A proper Helly circular-arc graph is an intersection graph of a set of arcs on a circle such that none of the arcs properly contains any other arc and every set of pairwise intersecting arcs has a common intersection. The Proper Helly Circular-arc Vertex Deletion problem takes as input a graph $G$ and an integer $k$, and the goal is to check if we can remove at most $k$ vertices from the graph to obtain a proper Helly circular-arc graph; the parameter is $k$. Recently, Cao et al.~[MFCS 2023] obtained an FPT algorithm for this (and related) problem. In this work, we obtain a polynomial kernel for the problem.
A Helly circular-arc graph is the intersection graph of a set of arcs on a circle having the Helly property. We introduce essential obstacles, which are a refinement of the notion of obstacles, and prove that essential obstacles are precisely the minimal forbidden induced circular-arc subgraphs for the class of Helly circular-arc graphs. We show that it is possible to find in linear time, in any given obstacle, some minimal forbidden induced subgraph for the class of Helly circular-arc graphs contained as an induced subgraph. Moreover, relying on an existing linear-time algorithm for finding i…
A Helly circular-arc model M = (C,A) is a circle C together with a Helly family \A of arcs of C. If no arc is contained in any other, then M is a proper Helly circular-arc model, if every arc has the same length, then M is a unit Helly circular-arc model, and if there are no two arcs covering the circle, then M is a normal Helly circular-arc model. A Helly (resp. proper Helly, unit Helly, normal Helly) circular-arc graph is the intersection graph of the arcs of a Helly (resp. proper Helly, unit Helly, normal Helly) circular-arc model. In this article we study these subclasses of Helly circular…
The isomorphism problem is known to be efficiently solvable for interval graphs, while for the larger class of circular-arc graphs its complexity status stays open. We consider the intermediate class of intersection graphs for families of circular arcs that satisfy the Helly property. We solve the isomorphism problem for this class in logarithmic space. If an input graph has a Helly circular-arc model, our algorithm constructs it canonically, which means that the models constructed for isomorphic graphs are equal.
A normal Helly circular-arc graph is the intersection graph of arcs on a circle of which no three or less arcs cover the whole circle. Lin, Soulignac, and Szwarcfiter [Discrete Appl. Math. 2013] characterized circular-arc graphs that are not normal Helly circular-arc graphs, and used it to develop the first recognition algorithm for this graph class. As open problems, they ask for the forbidden induced subgraph characterization and a direct recognition algorithm for normal Helly circular-arc graphs, both of which are resolved by the current paper. Moreover, when the input is not a normal Helly…
The partial representation extension problem generalizes the recognition problem for classes of graphs defined in terms of vertex representations. We exhibit circular-arc graphs as the first example of a graph class where the recognition is polynomially solvable while the representation extension problem is NP-complete. In this setting, several arcs are predrawn and we ask whether this partial representation can be completed. We complement this hardness argument with tractability results of the representation extension problem on various subclasses of circular-arc graphs, most notably on all v…
An interval graph is the intersection graph of a finite set of intervals on a line and a circular-arc graph is the intersection graph of a finite set of arcs on a circle. While a forbidden induced subgraph characterization of interval graphs was found fifty years ago, finding an analogous characterization for circular-arc graphs is a long-standing open problem. In this work, we study the intersection graphs of finite sets of arcs on a circle no three of which cover the circle, known as normal Helly circular-arc graphs. Those circular-arc graphs which are minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for…
The Helly number of a family of sets with empty intersection is the size of its largest inclusion-wise minimal sub-family with empty intersection. Let F be a finite family of open subsets of an arbitrary locally arc-wise connected topological space Gamma. Assume that for every sub-family G of F the intersection of the elements of G has at most r connected components, each of which is a Q-homology cell. We show that the Helly number of F is at most r(d_Gamma+1), where d_Gamma is the smallest integer j such that every open set of Gamma has trivial Q-homology in dimension j and higher. (In partic…
We compute a canonical circular-arc representation for a given circular-arc (CA) graph which implies solving the isomorphism and recognition problem for this class. To accomplish this we split the class of CA graphs into uniform and non-uniform ones and employ a generalized version of the argument given by Köbler et al (2013) that has been used to show that the subclass of Helly CA graphs can be canonized in logspace. For uniform CA graphs our approach works in logspace and in addition to that Helly CA graphs are a strict subset of uniform CA graphs. Thus our result is a generalization of the …
We give a linear-time algorithm that checks for isomorphism between two 0-1 matrices that obey the circular-ones property. This algorithm leads to linear-time isomorphism algorithms for related graph classes, including Helly circular-arc graphs, Γ-circular-arc graphs, proper circular-arc graphs and convex-round graphs.
