Taking advantage of the anomalous Hall effect, we electrically probe low-frequency magnetization fluctuations at room temperature in a thin ferromagnetic Pt/Co/AlO$_x$ layer stack with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We observe a strong enhancement of the Hall voltage fluctuations within the hysteretic region of the magnetization loop. Analyzing both the temporal evolution of the anomalous Hall voltage and its frequency-dependent noise power density, we identify two types of magnetic noise: abrupt changes in the magnetic domain configuration, evident as Barkhausen-like steps in the Hall voltage time trace, yield a noise power density spectrum scaling with frequency as $1/f^β$ with $β\approx 1.9$. In contrast, quasi-stationary magnetization configurations are connected with a magnetic noise power density with an exponent $β\approx 0.9$. The observation of Barkausen steps and relaxation effects shows that the magnetic system is in a non-stationary state in the hysteresis region, such that the fluctuation-dissipation theorem cannot be expected to hold. However, the time-dependent change in the Hall voltage for constant magnetic field strength resembles the integrated noise power.
We utilize coherent femtosecond extreme ultraviolet (EUV) pulses derived from a free electron laser (FEL) to generate transient periodic magnetization patterns with periods as short as 44 nm. Combining spatially periodic excitation with resonant probing at the dichroic M-edge of cobalt allows us to create and probe transient gratings of electronic and magnetic excitations in a CoGd alloy. In a demagnetized sample, we observe an electronic excitation with 50 fs rise time close to the FEL pulse duration and ~0.5 ps decay time within the range for the electron-phonon relaxation in metals. When th…

When a flow of electron passes through a paramagnetic layer with strong spin-orbit-coupling such as platinum (Pt), a net spin current is produced via spin Hall effect (SHE). This spin current can exert a torque on the magnetization of an adjacent ferromagnetic layer which can be probed via magnetization dynamic response, e.g. spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance (ST-FMR). Nevertheless, that effect in lower frequency magnetization dynamic regime (MHz) where skin effect occurs in high permeability ferromagnetic conductors namely the magneto-impedance (MI) effect can be fundamentally important whi…
Coherent, self-sustained oscillation of magnetization in spin-torque oscillators (STOs) is a promising source for on-chip, nanoscale generation of microwave magnetic fields. Such fields could be used for local excitation of spin-wave resonances, control of spin qubits, and studies of paramagnetic resonance. However, local characterization of fields emitted by an STO has remained an outstanding challenge. Here, we use the spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond to probe the magnetic fields generated by an STO in a microbar of ferromagnetic insulator yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG). T…
Origin of the spin Seebeck effect probed by temperature dependent measurements in Gd$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$

Strongly out-of-equilibrium regimes in magnetic nanostructures exhibit novel properties, linked to the nonlinear nature of magnetization dynamics, which are of great fundamental and practical interest. Here, we demonstrate that field-driven ferromagnetic resonance can occur with substantial spatial coherency at unprecedented large angle of magnetization precessions, which is normally prevented by the onset of spin-wave instabilities and magnetization turbulent dynamics. Our results show that this limitation can be overcome in nanomagnets, where the geometric confinement drastically reduces the…
Noncollinear chiral spin textures in ferromagnetic multilayers are at the forefront of recent research in nano-magnetism with the promise for fast and energy-efficient devices. The recently demonstrated possibilities to stabilize such chiral structures in synthetic antiferromagnets (SAF) has raised interests as they are immune to dipolar field, hence favoring the stabilization of ultra small textures, improve mobility and avoid the transverse deflections of moving skyrmions limiting the efficiency in some foreseen applications. However, such systems with zero net magnetization are hence diffic…
Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ is an insulating skyrmion-host material with a magnetoelectric coupling giving rise to an electric polarization with a characteristic dependence on the magnetic field $\vec H$. We report magnetic force microscopy imaging of the helical real-space spin structure on the surface of a bulk single crystal of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. In the presence of a magnetic field, the helimagnetic order in general reorients and acquires a homogeneous component of the magnetization, resulting in a conical arrangement at larger fields. We investigate this reorientation process at a temperature of 10~K for …
Laser induced modulation of the magnetization dynamics occurring over various time-scales have been unified here for a Ni80Fe20 thin film excited by amplified femtosecond laser pulses. The weak correlation between demagnetization time and pump fluence with substantial enhancement in remagnetization time is demonstrated using three-temperature model considering the temperatures of electron, spin and lattice. The picosecond magnetization dynamics is modeled using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. With increasing pump fluence the Gilbert damping parameter shows significant enhancement from it…
