We reveal that the information exchange between particle detectors and their ability to harvest correlations from a quantum field can interfere constructively and destructively. This allows for scenarios where the presence of entanglement in the quantum field is actually detrimental to the process of getting the two detectors entangled.

We investigate vacuum entanglement harvesting in the presence of a zero mode. We show that, for a variety of detector models and couplings (namely, Unruh-DeWitt qubit and harmonic oscillator detectors, amplitude and derivative coupling), the results are strongly dependent on the state of the zero mode, revealing an ambiguity in studies of entanglement harvesting with Neumann or periodic boundary conditions, or in general in spacetimes with toroidal topologies.
We implement the entanglement harvesting protocol, in which two Unruh-DeWitt detectors become entangled through local interactions with a quantum field, for the first time in the vicinity of a black hole. Our study, focusing on the BTZ black hole, reveals that black holes inhibit entanglement harvesting. The entanglement harvested rapidly falls to zero when two detectors with fixed proper separation approach the horizon. This effect is a combination of black hole radiation and gravitational red shift, both generic properties of horizons, suggesting it is a general result for black holes.
We analyze entanglement harvesting for arbitrary initial states of particle detectors and arbitrary quasifree states of the field. Despite the fact that spatially smeared particle detectors are known to break covariance for arbitrary initial states, we show that the entanglement harvested by a pair of detectors from a quasifree state of a scalar field is a covariant quantity up to second order in perturbation theory.
Entanglement harvesting from the quantum field is a well-known fact that, in recent times, is being rigorously investigated further in flat and different curved backgrounds. The usually understood formulation studies the possibility of two uncorrelated Unruh-DeWitt detectors getting entangled over time due to the effects of quantum vacuum fluctuations. Our current work presents a thorough formulation to realize the entanglement harvesting from non-vacuum background fluctuations. In particular, we further consider single excitation field states and a pair of inertial detectors, respectively, in…
We study how two fully-featured hydrogenlike atoms harvest entanglement from the electromagnetic field vacuum, even when the atoms are spacelike separated. We compare the electromagnetic case ---qualitatively and quantitatively--- with previous results that used scalar fields and featureless, idealized atomic models. Our study reveals the new traits that emerge when we relax these idealizations, such as anisotropies in entanglement harvesting and the effect of exchange of angular momentum. We show that, under certain circumstances, relaxing previous idealizations makes vacuum entanglement harv…
We explore whether acceleration assists entanglement harvesting for a pair of uniformly accelerated detectors in three different acceleration scenarios, i.e., parallel, anti-parallel and mutually perpendicular acceleration, both in the sense of the entanglement harvested and harvesting-achievable separation between the two detectors. Within the framework of entanglement harvesting protocols and the Unruh-DeWitt model of detectors locally interacting with massless scalar fields via a Gaussian switching function with an interaction duration parameter, we find that, in the sense of the entangleme…
We analyzed how entanglement harvesting is affected by the performance of a measurement on the quantum field. The measurement on the field is modelled as the coupling of a particle detector to the field, followed by a projective measurement performed on the detector. In our analysis, we considered different arrangements for two detectors harvesting entanglement and an ancillary detector used to perform a measurement. We found different regimes for how performing measurements on the field affects the entanglement harvested, depending on the initial and final states of the detector used to measu…
We study the harvesting of entanglement and mutual information by Unruh-DeWitt particle detectors from thermal and squeezed coherent field states. We prove (for arbitrary spatial dimensions, switching profiles and detector smearings) that while the entanglement harvesting ability of detectors decreases monotonically with the field temperature $T$, harvested mutual information grows linearly with $T$. We also show that entanglement harvesting from a general squeezed coherent state is independent of the coherent amplitude, but depends strongly on the squeezing amplitude. Moreover, we find that h…
We explore the crucial role of relative space-time positioning between the two detectors in an operational two-party entanglement-harvesting protocol. Specifically we show that the protocol is robust if imprecision in spatial positioning and clock synchronization are much smaller than the spatial separation between the detectors and its light-crossing time thereof. This in principle guarantees robustness if the imprecision is comparable to a few times the size of the detectors, which suggests entanglement harvesting could be explored for tabletop experiments. On the other hand, keeping the eff…
