We present a novel approach to calculating strong field ionization dynamics of multielectron molecular targets. Adopting a multielectron wavefunction ansatz based on field-free ab initio neutral and ionic multielectron states, a set of coupled time-dependent single-particle Schroedinger equations describing the neutral amplitude and continuum electron are constructed. These equations, amenable to direct numerical solution or further analytical treatment, allow one to study multielectron effects during strong field ionization, recollision, and high harmonic generation. We apply the method to strong field ionization of CO_2, and suggest the importance of intermediate core excitation to explain previous failure of analytical models to reproduce experimental ionization yields for this molecule.
We solve the hydrodynamic-ballistic equations of motion for a one-dimensional time-dependent Thomas-Fermi model of Cl_2 exposed to an intense subpicosecond laser field, and observe simultaneous multielectron ionization and molecular dissociation. The fragment kinetic energy defect with respect to the simple Coulomb explosion picture is found to originate in ejected-electron screening of the escaping fragments; its magnitude agrees with that observed in recent experiments.
Multielectron double ionization with elliptically polarized light is examined theoretically using a classical ensemble method going beyond the single-active-electron approximation. A knee structure in the ion signal is found. Our analysis provides an explanation for newly observed SDI phenomena.
We present theoretical calculations of orientation-dependent total ionization yields from the highest occupied molecular orbitals of the oriented OCS molecule by solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in three dimensions. The calculations were performed within the single-active-electron approximation including multielectron polarization. The multielectron polarization term was represented by an induced dipole term which contains the polarizability of the OCS + cation parallel to the laser polarization. Upon accounting for multielectron polarization, the calculated total ionization yie…
We revisit strong-field ionization of aligned O$_2$, CO$_2$, and CS$_2$ molecules in light of recent advances in the field of strong-field physics, in particular the inclusion of multielectron polarization in the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation (TDSE) within the singe-active-electron approximation. Upon inclusion of multielectron polarization and the associated induced dipole potential in the TDSE model, we obtain angular distributions of total ionization yields which are in better agreement with the available experimental results for CO$_2$ and CS$_2$. For the …
We extend the semiclassical two-step model [Phys. Rev. A 94, 013415 (2016)] to include a multielectron polarization-induced dipole potential. Using this model we investigate the imprints of multielectron effects in the momentum distributions of photoelectrons ionized by a linearly polarized laser pulse. We predict narrowing of the longitudinal momentum distributions due to electron focusing by the induced dipole potential. We show that the polarization of the core also modifies interference structures in the photoelectron momentum distributions. Specifically, the number of fanlike interference…
We discuss the mechanism by which the inclusion of multielectron polarization improves the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) for the oriented CO molecule in a strong external laser pulse within the single-active-electron (SAE) approximation. A challenging problem of using the SAE approximation is that the active electron, instead of undergoing ionization, may be driven by the external field to lower-lying orbitals. For the oriented CO molecule, dipole coupling to the lower-lying bound states of the potential depends on the orientation angle, thereby affecting the orien…
We consider the final stage of multiple ionization of atoms in a strong linearly polarized laser field within a classical model. We propose that non-sequential multiple ionization is dominated by symmetric escape from a highly excited intermediate complex. For a configuration of N electrons with C_Nv symmetry in a plane perpendicular to the electric field we analyze the classical motion in phase space and discuss the final momentum distribution parallel and perpendicular to the polarization axis. The results are in good agreement with recent experiment of multiple ionization in Ne.
