The different spatial curvatures of the universe affect the measurement of cosmological distances, which may also contribute to explaining the observed dimming of type Ia supernovae. This phenomenon may be caused by the opacity of the universe. Similarly, the opacity of the universe can lead to a bias in our measurements of curvature. Thus, it is necessary to measure cosmic curvature and opacity simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a new model-independent method to simultaneously measure the cosmic curvature and opacity by using the latest observations of HII galaxies acting as standard candles and the latest Hubble parameter observations. The machine learning method-Artificial Neural Network is adopted to reconstruct observed Hubble parameter $H(z)$ observations. Our results support a slightly opaque and flat universe at $1σ$ confidence level by using previous 156 HII regions sample. However, the negative curvature is obtained by using the latest 181 HII regions sample in the redshift range $z\sim 2.5$. More importantly, we obtain the simultaneous measurements with precision on the cosmic opacity $\rmΔτ\sim 10^{-2}$ and curvature $\rmΔΩ_K\sim 10^{-1}$. A strong degeneracy between the cosmic opacity and curvature parameters is also revealed in this analysis.
We use the latest HII galaxy measurements to determine the value of $H_0$ adopting a combination of model-dependent and model-independent method. By constraining five cosmological models, we find that the obtained values of $H_0$ are more consistent with the recent local measurement by Riess et al. 2016 (hereafter R16) at $1σ$ confidence level, and that these five models prefer a higher best-fit value of $H_0$ than R16's result. To check the correctness of $H_0$ values obtained by model-dependent method, for the first time, we implement the model-independent Gaussian processes (GP) using the H…
Since gravitational waves (GWs) propagate freely through a perfect fluid, coalescing compact binary systems as standard sirens allow to measure the luminosity distance directly and provide distance measurements unaffected by the cosmic opacity. DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (DECIGO) is a future Japanese space gravitational-wave antenna sensitive to frequency range between target frequencies of LISA and ground-based detectors. Combining the predicted future GW observations from DECIGO and three current popular astrophysical probes (HII regions, SNe Ia Pantheon sample,…
Using the CoDa II simulation, we study the Ly$α$ transmissivity of the intergalactic medium (IGM) during reionization. At $z>6$, a typical galaxy without an active galactic nucleus fails to form a proximity zone around itself due to the overdensity of the surrounding IGM. The gravitational infall motion in the IGM makes the resonance absorption extend to the red side of Ly$α$, suppressing the transmission up to roughly the circular velocity of the galaxy. In some sight lines, an optically thin blob generated by a supernova in a neighboring galaxy results in a peak feature, which can be mistake…
The large cross-section of the Lyman alpha (Lya) line makes it a sensitive probe of the ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM). Here we present the most complete study to date of the IGM Lya opacity, and its application to the redshift evolution of the 'Lya fraction', i.e. the fraction of color-selected galaxies with a detectable Lya emission line. We use a tiered approach, which combines large-scale semi-numeric simulations of reionization with moderate-scale hydrodynamic simulations of the ionized IGM. This allows us to simultaneously account for evolution in both: (i) the opacit…
Standard candles can probe the evolution of dark energy in a large redshift range. But the cosmic opacity can degrade the quality of standard candles. In this paper, we use the latest observations, including type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) from JLA sample and Hubble parameters, to probe the opacity of the universe. In order to avoid the cosmological dependence of SNe Ia luminosity distances, a joint fitting of the SNe Ia light-curve parameters, cosmological parameters and opacity is used. In order to explore the cosmic opacity at high redshifts, the latest gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are used. At high…
The $L-σ$ relation of HII galaxies (HIIGx) calibrated by a distance indicator is a reliable standard candle for measuring the Hubble constant $H_0$. The most straightforward calibration technique anchors them with the first tier of distance ladders from the same galaxies. Recently another promising method that uses the cosmological model-independent Cosmic Chronometers (CC) as a calibrator has been proposed. We promote this technique by removing the assumptions about the cosmic flatness and using a non-parametric Artificial Neural Network for the data reconstruction process. We observe a corre…

Probing the evolution of the universe at high redshifts with standard candles is a powerful way to discriminate dark energy models, where an open question nowadays is whether this component is constant or evolves with time. One possible source of ambiguity in this kind of analyses comes from cosmic opacity, which can mimick a dark enery behaviour. However, most tests of cosmic opacity have been restricted to the redshift range $z<2$. In this work, by using luminosity distances of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), {given the validity of the Amati relation}, and the latest $H(z)$ data we determine constr…
We investigate the impact of sinks of ionizing radiation on the reionization-era 21-cm signal, focusing on 1-point statistics. We consider sinks in both the intergalactic medium and inside galaxies. At a fixed filling factor of HII regions, sinks will have two main effects on the 21-cm morphology: (i) as inhomogeneous absorbers of ionizing photons they result in smaller and more widespread cosmic HII patches; and (ii) as reservoirs of neutral gas they contribute a non-zero 21-cm signal in otherwise ionized regions. Both effects damp the contrast between neutral and ionized patches during reion…
We update constraints on cosmic opacity by combining recent SN Type Ia data compilation with the latest measurements of the Hubble expansion at redshifts between 0 and 2. The new constraint on the parameter $ε$ parametrising deviations from the luminosity-angular diameter distance relation ($d_L=d_A(1+z)^{2+ε}$), is $ε=-0.04_{-0.07}^{+0.08}$ (2-$σ$). For the redshift range between 0.2 and 0.35 this corresponds to an opacity $Δτ<0.012$ (95% C.L.), a factor of 2 stronger than the previous constraint. Various models of beyond the standard model physics that predict violation of photon number cons…