We present a dynamic algorithm for the recognition of proper circular-arc (PCA) graphs, that supports the insertion and removal of vertices (together with its incident edges). The main feature of the algorithm is that it outputs a minimally non-PCA induced subgraph when the insertion of a vertex fails. Each operation cost $O(\log n + d)$ time, where $n$ is the number vertices and $d$ is the degree of the modified vertex. When removals are disallowed, each insertion is processed in $O(d)$ time. The algorithm also provides two constant-time operations to query if the dynamic graph is proper Hell…
A directed graph is oriented if it can be obtained by orienting the edges of a simple, undirected graph. For an oriented graph $G$, let $β(G)$ denote the size of a minimum feedback arc set, a smallest subset of edges whose deletion leaves an acyclic subgraph. A simple consequence of a result of Berger and Shor is that any oriented graph $G$ with $m$ edges satisfies $β(G) = m/2 - Ω(m^{3/4})$. We observe that if an oriented graph $G$ has a fixed forbidden subgraph $B$, the upper bound of $β(G) = m/2 - Ω(m^{3/4})$ is best possible as a function of the number of edges if $B$ is not bipartite, but …
We attempt to generalize a theorem of Nash-Williams stating that a graph has a $k$-arc-connected orientation if and only if it is $2k$-edge-connected. In a strongly connected digraph we call an arc {\it deletable} if its deletion leaves a strongly connected digraph. Given a $3$-edge-connected graph $G$, we define its Frank number $f(G)$ to be the minimum number $k$ such that there exist $k$ orientations of $G$ with the property that every edge becomes a deletable arc in at least one of these orientations. We are interested in finding a good upper bound for the Frank number. We prove that $f(G)…
Biró, Hujter, and Tuza introduced the concept of $H$-graphs (1992), intersection graphs of connected subgraphs of a subdivision of a graph $H$. They naturally generalize many important classes of graphs, e.g., interval graphs and circular-arc graphs. We continue the study of these graph classes by considering coloring, clique, and isomorphism problems on $H$-graphs. We show that for any fixed $H$ containing a certain 3-node, 6-edge multigraph as a minor that the clique problem is APX-hard on $H$-graphs and the isomorphism problem is isomorphism-complete. We also provide positive results on $H$…
A skew-symmetric graph $(D=(V,A),σ)$ is a directed graph $D$ with an involution $σ$ on the set of vertices and arcs. In this paper, we introduce a separation problem, $d$-Skew-Symmetric Multicut, where we are given a skew-symmetric graph $D$, a family of $\cal T$ of $d$-sized subsets of vertices and an integer $k$. The objective is to decide if there is a set $X\subseteq A$ of $k$ arcs such that every set $J$ in the family has a vertex $v$ such that $v$ and $σ(v)$ are in different connected components of $D'=(V,A\setminus (X\cup σ(X))$. In this paper, we give an algorithm for this problem whic…
We study the problem of learning the structure of an optimal Bayesian network when additional constraints are posed on the network or on its moralized graph. More precisely, we consider the constraint that the network or its moralized graph are close, in terms of vertex or edge deletions, to a sparse graph class $Π$. For example, we show that learning an optimal network whose moralized graph has vertex deletion distance at most $k$ from a graph with maximum degree 1 can be computed in polynomial time when $k$ is constant. This extends previous work that gave an algorithm with such a running ti…
Best match graphs (BMGs) are vertex-colored directed graphs that were introduced to model the relationships of genes (vertices) from different species (colors) given an underlying evolutionary tree that is assumed to be unknown. In real-life applications, BMGs are estimated from sequence similarity data. Measurement noise and approximation errors usually result in empirically determined graphs that in general violate characteristic properties of BMGs. The arc modification problems for BMGs aim at correcting such violations and thus provide a means to improve the initial estimates of best match…
Biró et al. (1992) introduced $H$-graphs, intersection graphs of connected subgraphs of a subdivision of a graph $H$. They are related to many classes of geometric intersection graphs, e.g., interval graphs, circular-arc graphs, split graphs, and chordal graphs. We negatively answer the 25-year-old question of Biró et al. which asks if $H$-graphs can be recognized in polynomial time, for a fixed graph $H$. We prove that it is NP-complete if $H$ contains the diamond graph as a minor. We provide a polynomial-time algorithm recognizing $T$-graphs, for each fixed tree $T$. When $T$ is a star $S_d$…
We show a flow-augmentation algorithm in directed graphs: There exists a randomized polynomial-time algorithm that, given a directed graph $G$, two vertices $s,t \in V(G)$, and an integer $k$, adds (randomly) to $G$ a number of arcs such that for every minimal $st$-cut $Z$ in $G$ of size at most $k$, with probability $2^{-\mathrm{poly}(k)}$ the set $Z$ becomes a minimum $st$-cut in the resulting graph. We also provide a deterministic counterpart of this procedure. The directed flow-augmentation tool allows us to prove fixed-parameter tractability of a number of problems parameterized by the ca…