We report fully differential photoelectron spectra from an {\it ab-inito} coupled channels treatment of CO$_2$. Photoionization by laser pulses centered at 400 nm and 800 nm wavelength are considered, with arbitrary molecular alignment and polarization (linear and elliptic). Calculations reveal significant excited state channel contributions that are, at certain molecular orientations, an order of magnitude larger than the ground state channel in the rescattering plateau. Partial wash out of the multiphoton structure in the ATI spectra and of the nodal features in angle resolved spectra is obs…
Carrier envelope phase (CEP) stabilized 5 fs and 22 fs pulses of intense 800 nm light are used to probe the strong-field ionization dynamics of multielectron entities, xenon and carbon disulfide. We compare ion yields obtained with and without CEP-stabilization: with 8-cycle (22 fs) pulses, Xe$^{6+}$ yields are suppressed (relative to Xe$^+$ yields) by between 30% and 50%, depending on phase, reflecting the phase dependence of non-sequential ionization and its contribution to the formation of higher charge states. On the other hand, ion yields for Xe$^{q+}$ ($q$=2-4) with CEP-stablized pulses …
Visualizing intense laser field driven electron dynamics in a multielectron molecule: dynamic electron localization, bonding properties and multiple ionization bursts
Multiple electron processes occur widely in atoms, molecules, clusters, and condensed matters when they are interacting with energetic particles or intense laser fields. In this work, a unified and accurate theoretical formalism is proposed on the direct multielectron processes of atoms including the multiple Auger decay and multiple ionization by an impact of an energetic electron or a photon based on the atomic collision theory described by a correlated many-body Green's function. Such a practical treatment is made possible due to different coherence features of the particles (matter waves) …
The time-dependent complete-active-space self-consistent-field (TD-CASSCF) method for the description of multielectron dynamics in intense laser fields is presented, and a comprehensive description of the method is given. It introduces the concept of frozen-core (to model tightly bound electrons with no response to the field), dynamical-core (to model electrons tightly bound but responding to the field), and active (fully correlated to describe ionizing electrons) orbital subspaces, allowing compact yet accurate representation of ionization dynamics in many-electron systems. The classification…
We review time-dependent multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (TD-MCSCF) method and time-dependent optimized coupled-cluster (TD-OCC) method for first-principles simulations of high-field phenomena such as tunneling ionization and high-order harmonic generation in atoms and molecules irradiated by a strong laser field. These methods provide a flexible and systematically improvable description of the multielectron dynamics by expressing the all-electron wavefunction by configuration interaction expansion or coupled-cluster expansion, using time-dependent one-electron orbital functions. The …
High harmonic spectroscopy has the potential to combine attosecond temporal with sub-Angstrom spatial resolution of the early nuclear and multielectron dynamics in molecules. It involves strong field ionization of the molecule by the IR laser field followed by time-delayed recombination of the removed electron with the molecular ion. The time-delay is controlled on the attosecond time scale by the oscillation of the IR field and is mapped into the harmonic number, providing a movie of molecular dynamics between ionization and recombination. One of the challenges in the analysis of high harmoni…
In this chapter we analyze the multiple ionization by impact of |Z|=1 projectiles: electrons, positrons, protons and antiprotons. Differences and similarities among the cross sections by these four projectiles allows us to have an insight on the physics involved. Mass and charge effects, energy thresholds, and relative importance of collisional and post-collisional processes are discussed. For this purpose, we performed a detailed theoretical-experimental comparison for single up to quintuple ionization of Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe by particles and antiparticles. We include an extensive compilation of…
Photoelectron angular distributions of the two-photon ionization of neutral atoms are theoretically investigated. Numerical calculations of two-photon ionization cross sections and asymmetry parameters are carried out within the independent-particle approximation and relativistic second-order perturbation theory. The dependence of the asymmetry parameters on the polarization and energy of the incident light as well as on the angular momentum properties of the ionized electron are investigated. While dynamic variations of the angular distributions at photon energies near intermediate level reso…
We theoretically study the pulse-width dependence of the photoelectron angular distribution (PAD) from the resonance-enhanced two-photon single ionization of He by femtosecond ($\lesssim 20$ fs) extreme-ultraviolet pulses, based on the time-dependent perturbation theory and simulations with the full time-dependent Schrödinger equation. In particular, we focus on the competition between resonant and nonresonant ionization paths, which leads to the relative phase $δ$ between the $S$ and $D$ wave packets distinct from the corresponding scattering phase shift difference. When the spectrally broade…
We report the implementation of a cost-effective approximation method within the framework of time-dependent optimized coupled-cluster (TD-OCC) method [J. Chem. Phys. 148, 051101 (2018)] for real-time simulations of intense laser-driven multielectron dynamics. The method, designated as TD-OCEPA0, is a time-dependent extension of the simplest version of the coupled-electron pair approximation with optimized orbitals [J. Chem. Phys. 139, 054104 (2013)]. It is size extensive, gauge invariant, and computationally much more efficient than the TD-OCC with double excitations (TD-OCCD). We employed th…
We report the formulation of a new, cost-effective approximation method in the time-dependent optimized coupled-cluster (TD-OCC) framework [T. Sato et al., J. Chem. Phys. 148, 051101 (2018)] for first-principles simulations of multielectron dynamics in an intense laser field. The method, designated as TD-OCCD(T), is a time-dependent, orbital-optimized extension of the "gold-standard" CCSD(T) method in the ground-state electronic structure theory. The equations of motion for the orbital functions and the coupled-cluster amplitudes are derived based on the real-valued time-dependent variational …
The time-dependent multiconfiguration self-consistent-field method based on the occupation-restricted multiple active space model is proposed (TD-ORMAS) for multielectron dynamics in intense laser fields. Extending the previously proposed time-dependent complete-active-space self-consistent-field method [TD-CASSCF; Phys. Rev. A, {\bf 88}, 023402 (2013)], which divides the occupied orbitals into core and active orbitals, the TD-ORMAS method {\it further} subdivides the active orbitals into an arbitrary number of subgroups, and poses the {\it occupation restriction} by giving the minimum and max…
We review the semiclassical two-step model for strong-field ionization. The semiclassical two-step model describes quantum interference and accounts for the ionic potential beyond the semiclassical perturbation theory. We discuss formulation and implementation of this model, its further developments, as well as some of the applications. The reviewed applications of the model include strong-field holography with photoelectrons, multielectron polarization effects in ionization by an intense laser pulse, and strong-field ionization of the hydrogen molecule.
