Scalar-induced Gravitational Waves (SIGWs) represent a particular class of primordial signals which are sourced at second-order in perturbation theory whenever a scalar fluctuation of the metric is present. They form a guaranteed Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB) that, depending on the amplification of primordial scalar fluctuations, can be detected by GW detectors. The amplitude and the frequency shape of the scalar-induced SGWB can be influenced by the statistical properties of the scalar density perturbations. In this work we study the intuitive physics behind SIGWs and we analyze the imprints of local non-Gaussianity of the primordial curvature perturbation on the GW spectrum. We consider all the relevant non-Gaussian contributions up to fifth-order in the scalar seeds without any hierarchy, and we derive the related GW energy density $Ω_{\rm GW}(f)$. We perform a Fisher matrix analysis to understand to which accuracy non-Gaussianity can be constrained with the LISA detector, which will be sensitive in the milli-Hertz frequency band. We find that LISA, neglecting the impact of astrophysical foregrounds, will be able to measure the amplitude, the width and the peak of the spectrum with an accuracy up to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-4})$, while non-Gaussianity can be measured up to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-3})$. Finally, we discuss the implications of our non-Gaussianity expansion on the fraction of Primordial Black Holes.
Since the gravitational waves were detected by LIGO and Virgo, it has been promising that lots of information about the primordial Universe could be learned by further observations on stochastic gravitational waves background. The studies on gravitational waves induced by primordial curvature perturbations are of great interest. The aim of this paper is to investigate the third order induced gravitational waves. Based on the theory of cosmological perturbations, the first order scalar induces the second order scalar, vector and tensor perturbations. At the next iteration, the first order scala…
The energy density spectrum is an observable of gravitational waves. Divergence has appeared in the energy density spectra of the scalar induced gravitational waves for different gauge fixings. To resolve the discrepancy, we investigate the gauge invariance of the scalar induced gravitational waves. It is shown that the gauge invariant induced gravitational waves can be obtained by subtracting the fictitious tensor perturbations via introducing the counter term composed of the first order scalar perturbations. The kernel function uniquely determines the energy density spectrum of the scalar in…
The scalar tensor theory contains a coupling function connecting the quantities in the Jordan and Einstein frames, which is constrained to guarantee a transformation rule between frames. We simulate the supernovae core collapse with different choices of coupling functions defined over the viable region of the parameter space and find that a generic inverse-chirp feature of the gravitational waves in the scalar tensor scenario.
The Brans-Dicke theory of gravity is one of the oldest ideas to extend general relativity by introducing a non-minimal coupling between the scalar field and gravity. The Solar System tests put tight constraints on the theory. In order to evade these constraints, various screening mechanisms have been proposed. These screening mechanisms allow the scalar field to couple to matter as strongly as gravity in low density environments while suppressing it in the Solar System. The Vainshtein mechanism, which is found in various modified gravity models such as massive gravity, braneworld models and sc…
We study the scalar induced gravitational wave (GW) background in inflation with gravitationally enhanced friction (GEF). The GEF mechanism, which is realized by assuming a nonminimal derivative coupling between the inflaton field and gravity, is used to amplify the small-scale curvature perturbations to generate a sizable amount of primordial black holes. We find that the GW energy spectra can reach the detectable scopes of the future GW projects, and the power spectrum of curvature perturbations has a power-law form in the vicinity of the peak. The scaling of the GW spectrum in the ultraviol…
In dark-energy models where a scalar field is nonminimally coupled to the spacetime geometry, gravitational waves are expected to be supplemented with a scalar mode. Such scalar waves may interact with the standard tensor waves, thereby affecting their observed amplitude and polarization. Understanding the role of scalar waves is thus essential in order to design reliable gravitational-wave probes of dark energy and gravity beyond general relativity. In this article, we thoroughly investigate the propagation of scalar and tensor waves in the subset of Horndeski theories in which tensor waves p…
