When a laser pulse impinges on a molecule which is invariant under certain symmetry operations selection rules for harmonic generation (HG) arise. In other words: symmetry controls which channels are open for the deposition and emission of laser energy---with the possible application of filtering or amplification. We review the derivation of HG selection rules and study numerically the interaction of laser pulses with an effectively one-dimensional ring-shaped model molecule. The harmonic yields obtained from that model and their dependence on laser frequency and intensity are discussed. In a real experiment obvious candidates for such molecules are benzene, other aromatic compounds, or even nanotubes.
We study numerically the interaction between an intense circularly polarized laser field and an electron moving in a potential which has a discrete cylindrical symmetry with respect to the laser pulse propagation direction. This setup serves as a simple model, e.g., for benzene and other aromatic compounds. From general symmetry considerations, within a Floquet approach, selection rules for the harmonic generation [O. Alon Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 3743 (1998)] have been derived recently. Instead, the results we present in this paper have been obtained solving the time-dependent Schroedinger equatio…
We demonstrate the capability of ab-initio time-dependent R-matrix theory to obtain accurate harmonic generation spectra of noble-gas atoms at Near-IR wavelengths between 1200 and 1800 nm and peak intensities up to 1.8 X 10(14) W/cm(2) . To accommodate the excursion length of the ejected electron, we use an angular-momentum expansion up to Lmax = 279. The harmonic spectra show evidence of atomic structure through the presence of a Cooper minimum in harmonic generation for Kr, and of multielectron interaction through the giant resonance for Xe. The theoretical spectra agree well with those obta…
We theoretically investigate correlated electron dynamics in high-harmonic generation (HHG), using all-electron \emph{ab initio} simulations for three-dimensional real alkali-metal atoms. The resulting harmonic spectra exhibit a plateau extended beyond the usual cutoff and a prominent resonance peak above the plateau. These remarkable features arise from the cation response dramatically enhanced by laser-induced electron recollision, which is a key process of attosecond science. This demonstrates that high-harmonic spectroscopy provides new possibilities to explore dynamical electron correlati…
The generation of harmonics by atoms interacting with two circularly polarized and frequency related laser fields is addressed through ab initio numerical simulations. A detailed charaterization of a few specific harmonics is given. In particular, the two different cases where the total energy absorbed through photons is far-off or close to the energy gap between different atomic states are investigated. It is found that the conversion efficiency in the harmonic generation is strongly dependent on the inner atomic structure and in certain specific cases it can be significantly enhanced within …
High harmonic generation (HHG) is a manifestation of the strongly nonlinear response of matter to intense laser fields and has, as the basis for coherent XUV sources a variety of applications. Recently, HHG from atoms in a phase and polarization structured laser was demonstrated and interpreted based on the transverse electric field component of the driving pulse. Here we point out that as dictated by Maxwell equations, such fields have a longitudinal component which in general has a fundamental influence on the charge dynamics. For instance, its interplay with the transversal field component …
We present a novel ab-initio single-electron approach to correlated electron dynamics in strong laser fields. By writing the electronic wavefunction as a product of a marginal one-electron wavefunction and a conditional wavefunction, we show that the exact harmonic spectrum can be obtained from a single-electron Schrödinger equation. To obtain the one-electron potential in practice, we propose an adiabatic approximation, i.e. a potential is generated that depends only on the position of one electron. This potential, together with the laser interaction, is then used to obtain the dynamics of th…
We investigate the harmonic response of neon atoms to mid-IR laser fields (2000-3000nm) using a single-active electron (SAE) model and the fully ab initio all-electron R-Matrix with Time-dependence (RMT) method. The laser peak intensity and wavelength are varied to find suitable parameters for high-harmonic imaging in the water window. Comparison of the SAE and RMT results shows qualitative agreement between them as well as parameters such as the cutoff frequency predicted by the classical three-step model. However, there are significant differences in the details, particularly in the predicte…
