A graph $G$ is said to be Ramsey for a tuple of graphs $(H_1,\dots,H_r)$ if every $r$-coloring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H_i$ in color $i$, for some $i$. A fundamental question at the intersection of Ramsey theory and the theory of random graphs is to determine the threshold at which the binomial random graph $G_{n,p}$ becomes a.a.s. Ramsey for a fixed tuple $(H_1,\dots,H_r)$, and a famous conjecture of Kohayakawa and Kreuter predicts this threshold. Earlier work of Mousset-Nenadov-Samotij, Bowtell-Hancock-Hyde, and Kuperwasser-Samotij-Wigderson has reduced this probabilistic problem to a deterministic graph decomposition conjecture. In this paper, we resolve this deterministic problem, thus proving the Kohayakawa-Kreuter conjecture. Along the way, we prove a number of novel graph decomposition results which may be of independent interest.
For fixed graphs $F_1,\dotsc,F_r$, we prove an upper bound on the threshold function for the property that $G(n,p) \to (F_1,\dotsc,F_r)$. This establishes the $1$-statement of a conjecture of Kohayakawa and Kreuter.
In this paper, we study asymmetric Ramsey properties of the random graph $G_{n,p}$. Let $r \in \mathbb{N}$ and $H_1, \ldots, H_r$ be graphs. We write $G_{n,p} \to (H_1, \ldots, H_r)$ to denote the property that whenever we colour the edges of $G_{n,p}$ with colours from the set $[r] := \{1, \ldots, r\}$ there exists $i \in [r]$ and a copy of $H_i$ in $G_{n,p}$ monochromatic in colour $i$. There has been much interest in determining the asymptotic threshold function for this property. Rödl and Ruciński determined the threshold function for the general symmetric case; that is, when $H_1 = \cdots…
We say that $G \to (F,H)$ if, in every edge colouring $c: E(G) \to \{1,2\}$, we can find either a $1$-coloured copy of $F$ or a $2$-coloured copy of $H$. The well-known Kohayakawa--Kreuter conjecture states that the threshold for the property $G(n,p) \to (F,H)$ is equal to $n^{-1/m_{2}(F,H)}$, where $m_{2}(F,H)$ is given by \[ m_{2}(F,H):= \max \left\{\dfrac{e(J)}{v(J)-2+1/m_2(H)} : J \subseteq F, e(J)\ge 1 \right\}. \] In this paper, we show the $0$-statement of the Kohayakawa--Kreuter conjecture for every pair of cycles and cliques.
A classical result by Rado characterises the so-called partition-regular matrices $A$, i.e.\ those matrices $A$ for which any finite colouring of the positive integers yields a monochromatic solution to the equation $Ax=0$. We study the {\sl asymmetric} random Rado problem for the (binomial) random set $[n]_p$ in which one seeks to determine the threshold for the property that any $r$-colouring, $r \geq 2$, of the random set has a colour $i \in [r]$ admitting a solution for the matrical equation $A_i x = 0$, where $A_1,\ldots,A_r$ are predetermined partition-regular matrices pre-assigned to th…
The KŁR conjecture of Kohayakawa, Łuczak, and Rödl is a statement that allows one to prove that asymptotically almost surely all subgraphs of the random graph G_{n,p}, for sufficiently large p : = p(n), satisfy an embedding lemma which complements the sparse regularity lemma of Kohayakawa and Rödl. We prove a variant of this conjecture which is sufficient for most known applications to random graphs. In particular, our result implies a number of recent probabilistic versions, due to Conlon, Gowers, and Schacht, of classical extremal combinatorial theorems. We also discuss several further appli…
A celebrated result of Rödl and Ruciński states that for every graph $F$, which is not a forest of stars and paths of length $3$, and fixed number of colours $r\ge 2$ there exist positive constants $c, C$ such that for $p \leq cn^{-1/m_2(F)}$ the probability that every colouring of the edges of the random graph $G(n,p)$ contains a monochromatic copy of $F$ is $o(1)$ (the "0-statement"), while for $p \geq Cn^{-1/m_2(F)}$ it is $1-o(1)$ (the "1-statement"). Here $m_2(F)$ denotes the $2$-density of $F$. On the other hand, the case where $F$ is a forest of stars has a coarse threshold which is det…
A well-known result by Haxell and Kohayakawa states that the vertices of an $r$-coloured complete graph can be partitioned into $r$ monochromatic connected subgraphs of distinct colours; this is a slightly weaker variant of a conjecture by Erdős, Pyber and Gyárfás that states that there exists a partition into $r-1$ monochromatic connected subgraphs. We consider a variant of this problem, where the complete graph is replaced by a graph with large minimum degree, and prove two conjectures of Bal and DeBiasio, for two and three colours.
