We report the implementation of a cost-effective approximation method within the framework of time-dependent optimized coupled-cluster (TD-OCC) method [J. Chem. Phys. 148, 051101 (2018)] for real-time simulations of intense laser-driven multielectron dynamics. The method, designated as TD-OCEPA0, is a time-dependent extension of the simplest version of the coupled-electron pair approximation with optimized orbitals [J. Chem. Phys. 139, 054104 (2013)]. It is size extensive, gauge invariant, and computationally much more efficient than the TD-OCC with double excitations (TD-OCCD). We employed this method to simulate the electron dynamics in Ne and Ar atoms exposed to intense near infrared laser pulses with various intensities. The computed results, including high-harmonic generation spectra and ionization yields, are compared with those of various other methods ranging from uncorrelated time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) to fully-correlated (within the active orbital space) time-dependent complete-active-space self-consistent-field (TD-CASSCF). The TD-OCEPA0 results show a good agreement with TD-CASSCF ones for moderate laser intensities. For higher intensities, however, TD-OCEPA0 tends to overestimate the correlation effect, as occasionally observed for CEPA0 in the ground-state correlation energy calculations.
We report successful implementation of the time-dependent second-order many-body perturbation theory using optimized orthonormal orbital functions called time-dependent optimized second-order many-body perturbation theory [TD-OMP2] to reach out to relatively larger chemical systems for the study of intense-laser-driven multielectron dynamics. We apply this method to strong-field ionization and high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of Ar. The calculation results are benchmarked against ab initio time-dependent complete-active-space self-consistent field (TD-CASSCF), time-dependent optimized coup…
We present a cost-effective treatment of the triple excitation amplitudes in the time-dependent optimized coupled-cluster (TD-OCC) framework called TD-OCCDT(4) for studying intense laser-driven multielectron dynamics. It considers triple excitation amplitudes correct up to fourth-order in many-body perturbation theory and achieves a computational scaling of O(N7), with N being the number of active orbital functions. This method is applied to the electron dynamics in Ne and Ar atoms exposed to an intense near-infrared laser pulse with various intensities. We benchmark our results against the ti…
We report the formulation of a new, cost-effective approximation method in the time-dependent optimized coupled-cluster (TD-OCC) framework [T. Sato et al., J. Chem. Phys. 148, 051101 (2018)] for first-principles simulations of multielectron dynamics in an intense laser field. The method, designated as TD-OCCD(T), is a time-dependent, orbital-optimized extension of the "gold-standard" CCSD(T) method in the ground-state electronic structure theory. The equations of motion for the orbital functions and the coupled-cluster amplitudes are derived based on the real-valued time-dependent variational …
Time-dependent coupled-cluster method with time-varying orbital functions, called time-dependent optimized coupled- cluster (TD-OCC) method, is formulated for multielectron dynamics in an intense laser field. We have successfully derived equations of motion for CC amplitudes and orthonormal orbital functions based on the real action functional, and implemented the method including double excitations (TD-OCCD) and double and triple excitations (TD-OCCDT) within the optimized active orbitals. The present method is size extensive and gauge invariant, a polynomial cost-scaling alternative to the t…
We review time-dependent multiconfiguration self-consistent-field (TD-MCSCF) method and time-dependent optimized coupled-cluster (TD-OCC) method for first-principles simulations of high-field phenomena such as tunneling ionization and high-order harmonic generation in atoms and molecules irradiated by a strong laser field. These methods provide a flexible and systematically improvable description of the multielectron dynamics by expressing the all-electron wavefunction by configuration interaction expansion or coupled-cluster expansion, using time-dependent one-electron orbital functions. The …
We present a novel approach to calculating strong field ionization dynamics of multielectron molecular targets. Adopting a multielectron wavefunction ansatz based on field-free ab initio neutral and ionic multielectron states, a set of coupled time-dependent single-particle Schroedinger equations describing the neutral amplitude and continuum electron are constructed. These equations, amenable to direct numerical solution or further analytical treatment, allow one to study multielectron effects during strong field ionization, recollision, and high harmonic generation. We apply the method to st…