We investigate the effects of field temperature $T^{(f)}$ on the entanglement harvesting between two uniformly accelerated detectors. For their parallel motion, the thermal nature of fields does not produce any entanglement, and therefore, the outcome is the same as the non-thermal situation. On the contrary, $T^{(f)}$ affects entanglement harvesting when the detectors are in anti-parallel motion, i.e., when detectors $A$ and $B$ are in the right and left Rindler wedges, respectively. While for $T^{(f)}=0$ entanglement harvesting is possible for all values of $A$'s acceleration $a_A$, in the p…
We investigate the protocol of entanglement harvesting, where two spacelike separated particle detectors extract quantum correlations from a quantum field. Specifically, we analyze the role of the mass of the field and the energy gap of the detectors in the protocol. Perhaps surprisingly, we find that there are regimes in which the entanglement harvested can increase with the mass of the field by decreasing the noise experienced by the detectors. Finally, we study the optimal relationship between the gap of the detectors and the other parameters of the setting that maximizes the entanglement h…
We analyze correlations between pairs of particle detectors quadratically coupled to a real scalar field. We find that, while a single quadratically coupled detector presents no divergences, when one considers pairs of detectors there emerge unanticipated persistent divergences (not regularizable via smooth switching or smearing) in the entanglement they acquire from the field. We have characterized such divergences, discussed whether a suitable regularization can allow for fair comparison of the entanglement harvesting ability of the quadratic and the linear couplings, and finally we have fou…
We explore entanglement harvesting with particle detectors that couple linearly to non-Hermitian fields. Specifically, we analyze the case of particle detectors coupled to a complex scalar quantum field and to a spin 1/2 fermionic field. We find that the complex scalar model can be a good approximation for the fermionic model in the protocol of entanglement harvesting when the mass of the field is sufficiently large compared to the inverse interaction time. Moreover, we show that by taking advantage of the U(1) degree of freedom of a complex detector it is possible to increase the harvested ne…
We present a comparison of the AQFT-based Fewster-Verch framework with the Unruh-DeWitt particle detector models commonly employed in relativistic quantum information and QFT in curved space. We use this comparison to respond to a recent paper [arXiv:2103.13400] in which it was argued that the Reeh-Schlieder theorem prevents weakly coupled local particle detectors from harvesting vacuum entanglement from a quantum field. Their claim can be traced back to the mixedness that a local particle detector cannot escape from because of the entanglement that it must have with the quantum fields outside…
We study, in the framework of the entanglement harvesting protocol, the entanglement harvesting of both a pair of inertial and uniformly accelerated detectors locally interacting with vacuum massless scalar fields subjected to a perfectly reflecting plane boundary. We find that the presence of the boundary generally degrades the harvested entanglement when two detectors are very close to the boundary. However, when the distance between detectors and the boundary becomes comparable to the interaction duration parameter, the amount of the harvested entanglement approaches a peak, which even goes…
We study entanglement harvested from a quantum field through local interaction with Unruh-DeWitt detectors undergoing linear acceleration. The interactions allow entanglement to be swapped locally from the field to the detectors. We find an enhancement in the entanglement harvesting by two detectors with anti-parallel acceleration over those with inertial motion. This enhancement is characterized by the presence of entanglement between two detectors that would otherwise maintain a separable state in the absence of relativistic motion (with the same distance of closest approach in both cases). …
It is well-known that the $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild and spatially flat FLRW spacetimes are conformally flat. This work examines entanglement harvesting from the conformal field vacuums in these spacetimes between two Unruh-DeWitt detectors, moving along outgoing null trajectories. In $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime, we considered the Boulware and Unruh vacuums for our investigations. In this analysis, one observes that while entanglement harvesting is possible in $(1+1)$ dimensional Schwarzschild and $(1+3)$ dimensional de Sitter spacetimes, it is not possible in the $(1+1)…
We consider entanglement harvesting in de Sitter space using a model of multiple qubit detectors. We obtain the formula of the entanglement negativity for this system. Applying the obtained formula, we find that it is possible to access to the entanglement on the super horizon scale if sufficiently large number of detectors are prepared. This result indicates the effect of the multipartite entanglement is crucial for detection of large scale entanglement in de Sitter space.
We study (non-perturbatively) the interactions of delta-coupled detectors with coherent states of a scalar field. We show that the time-evolved density matrix spectra of i) a single detector, ii) two detectors, and iii) the partial transpose of the latter, are all independent of which coherent state the field was in. Furthermore, we find that the eigenvalues in iii) are non-negative, implying that a delta-coupled detector pair cannot harvest entanglement from the vacuum, or any other coherent field state.
