英文摘要:
A non-perturbative and background-independent quantum formulation of quadratic gravity is provided. A canonical quantization procedure introduced in previous works, named after Dirac and Pauli, is here applied to quadratic gravity to obtain, as required by consistency, a well-defined Euclidean path integral. The theory is unitary: all probabilities are non negative and they sum up to one. We obtain path-integral expressions for the transition amplitudes, Green's functions and generic matrix elements of time-ordered products of the metric. As a byproduct, similar results are also obtained for a scalar-field four-derivative interacting model. In this way, among other things, previous perturbative and background-dependent calculations are justified. The (quantum) quadratic gravity effective action, whose field equations determine the vacuum expectation value of the metric in the presence of a generic energy-momentum tensor, is constructed. The classical limit of the effective action turns out to be equivalent to the starting classical action of quadratic gravity, whose runaway rates were previously shown to be slow enough to be compatible with observations. Finally, the constructed non-perturbative and background-independent quantum quadratic gravity is applied to quantum cosmology to obtain a path-integral expression for the wave function of the universe, which satisfies a sort of Wheeler-DeWitt equation. This application allows us to understand at the quantum level why our universe is nearly homogeneous and isotropic.
We consider perturbative solutions to the classical field equations coming from a quadratic gravitational lagrangian in four dimensions. We study the charged, spherically symmetric black hole and explicitly give corrections up to third order (in the coupling constant $β$ multiplying the $R_{μν}R^{μν}$ term) to the Reissner--Nordström hole metric. We consider the thermodynamics of such black holes, in particular, we compute explicitly its temperature and entropy--area relation which deviates from the usual $S=A/4$ expression.
The recent formulation of locally covariant quantum field theory may open the way towards a background independent perturbative formulation of Quantum Gravity.
A Wheeler-Dewitt quantum constraint operator for four-dimensional, non-perturbative Lorentzian vacuum quantum gravity is defined in the continuum. The regulated Wheeler-DeWitt constraint operator is densely defined, does not require any renormalization and the final operator is anomaly-free and at least symmmetric. The technique introduced here can also be used to produce a couple of other completely well-defined regulated operators including but not exhausting a) the Euclidean Wheeler-DeWitt operator, b)the generator of the Wick rotation transform that maps solutions to the Euclidean Hamilton…
Utilizing a first-order perturbative superspace approach, we derive the bosonic equations of motion for the 10D, N = 1 supergravity fields. We give the Lagrangian corresponding to these equations derived from superspace geometry. Moreover, the equivalence of this Lagrangian to the first-order perturbative component level Lagrangian of anomaly-free supergravity is proven. Our treatment covers both the two-form and six-form formulations.
A recent QCD formulation that is non-perturbative, finite, gauge-invariant, exact emerged from Schwinger's Generating Functional. A first test of the validity of this formulation is provided here against elastic proton-proton scattering at the Intersecting Storage Rings, ISR, energies. Extension to LHC energies is underway.
We provide a simple non-perturbative formulation for non-commutative four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. The formulation is constructed by a combination of deconstruction (orbifold projection), momentum cut-off and matrix model techniques. We also propose a moduli fixing term that preserves lattice supersymmetry on the deconstruction formulation. Although the analogous formulation for four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories is proposed also in Nucl.Phys.B857(2012), our action is simpler and better suited for computer simulations. Moreover, not only for …
A connection between non-perturbative formulations of quantum gravity and perturbative string theory is exhibited, based on a formulation of the non-perturbative dynamics due to Markopoulou. In this formulation the dynamics of spin network states and their generalizations is described in terms of histories which have discrete analogues of the causal structure and many fingered time of Lorentzian spacetimes. Perturbations of these histories turn out to be described in terms of spin systems defined on 2-dimensional timelike surfaces embedded in the discrete spacetime. When the history has a clas…
We formulate here a new world-sheet renormalization-group technique for the bosonic string, which is non-perturbative in the Regge slope alpha' and based on a functional method for controlling the quantum fluctuations, whose magnitudes are scaled by the value of alpha'. Using this technique we exhibit, in addition to the well-known linear-dilaton cosmology, a new, non-perturbative time-dependent background solution. Using the reparametrization invariance of the string S-matrix, we demonstrate that this solution is conformally invariant to alpha', and we give a heuristic inductive argument that…
We present a simplified formulation of massive gravity where the Higgs fields have quadratic kinetic term. This new formulation allows us to prove in a very explicit way that all massive gravity theories considered so far inevitably have Boulware-Deser ghost in non-trivial fluctuations of background metric.
