In quantum multiparameter estimation, multiple to-be-estimated parameters are encoded in a quantum dynamics system by a unitary evolution. As the parameters vary, the system may undergo a topological phase transition (TPT). In this paper, we investigate two SU(2) TPT models and propose the singular behavior of the quantum metric tensor around the TPT point as a tool for the simultaneous optimal estimation of multiple parameters. We find that the proposed TPT sensing protocol can achieve the same metrology performance as the quantum-control-enhanced one. Moreover, the probe state of the TPT sensing protocol is only the ground state of the Hamiltonian rather than the entangled state required in the control-enhanced one. In addition, an adaptive multiparameter estimation strategy is developed for updating the estimated values until the desired quantum Cramér-Rao bound is approached. Our work reinforces the connection between quantum multiparameter estimation and topology physics, with potential inspiration for quantum critical metrology.
Most studies in multiparameter estimation assume the dynamics is fixed and focus on identifying the optimal probe state and the optimal measurements. In practice, however, controls are usually available to alter the dynamics, which provides another degree of freedom. In this paper we employ optimal control methods, particularly the gradient ascent pulse engineering (GRAPE), to design optimal controls for the improvement of the precision limit in multiparameter estimation. We show that the controlled schemes not only capable to provide a higher precision limit, but also have a higher stability …

Quantum metrology is the state-of-the-art measurement technology. It uses quantum resources to enhance the sensitivity of phase estimation beyond what reachable within classical physics. While single parameter estimation theory has been widely investigated, much less is known about the simultaneous estimation of multiple phases, which finds key applications in imaging and sensing. In this manuscript we provide conditions of useful entanglement (among multimode particles, qudits) for multiphase estimation and adapt them to multiarm Mach-Zehnder interferometry. We discuss benchmark multimode Foc…
Squeezing currently represents the leading strategy for quantum enhanced precision measurements of a single parameter in a variety of continuous- and discrete-variable settings and technological applications. However, many important physical problems including imaging and field sensing require the simultaneous measurement of multiple unknown parameters. The development of multiparameter quantum metrology is yet hindered by the intrinsic difficulty in finding saturable sensitivity bounds and feasible estimation strategies. Here, we derive the general operational concept of multiparameter squeez…
We show that a significant quantum gain corresponding to squeezed or over-squeezed spin states can be obtained in multiparameter estimation by measuring the Hadamard coefficients of a 1D or 2D signal. The physical platform we consider consists of twolevel atoms in an optical lattice in a squeezed-Mott configuration, or more generally by correlated spins distributed in spatially separated modes. Our protocol requires the possibility to locally flip the spins, but relies on collective measurements. We give examples of applications to scalar or vector field mapping and compressed sensing.
Generative adversarial learning is currently one of the most prolific fields in artificial intelligence due to its great performance in a variety of challenging tasks such as photorealistic image and video generation. While a quantum version of generative adversarial learning has emerged that promises exponential advantages over its classical counterpart, its experimental implementation and potential applications with accessible quantum technologies remain explored little. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of quantum generative adversarial learning with the assistance of adaptive f…
Quantum metrology aims to exploit quantum phenomena to overcome classical limitations in the estimation of relevant parameters. We consider a probe undergoing a phase shift $φ$ whose generator is randomly sampled according to a distribution with unknown concentration $κ$, which introduces a physical source of noise. We then investigate strategies for the joint estimation of the two parameters $φ$ and $κ$ given a finite number $N$ of interactions with the phase imprinting channel. We consider both single qubit and multipartite entangled probes, and identify regions of the parameters where simul…
In a ubiquitous $SU(2)$ dynamics, achieving the simultaneous optimal estimation of multiple parameters is significant but difficult. Using quantum control to optimize this $SU(2)$ coding unitary evolution is one of solutions. We propose a method, characterized by the nested cross-products of the coefficient vector $\mathbf{X}$ of $SU(2)$ generators and its partial derivative $\partial_\ell \mathbf{X}$, to investigate the control-enhanced quantum multiparameter estimation. Our work reveals that quantum control is not always functional in improving the estimation precision, which depends on the …
Multiparameter estimation is a general problem that aims at measuring unknown physical quantities, obtaining high precision in the process. In this context, the adoption of quantum resources promises a substantial boost in the achievable performances with respect to the classical case. However, several open problems remain to be addressed in the multiparameter scenario. A crucial requirement is the identification of suitable platforms to develop and experimentally test novel efficient methodologies that can be employed in this general framework. We report the experimental implementation of a r…

The following article is an application of commutative algebra to the study of multiparameter persistent homology in topological data analysis. In particular, the theory of finite free resolutions of modules over polynomial rings is applied to multiparameter persistent modules. The generic structure of such resolutions and the classifying spaces involved are studied using results spanning several decades of research in commutative algebra, beginning with the study of generic structural properties of free resolutions popularized by Buchsbaum and Eisenbud. Many explicit computations are presente…