We introduce high-harmonic sideband spectroscopy (HHSS) and show that it can be a robust probe of attosecond charge migration (CM) in a halogenated carbon-chain molecule. We simulate both the CM and harmonic-generation (HHG) dynamics using ab initio time-dependent density-functional theory. We find that CM dynamics initiated along the molecular backbone induces sidebands in the HHG spectrum driven by a delayed laser pulse that is polarized perpendicular to the molecular axis. Monitoring the spectrum as either the HHG laser frequency or the relative delay is scanned allows for the extraction of…
The generation of harmonics by atoms or ions in a two-color, coplanar field configuration with commensurate frequencies is investigated through both, an analytical calculation based on the Lewenstein model and the numerical ab initio solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation of a two-dimensional model ion. Through the analytical model, selection rules for the harmonic orders in this field configuration, a generalized cut-off for the harmonic spectra, and an integral expression for the harmonic dipole strength is provided. The numerical results are employed to test the predictions of…
We study the signature of two-center interferences in molecular high-order harmonic spectra, with an emphasis on the spectral phase. With the help of both ab initio computations based on the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and the molecular Strong-Field Approximation (SFA) as developed by Chirila et al. [Physical Review A, 73, 023410 (2006)] and Faria [Physical Review A, 76, 043407 (2007)], we observe that the phase behavior is radically different for the short and the long trajectory contributions. By means of Taylor expansions of the molecular SFA, we link this effect to the dynamics of …
We report theoretical calculations of high harmonic generation (HHG) by intense infrared lasers in atomic and molecular targets taking into account the macroscopic propagation of both fundamental and harmonic fields. On the examples of Ar and N$_2$, we demonstrate that these {\it ab initio} calculations are capable of accurately reproducing available experimental results with isotropic and aligned target media. We further present detailed analysis of HHG intensity and phase, under various experimental conditions, in particular, as the wavelength of the driving laser changes. Most importantly, …
In this Letter, it is experimentally and theoretically shown that weak odd harmonics generated during the propagation of an infrared ultrashort ultra-intense pulse unexpectedly modify the nonlinear properties of the medium and lead to a strong modification of the propagation dynamics. This result is in contrast with all current state-of-the-art propagation model predictions, in which secondary radiations, such as third harmonic, are expected to have a negligible action upon the fundamental pulse propagation. By analysing full three-dimensional ab initio quantum calculations describing the micr…
We use shaped near-infrared (NIR) pulses to control the generation of coherent broadband ultraviolet (UV) radiation in an atomic resonance-mediated (2+1) three-photon excitation. Experimental and theoretical results are presented for phase controlling the total emitted UV yield in atomic sodium (Na). Based on our confirmed understanding, we present a new simple scheme for producing shaped femtosecond pulses in the UV/VUV spectral range using the control over atomic resonance-mediated generation of third (or higher order) harmonic.
We numerically solved the full-dimensional electronic time-dependent Schrödinger equation for H$_2^+$ with Born-Oppenheimer approximation under different sin$^2$-shaped and trapezoidal laser pulses at some different wavelengths, with $I=$1 $\times 10^{13}$ Wcm$^{-2}$, 3 $\times 10^{13}$ Wcm$^{-2}$, and 6 $\times 10^{13}$ Wcm$^{-2}$ intensity at 4.73 a.u. and 7.0 a.u. internuclear distances. Some structures such as complexity, minima, and oscillatory patterns appeared in the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) spectra are investigated in this work by considering the electron localization, elec…
The perceived dichotomy between analytical and ab initio approaches to theory in attosecond science is often seen as a source of tension and misconceptions. This Topical Review compiles the discussions held during a round-table panel at the 'Quantum Battles in Attoscience' CECAM virtual workshop, to explore the sources of tension and attempt to dispel them. We survey the main theoretical tools of attoscience -- covering both analytical and numerical methods -- and we examine common misconceptions, including the relationship between ab initio approaches and the broader numerical methods, as wel…
We investigate dynamics of atomic and molecular systems exposed to intense, shaped chaotic fields and a weak femtosecond laser pulse theoretically. As a prototype example, the photoionization of a hydrogen atom is considered in detail. The net photoionization undergoes an optimal enhancement when a broadband chaotic field is added to the weak laser pulse. The enhanced ionization is analyzed using time-resolved wavepacket evolution and the population dynamics of the atomic levels. We elucidate the enhancement produced by spectrally-shaped chaotic fields of two different classes, one with a tuna…
