Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have proved as a powerful framework for denoising applications in medical imaging. However, GAN-based denoising algorithms still suffer from limitations in capturing complex relationships within the images. In this regard, the loss function plays a crucial role in guiding the image generation process, encompassing how much a synthetic image differs from a real image. To grasp highly complex and non-linear textural relationships in the training process, this work presents a novel approach to capture and embed multi-scale texture information into the loss function. Our method introduces a differentiable multi-scale texture representation of the images dynamically aggregated by a self-attention layer, thus exploiting end-to-end gradient-based optimization. We validate our approach by carrying out extensive experiments in the context of low-dose CT denoising, a challenging application that aims to enhance the quality of noisy CT scans. We utilize three publicly available datasets, including one simulated and two real datasets. The results are promising as compared to other well-established loss functions, being also consistent across three different GAN architectures. We tackle the problem of texture inpainting where the input images are textures with missing values along with masks that indicate the zones that should be generated. Many works have been done in image inpainting with the aim to achieve global and local consistency. But these works still suffer from limitations when dealing with textures. In fact, the local information in the image to be completed needs to be used in order to achieve local continuities and visually realistic texture inpainting. For this, we propose a new segmentor discriminator that performs a patch-wise real/fake classificati…

A wide variety of deep generative models has been developed in the past decade. Yet, these models often struggle with simultaneously addressing three key requirements including: high sample quality, mode coverage, and fast sampling. We call the challenge imposed by these requirements the generative learning trilemma, as the existing models often trade some of them for others. Particularly, denoising diffusion models have shown impressive sample quality and diversity, but their expensive sampling does not yet allow them to be applied in many real-world applications. In this paper, we argue that…
Recently, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have emerged as a popular alternative for modeling complex high dimensional distributions. Most of the existing works implicitly assume that the clean samples from the target distribution are easily available. However, in many applications, this assumption is violated. In this paper, we consider the observation setting when the samples from target distribution are given by the superposition of two structured components and leverage GANs for learning the structure of the components. We propose two novel frameworks: denoising-GAN and demixing-GAN.…

The earth texture with complex morphological geometry and compositions such as shale and carbonate rocks, is typically characterized with sparse field samples because of an expensive and time-consuming characterization process. Accordingly, generating arbitrary large size of the geological texture with similar topological structures at a low computation cost has become one of the key tasks for realistic geomaterial reconstruction. Recently, generative adversarial neural networks (GANs) have demonstrated a potential of synthesizing input textural images and creating equiprobable geomaterial ima…

Magnetic resonance imaging plays an important role in computer-aided diagnosis and brain exploration. However, limited by hardware, scanning time and cost, it's challenging to acquire high-resolution (HR) magnetic resonance (MR) image clinically. In this paper, fine perceptive generative adversarial networks (FP-GANs) is proposed to produce HR MR images from low-resolution counterparts. It can cope with the detail insensitive problem of the existing super-resolution model in a divide-and-conquer manner. Specifically, FP-GANs firstly divides an MR image into low-frequency global approximation a…

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are considered the state-of-the-art in the field of image generation. They learn the joint distribution of the training data and attempt to generate new data samples in high dimensional space following the same distribution as the input. Recent improvements in GANs opened the field to many other computer vision applications based on improving and changing the characteristics of the input image to follow some given training requirements. In this paper, we propose a novel technique for the denoising and reconstruction of the micro-Doppler ($\boldsymbolμ$-D)…
Energy-based models parameterize the unnormalized log-probability of data samples, but there is a lack of guidance on how to construct the "energy". In this paper, we propose a Denoising-EBM which decomposes the image energy into "semantic energy" and "texture energy". We define the "semantic energy" in the latent space of DAE to model the high-level representations, and define the pixel-level reconstruction error for denoising as "texture energy". Inspired by score-based model, our model utilizes multi-scale noisy samples for maximum-likelihood training and it outputs a vector instead of a sc…
Recent advances show that Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) can synthesize images with smooth variations along semantically meaningful latent directions, such as pose, expression, layout, etc. While this indicates that GANs implicitly learn pixel-level correspondences across images, few studies explored how to extract them explicitly. In this work, we introduce Coordinate GAN (CoordGAN), a structure-texture disentangled GAN that learns a dense correspondence map for each generated image. We represent the correspondence maps of different images as warped coordinate frames transformed from …

Image reconstruction including image restoration and denoising is a challenging problem in the field of image computing. We present a new method, called X-GANs, for reconstruction of arbitrary corrupted resource based on a variant of conditional generative adversarial networks (conditional GANs). In our method, a novel generator and multi-scale discriminators are proposed, as well as the combined adversarial losses, which integrate a VGG perceptual loss, an adversarial perceptual loss, and an elaborate corresponding point loss together based on the analysis of image feature. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are neural networks that learn data distributions through adversarial training. In intensive studies, recent GANs have shown promising results for reproducing training images. However, in spite of noise, they reproduce images with fidelity. As an alternative, we propose a novel family of GANs called noise robust GANs (NR-GANs), which can learn a clean image generator even when training images are noisy. In particular, NR-GANs can solve this problem without having complete noise information (e.g., the noise distribution type, noise amount, or signal-noise …
Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are a recent approach to train generative models of data, which have been shown to work particularly well on image data. In the current paper we introduce a new model for texture synthesis based on GAN learning. By extending the input noise distribution space from a single vector to a whole spatial tensor, we create an architecture with properties well suited to the task of texture synthesis, which we call spatial GAN (SGAN). To our knowledge, this is the first successful completely data-driven texture synthesis method based on GANs. Our method has the fo…