We study super-resolution imaging theoretically using a distant n-mode interferometer in the microwave regime for passive remote sensing, used e.g., for satellites like the "soil moisture and ocean salinity (SMOS)" mission to observe the surface of the Earth. We give a complete quantum mechanical analysis of multiparameter estimation of the temperatures on the source plane. We find the optimal detection modes by combining incoming modes with an optimized unitary that enables the most informative measurement based on photon counting in the detection modes and saturates the quantum Cramér-Rao bo…
Measuring the spectral properties of an optical frequency comb is among the most fundamental tasks of precision metrology. In contrast to general single-parameter measurement schemes, we demonstrate here single shot multiparameter estimation at and beyond the standard quantum limit. The mean energy and the central frequency of ultrafast pulses are simultaneously determined with a multi-pixel-spectrally-resolved (MPSR) apparatus, without changing the photonics architecture. Moreover, using a quantum frequency comb that consists of multiple squeezed states in a family of Hermite-Gaussian spectra…
We theoretically study the angular displacements estimation based on a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), in which two optical parametric amplifiers (PAs) are introduced into two arms of the standard MZI, respectively. The employment of PAs can both squeeze the shot noise and amplify the photon number inside the interferometer. When the unknown angular displacements are introduced to both arms, we derive the multiparameter quantum Cramér-Rao bound (QCRB) using the quantum Fisher information matrix approach, and the bound of angular displacements difference between the two arms is comp…
Quantum photonics has demonstrated its potential for enhanced sensing. Current sources of quantum light states tailored to measuring, allow to monitor phenomena evolving on time scales of the order of the second. These are characteristic of product accumulation in chemical reactions of technologically interest, in particular those involving chiral compounds. Here we adopt a quantum multiparameter approach to investigate the dynamic process of sucrose acid hydrolysis as a test bed for such applications. The estimation is made robust by monitoring different parameters at once.

A quantum theory of multiphase estimation is crucial for quantum-enhanced sensing and imaging and may link quantum metrology to more complex quantum computation and communication protocols. In this letter we tackle one of the key difficulties of multiphase estimation: obtaining a measurement which saturates the fundamental sensitivity bounds. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions for projective measurements acting on pure states to saturate the maximal theoretical bound on precision given by the quantum Fisher information matrix. We apply our theory to the specific example of interfero…

Phase estimation protocols provide a fundamental benchmark for the field of quantum metrology. The latter represents one of the most relevant applications of quantum theory, potentially enabling the capability of measuring unknown physical parameters with improved precision over classical strategies. Within this context, most theoretical and experimental studies have focused on determining the fundamental bounds and how to achieve them in the asymptotic regime where a large number of resources is employed. However, in most applications it is necessary to achieve optimal precisions by performin…
There is a growing interest in using cold-atom systems to explore the effects of strong interactions in topological band structures. Here we investigate interacting bosons in a Cruetz ladder, which is characterised by topological flat energy bands where it has been proposed that interactions can lead to the formation of bound atomic pairs giving rise to pair superfluidity. By investigating realistic experimental implementations, we understand how the lattice topology enhances the properties of bound pairs giving rise to relatively large effective pair-tunnelling in these systems which can lead…
We devise a cold-atom approach to realizing a broad range of bi-linear quantum magnets. Our scheme is based on off-resonant single-photon excitation of Rydberg $P$-states (Rydberg-dressing), whose strong interactions are shown to yield controllable XYZ-interactions between effective spins, represented by different atomic ground states. The distinctive features of Förster-resonant Rydberg atom interactions are exploited to enhance the effectiveness of Rydberg-dressing and, thereby, yield large spin-interactions that greatly exceed corresponding decoherence rates. We illustrate the concept on a …
We study the phase diagram and edge states of a two-dimensional p-wave superconductor with long-range hopping and pairing amplitudes. New topological phases and quasiparticles different from the usual short-range model are obtained. When both hopping and pairing terms decay with the same exponent, one of the topological chiral phases with propagating Majorana edge states gets significantly enhanced by long-range couplings. On the other hand, when the long-range pairing amplitude decays more slowly than the hopping, we discover new topological phases where propagating Majorana fermions at each …
Topological matter and topological optics have been studied in many systems, with promising applications in materials science and photonics technology. These advances motivate the study of the interaction between topological matter and light, as well as topological protection in light-matter interactions. In this work, we study a waveguide-interfaced topological atom array. The light-matter interaction is nontrivially modified by topology, yielding novel optical phenomena. We find topology-enhanced photon absorption from the waveguide for large Purcell factor, i.e., $Γ/Γ_0\gg 1$, where $Γ$ and…
