$, a species of interest to searches for time-reversal symmetry violation using laser-cooled molecules. We report measurements of vibrational structure in the $\tilde{X}$ and $\tilde{A}$ states, vibrational branching ratios for several components of the $\tilde{A}$ state, and radiative lifetimes of low-lying electronic states. $\textit{Ab initio}$ calculations are used to aid the assignment of vibronic emission bands and provide insight into the electronic and vibrational structure. Our results demonstrate that rapid o…
We propose a general technique to retrieve the information of dipole-forbidden resonances in the autoionizing region. In the simulation, a helium atom is pumped by an isolated attosecond pulse in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) combined with a few-femtosecond laser pulse. The excited wave packet consists of the $^1S$, $^1P$, and $^1D$ states, including the background continua, near the $2s2p(^1P)$ doubly excited state. The resultant electron spectra with various laser intensities and time delays between the EUV and laser pulses are obtained by a multilevel model and an ab initio time-dependent S…
A second plateau in the harmonic spectra of laser-driven two-electron atoms is observed both in the numerical solution of a low-dimensional model helium atom and using an extended strong field approximation. It is shown that the harmonics well beyond the usual cut-off are due to the simultaneous recombination of the two electrons, which were emitted during different, previous half-cycles. The new cut-off is explained in terms of classical trajectories. Classical predictions and the time-frequency analysis of the ab initio quantum results are in excellent agreement. The mechanism corresponds to…
We present a novel approach to calculating strong field ionization dynamics of multielectron molecular targets. Adopting a multielectron wavefunction ansatz based on field-free ab initio neutral and ionic multielectron states, a set of coupled time-dependent single-particle Schroedinger equations describing the neutral amplitude and continuum electron are constructed. These equations, amenable to direct numerical solution or further analytical treatment, allow one to study multielectron effects during strong field ionization, recollision, and high harmonic generation. We apply the method to st…
A nonlocal quantum model is presented for calculating the atomic dielectric response to a strong laser electric field. By replacing the Coulomb potential with a nonlocal potential in the Schrodinger equation, a 3+1D calculation of the time-dependent electric dipole moment can be replaced with a 0+1D integral equation, offering significant computational savings. The model is benchmarked against an established ionization model and \textit{ab initio} simulation of the time-dependent Schrodinger equation. The reduced computational overhead makes the model a promising candidate to incorporate full …
We present the first experimental data on strong-field ionization of atomic hydrogen by few-cycle laser pulses. We obtain quantitative agreement at the 10% level between the data and an {\it ab initio} simulation over a wide range of laser intensities and electron energies.
Spin effects in above-threshold ionization of hydrogenlike highly charged ions in super-strong laser fields are investigated. Spin-resolved ionization rates in the tunneling regime are calculated by employing two versions of a relativistic Coulomb-corrected strong-field approximation (SFA). An intuitive simple-man model is developed which explains the derived scaling laws for spin-flip and spin-asymmetry effects. The intuitive model as well as our ab initio numerical simulations support the analytical results for the spin effects obtained in the dressed SFA where the impact of the laser field …
We analyze atomic photoelectron momentum distributions induced by bichromatic and monochromatic laser fields within the strong field approximation (SFA), separable Coulomb-Volkov approximation (SCVA), and ab initio treatment. We focus on the high frequency regime -- the smallest frequency used is larger than the ionization potential of the atom. We observe a remarkable agreement between the ab initio and velocity gauge SFA results while the velocity gauge SCVA fails to agree. Reasons of such a failure are discussed.
Molecular ions formed in cold hybrid ion-atom experiments may find interesting applications ranging from precision measurements to controlled chemical reactions. Here, we investigate electronic structure of the Sr$_2^+$ molecular ion, which may be produced by photoassociation of laser-cooled Sr$^+$ ions immersed into an ultracold gas of Sr atoms or by ionization of ultracold Sr$_2$ molecules. Using \textit{ab initio} electronic structure methods, such as the coupled cluster and configuration interaction ones with small-core relativistic energy-consistent pseudopotentials and large Gaussian bas…
The lifetime of nonreactive ultracold bialkali gases was conjectured to be limited by sticky collisions amplifying three-body loss. We show that the sticking times were previously overestimated and do not support this hypothesis. We find that electronic excitation of NaK+NaK collision complexes by the trapping laser leads to the experimentally observed two-body loss. We calculate the excitation rate with a quasiclassical, statistical model employing ab initio potentials and transition dipole moments. Using longer laser wavelengths or repulsive box potentials may suppress the losses.
Strong field processes in the non-relativistic regime are insensitive to the electron spin, i.e. the observables appear to be independent of this electron property. This does not have to be the case for several active electrons where Pauli principle may affect the their dynamics. We exemplify this statement studying model atoms with three active electrons interacting with strong pulsed radiation, using an ab-initio time-dependent Schrödinger equation on a grid. In our restricted dimensionality model we are able, for the first time, to analyse momenta correlations of the three outgoing electron…