A new light-front formulation of Q.E.D. is developed, within the framework of standard perturbation theory, in which $x^+$ plays the role of the evolution parameter and the gauge choice is $A_+=0$ (light-front "temporal" gauge). It is shown that this formulation leads to the Mandelstam-Leibbrandt causal prescription for the non-covariant singularities in the photon propagator. Furthermore, it is proved that the dimensionally regularized one loop off-shell amplitudes exactly coincide with the correct ones, as computed within the standard approach using ordinary space-time coordinates.
Perturbative solutions to the fourth-order gravity describing spherically-symmetric, static and electrically charged black hole in an asymptotically de Sitter universe is constructed and discussed. Special emphasis is put on the lukewarm configurations, in which the temperature of the event horizon equals the temperature of the cosmological horizon.
The Lagrangian frame-like formulation of free higher spin symmetric bosonic AdS(d) fields is given within a manifestly sp(2) invariant framework. It is designed to deal with infinite multiplets of fields appearing as gauge connections of the higher spin algebras.
It is shown how to obtain the consistent light front form quantization of a non-Abelian pure Yang-Mills theory (gluondynamics) in the framework of the standard perturbative approach. After a short review of the previous attempts in the light cone gauge $A_-=0$, it is explained how the difficulties can be overcome after turning to the anti light cone gauge $A_+=0$. In particular, the generating functional of the renormalized Green's functions turns out to be the same as in the conventional instant form approach, leading to the Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription for the free gluon propagator.
We apply to non-critical bosonic Liouville string models, characterized by a central-charge deficit Q, a new non-perturbative renormalization-group technique based on a functional method for controlling the quantum fluctuations. We demonstrate the existence of a renormalization-group fixed point of Liouville string theory as Q to 0, in which limit the target space-time is Minkowski and the dynamics of the Liouville field is trivial, as it neither propagates nor interacts. This calculation supports in a non-trival manner the identification of the zero mode of the Liouville field with the target…
A perturbative regime based on contortion as a dynamical variable and metric as a (classical) fixed background, is performed in the context of a pure Yang-Mills formulation for gravity in a $2+1$ dimensional space-time. In the massless case we show that the theory contains three degrees of freedom and only one is a non-unitary mode. Next, we introduce quadratical terms dependent on torsion, which preserve parity and general covariance. The linearized version reproduces an analogue Hilbert-Einstein-Fierz-Pauli unitary massive theory plus three massless modes, two of them represents non-unitary …
We employ non-perturbative renormalisation group methods to compute the full momentum dependence of propagators in quantum gravity in general dimensions. We disentangle all different graviton and Faddeev-Popov ghost modes and find qualitative differences in the momentum dependence of their propagators. This allows us to reconstruct the form factors quadratic in curvature from first principles, which enter physical observables like scattering cross sections. The results are qualitatively stable under variations of the gauge fixing choice.
We review some aspects of the non-perturbative formulation of 2-dim. string theory in terms of non-relativistic fermions. We derive the bosonization using $W_\infty$ coherent states in the path-integral formulation. We discuss the classical limit and indicate the precise nature of the truncation of the full theory that leads to collective field theory. As applications we briefly discuss classical solutions reponsible for stringy non-perturbative effects and the 2-dim. black-hole.