We calculate the high-harmonic generation (HHG) spectra, strong-field ionization, and time-dependent dipole-moment of Ne using explicitly time-dependent optimized second-order many-body perturbation method (TD-OMP2) where both orbitals and amplitudes are time-dependent. We consider near-infrared (800 nm) and mid-infrared (1200 nm) laser pulses with very high intensities ($5\times10^{14}$, $8\times10^{14}$ , and $1\times10^{15}$ W/cm$^2$), required for strong-field experiments with the high-ionization potential (21.6 eV) atom. We compare the result of the TD-OMP2 method with the time-dependent …
Contrary to standard coupled cluster doubles (CCD) and Brueckner doubles (BD), singlet-paired analogues of CCD and BD (denoted here as CCD0 and BD0) do not break down when static correlation is present, but neglect substantial amounts of dynamic correlation. In fact, CCD0 and BD0 do not account for any contributions from multielectron excitations involving only same-spin electrons at all. We exploit this feature to add---without introducing double counting, self-interaction, or increase in cost---the missing correlation to these methods via meta-GGA density functionals (TPSS and SCAN). Further…
Coupled cluster (CC) methods are among the most accurate methods in quantum chemistry. However, the standard CC linear response formulation is not gauge invariant resulting in errors when modelling properties like optical rotation and electron circular dichroism. Including an explicit unitary orbital rotation in the CC Lagrangian makes the linear response function gauge invariant, but the resulting models are not equivalent to full configuration interaction (FCI) in the untruncated limit. In this contribution, such methods are briefly discussed and it is demonstrated that methods using a nonor…
We present the coupled-cluster singles and doubles method formulated in terms of truncated pair-natural orbitals (PNO) that are optimized to minimize the effect of truncation. Compared to the standard ground-state PNO coupled-cluster approaches, in which truncated PNOs derived from first-order Møller-Plesset (MP1) amplitudes are used to compress the CC wave operator, the iteratively-optimized PNOs ("iPNOs") offer moderate improvement for small PNO ranks but rapidly increase their effectiveness for large PNO ranks. The error introduced by PNO truncation in the CCSD energy is reduced by orders o…
The previously proposed ansatz for density cumulant theory that combines orbital-optimization and a parameterization of the 2-electron reduced density matrix cumulant in terms of unitary coupled cluster amplitudes (OUDCT) is carefully examined. Formally, we elucidate the relationship between OUDCT and orbital-optimized unitary coupled cluster theory and show the existence of near-zero denominators in the stationarity conditions for both the exact and some approximate OUDCT methods. We implement methods of the OUDCT ansatz restricted to double excitations for numerical study, up to the fifth co…
The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithm, designed to calculate the energy of molecular ground states on near-term quantum computers, requires specification of symmetries that describe the system, e.g. spin state and number of electrons. This opens the possibility of using VQE to obtain excited states as the lowest energy solutions of a given set of symmetries. In this paper, the performances of various unitary coupled cluster (UCC) ansätze applied to VQE calculations on excited states are investigated, using quantum circuits designed to represent single reference and multireference…
The Coupled Cluster (CC) method is used to compute the electronic correlation energy in atoms and molecules and often leads to highly accurate results. However, due to its single-reference nature, standard CC in its projected form fails to describe quantum states characterized by strong electronic correlations and multi-reference projective methods become necessary. On the other hand, quantum algorithms for the solution of many-electron problems have also emerged recently. The quantum UCC with singles and doubles (q-UCCSD) is a popular wavefunction Ansatz for the Variational Quantum Eigensolve…
Trapped ion quantum hardware demonstration of energy calculations using a multireference unitary coupled cluster ansatz: application to the BeH2 insertion problem
Parity-violating energies $E_{PV}$ of the $H_2X_2$ X = O, S, Se, Te, Po) molecules are reported, calculated as analytical expectation values at the relativistic coupled-cluster singles-and-doubles (CCSD) level using property-optimized basis sets. Radiative corrections to the $E_{PV}$ was investigated using effective QED-potentials and found to reach a maximal value of 2.38% for $H_2Po_2$ . However, this result depends on the choice of effective self-energy potential and may indicate limitations to their domain of validity.