We demonstrate equivalence of the in-in formalism and Green's function method for calculating the bispectrum of primordial gravitational waves generated by vacuum fluctuations of the metric. The tree-level bispectrum from the field equation, $B_h$, agrees with the results obtained previously using the in-in formalism exactly. Characterising non-Gaussianity of the fluctuations using the ratio $B_h/P^2_h$ in the equilateral configuration, where $P_h$ is the power spectrum of scale-invariant gravitational waves, we show that it is much weaker than in models with spectator gauge fields. We also ca…
We consider thermal effects in the propagation of gravitational waves on a cosmological background. In particular, we consider scalar field cosmologies and study gravitational modes near cosmological singularities. We point out that the contribution of thermal radiation can heavily affect the dynamics of gravitational waves giving enhancement or dissipation effects both at quantum and classical level. These effects are considered both in General Relativity and in modified theories like $F(R)$ gravity which can be easily reduced to scalar-tensor cosmology. The possible detection and disentanglem…
We discuss the scalar mode of gravitational waves emerging in the context of $F(R)$ gravity by taking into account the chameleon mechanism. Assuming a toy model with a specific matter distribution to reproduce the environment of detection experiment by a ground-based gravitational wave observatory, we find that chameleon mechanism remarkably suppresses the scalar wave in the atmosphere of Earth, compared with the tensor modes of the gravitational waves. We also discuss the possibility to detect and constrain scalar waves by the current gravitational observatories and advocate a necessity of th…
We measure the scalar induced gravitational waves from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations and the gravitational wave observations. In the $Λ$CDM+$r$ model, we constrain the cosmological parameters within the evolution of the scalar induced gravitational waves by the additional scalar power spectrum. The two special cases called narrow power spectrum and wide power spectrum have influence on the cosmological parameters, especially the combinations of Planck18+BAO+BK15+LISA. We also compare these numerical results from four datasets within LIGO, LISA, IPTA and FAST projects, resp…
We derive the first quantum gravitational corrections to the inflationary power spectra for a general single-field scalar-tensor theory which includes a non-minimal coupling to gravity, a non-standard scalar kinetic term and an arbitrary potential of the scalar field. We obtain these corrections from a semiclassical expansion of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, which, in turn, governs the full quantum dynamics in the canonical approach to quantum gravity. We discuss the magnitude and relevance of these corrections, as well as their characteristic signature in the inflationary spectral observables.…
The scalar induced gravitational waves are produced from primordial curvature perturbations in the second order of perturbations. We constrain the fractional energy density of scalar induced gravitational waves from gravitational waves observations. If there is no detection of the scalar induced gravitational waves, the fractional energy density of scalar induced gravitational waves is constrained by some upper limits. Depends on these upper limits, we can obtain the constraints on the power spectrum of the primordial curvature perturbations. For a power-law scalar power spectrum, the constrai…
In this work we consider a combined theoretical framework comprised by $F(R)$ gravity and a kinetic scalar field. The kinetic energy of the scalar field dominates over its potential for all cosmic times, and the kinetic scalar potential is chosen to be small and non-trivial. In this case, we show that the primordial gravitational wave energy spectrum of vacuum $F(R)$ gravity is significantly enhanced and can be detectable in future interferometers. The kinetic scalar thus affects significantly the inflationary era, since it extends its duration, but also has an overall amplifying effect on the…
We explore possible non-Gaussian features of primordial gravitational waves by constructing model-independent templates for nonlinearity parameters of tensor bispectrum. Our analysis is based on Effective Field Theory of inflation that relies on no particular model as such and thus the results are quite generic. The analysis further reveals that chances of detecting squeezed limit tensor bispectrum are fairly higher than equilateral limit. We also discuss prospects of detectability in upcoming CMB missions.