In this paper, we improve Generative Adversarial Networks by incorporating a manifold learning step into the discriminator. We consider locality-constrained linear and subspace-based manifolds, and locality-constrained non-linear manifolds. In our design, the manifold learning and coding steps are intertwined with layers of the discriminator, with the goal of attracting intermediate feature representations onto manifolds. We adaptively balance the discrepancy between feature representations and their manifold view, which is a trade-off between denoising on the manifold and refining the manifol…

In this paper, we conduct an empirical study on fake/real faces, and have two important observations: firstly, the texture of fake faces is substantially different from real ones; secondly, global texture statistics are more robust to image editing and transferable to fake faces from different GANs and datasets. Image-to-image translation plays a vital role in tackling various medical imaging tasks such as attenuation correction, motion correction, undersampled reconstruction, and denoising. Generative adversarial networks have been shown to achieve the state-of-the-art in generating high fidelity images for these tasks. However, the state-of-the-art GAN-based frameworks do not estimate the uncertainty in the predictions made by the network that is essential for making informed medical decisions and subsequent revision by medical experts and has recently been shown to improve the performance and inter…

Reconstructing 3D human faces in the wild with the 3D Morphable Model (3DMM) has become popular in recent years. While most prior work focuses on estimating more robust and accurate geometry, relatively little attention has been paid to improving the quality of the texture model. Meanwhile, with the advent of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), there has been great progress in reconstructing realistic 2D images. Recent work demonstrates that GANs trained with abundant high-quality UV maps can produce high-fidelity textures superior to those produced by existing methods. However, acquiring …

Can we customize a deep generative model which can generate images that can match the texture of some given image? Here we present a method, for adapting GANs with one reference image, and then we can generate images that have similar textures to the given image. Specifically, we modify the weights of the pre-trained GAN model, guided by the reference image given by the user. We use a patch discriminator adversarial loss to encourage the output of the model to match the texture on the given image…

We propose a novel multi-texture synthesis model based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) with a user-controllable mechanism. The user control ability allows to explicitly specify the texture which should be generated by the model. This property follows from using an encoder part which learns a latent representation for each texture from the dataset. To ensure a dataset coverage, we use an adversarial loss function that penalizes for incorrect reproductions of a given texture. In experiments, we show that our model can learn descriptive texture manifolds for large datasets and from raw …

GAN inversion has been exploited in many face manipulation tasks, but 2D GANs often fail to generate multi-view 3D consistent images. The encoders designed for 2D GANs are not able to provide sufficient 3D information for the inversion and editing. Therefore, 3D-aware GAN inversion is proposed to increase the 3D editing capability of GANs. However, the 3D-aware GAN inversion remains under-explored. To tackle this problem, we propose a 3D-aware (3Da) encoder for GAN inversion and face editing based on the powerful StyleNeRF model. Our proposed 3Da encoder combines a parametric 3D face model wit…

LDCT has drawn major attention in the medical imaging field due to the potential health risks of CT-associated X-ray radiation to patients. Reducing the radiation dose, however, decreases the quality of the reconstructed images, which consequently compromises the diagnostic performance. Various deep learning techniques have been introduced to improve the image quality of LDCT images through denoising. GANs-based denoising methods usually leverage an additional classification network, i.e. discriminator, to learn the most discriminate difference between the denoised and normal-dose images and, …

The explosive rise of the use of Computer tomography (CT) imaging in medical practice has heightened public concern over the patient's associated radiation dose. However, reducing the radiation dose leads to increased noise and artifacts, which adversely degrades the scan's interpretability. In recent times, the deep learning-based technique has emerged as a dominant method…

A lifespan face synthesis (LFS) model aims to generate a set of photo-realistic face images of a person's whole life, given only one snapshot as reference. The generated face image given a target age code is expected to be age-sensitive reflected by bio-plausible transformations of shape and texture, while being identity preserving. This is extremely challenging because the shape and texture characteristics of a face undergo separate and highly nonlinear transformations w.r.t. age. Most recent LFS models are based on generative adversarial networks (GANs) whereby age code conditional transform…
Denoising diffusion probabilistic models (DDPM) are a class of generative models which have recently been shown to produce excellent samples. We show that with a few simple modifications, DDPMs can also achieve competitive log-likelihoods while maintaining high sample quality. Additionally, we find that learning variances of the reverse diffusion process allows sampling with an order of magnitude fewer forward passes with a negligible difference in sample quality, which is important for the practical deployment of these models. We additionally use precision and recall to compare how well DDPMs…
