Our main contribution in this article is the achievement of the turnpike property in its integral and exponential forms for parameter-dependent systems with averaged observations in the cost functional. Namely, under suitable assumptions with respect to the matrices that defined the dynamics and the cost functional, we prove that the optimal control and state for the evolutionary problem converge in average to the optimal pair of an associated stationary problem. Moreover, we characterize the closeness between these two optimal solutions, proving that over a large time interval, they are exponentially close.
An exponential turnpike property for a semilinear control problem is proved. The state-target is assumed to be small, whereas the initial datum can be arbitrary. Turnpike results are also obtained for large targets, requiring that the control acts everywhere. In this case, we prove the convergence of the infimum of the averaged time-evolution functional towards the steady one. Numerical simulations are performed.
This paper is devoted to the study of the turnpike phenomenon arising in the optimal distributed control tracking-type problem for the Navier-Stokes equations. We obtain a positive answer to this property in the case when the controls are time-dependent functions, and also when are independent of time. In both cases we prove an exponential turnpike property assuming that the stationary optimal state satisfy certain properties of smallness.
In this paper, problems of optimal control are considered where in the objective function, in addition to the control cost there is a tracking term that measures the distance to a desired stationary state. The tracking term is given by some norm and therefore it is in general not differentiable. In the optimal control problem, the initial state is prescribed. We assume that the system is either exactly controllable in the classical sense or nodal profile controllable. We show that both for systems that are governed by ordinary differential equations and for infinite-dimensional systems, for ex…
This paper is devoted to analysing the explicit slow decay rate and turnpike in the infinite-horizon linear quadratic optimal control problems for hyperbolic systems. Assume that some weak observability or controllability are satisfied, by which, the lower and upper bounds of the corresponding algebraic Riccati operator are estimated, respectively. Then based on these two bounds, the explicit slow decay rate of the closed-loop system with Riccati-based optimal feedback control is obtained. The averaged turnpike property for this problem is also further discussed. We then apply these results to…
This paper presents a simulation study on turnpike phenomena in stochastic optimal control problems. We employ the framework of Polynomial Chaos Expansions (PCE) to investigate the presence of turnpikes in stochastic LQ problems. Our findings indicate that turnpikes can be observed in the evolution of PCE coefficients as well as in the evolution of statistical moments. Moreover, the turnpike phenomenon can be observed for optimal realization trajectories and with respect to the optimal stationary distribution. Finally, while adding variance penalization to the objective alters the turnpike, it…
The turnpike phenomenon stipulates that the solution of an optimal control problem in large time, remains essentially close to a steady-state of the dynamics, itself being the optimal solution of an associated static optimal control problem. Under general assumptions, it is known that not only the optimal state and the optimal control, but also the adjoint state coming from the application of the Pontryagin maximum principle, are exponentially close to a steady-state, except at the beginning and at the end of the time frame. In such results, the turnpike set is a singleton, which is a steady-s…
The turnpike property refers to the phenomenon that in many optimal control problems, the solutions for different initial conditions and varying horizons approach a neighborhood of a specific steady state, then stay in this neighborhood for the major part of the time horizon, until they may finally depart. While early observations of the phenomenon can be traced back to works of Ramsey and von Neumann on problems in economics in 1928 and 1938, the turnpike property received continuous interest in economics since the 1960s and recent interest in systems and control. The present chapter provides…
We introduce and study the turnpike property for time-varying shapes, within the viewpoint of optimal control. We focus here on second-order linear parabolic equations where the shape acts as a source term and we seek the optimal time-varying shape that minimizes a quadratic criterion. We first establish existence of optimal solutions under some appropriate sufficient conditions. We then provide necessary conditions for optimality in terms of adjoint equations and, using the concept of strict dissipativity, we prove that state and adjoint satisfy the measure-turnpike property, meaning that the…
We consider the problem of minimizing the entropy, energy, or exergy production for state transitions of irreversible port-Hamiltonian systems subject to control constraints. Via a dissipativity-based analysis we show that optimal solutions exhibit the manifold turnpike phenomenon with respect to the manifold of thermodynamic equilibria. We illustrate our analytical findings via numerical results for a heat exchanger.
