We introduce the concept of chiral geometric operators and use Gilkey's invariance theory to prove the local index theorem for these operators. In other words, we demonstrate that the supertrace of the heat kernel of a given geometric operator converges as time approaches zero and that this limit is the Chern-Weil form of the Atiyah-Singer integrand. In addition to classical Dirac-type operators that appear in geometry, chiral geometric operators include all higher Dirac operators. This includes in particular the Rarita-Schwinger operator. We also construct a new class of such operators on four-manifolds called higher signature operators.
In this note we study the analytical index of pseudo-differential operators by using the notion of (infinite dimensional) operator-valued symbols (in the sense of Ruzhansky and Turunen). Our main tools will be the McKean-Singer index formula together with the operator-valued functional calculus developed here.
We define the Simons-Sullivan differential analytic index by translating the Freed-Lott differential analytic index via explicit ring isomorphisms between Freed-Lott differential K-theory and Simons-Sullivan differential K-theory. We prove the differential Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem in Simons-Sullivan differential K-theory using a theorem of Bismut.
We study Cheeger-Simons differential characters and provide geometric descriptions of the ring structure and of the fiber integration map. The uniqueness of differential cohomology (up to unique natural transformation) is proved by deriving an explicit formula for any natural transformation between a differential cohomology theory and the model given by differential characters. Fiber integration for fibers with boundary is treated in the context of relative differential characters. As applications we treat higher-dimensional holonomy, parallel transport, and transgression.
We compute the differential geometric invariants of cuspidal edges on flat surfaces in hyperbolic $3$-space and in de Sitter space. Several dualities of invariants are pointed out.
This paper treats the theory of Mukai duality on K3 surfaces from the differential geometric perspective, taylored to the need of the author's companion paper about Mukai duality of adiabatic coassociative K3 fibrations.
Extending ideas of Atiyah--Bott--Shapiro and Quillen, we construct a model for differential $\rm KO$-theory whose cocycles are families of Clifford modules with superconnection. The model is built to accommodate an analytic pushforward for bundles of spin manifolds, affording a differential refinement of Atiyah and Singer's families index.
The Poincare function is a compact form of counting moduli in local geometric problems. We discuss its property in relation to V.Arnold's conjecture, and derive this conjecture in the case when the pseudogroup acts algebraically and transitively on the base. Then we survey the known counting results for differential invariants and derive new formulae for several other classification problems in geometry and analysis.
In this paper we study the existence of a first zero and the oscillatory behavior of solutions of the ordinary differential equation $(vz')'+Avz = 0$, where $A,v$ are functions arising from geometry. In particular, we introduce a new technique to estimate the distance between two consecutive zeros. These results are applied in the setting of complete Riemannian manifolds: in particular, we prove index bounds for certain Schrödinger operators, and an estimate of the growth of the spectral radius of the Laplacian outside compact sets when the volume growth is faster than exponential. Application…
The notion of pseudo-differential operators with coefficients in a continuous trace algebra over a manifold are introduced and their index theory is studied. The algebra of principal symbols in this calculus provides an abstract Poincaré dual to the continuous trace algebra. Index formulas for pseudo-differential operators twisted by a bundle on the opposite continuous trace algebra are obtained in terms of an Atiyah-Singer type index formula describing the twisted index pairing as index theory for elliptic operators.
We revisit the cohomological index theorem for elliptic elements in the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie groupoid previously proved by the authors. We prove a Thom isomorphism for Lie algebroids which enables us to rewrite the "topological side" of the index theorem. This results in index formulae for Lie groupoid analogues of the familiar geometric operators on manifolds such as the signature and Dirac operator expressed in terms of the usual characteristic classes in Lie algebroid cohomology.
Since the discovery of differential calculus by Newton and Leibniz and the subsequent continuous growth of its applications to physics, mechanics, geometry, etc, it was observed that partial derivatives in the study of various natural problems are (self-)organized in certain structures usually called geometric. Tensors, connections, jets, etc, are commonly known examples of them. This list of classical geometrical structures is sporadically and continuously widening. For instance, Lie algebroids and BV-bracket are popular recent additions into it. Our goal is to show that the "zoo" of all geom…
We study the interplay between geometry and partial differential equations. We show how the fundamental ideas we use require the ability to correctly calculate the dimensions of spaces associated to the varieties of zeros of the symbols of those differential equations. This brings to the center of the analysis several classical results from algebraic geometry, including the Cayley-Bacharach theorem and some of its variants as Serret's theorem, and the Brill-Noether Restsatz theorem.
