Recently, simplicial complexes are used in constructions of several infinite families of minimal and optimal linear codes by Hyun {\em et al.} Building upon their research, in this paper more linear codes over the ring $\mathbb{Z}_4$ are constructed by simplicial complexes. Specifically, the Lee weight distributions of the resulting quaternary codes are determined and two infinite families of four-Lee-weight quaternary codes are obtained. Compared to the databases of $\mathbb Z_4$ codes by Aydin {\em et al.}, at least nine new quaternary codes are found. Thanks to the special structure of the defining sets, we have the ability to determine whether the Gray images of certain obtained quaternary codes are linear or not. This allows us to obtain two infinite families of binary nonlinear codes and one infinite family of binary minimal linear codes. Furthermore, utilizing these minimal binary codes, some secret sharing schemes as a byproduct also are established.
In this paper, we mainly study quaternary linear codes and their binary subfield codes. First we obtain a general explicit relationship between quaternary linear codes and their binary subfield codes in terms of generator matrices and defining sets. Second, we construct quaternary linear codes via simplicial complexes and determine the weight distributions of these codes. Third, the weight distributions of the binary subfield codes of these quaternary codes are also computed by employing the general characterization. Furthermore, we present two infinite families of optimal linear codes with re…
Based on the generic construction of linear codes, we construct linear codes over the ring $\Bbb Z_4$ via posets of the disjoint union of two chains. We determine the Lee weight distributions of the quaternary codes. Moreover, we obtain some new linear quaternary codes and good binary codes by using the Gray map.
We give two methods for constructing many linear complementary dual (LCD for short) codes from a given LCD code, by modifying some known methods for constructing self-dual codes. Using the methods, we construct binary LCD codes and quaternary Hermitian LCD codes, which improve the previously known lower bound on the largest minimum weights.
We present a list decoding algorithm for quaternary negacyclic codes over the Lee metric. To achieve this result, we use a Sudan-Guruswami type list decoding algorithm for Reed-Solomon codes over certain ring alphabets. Our decoding strategy for negacyclic codes over the ring $\mathbb Z_4$ combines the list decoding algorithm by Wu with the Gröbner basis approach for solving a key equation due to Byrne and Fitzpatrick.
Linear complementary dual (LCD) codes, which is a class of linear codes introduced by Massey, have been extensively studied in literature recently. It has been shown that LCD codes can help to improve the security of the information processed by sensitive devices, especially against so-called side-channel attacks (SCA) and fault invasive attacks. In this paper, Tables are presented of good quaternary Hermitian LCD codes and there are used in the construction of puncturing, extending, shortening and combination codes. Results including tables 3 of the best-known quaternary Hermitian LCD codes o…
We propose a method for a classification of quaternary Hermitian LCD codes having large minimum weights. As an example, we give a classification of quaternary optimal Hermitian LCD codes of dimension 3.
We consider signature waveform design for synchronous code division multiplexing in the presence of interference and wireless multipath fading channels. The adaptive real/complex signature that maximizes the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the output of the maximum-SINR filter is the minimum-eigenvalue eigenvector of the disturbance autocovariance matrix. In digital communication systems, the signature alphabet is finite and digital signature optimization is NP-hard. In this paper, first we convert the maximum-SINR objective of adaptive binary signature design into an equival…
Linear codes with small hulls over finite fields have been extensively studied due to their practical applications in computational complexity and information protection. In this paper, we develop a general method to determine the exact value of $D_4^H(n,k,1)$ for $n\leq 12$ or $k\in \{1,2,3,n-1,n-2,n-3\}$, where $D_4^H(n,k,1)$ denotes the largest minimum distance among all quaternary linear $[n,k]$ codes with one-dimensional Hermitian hull. As a consequence, we solve a conjecture proposed by Mankean and Jitman on the largest minimum distance of a quaternary linear code with one-dimensional He…
Hermitian linear complementary dual codes are linear codes whose intersection with their Hermitian dual code is trivial. The largest minimum weight among quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes of dimension $2$ is known for each length. We give the complete classification of optimal quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes of dimension $2$.
