In protoplanetary disks, atomic carbon is expected to originate from the PDR at the disk surface where CO is dissociated by UV photons coming from the stellar, or external interstellar, radiation field. Even though atomic carbon has been detected in several protoplanetary disks, there is a lack of spatially resolved observations of it. For HD 163296 protoplanetary disk, we aim to obtain both radial and vertical structure of [CI]$={^3}{P_1} - {^3}{P_0}$ line emission and perform the first direct comparison of this tracer with optically thick line emission $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$. We used archival ALMA data for [CI]$={^3}{P_1} - {^3}{P_0}$ and previously published ${^{12}}$ CO $J=2-1$ data in HD 163296. Through the software of disksurf we extracted the vertical structure, meanwhile radial profiles were obtained directly from imaging. Brand new DALI modelling was employed to perform direct comparison to the data. We found that these tracers are collocated radially but not vertically, where $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ emission is, on average, located at higher altitudes, as it is also the case for other tracers in the same disk. Due to this difference in vertical height of the emission, the optically thick $^{12}$CO $J=2-1$ emission line appears to trace the highest altitudes, despite the expected formation mechanism of [CI] in the disk. The latter phenomena may be due to efficient mixing of the upper layers of the disk, or UV photons penetrating deeper than we expected.
Recent theoretical, numerical, and observational work have suggested that when a growing planet opens a gap in its disk the flow of gas into the gap is dominated by gas falling vertically from a height of at least one gas scale height. Our primary objective is to include, for the first time, the chemical impact that accreting gas above the midplane will have on the resulting C/O. We compute the accretion of gas onto planetary cores beginning at different disk radii and track the chemical composition of the gas and small icy grains to predict the resulting carbon-to-oxygen ratio (C/O) in their …
Observations have revealed that the elemental abundances of carbon and oxygen in the warm molecular layers of some protoplanetary disks are depleted compared to those is the interstellar medium by a factor of ~10-100. Meanwhile, little is known about nitrogen. To investigate the time evolution of nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen elemental abundances in disks, we develop a one-dimensional model that incorporates dust settling, turbulent diffusion of dust and ices, as well as gas-ice chemistry including the chemistry driven by stellar UV/X-rays and the galactic cosmic rays. We find that gaseous CO i…
Earth and other rocky objects in the inner Solar System are depleted in carbon compared to objects in the outer Solar System, the Sun, or the ISM. It is believed that this is a result of the selective removal of refractory carbon from primordial circumstellar material. In this work, we study the irreversible release of carbon into the gaseous environment via photolysis and pyrolysis of refractory carbonaceous material during the disk phase of the early Solar System. We analytically solve the one-dimensional advection equation and derive an explicit expression that describes the depletion of ca…
The vertical shear instability (VSI) is a robust phenomenon in irradiated protoplanetary disks (PPDs). The majority of previous numerical simulations have focused on the turbulent properties of its saturated state. However, the saturation of the VSI manifests as large-scale coherent radially travelling inertial waves. In this paper, we study inertial-wave-disk interactions and their impact on VSI saturation. Inertial-wave linear theory is developed and applied to a representative global 2D simulation using the Athena++ code. It is found that the VSI saturates by separating the disk into severa…
Under the right conditions, the streaming instability between imperfectly coupled dust and gas is a powerful mechanism for planetesimal formation as it can concentrate dust grains to the point of gravitational collapse. In its simplest form, the streaming instability can be captured by analyzing the linear stability of unstratified disk models, which represent the midplane of protoplanetary disks. We extend such studies by carrying out vertically-global linear stability analyses of dust layers in protoplanetary disks. We find the dominant form of instability in stratified dust layers is one dr…
The composition of planets may be largely determined by the chemical processing and accretion of icy pebbles in protoplanetary disks. Recent observations of protoplanetary disks hint at wide-spread depletion of gaseous carbon. The missing volatile carbon is likely frozen in CO and/or CO$_2$ ice on grains and locked into the disk through pebble trapping in pressure bumps or planetesimals. We present the results of the first successful ACA (Atacama Compact Array) [C I] $J$ = 1-0 mini-survey of seven protoplanetary disks. Using tailored azimuthally symmetric DALI (Dust And LInes) thermo-chemical …
The vertical shear instability (VSI) is a robust phenomenon in irradiated protoplanetary disks (PPDs). While there is extensive literature on the VSI in the hydrodynamic limit, PPDs are expected to be magnetized and their extremely low ionization fractions imply that non-ideal magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) effects should be properly considered. To this end, we present linear analyses of the VSI in magnetized disks with Ohmic resistivity. We primarily consider toroidal magnetic fields, which are likely to dominate the field geometry in PPDs. We perform vertically global and radially local analyses…
HD 169142 is part of the class of (pre-)transitional protoplanetary disks showing multiple carbon nanodust spectroscopic signatures (aromatic, aliphatic) dominating the infrared spectrum. Precise constraints on the spatial distribution and properties of carbonaceous dust particles are essential to understanding the physics of the disk. The HD 169142 disk is seen almost face-on and thus offers a unique opportunity to study the dust radial evolution. We investigate the spatial distribution and properties of the carriers of several dust aromatic emission features in the disk across a broad spatia…

The Vertical Shear Instability is an axisymmetric effect suggested to drive turbulence in the magnetically inactive zones of protoplanetary accretion disks. Here we examine its physical mechanism in analytically tractable ``minimal models" in three settings that include a uniform density fluid, a stratified atmosphere, and a shearing-box section of a protoplanetary disk. Each of these analyses show that the vertical shear instability's essence is similar to the slantwise convective symmetric instability in the mid-latitude Earth atmosphere, in the presence of vertical shear of the baroclinic j…
The streaming instability is a leading candidate mechanism to explain the formation of planetesimals. Yet, the role of this instability in the driving of turbulence in protoplanetary disks, given its fundamental nature as a linear hydrodynamical instability, has so far not been investigated in detail. We study the turbulence that is induced by the streaming instability as well as its interaction with the vertical shear instability. For this purpose, we employ the FLASH Code to conduct two-dimensional axisymmetric global disk simulations spanning radii from $1$ au to $100$ au, including the mut…