We make a detailed comparison between entanglement harvesting for uniformly accelerated detectors in vacuum and static ones in a thermal bath at the Unruh temperature and find that, for a small energy gap relative to the Heisenberg energy of the detectors, static detectors in the thermal bath can harvest more entanglement and possess a comparatively larger harvesting-achievable range than the uniformly accelerated ones; however, as the energy gap grows sufficiently large, the uniformly accelerated detectors are instead likely to harvest more entanglement and possess a relatively larger harvest…
We analyze the harvesting of entanglement and classical correlations from the quantum vacuum to particle detectors. We assess the impact on the detectors' harvesting ability of the spacetime dimensionality, the suddenness of the detectors' switching, their physical size and their internal energy structure. Our study reveals several interesting dependences on these parameters that can be used to optimize the harvesting of classical and quantum correlations. Furthermore, we find that, contrary to previous belief, smooth switching is much more efficient than sudden switching in order to harvest v…
We study the phenomenon of entanglement extraction from the vacuum of a massless scalar field in $(1+1)$ dimensional spacetime in presence of a moving Dirichlet boundary condition, i.e. mirror spacetime, using two inertial Unruh-DeWitt detectors. We consider a variety of non-trivial trajectories for these accelerating mirrors and find (1) an entanglement inhibition phenomenon similar to that recently seen for black holes, as well as (2) trajectory-independent entanglement enhancement in some regimes. We show that the qualitative result obtained is the same for both linear and derivative coupli…
We analyze a tripartite entanglement harvesting protocol with three Unruh-DeWitt detectors adiabatically interacting with a quantum scalar field. We consider linear, equilateral triangular, and scalene triangular configurations for the detectors. We find that, under the same parameters, more entanglement can be extracted in the linear configuration than the equilateral one, consistent with single instantaneous switching results. No bipartite entanglement is required to harvest tripartite entanglement. Furthermore, we find that tripartite entanglement can be harvested even if one detector is at…
We carry out the first investigation of the entanglement and mutual information harvesting protocols for detectors freely falling into a black hole. Working in $(1+1)$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole spacetime, we consider two pointlike Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detectors in different combinations of free-falling and static trajectories. Employing a generalization of relative velocity suitable for curved spacetimes, we find that the amount of correlations extracted from the black hole vacuum, at least outside the near-horizon regime, is largely kinematic in origin (i.e. it is mostly due to the r…
Quantum fields in vacuum states carry an infinite amount of quantum entanglement, and its entanglement entropy has the ultraviolet divergence. Harvesting protocols of the vacuum entanglement had been investigated, but its efficiency is very low to date. The main reason of the low efficiency originates from the fact that the extracted entanglement is embedded in a mixed state of two external devices. We propose a general protocol with high efficiency by extracting pure state entanglement from the field. We only use bi-linear interactions between the fields and external devices. Even though the …
We investigate the effects of relative motion on entanglement harvesting by considering a pair of Unruh-Dewitt detectors moving at arbitrary, but independent and constant velocities, both linearly interacting with the vacuum scalar field. Working within the weak coupling approximation, we find that the Negativity is a (non-elementary) function of the relative velocity of the detectors, as well as their energy gaps and minimal separation. We find parameter regions where Negativity increases with velocity up to a maximum and then decreases, reaching zero at some sublight velocity. At any given r…
We present a new technique for computing entanglement harvesting with Unruh-DeWitt particle detectors. The method is particularly useful in cases where analytic solutions are rare and the Wightman function is known only via its mode expansion for which numerical integration can become very expensive. By exploiting the conjugate symmetry of the Wightman function, we may split the integral into parts dependent on the commutator and anti-commutator of the field. In cases where the commutator vanishes, such as spacelike separation, or timelike separation if the strong Huygens principle holds, we t…
We study the properties of the transition probability and entanglement harvesting phenomenon for circularly accelerated detectors locally interacting with massless scalar fields. The dependence of the transition probability on the parameters associated with the circular motion is first analyzed in detail. By a cross-comparison with the situation of the uniformly accelerated motion, we obtain that the transition probability and the possible thermalization behavior for detectors rotating with an extremely large circular radius are analogous to that for uniformly accelerated detectors, but for a …
We study entanglement harvesting for matter systems such as atoms, ions or molecules, whose center of mass degrees of freedom are quantum delocalized and which couple to a relativistic quantum field. We employ a generalized Unruh-deWitt detector model for the light-matter interaction, and we investigate how the coherent spreading of the quantum center of mass wave function of two delocalized detector systems impacts their ability to become entangled with one another, via their respective interaction with a quantum field. For very massive detectors with initially highly localized centers of mas…
It has been shown that the vacuum state of a free quantum field is entangled and such vacuum entanglement can be harvested by a pair of initially uncorrelated detectors interacting locally with the vacuum field for a finite time. In this paper, we examine the entanglement harvesting phenomenon of two non-identical inertial detectors with different energy gaps locally interacting with massless scalar fields via a Gaussian switching function. We focus on how entanglement harvesting depends on the energy gap difference from two perspectives: the amount of entanglement harvested and the harvesting…
We study the harvesting of quantum and classical correlations from a hot scalar field in a periodic cavity by a pair of spatially separated oscillator-detectors. Specifically, we utilize non-perturbative and exact (non-numerical) techniques to solve for the evolution of the detectors-field system and then we examine how the entanglement, Gaussian quantum discord, and mutual information obtained by the detectors change with the temperature of the field. While (as expected) the harvested entanglement rapidly decays to zero as temperature is increased, we find remarkably that both the mutual info…
Light harvesting components of photosynthetic organisms are complex, coupled, many-body quantum systems, in which electronic coherence has recently been shown to survive for relatively long time scales despite the decohering effects of their environments. Within this context, we analyze entanglement in multi-chromophoric light harvesting complexes, and establish methods for quantification of entanglement by presenting necessary and sufficient conditions for entanglement and by deriving a measure of global entanglement. These methods are then applied to the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) protein to…
We consider acceleration-assisted entanglement harvesting as evidenced in correlations between two accelerating Unruh detectors coupled to a scalar field. We elaborate on earlier studies, which in a stationary phase approximation calculated the entanglement dependence on two parameters $c_1 = κL$, and $c_2 = κΩσ^2$, where $κ$ describes the detector's acceleration, $L$ their separation and $Ω$ the energy splitting in a pair of two state Unruh detectors. Here, we go beyond the stationary phase approximation by performing a numerical calculation of entanglement harvesting, allowing us to present …