The largest minimum weights among quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes are known for dimension $2$. In this paper, we give some conditions for the nonexistence of quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes with large minimum weights. As an application, we completely determine the largest minimum weights for dimension $3$, by using a classification of some quaternary codes. In addition, for a positive integer $s$, a maximal entanglement entanglement-assisted quantum $[[21s+5,3,16s+3;21s+2]]$ codes is constructed for the first time from a quaternary Hermitian linear com…
Recent years, several new types of codes were introduced to provide fault-tolerance and guarantee system reliability in distributed storage systems, among which locally repairable codes (LRCs for short) have played an important role. A linear code is said to have locality $r$ if each of its code symbols can be repaired by accessing at most $r$ other code symbols. For an LRC with length $n$, dimension $k$ and locality $r$, its minimum distance $d$ was proved to satisfy the Singleton-like bound $d\leq n-k-\lceil k/r\rceil+2$. Since then, many works have been done for constructing LRCs meeting th…
For $k \ge 2$ and a positive integer $d_0$, we show that if there exists no quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual $[n,k,d]$ code with $d \ge d_0$ and Hermitian dual distance greater than or equal to $2$, then there exists no quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual $[n,k,d]$ code with $d \ge d_0$ and Hermitian dual distance $1$. As a consequence, we generalize a result by Araya, Harada and Saito on the nonexistence of some quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes.
Aiming to recover the data from several concurrent node failures, linear $r$-LRC codes with locality $r$ were extended into $(r, δ)$-LRC codes with locality $(r, δ)$ which can enable the local recovery of a failed node in case of more than one node failure. Optimal LRC codes are those whose parameters achieve the generalized Singleton bound with equality. In the present paper, we are interested in studying optimal LRC codes over small fields and, more precisely, over $\mathbb{F}_4$. We shall adopt an approach by investigating optimal quaternary $(r,δ)$-LRC codes through their parity-check matr…
We give restrictions on the weight enumerators of ternary near-extremal self-dual codes of length divisible by $12$ and quaternary near-extremal Hermitian self-dual codes of length divisible by $6$. We consider the weight enumerators for which there is a ternary near-extremal self-dual code of length $12m$ for $m =3,4,5,6$. Also we consider the weight enumerators for which there is a quaternary near-extremal Hermitian self-dual code of length $6m$ for $m =4,5,6$.
Tang and Ding \cite{X. Tang} present a series of quaternary sequences $w(a, b)$ interleaved by two binary sequences $a$ and $b$ with ideal autocorrelation and show that such interleaved quaternary sequences have optimal autocorrelation. In this paper we consider the 4-adic complexity $FC_{w}(4)$ of such quaternary sequence $w=w(a, b)$. We present a general formula on $FC_{w}(4)$, $w=w(a, b)$. As a direct consequence, we obtain a general lower bound $FC_{w}(4)\geq\log_{4}(4^{n}-1)$ where $2n$ is the period of the sequence $w$. By taking $a$ and $b$ to be several types of known binary sequences …
We establish the existence of optimal maximal entanglement entanglement-assisted quantum $[[n,k,d;n-k]]_2$ codes for $(n,k,d)=(14,6,7)$, $(15,7,7)$, $(17,6,9)$, $(17,7,8)$, $(19,7,9)$ and $(20,7,10)$. These codes are obtained from quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes. We also give some observation on the largest minimum weights.
We introduce a general construction of many Hermitian LCD $[n, k]$ codes from a given Hermitian LCD $[n, k]$ code. Furthermore, we present some results on punctured codes and shortened codes of quaternary Hermitian LCD codes. As an application, we improve some of the previously known lower bounds on the largest minimum weights of quaternary Hermitian LCD codes of length $12 \le n \le 30$.
