We study asymptotic behaviours of a non-linear vertex-reinforced jump process defined on an arbitrary infinite graph with bounded degree. We prove that if the reinforcement function $w$ is reciprocally integrable and non-decreasing, then the process visits only a finite number of vertices. In the case where $w$ is regularly varying with index $α>1$, we show that the process eventually gets stuck on a star-shaped subgraph and there is exactly one vertex with unbounded local time.
We prove that the only nearest neighbor jump process with local dependence on the occupation times satisfying the partial exchangeability property is the vertex reinforced jump process, under some technical conditions. This result gives a counterpart to the characterization of edge reinforced random walk given by Rolles.
We introduce random interlacements for transient vertex-reinforced jump processes on a general graph $G$. Using increasing finite subgraphs $G_n$ of $G$ with wired boundary conditions, we show convergence of the vertex-reinforced jump process on $G_n$ observed in a finite window to the random interlacement observed in the same window.
Consider a vertex-reinforced jump process defined on a regular tree, where each vertex has exactly $b$ children, with $b \ge 3$. We prove the strong law of large numbers and the central limit theorem for the distance of the process from the root. Notice that it is still unknown if vertex-reinforced jump process is transient on the binary tree.
Sabot and Zeng have discovered two martingales, one of which played a key role in their investigation of the vertex-reinforced jump process. Starting from the related supersymmetric hyperbolic sigma model, we give an alternative derivation of these two martingales. They turn out to be the first two instances in an infinite hierarchy of martingales, derived from a generating function.
We give an alternative proof of the fact that the vertex reinforced jump process on Galton- Watson tree has a phase transition between recurrence and transience as a function of c, the initial local time, see [3]. Further, applying the techniques in [1], we show a phase transition between positive speed and null speed for the discrete time process associated in the transient regime.
The aim of our work is to study vertex-reinforced jump processes with super-linear weight function $w(t) = t^α$ , for some $α>1$. On any complete graph $G = (V, E)$, we prove that there is one vertex $v \in V$ such that the total time spent at $v$ almost surely tends to infinity while the total time spent at the remaining vertices is bounded.
Consider a negatively drifted one dimensional Brownian motion starting at positive initial position, its first hitting time to 0 has the inverse Gaussian law. Moreover, conditionally on this hitting time, the Brownian motion up to that time has the law of a 3- dimensional Bessel bridge. In this paper, we give a generalization of this result to a family of Brownian motions with interacting drifts, indexed by the vertices of a conductance network. The hitting times are equal in law to the inverse of a random potential that appears in the analysis of a self-interacting process called the Vertex R…
This paper concerns the Vertex Reinforced Jump Process (VRJP) and its representations as a Markov process in random environment. We show that all possible representations of the VRJP as a mixture of Markov processes can be expressed in a similar form, using a random potential and harmonic functions for an associated operator. This allows to show that the VRJP on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ (with certain initial conditions) has a unique representation, by proving that an associated Martin boundary is trivial. Moreover, on infinite trees, we construct a family of representations, that are all different when …
We prove that any vertex-reinforced random walk on the integer lattice with non-decreasing reinforcement sequence $w$ satisfying $w(k) = o(k^α)$ for some $α< 1/2$ is recurrent. This improves on previous results of Volkov (2006) and Schapira (2012).
We prove that vertex-reinforced random walk on the integers with weight of order k to the power alpha, for alpha in [0, 1/2), is recurrent. This confirms a conjecture of Volkov for alpha<1/2. The conjecture for alpha in [1/2, 1) remains open.
We continue the investigation of the localization phenomenon for a Vertex Reinforced Random Walk on the integer lattice. We provide some partial results towards a full characterization of the weights for which localization on 5 sites occurs with positive probability, and make some conjecture concerning the almost sure behavior.
We consider a vertex reinforced random walk on the integer lattice with sub-linear reinforcement. Under some assumptions on the regular variation of the weight function, we characterize whether the walk gets stuck on a finite interval. When this happens, we estimate the size of the localization set. In particular, we show that, for any odd number $N$ larger than or equal to 5, there exists a vertex reinforced random walk which localizes with positive probability on exactly $N$ consecutive sites.
Using an approximation by a set-valued dynamical system, this paper studies a class of non Markovian and non homogeneous stochastic processes on a finite state space. It provides an unified approach to simulated annealing type processes. It permits to study new models of vertex reinforced random walks and new models of learning in games including Markovian fictitious play.