It has been pointed out that matter bounce cosmology driven by a k-essence field cannot satisfy simultaneously the observational bounds on the tensor-to-scalar ratio and non-Gaussianity of the curvature perturbation. In this paper, we show that this is not the case in more general scalar-tensor theories. To do so, we evaluate the power spectra and the bispectra of scalar and tensor perturbations on a general contracting background in the Horndeski theory. We then discuss how one can discriminate contracting models from inflation based on non-Gaussian signatures of tensor perturbations.

The cosmological collider provides a model-independent probe of particle physics during inflation. We extend the study of cosmological collider physics to much smaller scales through gravitational wave (GW) probes. With a Chern-Simons interaction, a massive vector field can obtain a chemical potential and its particle production can cause significant non-Gaussian GW signals. We calculate the mass and spin dependences of the induced GW 3-point correlation function in the squeezed limit, and estimate its amplitude. Such signals may be detectable in the current and upcoming GW interferometer expe…
We study the gravitational field sourced by localized scalar fields (lumps) in higher-derivative theories of gravity. By working in a static and spherically symmetric configuration, we find the linearized spacetime metrics generated by scalar lumps for several Lagrangians: the vanishing potential, i.e. free massive scalar field, a polynomial potential, and the tachyon potential in open string field theory. We perform the analysis for different theories of gravity: Einstein's general relativity, four-derivative gravity, and ghost-free nonlocal gravity. We discuss the limit of validity of our an…
Stochastic gravitational waves can be induced from the primordial curvature perturbations generated during inflation, through scalar-tensor mode coupling at the second order of cosmological perturbation theory. Here we discuss a model of warm inflation in which large curvature perturbations are generated at the small scales because of inflaton dissipation. These overdense perturbations then collapse at later epoch to form primordial black holes, as was studied in our earlier work (Ref. \cite{Arya:2019wck}), and therefore may also act as a source to the second-order tensor perturbations. In thi…
We derive constraints on scalar field theories coupled to gravity by using recently developed positivity bounds in the presence of gravity. It is found that a canonically-normalized real scalar cannot have an arbitrarily flat potential unless some new physics enters well below the Planck scale. An upper bound on the scale of new physics is determined by loop corrections to the self-energy. Our result provides a swampland condition for scalar potentials.
We consider the renormalization in the pseudo-scalar inflation models with the gravitational Chern-Simons term. In this model, lepton asymmetry is generated from the chiral gravitational waves produced due to the Chern-Simons term through the gravitational chiral anomaly. However, it is known that the naive estimate of the expectation value of the gravitational Chern-Pontryagin density as well as the resultant lepton number density depend on the UV-cutoff scale, which raises a question on their validity. In this paper, we propose a way to renormalize the expectation value of the Chern-Pontryag…
We study the induced primordial gravitational waves (GW) coming from the effect of scalar perturbation on the tensor perturbation at the second order of cosmological perturbation theory. We use the evolution of the standard model degrees of freedom with respect to temperature in the early Universe to compute the induced gravitational waves bakcground. Our result shows that the spectrum of the induced GW is affected differently by the standard model degrees of freedom than the GW coming from first order tensor perturbation. This phenomenon is due to the presence of scalar perturbations as a sou…
In a subclass of Horndeski theories with the speed of gravity equivalent to that of light, we study gravitational radiation emitted during the inspiral phase of compact binary systems. We compute the waveform of scalar perturbations under a post-Newtonian expansion of energy-momentum tensors of point-like particles that depend on a scalar field. This scalar mode not only gives rise to breathing and longitudinal polarizations of gravitational waves, but it is also responsible for scalar gravitational radiation in addition to energy loss associated with transverse and traceless tensor polarizati…
We establish the possibility of Landau damping for gravitational scalar waves which propagate in a non-collisional gas of particles. In particular, under the hypothesis of homogeneity and isotropy, we describe the medium at the equilibrium with a Jüttner-Maxwell distribution, and we analytically determine the damping rate from the Vlasov equation. We find that damping occurs only if the phase velocity of the wave is subluminal throughout the propagation within the medium. Finally, we investigate relativistic media in cosmological settings by adopting numerical techniques.