We propose a new scenario to apply IR-pump-XUV-probe schemes to resolving strong field ionization induced and attosecond pulse driven electron-hole dynamics and coherence in real time. The coherent driving of both the infrared laser and the attoscond pulse correlates the dynamics of the core-hole and the valence-hole which leads to the otherwise forbidden absorption and emission of XUV photon. An analytical model is developed based on the strong-field approximation by taking into account of the essential multielectron configurations. The emission spectra from the core-valence transition and th…
We numerically study models of $\mathrm{H}_2$ and $\mathrm{LiH}$ molecules, aligned collinearly with the linear polarization of the external field, to elucidate the possible role of correlation in the enhanced-ionization phenomena. Correlation is considered at different levels of approximation with the time-dependent generalized-active-space configuration-interaction method. The results of our studies show that enhanced ionization occurs in multielectron molecules, that correlation is important and they also demonstrate significant deviations between the results of the single-active-electron a…
The structure of approximate two electron wavefunction is deeply investigated, both theoretically and numerically, in the strong-field driven ionization dynamics. Theoretical analyses clarify that for two electron singlet systems, the previously proposed time-dependent extended Hartree-Fock (TD-EHF) method [Phys. Rev. A 51, 3999 (1995)] is equivalent to the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree-Fock method with two occupied orbitals. The latter wavefunction is further transformed into the natural expansion form, enabling the direct propagation of the natural orbitals (NOs). These methods, …
Molecules show a much increased multiple ionization rate in a strong laser field as compared to atoms of similar ionization energy. A widely accepted model attributes this to the action of the joint fields of the adjacent ionic core and the laser on its neighbor inside the same molecule. The underlying physical picture for the enhanced ionization is that the up-field atom that gets ionized. However, this is still debated and remains unproven. Here we report an experimental verification of this long-standing prediction. This is accomplished by probing the two-site double ionization of ArXe, whe…
An improved quantum trajectory Monte Carlo method involving the Stark shift of the initial state, Coulomb potential, and multielectron polarization-induced dipole potential is used to revisit the origin of the low-energy interference structure in the photoelectron momentum distribution of the xenon atom subjected to an intense laser field, and resolve the different contributions of these three effects. In addition to the well-studied radial finger-like interference structure, a ring-like interference structure induced by interference among electron wave packets emitted from multi-cycle time wi…
We study static-field ionization of He-like ions with nuclear charge number in the range of $2\le Z \le 36$. Both the tunneling and over-the-barrier regimes are considered. We calculate the ionization rates by three approximate methods: a fitting formula based on the Perelemov-Popov-Terent'ev (PPT) formula, a perturbative expansion in powers of $1/Z$, and a single-active electron approximation, and compare them with reference ionization rates computed by the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree-Fock (MCTDHF) approach. The relative deviation of the rates computed by the PPT-based fitting f…
The double-slit interference in single-photon ionization of the diatomic molecular ion $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ is theoretically studied beyond the dipole approximation. Via simulating and comparing the interactions of the prealigned $\mathrm{H}_2^+$ and the hydrogen atom with the xuv pulses propagating in different directions, we illustrate two kinds of effects that are encoded in the interference patterns of the photoelectrons from $\mathrm{H}_2^+$: (i) the photon-momentum transfer and (ii) the finite speed of light. While both effects could modify the maxima of the interference fringes, we show tha…
A general model and toolkit for the ionization of three or more electrons in strongly driven molecules using an effective Coulomb potential for the interaction between bound electrons
RMT is a program which solves the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for general, multielectron atoms, ions and molecules interacting with laser light. As such it can be used to model ionization (single-photon, multi-photon and strong-field), recollision (high-harmonic generation, strong-field rescattering), and more generally absorption or scattering processes with a full account of the multielectron correlation effects in a time-dependent manner. Calculations can be performed for targets interacting with ultrashort, intense laser pulses of long-wavelength and arbitrary polarization. Calcula…
We give examples showing that two well-known versions of the S-matrix theory, which describes a nonresonant multiphoton ionization of atoms and ions in intense laser fields, lead to qualitatively different results. The latter refer not only to total ionization rates, but also to energy distributions of photoelectrons, for instance in a polarization plane of the laser field. It should be possible to make an experiment testing predictions of both theories in the near future.