We study Vertex-Reinforced-Random-Walk on the complete graph with weights of the form $w(n)=n^α$, with $α>1$. Unlike for the Edge-Reinforced-Random-Walk, which in this case localizes a.s. on 2 sites, here we observe various phase transitions, and in particular localization on arbitrary large sets is possible, provided $α$ is close enough to 1. Our proof relies on stochastic approximation techniques. At the end of the paper, we also prove a general result ensuring that any strongly reinforced VRRW on any bounded degree graph localizes a.s. on a finite subgraph.
We prove that Vertex Reinforced Random Walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ with weight of order $k^α$, with $α\in [0,1/2)$, is either almost surely recurrent or almost surely transient. This improves a previous result of Volkov who showed that the set of sites which are visited infinitely often was a.s. either empty or infinite.
We consider a continuous-time vertex reinforced jump process on a supercritical Galton-Watson tree. This process takes values in the set of vertices of the tree and jumps to a neighboring vertex with rate proportional to the local time at that vertex plus a constant $c$. The walk is either transient or recurrent depending on this parameter $c$. In this paper, we complete results previously obtained by Davis and Volkov [Probab. Theory Related Fields 123 (2002) 281-300, Probab. Theory Related Fields 128 (2004) 42-62] and Collevecchio [Ann. Probab. 34 (2006) 870-878, Electron. J. Probab. 14 (2009…
We characterize non-decreasing weight functions for which the associated one-dimensional vertex reinforced random walk (VRRW) localizes on 4 sites. A phase transition appears for weights of order $n\log \log n$: for weights growing faster than this rate, the VRRW localizes almost surely on at most 4 sites whereas for weights growing slower, the VRRW cannot localize on less than 5 sites. When $w$ is of order $n\log \log n$, the VRRW localizes almost surely on either 4 or 5 sites, both events happening with positive probability.
We prove polynomial decay of the mixing field of the Vertex Reinforced Jump Process (VRJP) on $\Bbb{Z}^2$ with bounded conductances. Using [17] we deduce that the VRJP on $\Bbb{Z}^2$ with any constant conductances is almost surely recurrent. It gives a counterpart of the result of Merkl, Rolles [14] and Sabot, Zeng [17] for the 2-dimensional Edge Reinforced Random Walk.
This article studies vertex reinforced random walks that are non-backtracking (denoted VRNBW), i.e. U-turns forbidden. With this last property and for a strong reinforcement, the emergence of a path may occur with positive probability. These walks are thus useful to model the path formation phenomenon, observed for example in ant colonies. This study is carried out in two steps. First, a large class of reinforced random walks is introduced and results on the asymptotic behavior of these processes are proved. Second, these results are applied to VRNBWs on complete graphs and for reinforced weig…
Vertex-reinforced random walk (VRRW), defined by Pemantle in 1988, is a random process that takes values in the vertex set of a graph G, which is more likely to visit vertices it has visited before. Pemantle and Volkov considered the case when the underlying graph is the one-dimensional integer lattice Z. They proved that the range is almost surely finite and that with positive probability the range contains exactly five points. They conjectured that this second event holds with probability 1. The proof of this conjecture is the main purpose of this paper.
In this paper we introduce a new simple but powerful general technique for the study of edge- and vertex-reinforced processes with super-linear reinforcement, based on the use of order statistics for the number of edge, respectively of vertex, traversals. The technique relies on upper bound estimates for the number of edge traversals, proved in a different context by Cotar and Limic [Ann. Appl. Probab. (2009)] for finite graphs with edge reinforcement. We apply our new method both to edge- and to vertex-reinforced random walks with super-linear reinforcement on arbitrary infinite connected gra…
Vertex-Reinforced Random Walk (VRRW), defined by Pemantle (1988a), is a random process in a continuously changing environment which is more likely to visit states it has visited before. We consider VRRW on arbitrary graphs and show that on almost all of them, VRRW visits only finitely many vertices with a positive probability. We conjecture that on all graphs of bounded degree, this happens a.s., and provide a proof only for trees of this type. We distinguish between several different patterns of localization and explicitly describe the long-run structure of VRRW, which depends on whether a gr…
In this paper, we define an extension of the supersymmetric hyperbolic nonlinear sigma model introduced by Zirnbauer. We show that it arises as a weak joint limit of a time-changed version introduced by Sabot and Tarrès of the vertex-reinforced jump process. It describes the asymptotics of rescaled crossing numbers, rescaled fluctuations of local times, asymptotic local times on a logarithmic scale, endpoints of paths, and last exit trees.