We address the problem of a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory by means of the recently proposed matrix models. For the model by Ishibashi, Kawai, Kitazawa and Tsuchiya (IKKT), we perform one-loop calculation of the interaction between operator-like solutions identified with D-brane configurations of type IIB superstring (in particular, for parallel moving and rotated static p-branes). Comparing to the superstring calculations, we show that the matrix model reproduces the superstring results only at large distances or small velocities, corresponding to keeping only the lowest m…
We construct a new perturbative formulation of pure space-like axial gauge QED in which the inherent infrared divergences are regularized by residual gauge fields. For that purpose we perform our calculations in coordinates $x^μ=(x^+,x^-,x^1,x^2)$, where $x^+=x^0\sinθ+x^3\cos θ$ and $x^-=x^0\cosθ-x^3\sinθ$. $A_-=A^0\cosθ+A^3 \sinθ=n{\cdot}A=0$ is taken as the gauge fixing condition. We show in detail that, in perturbation theory, infrared divergences resulting from the residual gauge fields cancel infrared divergences resulting from the physical parts of the gauge field. As a result we obtain …
String geometry theory is one of the candidates of the non-perturbative formulation of string theory. In arXiv:1709.03506, the perturbative string theory is reproduced from a string geometry model coupled with a $u(1)$ gauge field on string manifolds. In this paper, we generalize this result and we show that the perturbative string theory is reproduced from any string geometry model by taking a Newtonian limit.

In this paper, we describe the first steps towards fully non-perturbative cosmology. We explain why the conventional methods used by cosmologists based on the ADM formulation are generally inadequate for this purpose and why it is advantageous instead to adapt the harmonic formulation pioneered and utilized in mathematical and numerical relativity. Here we focus on using this approach to evaluating the linear mode stability in homogeneous and nearly homogeneous backgrounds and devising a valid scheme and diagnostics for numerical computation. We also briefly touch on the relevance of these met…
We study a non-perturbative formulation of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) on RxS^3 proposed in arXiv:0807.2352. This formulation is based on the large-N reduction, and the theory can be described as a particular large-N limit of the plane wave matrix model (PWMM), which is obtained by dimensionally reducing the original theory over S^3. In this paper, we perform some tests for this proposal. We construct an operator in the PWMM that corresponds to the Wilson loop in SYM in the continuum limit and calculate the vacuum expectation value of the operator for the case of the circular contour. We…
It is argued that the quadratic and linear non-commutative IR divergences that occur in U(1) theory on non-commutative Minkowski spacetime for small non-commutativity matrices $θ^{μν}$ are gauge-fixing independent. This implies in particular that the perturbative tachyonic instability produced by the quadratic divergences of this type in the vacuum polarization tensor is not a gauge-fixing artifact. Supersymmetry can be introduced to remove from the renormalized Green functions at one loop, not only the non-logarithmic non-commutative IR divergences, but also all terms proportional to $θ^{μν}p…
We discuss how the perturbative particle paradigm fails in certain background with space-like singularity but asymptotically flat which should admit a S-matrix. The Feynman approach relies on the interaction picture. This approach means that we can interpret interactions as exchanges of particles. Particles are the modes of the quadratic part of the Lagrangian. In certain backgrounds with space-like singularity the interaction Hamiltonian is well defined but the perturbative expansion of the evolution operator through the singularity and the perturbative $S$ matrix do not exist. On the other h…
Recently a new type of quadratic gauge was introduced in QCD in which the degrees of freedom are suggestive of a phase of abelian dominance. In its simplest form it is also free of Gribov ambiguity. However this gauge is not suitable for usual perturbation theory. The finite field dependent BRST (FFBRST) transformation is a method established to interrelate generating functionals for different effective versions of gauge fixed field theories. In this paper we propose a FFBRST transformation suitable for transforming the theory in the new quadratic gauge into the standard Lorenz gauge Faddeev-P…
We consider the perturbative construction, proposed in [37], for a thermal state $Ω_{β,λV\{f\}}$ for the theory of a real scalar Klein-Gordon field $ϕ$ with interacting potential $V\{f\}$. Here $f$ is a spacetime cut-off of the interaction $V$ and $λ$ is a perturbative parameter. We assume that $V$ is quadratic in the field $ϕ$ and we compute the adiabatic limit $f\to 1$ of the state $Ω_{β,λV\{f\}}$. The limit is shown to exist, moreover, the perturbative series in $λ$ sums up to the thermal state for the corresponding (free) theory with potential $V$. In addition, we exploit the same methods …
The recently proposed generalized field method for solving the master equation of Batalin and Vilkovisky is applied to a gauge theory of quadratic Lie algebras in 2-dimensions. The charge corresponding to BRST symmetry derived from this solution in terms of the phase space variables by using the Noether procedure, and the one found due to the BFV-method are compared and found to coincide. $W_3$ algebra, formulated in terms of a continuous variable is emploied in the mentioned gauge theory to construct a $W_3$ topological gravity. Moreover, its gauge fixing is briefly discussed.