The symmetric product of vector fields on a manifold arises when one studies the controllability of certain classes of mechanical control systems. A geometric description of the symmetric product is provided using parallel transport, along the lines of the flow interpretation of the Lie bracket. This geometric interpretation of the symmetric product is used to provide an intrinsic proof of the fact that the distributions closed under the symmetric product are exactly those distributions invariant under the geodesic flow.
We give an index formula for the class of all *-maximally hypoelliptic differential operators on any closed manifold with vector bundle coefficients, generalising previous index formulas by Atiyah-Singer and van Erp. Using this formula, we give new explicit index computations for Hormander's sum of squares operators of arbitrary rank.
We define a geometric invariant and an index (+1 or -1) for projective umbilics of smooth surfaces. We prove that the sum of the indices of the projective umbilics inside a connected component H of the hyperbolic domain remains constant in any 1-parameter family of surfaces if the topological type of H does not change. We prove the same statement for any connected component E of the elliptic domain. We give formulas for the invariant and for the index which do not depend on any normal form.
In this thesis, we study singular pseudo-differential operators defined by groupoids satisfying the Lauter-Nistor condition, by a method parallel to that of manifolds with boundary and edge differential operators. The example of the Bruhat sphere is studied in detail. In particular, we construct an extension to the calculus of uniformly supported pseudo-differential operators that is analogous to the calculus with bounds defined on manifolds with boundary. We derive a Fredholmness criterion for operators on the Bruhat sphere, and prove that their parametrices up to compact operators lie inside…
Let X --> B be a proper submersion with a Riemannian structure. Given a differential K-theory class on X, we define its analytic and topological indices as differential K-theory classes on B. We prove that the two indices are the same.

In this note, we prove an index theorem on Galois covering for Heisenberg elliptic differential operators, which is not elliptic, analogous to Atiyah's $Γ$-index theorem. This note also contains an example of Heisenberg differential operators with non-trivial $Γ$-index.
We discuss the essential spectrum of essentially self-adjoint elliptic differential operators of first order and of Laplace type operators on Riemannian vector bundles over geometrically finite orbifolds.
This note contains a reformulation of the Hodge index theorem within the framework of Atiyah's $L^2$-index theory. More precisely, given a compact Kähler manifold $(M,h)$ of even complex dimension $2m$, we prove that $$σ(M)=\sum_{p,q=0}^{2m}(-1)^ph_{(2),Γ}^{p,q}(M)$$ where $σ(M)$ is the signature of $M$ and $h_{(2),Γ}^{p,q}(M)$ are the $L^2$-Hodge numbers of $M$ with respect to a Galois covering having $Γ$ as group of Deck transformations. Likewise we also prove an $L^2$-version of the Frölicher index theorem. Afterwards we give some applications of these two theorems and finally we conclude t…
We derive a sufficient condition on a bounded pseudoconvex domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{C}^2$ with smooth boundary such that $-(-ρ)^η$ is plurisubharmonic on $Ω$ for $η>0$ arbitrarily close to $1$ (the supremum of $η$ is called Diederich-Fornæss index, see Definition (df)). This condition (see Theorem prop) extends a theorem of Fornæss and Herbig in 2007 and only requires restriction on Levi-flat sets of the boundary $\partialΩ$. Since the condition is on Levi-flat sets, it contains more geometric information. As an application of this new condition, we discuss how the geometry of the Levi-flat set…
We study bounded pseudoconvex domains in complex Euclidean spaces. We find analytical necessary conditions and geometric sufficient conditions for a domain being of trivial Diederich--Fornæss index (i.e. the index equals to 1). We also connect a differential equation to the index. This reveals how a topological condition affects the solution of the associated differential equation and consequently obstructs the index being trivial. The proofs relies on a new method of study of the complex geometry of the boundary. The method was motivated by geometric analysis of Riemannian manifolds. We also …
In this note we prove some results in flat and differential $K$-theory. The first one is a proof of the compatibility of the differential topological index and the flat topological index by a direct computation. The second one is the explicit isomorphisms between Bunke-Schick differential $K$-theory and Freed-Lott differential $K$-theory.
We apply the equivariance --> families principle to a geometric family of Clifford module bundles with an action of a compact Lie group G to prove an equivariant version of Bismut's families index theorem on the differential Borel quotient of the geometric family.