We give a simple proof for recurrence of vertex reinforced jump process on \(\mathbb{Z}^d\), under strong reinforcement. Moreover, we show how the previous result implies that linearly edge-reinforced random walk on \ \(\mathbb{Z}^d\) is {recurrent} for strong reinforcement. Finally, we prove that the \(H^{(2|2)}\) model on \(\mathbb{Z}^d\) localizes at strong disorder. Even though these results are well-known, we propose a unified approach, {which also has the advantage to provide shorter proofs}, and relies on estimating fractional moments, introduced by Aizenman and Molchanov.
We describe a model for $m$ vertex reinforced interacting random walks on complete graphs with $d\geq 2$ vertices. The transition probability of a random walk to a given vertex depends exponentially on the proportion of visits made by all walks to that vertex. The individual proportion of visits is modulated by a strength parameter that can be set equal to any real number. This model covers a large variety of interactions including different vertex repulsion and attraction strengths between any two random walks as well as self-reinforced interactions. We show that the process of empirical vert…
We consider a non-linear vertex-reinforced jump process (VRJP($w$)) on $\mathbb{Z}$ with an increasing measurable weight function $w:[1,\infty)\to [1,\infty)$ and initial weights equal to one. Our main goal is to study the asymptotic behaviour of VRJP($w$) depending on the integrability of the reciprocal of $w$. In particular, we prove that if $\int_1^{\infty} \frac{\text{d}u}{w(u)} =\infty$ then the process is recurrent, i.e. it visits each vertex infinitely often and all local times are unbounded. On the other hand, if $\int_1^{\infty} \frac{\text{d} u}{w(u)} <\infty$ and there exists a $ρ>0…
Edge-reinforced random walk (ERRW), introduced by Coppersmith and Diaconis in 1986, is a random process, which takes values in the vertex set of a graph $G$, and is more likely to cross edges it has visited before. We show that it can be represented in terms of a Vertex-reinforced jump process (VRJP) with independent gamma conductances: the VRJP was conceived by Werner and first studied by Davis and Volkov (2002,2004), and is a continuous-time process favouring sites with more local time. We calculate, for any finite graph $G$, the limiting measure of the centred occupation time measure of VRJ…
We study a lattice sigma model which is expected to reflect Anderson localization and delocalization transition for real symmetric band matrices in 3D, but describes the mixing measure for a vertex reinforced jump process too. For this model we prove exponential localization at any temperature in a strip, and more generally in any quasi-one dimensional graph, with pinning (mass) at only one site. The proof uses a Mermin-Wagner type argument and a transfer operator approach.
We introduce a new exponential family of probability distributions, which can be viewed as a multivariate generalization of the Inverse Gaussian distribution. Considered as the potential of a random Schrödinger operator, this exponential family is related to the random field that gives the mixing measure of the Vertex Reinforced Jump Process (VRJP), and hence to the mixing measure of the Edge Reinforced Random Walk (ERRW), the so-called magic formula. In particular, it yields by direct computation the value of the normalizing constants of these mixing measures, which solves a question raised b…
We prove the vertex-reinforced jump process (VRJP) is recurrent in two dimensions for any translation invariant finite range initial rates. Our proof has two main ingredients. The first is a direct connection between the VRJP and sigma models whose target space is a hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^n$ or its supersymmetric counterpart $\mathbb{H}^{2|2}$. These results are analogues of well-known relations between the Gaussian free field and the local times of simple random walk. The second ingredient is a Mermin--Wagner theorem for these sigma models. This result is of intrinsic interest for the s…
This paper considers a class of non-Markovian discrete-time random processes on a finite state space {1,...,d}. The transition probabilities at each time are influenced by the number of times each state has been visited and by a fixed a priori likelihood matrix, R, which is real, symmetric and nonnegative. Let S_i(n) keep track of the number of visits to state i up to time n, and form the fractional occupation vector, V(n), where v_i(n)=S_i(n)/(sum_{j=1}^d S_j(n)). It is shown that V(n) converges to a set of critical points for the quadratic form H with matrix R, and that under nondegeneracy c…
This paper concerns the Vertex reinforced jump process (VRJP), the Edge reinforced random walk (ERRW) and their link with a random Schrödinger operator. On infinite graphs, we define a 1-dependent random potential $β$ extending that defined in [20] on finite graphs, and consider its associated random Schrödinger operator $H_β$. We construct a random function $ψ$ as a limit of martingales, such that $ψ=0$ when the VRJP is recurrent, and $ψ$ is a positive generalized eigenfunction of the random Schrödinger operator with eigenvalue $0$, when the VRJP is transient. Then we prove a representation o…