Many important problems in combinatorics and other related areas can be phrased in the language of independent sets in hypergraphs. Recently Balogh, Morris and Samotij, and independently Saxton and Thomason developed very general container theorems for independent sets in hypergraphs; both of which have seen numerous applications to a wide range of problems. In this paper we use the container method to give relatively short and elementary proofs of a number of results concerning Ramsey (and Turán) properties of (hyper)graphs and the integers. In particular: (i) We generalise the random Ramsey …
The Kohayakawa-Nagle-Rödl-Schacht conjecture roughly states that every sufficiently large locally $d$-dense graph $G$ on $n$ vertices must contain at least $(1-o(1))d^{|E(H)|}n^{|V(H)|}$ copies of a fixed graph $H$. Despite its important connections to both quasirandomness and Ramsey theory, there are very few examples known to satisfy the conjecture. We provide various new classes of graphs that satisfy the conjecture. Firstly, we prove that adding an edge to a cycle or a tree produces graphs that satisfy the conjecture. Secondly, we prove that a class of graphs obtained by gluing complete mu…
We study thresholds for extremal properties of random discrete structures. We determine the threshold for Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progressions in random subsets of the integers and its multidimensional extensions and we determine the threshold for Turán-type problems for random graphs and hypergraphs. In particular, we verify a conjecture of Kohayakawa, Łuczak, and Rödl for Turán-type problems in random graphs. Similar results were obtained by Conlon and Gowers.
Erdős, Gyárfás, and Pyber (1991) conjectured that every $r$-colored complete graph can be partitioned into at most $r-1$ monochromatic components; this is a strengthening of a conjecture of Lovász (1975) in which the components are only required to form a cover. An important partial result of Haxell and Kohayakawa (1995) shows that a partition into $r$ monochromatic components is possible for sufficiently large $r$-colored complete graphs. We start by extending Haxell and Kohayakawa's result to graphs with large minimum degree, then we provide some partial analogs of their result for random gr…
Given two graphs $G$ and $H$, we investigate for which functions $p=p(n)$ the random graph $G_{n,p}$ (the binomial random graph on $n$ vertices with edge probability $p$) satisfies with probability $1-o(1)$ that every red-blue-coloring of its edges contains a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. We prove a general upper bound on the threshold for this property under the assumption that the denser of the two graphs satisfies a certain balancedness condition. Our result partially confirms a conjecture by the first author and Kreuter, and together with earlier lower bound results establishes th…
We count orientations of $G(n,p)$ avoiding certain classes of oriented graphs. In particular, we study $T_r(n,p)$, the number of orientations of the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ in which every copy of $K_r$ is transitive, and $S_r(n,p)$, the number of orientations of $G(n,p)$ containing no strongly connected copy of $K_r$. We give the correct order of growth of $\log T_r(n,p)$ and $\log S_r(n,p)$ up to polylogarithmic factors; for orientations with no cyclic triangle, this significantly improves a result of Allen, Kohayakawa, Mota and Parente. We also discuss the problem for a single forbidd…
A graph $G$ is said to have \textit{bandwidth} at most $b$, if there exists a labeling of the vertices by $1,2,..., n$, so that $|i - j| \leq b$ whenever $\{i,j\}$ is an edge of $G$. Recently, Böttcher, Schacht, and Taraz verified a conjecture of Bollobás and Komlós which says that for every positive $r,Δ,γ$, there exists $β$ such that if $H$ is an $n$-vertex $r$-chromatic graph with maximum degree at most $Δ$ which has bandwidth at most $βn$, then any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $(1 - 1/r + γ)n$ contains a copy of $H$ for large enough $n$. In this paper, we extend t…
We study two classical problems in graph Ramsey theory, that of determining the Ramsey number of bounded-degree graphs and that of estimating the induced Ramsey number for a graph with a given number of vertices. The Ramsey number r(H) of a graph H is the least positive integer N such that every two-coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_N$ contains a monochromatic copy of H. A famous result of Chvátal, Rödl, Szemerédi and Trotter states that there exists a constant c(Δ) such that r(H) \leq c(Δ) n for every graph H with n vertices and maximum degree Δ. The important open question is to…
Settling a first case of a conjecture of M. Kahle on the homology of the clique complex of the random graph $G=G_{n,p}$, we show, roughly speaking, that (with high probability) the triangles of $G$ span its cycle space whenever each of its edges lies in a triangle (which happens (w.h.p.) when $p$ is at least about $\sqrt{(3/2)\ln n/n}$, and not below this unless $p$ is very small.) We give two related proofs of this statement, together with a relatively simple proof of a fundamental "stability" theorem for triangle-free subgraphs of $G_{n,p}$, originally due to Kohayakawa, Łuczak and Rödl, tha…
This paper is motivated by the question of how global and dense restriction sets in results from extremal combinatorics can be replaced by less global and sparser ones. The result we consider here as an example is Turan's theorem, which deals with graphs G=([n],E) such that no member of the restriction set consisting of all r-tuples on [n] induces a copy of K_r. Firstly, we examine what happens when this restriction set is replaced just by all r-tuples touching a given m-element set. That is, we determine the maximal number of edges in an n-vertex such that no K_r hits a given vertex set. Seco…
Given an $r$-edge-coloured complete graph $K_n$, how many monochromatic connected components does one need in order to cover its vertex set? This natural question is a well-known essentially equivalent formulation of the classical Ryser's conjecture which, despite a lot of attention over the last 50 years, still remains open. A number of recent papers consider a sparse random analogue of this question, asking for the minimum number of monochromatic components needed to cover the vertex set of an $r$-edge-coloured random graph $\mathcal{G}(n,p)$. Recently, Bucić, Korándi and Sudakov established…
Many important theorems in combinatorics, such as Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progressions and the Erdős-Stone Theorem in extremal graph theory, can be phrased as statements about independent sets in uniform hypergraphs. In recent years, an important trend in the area has been to extend such classical results to the so-called sparse random setting. This line of research culminated recently in the breakthroughs of Conlon and Gowers and of Schacht, who developed general tools for solving problems of this type. In this paper, we provide a third, completely different approach to proving extr…