Gaussian processes can be treated as subsets of a standard Hilbert space, however, the volume size relation between the underlying index space of random processes and its convex hull is not clear. The understanding of such volume size relations can help us to establish a majorizing measure theorem geometrically. In this paper, we assume that the underlying index space of random processes is a simply connected manifold with sectional curvature less than negative one (Hadamard manifold). We derive the upper bound for the ratio between the volume of the underlying index space and the volume of it…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a super tangent bundle of a manifold, and extend the basic notions of differential geometry such as differential forms, exterior derivation, connection, metric and divergence on manifolds that equipped with a super tangent bundle.
Some model reduction techniques for multiple time-scale dynamical systems make use of the identification of low dimensional slow invariant attracting manifolds (SIAM) in order to reduce the dimensionality of the phase space by restriction to the slow flow. The focus of this work is on a proposition and discussion of a general viewpoint using differential geometric concepts for submanifolds to deal with slow invariant manifolds in an extended phase space. The motivation is a coordinate independent formulation of the manifold properties and its characterization problem treating the manifold as i…
We show that the exponential map of the Bochner connection on the restricted holomorphic tangent bundle of a complex manifold admitting the positive-definite Bergman metric coincides with the inverse of Bergman's representative map. We also present a generalization of the Lu theorem, as an application.
Motivated by Demailly's strategy towards the Kobayashi hyperbolicity conjecture, we study the action on the k-jets of germs of holomorphic discs in a complex manifold X of the reparametrization group of k-jets of germs of biholomorphisms of the source. This reparametrization group is a subgroup of the general linear group GL(k) which is not reductive, but nonetheless we show that its invariants for any linear action which extends to GL(k) form a finitely generated algebra, and give a new geometric description of the Demailly-Semple algebra of invariant jet differentials.
We give a direct proof that the Freed-Lott differential analytic index is well defined and a condensed proof of the differential Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem. As a byproduct we also obtain a direct proof that the R/Z analytic index is well defined and a condensed proof of the R/Z Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem.
We investigate the problem of the stability of the number of conjugate or focal points (counted with multiplicity) along a semi-Riemannian geodesic $γ$. For a Riemannian or a non spacelike Lorentzian geodesic, such number is equal to the intersection number (Maslov index) of a continuous curve with a subvariety of codimension one of the Lagrangian Grassmannian of a symplectic space. Such intersection number is proven to be stable in a large variety of circumstances. In the general semi-Riemannian case, under suitable hypotheses this number is equal to an algebraic count of the multiplicities o…
We provide a draft of a theory of geometric integration of rough differential forms which are generalizations of classical (smooth) differential forms to similar objects with very low regularity, for instance, involving Hölder continuous functions that may be nowhere differentiable. Borrowing ideas from the theory of rough paths, we show that such a geometric integration can be constructed substituting appropriately differentials with more general asymptotic expansions. This can be seen as the basis of geometric integration similar to that used in geometric measure theory, but without any unde…
This is the first in a series of papers constructing geometric models of twisted differential K-theory. In this paper we construct a model of even twisted differential K-theory when the underlying topological twist represents a torsion class. By differential twists we will mean smooth U(1)-gerbes with connection, and we use twisted vector bundles with connection as cocycles. The model we construct satisfies the axioms of Kahle and Valentino, including functoriality, naturality of twists, and the hexagon diagram. This paper confirms a long-standing hypothetical idea that twisted vector bundles …
This is an elementary introduction to exterior differential systems motivated by two examples: minimal submanifolds and the isometric embedding problem. The two main goals of the lectures are: 1. To explain how to find an appropriate geometric setting for studying a given system of pde. 2. To explain the Cartan algorithm to determine the moduli space of local solutions to any given exterior differential system and an appropriate initial value problem for the system.
We first introduce an invariant index for G-equivariant elliptic differential operators on a locally compact manifold M admitting a proper cocompact action of a locally compact group G. It generalizes the Kawasaki index for orbifolds to the case of proper cocompact actions. Our invariant index is used to show that an analog of the Guillemin-Sternberg geometric quantization conjecture holds if M is symplectic with a Hamiltonian action of G that is proper and cocompact. This essentially solves a conjecture of Hochs and Landsman.
A geometrical formulation of estimation theory for finite-dimensional $C^{\star}$-algebras is presented. This formulation allows to deal with the classical and quantum case in a single, unifying mathematical framework. The derivation of the Cramer-Rao and Helstrom bounds for parametric statistical models with discrete and finite outcome spaces is presented.