We generalize a result from Volkov [Ann. Probab. 29 (2001) 66--91] and prove that, on a large class of locally finite connected graphs of bounded degree $(G,\sim)$ and symmetric reinforcement matrices $a=(a_{i,j})_{i,j\in G}$, the vertex-reinforced random walk (VRRW) eventually localizes with positive probability on subsets which consist of a complete $d$-partite subgraph with possible loops plus its outer boundary. We first show that, in general, any stable equilibrium of a linear symmetric replicator dynamics with positive payoffs on a graph $G$ satisfies the property that its support is a c…
A step reinforced random walk is a discrete time process with memory such that at each time step, with fixed probability $p \in (0,1)$, it repeats a previously performed step chosen uniformly at random while with complementary probability $1-p$, it performs an independent step with fixed law. In the continuum, the main result of Bertoin in [7] states that the random walk constructed from the discrete-time skeleton of a Lévy process for a time partition of mesh-size $1/n$ converges, as $n \uparrow \infty$ in the sense of finite dimensional distributions, to a process $\hatξ$ referred to as a no…
We introduce a continuous space limit of the Vertex Reinforced Jump Process (VRJP) in dimension one, which we call Linearly Reinforced Motion (LRM) on $\R$. It is constructed out of a convergent Bass-Burdzy flow. The proof goes through the representation of the VRJP as a mixture of Markov jump processes. As a by-product this gives a representation in terms of a mixture of diffusions of the LRM and of the Bass-Burdzy flow itself. We also show that our continuous space limit can be obtained out of the Edge Reinforced Random Walk (ERRW), since the ERRW and the VRJP are known to be closely related…
Vertex-reinforced random walk is defined in Pemantle's (1988) thesis; it is a random walk that is biased to visit sites it has already visited a lot. We show that this reinforcement scheme, in contrast to the scheme of edge-reinforcement, causes random walk on a line to get trapped in a finite set.
We prove that the linearly edge reinforced random walk (LRRW) on any graph with bounded degrees is recurrent for sufficiently small initial weights. In contrast, we show that for non-amenable graphs the LRRW is transient for sufficiently large initial weights, thereby establishing a phase transition for the LRRW on non-amenable graphs. While we rely on the description of the LRRW as a mixture of Markov chains, the proof does not use the magic formula. We also derive analogous results for the vertex reinforced jump process.
We introduce a simple technique for proving the transience of certain processes defined on the random tree $\mathcal{G}$ generated by a supercritical branching process. We prove the transience for once-reinforced random walks on $\mathcal{G}$, that is, a generalization of a result of Durrett, Kesten and Limic [Probab. Theory Related Fields 122 (2002) 567--592]. Moreover, we give a new proof for the transience of a family of biased random walks defined on $\mathcal{G}$. Other proofs of this fact can be found in [Ann. Probab. 16 (1988) 1229--1241] and [Ann. Probab. 18 (1990) 931--958] as part of…
We provide a short proof of the Ray-Knight second generalized Theorem, using a martingale which can be seen (on the positive quadrant) as the Radon-Nikodym derivative of the reversed vertex-reinforced jump process measure with respect to the Markov jump process with the same conductances. Next we show that a variant of this process provides an inversion of that Ray-Knight identity. We give a similar result for the Ray-Knight first generalized Theorem.
We consider a class of multi-particle reinforced interacting random walks. In this model, there are some (finite or infinite) particles performing random walks on a given (finite or infinite) connected graph, so that each particle has higher probability to visit neighboring vertices or edges which have been seldom visited by the other particles. Specifically we investigate two particles' vertex-reinforced interacting random walks on finite complete graphs. By a dynamical approach we prove that the two particles' occupation measure asymptotically has small joint support almost surely if the rei…
The goal is to show that an edge-reinforced random walk on a graph of bounded degree, with reinforcement weight function $W$ taken from a general class of reciprocally summable reinforcement weight functions, traverses a random attracting edge at all large times. The statement of the main theorem is very close to settling a conjecture of Sellke [Technical Report 94-26 (1994) Purdue Univ.]. An important corollary of this main result says that if $W$ is reciprocally summable and nondecreasing, the attracting edge exists on any graph of bounded degree, with probability 1. Another corollary is the…
This work deals with systems of interacting reinforced stochastic processes, where each process $X^j=(X_{n,j})_n$ is located at a vertex $j$ of a finite weighted direct graph, and it can be interpreted as the sequence of "actions" adopted by an agent $j$ of the network. The interaction among the evolving dynamics of these processes depends on the weighted adjacency matrix $W$ associated to the underlying graph: indeed, the probability that an agent $j$ chooses a certain action depends on its personal "inclination" $Z_{n,j}$ and on the inclinations $Z_{n,h}$, with $h\neq j$, of the other agents…
