We prove some results on the density and multiplicity of positive solutions to the prescribed Webster scalar curvature problem on the $(2n+1)$-dimensional standard unit CR sphere $(\mathbb{S} ^{2n+1},θ_0)$. Specifically, we construct arbitrarily many multi-bump solutions via the variational gluing method. In particular, we show the Webster scalar curvature functions of contact forms conformal to $θ_0$ are $C^{0}$-dense among bounded functions which are positive somewhere. Existence results of infinitely many positive solutions to the related equation $-Δ_{\mathbb{H}} u=R(ξ) u^{(n+2) /n}$ on the Heisenberg group $\Hn $ with $R(ξ)$ being asymptotically periodic with respect to left translation are also obtained. Our proofs make use of a refined analysis of bubbling behavior, gradient flow, Pohozaev identity, as well as blow up arguments.
We prove some basic inequalities relating the Gagliardo-Nirenberg seminorms of a symmetric function $u$ on $\mathbb R^n$ and of its perturbation $uφ_μ$, where $φ_μ$ is a suitably chosen eigenfunction of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the sphere $\mathbb S^{n-1}$, thus providing a technical but rather powerful tool to detect symmetry breaking and multiplicity phenomena in variational equations driven by the fractional Laplace operator. A concrete application to a problem related to the fractional Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality is given.
We prove new multiplicity results for the Brezis-Nirenberg problem for the $p$-Laplacian. Our proofs are based on a new abstract critical point theorem involving the ${\mathbb Z}_2$-cohomological index that requires less compactness than the (PS) condition.
We obtain existence, multiplicity, and bifurcation results for the Brezis-Nirenberg problem for the fractional $p$\nobreakdash-Laplacian operator, involving critical Hardy-Sobolev exponents. Our results are mainly extend results in the literature for $α=0$. In the absence of an explicit formula for a minimizer in the fractional Hardy-Sobolev inequality $α\not= 0$, we get around this difficulty by working with certain asymptotic estimates for minimizers recently obtained in \cite{MM}.
The present paper deals with a parametrized Kirchhoff type problem involving a critical nonlinearity in high dimension. Existence, non existence and multiplicity of solutions are obtained under the effect of a subcritical perturbation by combining variational properties with a careful analysis of the fiber maps of the energy functional associated to the problem. The particular case of a pure power perturbation is also addressed. Through the study of the Nehari manifolds we extend the general case to a wider range of the parameters.
We prove a bifurcation and multiplicity result that is independent of the dimension N for a critical p-Laplacian problem that is the analog of the Brezis-Nirenberg problem for the quasilinear case. This extends a result in the literature for the semilinear case.
We prove the existence of infinitely many classical periodic solutions for a class of semilinear wave equations with periodic boundary conditions. Our argument relies on some new estimates for the linear problem with periodic boundary conditions, by combining Littlewood-Paley techniques, the Hausdorff-Young theorem, and a variational formulation due to Rabinowitz. We also develop a new approach to the regularity of the distributional solutions, by employing Gagliardo-Nirenberg estimates.
We study a Dirichlet type problem for an equation involving the fractional Laplacian and a reaction term subject to either subcritical or critical growth conditions, depending on a positive parameter. Applying a critical point result of Bonanno, we prove existence of one or two positive solutions as soon as the parameter lies under a (explicitly determined) threshold. As an application, we find two positive solutions for a fractional Brezis-Nirenberg problem.
We prove existence of infinitely many classical periodic solutions with periodic boundary conditions for a class of monotone semilinear wave equations. Our argument relies on some new estimates for the linear problem with periodic boundary conditions by combining Littewood-Paley techniques, the Hausdorff-Young theorem and a variational formulation due to Rabinowitz. We also develop a new approach to the regularity of distributional solutions by differentiating the equations and employing Gagliardo-Nirenberg estimates.
In this paper we prove existence and multiplicity of positive and sign-changing solutions to the pure critical exponent problem for the $p$-Laplacian operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded domain having nontrivial topology and discrete symmetry. Pioneering works related to the case $p=2$ are H. Brezis and L. Nirenberg [4], J.-M. Coron [10], and A. Bahri and J.-M. Coron [3]. A global compactness analysis is given for the Palais-Smale sequences in the presence of symmetries.
Let $({M},\textsf{d},\textsf{m})$ be a metric measure space which satisfies the Lott-Sturm-Villani curvature-dimension condition $\textsf{CD}(K,n)$ for some $K\geq 0$ and $n\geq 2$, and a lower $n-$density assumption at some point of $M$. We prove that if $({M},\textsf{d},\textsf{m})$ supports the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality or any of its limit cases ($L^p-$logarithmic Sobolev inequality or Faber-Krahn-type inequality), then a global non-collapsing $n-$dimensional volume growth holds, i.e., there exists a universal constant $C_0>0$ such that $\textsf{m}( B_x(ρ))\geq C_0 ρ^n$ for all $x\in {…
We prove existence and multiplicity results for a $N$-Laplacian problem with a critical exponential nonlinearity that is a natural analog of the Brezis-Nirenberg problem for the borderline case of the Sobolev inequality. This extends results in the literature for the semilinear case $N = 2$ to all $N \ge 2$. When $N > 2$ the nonlinear operator $- Δ_N$ has no linear eigenspaces and hence this extension requires new abstract critical point theorems that are not based on linear subspaces. We prove new abstract results based on the ${\mathbb Z}_2$-cohomological index and a related pseudo-index tha…
In this article, we study the Brezis-Nirenberg type problem of nonlinear Choquard equation involving a fractional Laplacian \[ (-\De)^s u = \left( \int_{\Om}\frac{|u|^{2^*_{μ,s}}}{|x-y|^μ}\mathrm{d}y \right)|u|^{2^*_{μ,s}-2}u +\la u \; \text{in } \Om,\] where $\Om $ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb R^n$ with Lipschitz boundary, $\la $ is a real parameter, $s \in (0,1)$, $n >2s$ and $2^*_{μ,s}= (2n-μ)/(n-2s)$ is the critical exponent in the sense of Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality. We obtain some existence, multiplicity, regularity and nonexistence results for solution of the above equation …
We show that, if $b\in L^1(0,T;L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R}))$ has spatial derivative in the John-Nirenberg space $\mathrm{BMO}(\mathbb{R})$, then it generalizes a unique flow $ϕ(t,\cdot)$ which has an $A_\infty(\mathbb R)$ density for each time $t\in [0,T]$. Our condition on the map $b$ is optimal and we also get a sharp quantitative estimate for the density. As a natural application we establish a well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of the transport equation in $\mathrm{BMO}(\mathbb R)$.
We consider integral area-minimizing $2$-dimensional currents $T$ in $U\subset \mathbb R^{2+n}$ with $\partial T = Q[\![Γ]\!]$, where $Q\in \mathbb N \setminus \{0\}$ and $Γ$ is sufficiently smooth. We prove that, if $q\in Γ$ is a point where the density of $T$ is strictly below $\frac{Q+1}{2}$, then the current is regular at $q$. The regularity is understood in the following sense: there is a neighborhood of $q$ in which $T$ consists of a finite number of regular minimal submanifolds meeting transversally at $Γ$ (and counted with the appropriate integer multiplicity). In view of well-known ex…