In this work, using the Gaussian process, we explore the potentiality of future gravitational wave (GW) measurements to probe cosmic opacity at high redshifts through comparing its opacity-free luminosity distance (LD) with the opacity-dependent one from the combination of Type Ia supernovae (SNIa) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The GW data, SNIa and GRB data are simulated from the measurements of the future Einstein Telescope, the actual Pantheon compilation and the latest observation of GRBs compiled by L. Amati {\it et al}, respectively. A nonparametric method is proposed to probe the spatial…
Revisiting the cosmic distance duality relation with machine learning reconstruction methods: the combination of HII galaxies and ultra-compact radio quasars
The relationship between the integrated H$β$ line luminosity and the velocity dispersion of the ionized gas of HII galaxies and giant HII regions represents an exciting standard candle that presently can be used up to redshifts z ~ 4. Locally it is used to obtain precise measurements of the Hubble constant by combining the slope of the relation obtained from nearby ($z \leq $ 0.2) HII galaxies with the zero point determined from giant HII regions belonging to an `anchor sample' of galaxies for which accurate redshift-independent distance moduli are available. We present new data for 36 giant H…
In the statistical framework of model-independent Gaussian processes (GP), we search for the evidence of dynamical dark energy (DDE) using the "Joint Light-curve Analysis" (JLA) Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) sample, the 30 latest cosmic chronometer data points (H(z)), Planck's shift parameter from cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies, the 156 latest HII galaxy measurements and 79 calibrated gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We find that the joint constraint from JLA + H(z) + CMB + HII + GRB supports the global measurement of $H_0$ by Planck collaboration very much in the low redshift range $z\i…
In this paper, we use the model dependent method to revisit the constraint on the well-known cosmic distance duality relation (CDDR). By using the latest SNIa samples, such as Union2.1, JLA and SNLS, we find that the SNIa data alone can not constrain the cosmic opacity parameter $\varepsilon$, which denotes the deviation from the CDDR, $d_{\rm L} = d_{\rm A}(1+z)^{2+\varepsilon}$, very well. The constraining power on $\varepsilon$ from the luminosity distance indicator provided by SNIa and GRB is hardly to be improved at present. When we include other cosmological observations, such as the mea…
We study the constraints on the cosmic opacity using the latest BAO and Union2 SNIa data in this paper and find that the best fit values seem to indicate that an opaque universe is preferred in redshift regions $0.20-0.35$, $0.35-0.44$ and $0.60-0.73$, whereas, a transparent universe is favored in redshift regions $0.106-0.20$, $0.44-0.57$and $0.57-0.60$. However, our result is still consistent with a transparent universe at the 1$σ$ confidence level, even though the best-fit cosmic opacity oscillates between zero and some nonzero values as the redshift varies.
We present a new determination of the primordial helium mass fraction Yp, based on 93 spectra of 86 low-metallicity extragalactic HII regions, and taking into account the latest developments concerning systematic effects. These include collisional and fluorescent enhancements of HeI recombination lines, underlying HeI stellar absorption lines, collisional and fluorescent excitation of hydrogen lines and temperature and ionization structure of the HII region. Using Monte Carlo methods to solve simultaneously for the above systematic effects, we find the best value to be Yp=0.2565+/-0.0010(stat.…
The extragalactic background light (EBL) is one of the fundamental observational quantities in cosmology. All energy releases from resolved and unresolved extragalactic sources, and the light from any truly diffuse background, excluding the cosmic microwave background (CMB), contribute to its intensity and spectral energy distribution. It therefore plays a crucial role in cosmological tests for the formation and evolution of stellar objects and galaxies, and for setting limits on exotic energy releases in the universe. The EBL also plays an important role in the propagation of very high energy…
We investigate the impact of quasars on the ionization of the surrounding intergalactic medium (IGM) with the radiative transfer code \texttt{CRASH4}, now accounting for X-rays and secondary electrons. After comparing with analytic solutions, we post-process a cosmic volume ($ \approx 1.5\times 10^4$ Mpc$^3 h^{-3}$) containing a ULAS J1120+0641-like quasar (QSO) hosted by a $5 \times 10^{11} {\rm M}_\odot h^{-1}$ dark matter (DM) halo. We find that: (i) the average HII region ($R\sim3.2$~pMpc in a lifetime $t_f = 10^7$~yrs) is mainly set by UV flux, in agreement with semi-analytic scaling rela…
The Hubble constant $H_{0}$ and matter density $Ω_{m}$ of the Universe are measured using the latest $γ$-ray attenuation results from Fermi-LAT and Cherenkov telescopes. This methodology is based upon the fact that the extragalactic background light supplies opacity for very high energy photons via photon-photon interaction. The amount of $γ$-ray attenuation along the line of sight depends on the expansion rate and matter content of the Universe. This novel strategy results in a value of $H_{0}=67.4_{-6.2}^{+6.0}$~km~s$^{-1}$~Mpc$^{-1}$ and $Ω_{m}=0.14_{-0.07}^{+0.06}$. These estimates are ind…
We propose to use alternative cosmic tracers to measure the dark energy equation of state and the matter content of the Universe [w(z) & Omega_m]. Our proposed method consists of two components: (a) tracing the Hubble relation using HII galaxies which can be detected up to very large redshifts, z~4, as an alternative to supernovae type Ia, and (b) measuring the clustering pattern of X-ray selected AGN at a median redshift of z~1. Each component of the method can in itself provide interesting constraints on the cosmological parameters, especially under our anticipation that we will reduce the c…