We investigate the non-perturbative renormalization group flow of the scalar Galileon model in flat space. We discuss different expansion schemes of the Galileon truncation, including a heat-kernel based derivative expansion, a vertex expansion in momentum space and a curvature expansion in terms of a covariant geometric formulation. We find that the Galileon symmetry prevents a quantum induced renormalization group running of the Galileon couplings. Consequently, the Galileon truncation only features a trivial Gaussian fixed point.
We present a formulation to give renormalon-free predictions consistently with fixed order perturbative results. The formulation has a similarity to Lee's method in that the renormalon-free part consists of two parts: one is given by a series expansion which does not contain renormalons and the other is the real part of the Borel integral of a singular Borel transform. The main novel aspect is to evaluate the latter object using a dispersion relation technique, which was possible only in the large-$β_0$ approximation. Here, we introduce an "ambiguity function," which is defined by inverse Mell…
We show that the Green's functions in non-linear gauge in the theory of perturbative quantum gravity is expressed as a series in terms of those in linear gauges. This formulation is also holds for operator Green's functions. We further derive the explicit relation between the Green's functions in the theory of perturbative quantum gravity in a pair of arbitary gauges. This process involves some sort of modified FFBRST transformations which is derivable from infinitesimal field-dependent BRST transformations.
By dressing Polyakov lines with appropriate functionals of the gauge fields, we construct observables describing a fundamental representation static quark-antiquark pair in the singlet, adjoint and average channels of SU(N) pure gauge theory. Each of the potentials represents a gauge invariant eigenvalue of the Hamiltonian. Numerical simulations are performed for SU(2) in 2+1 dimensions. The adjoint channel is found to be repulsive at small and confining at large separations, suggesting the existence of a metastable (N^2-1)-plet bound state. For small distances and temperatures above the decon…
We develop a method for solving the field equations of a quadratic gravitational theory coupled to matter. The quadratic terms are written as a function of the matter stress tensor and its derivatives in such a way to have, order by order, a set of Einstein field equations with an effective $T_{μν}$. We study the cosmological scenario recovering the de Sitter exact solution, and the first order (in the coupling constants $α$ and $β$ appearing in the gravitational Lagrangian) solution to the gauge cosmic string metric and the charged black hole. For this last solution we discuss the consequence…
How can we relate the constraint structure and constraint dynamics of the general gauge theory in the Hamiltonian formulation with specific features of the theory in the Lagrangian formulation, especially relate the constraint structure with the gauge transformation structure of the Lagrangian action? How can we construct the general expression for the gauge charge if the constraint structure in the Hamiltonian formulation is known? Whether can we identify the physical functions defined as commuting with first-class constraints in the Hamiltonian formulation and the physical functions defined …
The functional Schrodinger picture formulation of quantum field theory and the variational Gaussian approximation method based on the formulation are briefly reviewed. After presenting recent attempts to improve the variational approximation, we introduce a new systematic method based on the background field method, which enables one to compute the order-by-order correction terms to the Gaussian approximation of the effective action.