We study the breakup of $\text{H}_2^+$ exposed to super-intense, femtosecond laser pulses with frequencies greater than that corresponding to the ionization potential. By solving the time-dependent Schrödinger equation in an extensive field parameter range, it is revealed that highly nonresonant dissociation channels can dominate over ionization. By considering field-dressed Born-Oppenheimer potential energy curves in the reference frame following a free electron in the field, we propose a simple physical model that characterizes this dissociation mechanism. The model is used to predict contro…
We describe an ab initio and non-perturbative $R$-matrix with time-dependence theory for ultrafast atomic processes in light fields of arbitrary polarization. The theory is applicable to complex, multielectron atoms and atomic ions subject to ultrashort (particularly few-femtosecond and attosecond) laser pulses with any given ellipticity, and generalizes previous time-dependent $R$-matrix techniques restricted to linearly polarized fields. We discuss both the fundamental equations, required to propagate the multielectron wavefunction in time, as well as the computational developments necessary…
Resolving in time the dynamics of light absorption by atoms and molecules, and the electronic rearrangement this induces, is among the most challenging goals of attosecond spectroscopy. The attoclock is an elegant approach to this problem, which encodes ionization times in the strong-field regime. However, the accurate reconstruction of these times from experimental data presents a formidable theoretical challenge. Here, we solve this problem by combining analytical theory with ab-initio numerical simulations. We apply our theory to numerical attoclock experiments on the hydrogen atom to extra…
We employ a recently developed three-dimensional semiclassical model to identify nondipole effects in triple ionization of Ne driven by infrared laser pulses at intensities where electron-electron correlation prevails. This model fully accounts for the Coulomb interaction of each electron with the core and avoids artificial autoionization by employing effective Coulomb potentials to describe the interaction between bound electrons (ECBB). Using the ECBB model, we identify a prominent signature of nondipole effects. Namely, the component along the direction of light propagation of the average s…
Double ionization (DI) is a fundamental process that despite its apparent simplicity provides rich opportunities for probing and controlling the electronic motion. Even for the simplest multielectron atom, helium, new DI mechanisms are still being found. To first order in the field strength, a strong external field doubly ionizes the electrons in helium such that they are ejected into the same direction (front-to-back motion). The ejection into opposite directions (back-to-back motion) cannot be described to first order, making it a challenging target for control. Here, we address this challen…
Bichromatic extreme-ultraviolet pulses from a seeded free-electron laser enable us to measure photoelectron angular distribution (PAD) as a function of the relative phase between the different wavelength components. The time-dependent multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (TD-MCSCF) methods are powerful multielectron computation methods to accurately simulate such photoionization dynamics from the first principles. Here we propose a method to evaluate the amplitude and phase of each ionization path, which completely determines the photoionization processes, using TD-MCSCF simulation results…
We present the time-dependent complete-active-space self-consistent-field (TD-CASSCF) method to simulate multielectron dynamics in ultrafast intense laser fields from the first principles. While based on multiconfiguration expansion, it divides the orbital space into frozen-core (tightly bound electrons with no response to the field), dynamical-core (electrons tightly bound but responding to the field), and active (fully correlated to describe highly excited and ejected electrons) orbital subspaces. The subspace decomposition can be done flexibly, conforming to phenomena under investigation an…
We present a numerical implementation of the time-dependent surface flux (tSURFF) method [New J. Phys. 14, 013021 (2012)], an efficient computational scheme to extract photoelectron energy spectra, to the time-dependent multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (TD-MCSCF) method. Extending the original tSURFF method developed for single particle systems, we formulate the equations of motion for the spectral amplitude of orbital functions constutiting the TD-MCSCF wave function, from which the angle-resolved photoelectron energy spectrum, and more generally, photoelectron reduced density matrice…
This paper has been prepared by the Symphony collaboration (University of Warsaw, Uniwersytet Jagielloński, DESY/CNR and ICFO) on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the "simple man's models" which underlie most of the phenomena that occur when intense ultrashort laser pulses interact with matter. The phenomena in question include High-Harmonic Generation, Above-Threshold Ionization, and Non-Sequential Multielectron Ionization. "Simple man's models" provide, both an intuitive basis for understanding the numerical solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, and the motivation for …