Methods which aim at universal applicability must be able to describe both weak and strong electronic correlation with equal facility. Such methods are in short supply. The combination of symmetry projection for strong correlation and coupled cluster theory for weak correlation offers tantalizing promise to account for both on an equal footing. In order to do so, however, the coupled cluster portion of the wave function must be optimized in the presence of the symmetry projection. This paper discusses how this may be accomplished, and shows the importance of doing so for both the Hubbard model…
The pair coupled cluster doubles (pCCD) method (where the excitation manifold is restricted to electron pairs) has a series of interesting features. Among others, it provides ground-state energies very close to what is obtained with doubly-occupied configuration interaction (DOCI), but with polynomial cost (compared with the exponential cost of the latter). Here, we address whether this similarity holds for excited states, by exploring the symmetric dissociation of the linear \ce{H4} molecule. When ground-state Hartree-Fock (HF) orbitals are employed, pCCD and DOCI excited-state energies do no…
Valence excitation spectra are computed for all deep-center silicon-vacancy defect types in 3C, 4H, and 6H silicon carbide (SiC) and comparisons are made with literature photoluminescence measurements. Nuclear geometries surrounding the defect centers are optimized within a Gaussian basis-set framework using many-body perturbation theory or density functional theory (DFT) methods, with computational expenses minimized by a QM/MM technique called SIMOMM. Vertical excitation energies are subsequently obtained by applying excitation-energy, electron-attached, and ionized equation-of-motion couple…
Doubly occupied configuration interaction (DOCI) with optimized orbitals often accurately describes strong correlations while working in a Hilbert space much smaller than that needed for full configuration interaction. However, the scaling of such calculations remains combinatorial with system size. Pair coupled cluster doubles (pCCD) is very successful in reproducing DOCI energetically, but can do so with low polynomial scaling ($N^3$, disregarding the two-electron integral transformation from atomic to molecular orbitals). We show here several examples illustrating the success of pCCD in rep…
We use coupled-cluster quantum chemical methods to calculate the energetics of molecular clusters cut out of periodic molecular hydrogen structures that model observed phases of solid hydrogen. The hydrogen structures are obtained from Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) calculations at pressures of 150, 250 and 350 GPa, which are within the pressure range in which phases II, III and IV are found to be stable. The calculated deviations in the DFT energies from the coupled-cluster data are reported for different functionals, and optimized functionals are generated which provide reduced er…
Metallic solids are a challenging target for wavefunction-based electronic structure theories and have not been studied in great detail by such methods. Here, we use coupled-cluster theory with single and double excitations (CCSD) to study the structure of solid lithium and aluminum using optimized Gaussian basis sets. We calculate the equilibrium lattice constant, bulk modulus, and cohesive energy and compare them to experimental values, finding accuracy comparable to common density functionals. Because the quantum chemical "gold standard" CCSD(T) (CCSD with perturbative triple excitations) i…
We investigate the use of orbital-optimized references in conjunction with single-reference coupled-cluster theory with single and double substitutions (CCSD) for the study of core excitations and ionizations of 18 small organic molecules, without any use of response theory or equation-of-motion formalisms. Three schemes are employed to successfully address the convergence difficulties associated with the coupled-cluster equations, and the spin contamination resulting from the use of a spin symmetry-broken reference, in the case of excitations. In order to gauge the inherent potential of the m…
We extend the finite-temperature Keldysh non-equilibrium coupled cluster theory (Keldysh-CC) [{\it J. Chem. Theory Comput.} \textbf{2019}, 15, 6137-6253] to include a time-dependent orbital basis. When chosen to minimize the action, such a basis restores local and global conservation laws (Ehrenfest's theorem) for all one-particle properties, while remaining energy conserving for time-independent Hamiltonians. We present the time-dependent orbital-optimized coupled cluster doubles method (Keldysh-OCCD) in analogy with the formalism for zero-temperature dynamics, extended to finite temperatures…
We introduce perturbation and coupled-cluster theories based on a cluster mean-field reference for describing the ground state of strongly-correlated spin systems. In cluster mean-field, the ground state wavefunction is written as a simple tensor product of optimized cluster states. The cluster language and the mean-field nature of the ansatz allows for a straightforward improvement which uses perturbation theory and coupled-cluster to account for inter-cluster correlations. We present benchmark calculations on the 1D chain and 2D square $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg model, using cluster mean-field, pe…
We explore an alternative to twist averaging in order to obtain more cost-effective and accurate extrapolations to the thermodynamic limit (TDL) for coupled cluster doubles (CCD) calculations. We seek a single twist angle to perform calculations at, instead of integrating over many random points or a grid. We introduce the concept of connectivity, a quantity derived from the non-zero four-index integrals in an MP2 calculation. This allows us to find a special twist angle that provides appropriate connectivity in the energy equation, and which yields results comparable to full twist averaging. …
Tailored coupled cluster theory represents a computationally inexpensive way to describe static and dynamical electron correlation effects. In this work, we scrutinize the performance of various tailored coupled cluster methods externally corrected by electronic wave functions of polynomial cost. Specifically, we focus on frozen-pair coupled-cluster (fpCC) methods, which are externally corrected by pair-coupled cluster doubles (pCCD), and coupled cluster theory tailored by matrix product state wave functions optimized by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. As test system…