Locally repairable codes enables fast repair of node failure in a distributed storage system. The code symbols in a codeword are stored in different storage nodes, such that a disk failure can be recovered by accessing a small fraction of the storage nodes. The number of storage nodes that are contacted during the repair of a failed node is a parameter called locality. We consider locally repairable codes that can be locally recovered in the presence of multiple node failures. The punctured code obtained by removing the code symbols in the complement of a repair group is called a local code. W…
Maximum distance separable (MDS) codes are very important in both theory and practice. There is a classical construction of a family of $[2^m+1, 2u-1, 2^m-2u+3]$ MDS codes for $1 \leq u \leq 2^{m-1}$, which are cyclic, reversible and BCH codes over $\mathrm{GF}(2^m)$. The objective of this paper is to study the quaternary subfield subcodes and quaternary subfield codes of a subfamily of the MDS codes for even $m$. A family of quaternary cyclic codes is obtained. These quaternary codes are distance-optimal in some cases and very good in general. Furthermore, infinite families of $3$-designs fro…
In this work, we give three new techniques for constructing Hermitian self-dual codes over commutative Frobenius rings with a non-trivial involutory automorphism using $λ$-circulant matrices. The new constructions are derived as modifications of various well-known circulant constructions of self-dual codes. Applying these constructions together with the building-up construction, we construct many new best known quaternary Hermitian self-dual codes of lengths 26, 32, 36, 38 and 40.
A new method to construct $q$-ary complementary sequence (or array) sets (CSSs) and complete complementary codes (CCCs) of size $N$ is introduced in this paper. An algorithm on how to compute the explicit form of the functions in constructed CSS and CCC is also given. A general form of these functions only depends on a basis of functions from $\Z_N$ to $\Z_q$ and representatives in the equivalent class of Butson-type Hadamard matrices. Surprisingly, all the functions fill up a larger number of cosets of a linear code, compared with the existing constructions. From our general construction, its…
We show that any ternary Euclidean (resp.\ quaternary Hermitian) linear complementary dual $[n,k]$ code contains a Euclidean (resp.\ Hermitian) linear complementary dual $[n,k-1]$ subcode for $2 \le k \le n$. As a consequence, we derive a bound on the largest minimum weights among ternary Euclidean linear complementary dual codes and quaternary Hermitian linear complementary dual codes.
Linear complementary dual codes were defined by Massey in 1992, and were used to give an optimum linear coding solution for the two user binary adder channel. In this paper, we define the analog of LCD codes over fields in the ambient space with mixed binary and quaternary alphabets. These codes are additive, in the sense that they are additive subgroups, rather than linear as they are not vector spaces over some finite field. We study the structure of these codes and we use the canonical Gray map from this space to the Hamming space to construct binary LCD codes in certain cases.
Codes based on sparse matrices have good performance and can be efficiently decoded by belief-propagation (BP). Decoding binary stabilizer codes needs a quaternary BP for (additive) codes over GF(4), which has a higher check-node complexity compared to a binary BP for codes over GF(2). Moreover, BP decoding of stabilizer codes suffers a performance loss from the short cycles in the underlying Tanner graph. In this paper, we propose a refined BP algorithm for decoding quantum codes by passing scalar messages. For a given error syndrome, this algorithm decodes to the same output as the conventio…
Linear complementary dual (LCD) codes are linear codes which intersect their dual codes trivially, which have been of interest and extensively studied due to their practical applications in computational complexity and information protection. In this paper, we give some methods for constructing LCD codes over small finite fields by modifying some typical methods for constructing linear codes. We show that all odd-like binary LCD codes, ternary LCD codes and quaternary Hermitian LCD codes can be constructed using the modified methods. Our results improve the known lower bounds on the largest mi…
We present new constructions of binary quantum codes from quaternary linear Hermitian self-dual codes. Our main ingredients for these constructions are nearly self-orthogonal cyclic or duadic codes over F_4. An infinite family of $0$-dimensional binary quantum codes is provided. We give minimum distance lower bounds for our quantum codes in terms of the minimum distance of their ingredient linear codes. We also present new results on the minimum distance of linear cyclic codes using their fixed subcodes. Finally, we list many new record-breaking quantum codes obtained from our constructions.
We describe properties and constructions of constraint-based codes for DNA-based data storage which account for the maximum repetition length and AT/GC balance. We present algorithms for computing the number of sequences with maximum repetition length and AT/GC balance constraint. We describe routines for translating binary runlength limited and/or balanced strings into DNA strands, and compute the efficiency of such routines. We show that the implementation of AT/GC-balanced codes is straightforward accomplished with binary balanced codes. We present codes that account for both the maximum re…