Hydrodynamics can be formulated in terms of a perturbative series in derivatives of the temperature, chemical potential, and flow velocity around an equilibrium state. Different formulations for this series have been proposed over the years, which consequently led to the development of various hydrodynamic theories. In this work, we discuss the relativistic generalizations of the perturbative expansions put forward by Chapman and Enskog, and Hilbert, using general matching conditions in kinetic theory. This allows us to describe, in a comprehensive way, how different out-of-equilibrium definit…
Some features of Einstein gravity are most easily understood from string theory but are not manifest at the level of the usual Lagrangian formulation. One example is the factorization of gravity amplitudes into gauge theory amplitudes. Based on the recently constructed `double field theory' and a geometrical frame-like formalism developed by Siegel, we provide a framework of perturbative Einstein gravity coupled to a 2-form and a dilaton in which, as a consequence of T-duality, the Feynman rules factorize to all orders in perturbation theory. We thereby establish the precise relation between t…
We elaborate on the relation between perturbative and power-like corrections to short-distance sensitive QCD observables. We confront theoretical expectations with explicit perturbative calculations existing in literature. As is expected, the quadratic correction is dual to a long perturbative series and one should use one of them but not both. However, this might be true only for very long perturbative series, with number of terms needed in most cases exceeding the number of terms available. What has not been foreseen, the quartic corrections might also be dual to the perturbative series. If …
A perturbative formulation of algebraic field theory is presented, both for the classical and for the quantum case, and it is shown that the relation between them may be understood in terms of deformation quantization.
We define string geometry: spaces of superstrings including the interactions, their topologies, charts, and metrics. Trajectories in asymptotic processes on a space of strings reproduce the right moduli space of the super Riemann surfaces in a target manifold. Based on the string geometry, we define Einstein-Hilbert action coupled with gauge fields, and formulate superstring theory non-perturbatively by summing over metrics and the gauge fields on the spaces of strings. This theory does not depend on backgrounds. The theory has a supersymmetry as a part of the diffeomorphisms symmetry on the s…
A review is given of the implications of supersymmetric black holes for the non-perturbative formulation of toroidally compactified superstrings, with particular emphasis on symmetry enhancement at special vacua and S-duality of the heterotic string.
Recently, Grabowska and Kaplan constructed a four-dimensional lattice formulation of chiral gauge theories on the basis of the chiral overlap operator. At least in the tree-level approximation, the left-handed fermion is coupled only to the original gauge field~$A$, while the right-handed one is coupled only to the gauge field~$A_\star$, a deformation of~$A$ by the gradient flow with infinite flow time. In this paper, we study the fermion one-loop effective action in their formulation. We show that the continuum limit of this effective action contains local interaction terms between $A$ and~$A…
We use the exact renormalization group (ERG) perturbatively to construct the Wilson action for the two-dimensional O(N) non-linear sigma model. The construction amounts to regularization of a non-linear symmetry with a momentum cutoff. A quadratically divergent potential is generated by the momentum cutoff, but its non-invariance is compensated by the jacobian of the non-linear symmetry transformation.
We analyse the IR-singularities that appear in a noncommutative scalar quantum field theory on $\mathcal{E}_4$. We demonstrate with the help of the quadratic one-loop effective action and an appropriate field redefinition that no IR-singularities exist. No new degrees of freedom are needed to describe the UV/IR-mixing.
Two different scenarios (light-front and equal-time) are possible for Yang-Mills theories in two dimensions. The exact $\bar q q$-potential can be derived in perturbation theory starting from the light-front vacuum, but requires essential instanton contributions in the equal-time formulation. In higher dimensions no exact result is available and, paradoxically, only the latter formulation (equal-time) is acceptable, at least in a perturbative context.
The scattering equivalence of quantum field theories formulated with light-front and instant-form kinematic subgroups is established using non-perturbative methods. The difficulty with field theoretic formulations of Dirac's forms of dynamics is that the free and interacting unitary representations of the Poincaré group are defined on inequivalent representations of the Hilbert space, which means that the concept of kinematic transformations must be modified on the Hilbert space of the field theory. This work addresses this problem by assuming the existence of a field theory with the expected …

We provide a quantum-field theoretic formulation of dressed particle dynamics that systematically include particle production and scattering/decay processes in the preheating era. Our approach is based on the so-called perturbation theory in the Furry picture, in which coherent background fields (i.e., inflaton and the expanding Universe) are treated non-perturbatively whereas interactions between dressed particles are taken into account perturbatively. As application, we consider the instant preheating mechanism and compute the number of produced particles explicitly, assuming that the cohere…
