The set $S(n)$ of all elementary symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables is a minimal generating set for the algebra of symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables, but over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$ the set $S(n)$ is not a minimal separating set for symmetric polynomials in general. We determined when $S(n)$ is a minimal separating set for the algebra of symmetric polynomials having the least possible number of elements.
This article studies separating invariants for the ring of multisymmetric polynomials in $m$ sets of $n$ variables over an arbitrary field $\mathbb{K}$. We prove that in order to obtain separating sets it is enough to consider polynomials that depend only on $\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor + 1$ sets of these variables. This improves a general result by Domokos about separating invariants. In addition, for $n \leq 4$ we explicitly give minimal separating sets (with respect to inclusion) for all $m$ in case $\text{char}(\mathbb{K}) = 0$ or $\text{char}(\mathbb{K}) > n$.
This note considers a finite algebraic group $G$ acting on an affine variety $X$ by automorphisms. Results of Dufresne on polynomial separating algebras for linear representations of $G$ are extended to this situation. For that purpose, we show that the Cohen-Macaulay defect of a certain ring is greater than or equal to the minimal number $k$ such that the group is generated by $(k+1)$-reflections. Under certain rather mild assumptions on $X$ and $G$ we deduce that a separating set of invariants of the smallest possible size $n = \dim(X)$ can exist only for reflection groups.
We present an algorithm which for any given ideal $I\subseteq\mathbb{K} [x,y]$ finds all elements of $I$ that have the form $f(x) - g(y)$, i.e., all elements in which no monomial is a multiple of $xy$.
It is proved that the universal degree bound for separating polynomial invariants of a finite abelian group (in non-modular characteristic) is strictly smaller than the universal degree bound for generators of polynomial invariants, unless the goup is cyclic or is the direct product of $r$ even order cyclic groups where the number of two-element direct factors is not less than the integer part of the half of $r$. A characterization of separating sets of monomials is given in terms of zero-sum sequences over abelian groups.
It is shown that two vectors with coordinates in the finite $q$-element field of characteristic $p$ belong to the same orbit under the natural action of the symmetric group if each of the elementary symmetric polynomials of degree $p^k,2p^k,\dots,(q-1)p^k$, $k=0,1,2,\dots$ has the same value on them. This separating set of polynomial invariants for the natural permutation representation of the symmetric group is not far from being minimal when $q=p$ and the dimension is large compared to $p$. A relatively small separating set of multisymmetric polynomials over the field of $q$ elements is deri…
Given an affine algebra $R=P/I$, where $P=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ is a polynomial ring over a field $K$ and $I$ is an ideal in $P$, we study re-embeddings of the affine scheme ${\rm Spec}(R)$, i.e., presentations $R \cong P'/I'$ such that $P'$ is a polynomial ring in fewer indeterminates. To find such re-embeddings, we use polynomials $f_i$ in the ideal $I$ which are coherently separating in the sense that they are of the form $f_i= z_i - g_i$ with an indeterminate $z_i$ which divides neither a term in the support of $g_i$ nor in the support of $f_j$ for $j\ne i$. The possible numbers of such sets o…
A separating algebra is, roughly speaking, a subalgebra of the ring of invariants whose elements distinguish between any two orbits that can be distinguished using invariants. In this paper, we introduce a geometric notion of separating algebra. This allows us to prove that only groups generated by reflections may have polynomial separating algebras, and only groups generated by bireflections may have complete intersection separating algebras.
Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group acting linearly on a $G$-variety $\mathcal{V}$, and let $k[\mathcal{V}]^G$ be the corresponding algebra of invariant polynomial functions. A separating set $S \subseteq k[\mathcal{V}]^G$ is a set of polynomials with the property that for all $v,w \in \mathcal{V}$, if there exists $f \in k[\mathcal{V}]^G$ separating $v$ and $w$, then there exists $f \in S$ separating $v$ and $w$. In this article we consider the action of $G = \mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ on the variety $\mathcal{M}_2^n$ of $n$-tuples of $2 \times 2$ matrices by simultaneous conjugation. Minimal…
The study of separating invariants is a recent trend in invariant theory. For a finite group acting linearly on a vector space, a separating set is a set of invariants whose elements separate the orbits of G. In some ways, separating sets often exhibit better behavior than generating sets for the ring of invariants. We investigate the least possible cardinality of a separating set for a given G-action. Our main result is a lower bound that generalizes the classical result of Serre that if the ring of invariants is polynomial then the group action must be generated by pseudoreflections. We find…
We determine the minimal number of separating invariants for the invariant ring of a matrix group $G < \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We show that this minimal number can be obtained with invariants of degree at most $|G|n(q-1)$. In the non-modular case this construction can be improved to give invariants of degree at most $n(q-1)$. As examples we study separating invariants over the field $\mathbb{F}_2$ for two important representations of the symmetric group
We consider finite dimensional representations of the dihedral group $D_{2p}$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic two where $p$ is an odd integer and study the degrees of generating and separating polynomials in the corresponding ring of invariants. We give an upper bound for the degrees of the polynomials in a minimal generating set that does not depend on $p$ when the dimension of the representation is sufficiently large. We also show that $p+1$ is the minimal number such that the invariants up to that degree always form a separating set. As well, we give an explicit descrip…
We study the r-th elementary symmetric polynomial in $n$ variables with 2<r<n. There are two kinds of linear transformations on the parameter space that leave this polynomial invariant: Namely, any permutation of the variables and simultaneous scaling by any r-th root of unity. We prove that there are no other linear transformations with this property.
Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group acting linearly on a vector space $V$, and let $k[V]^G$ be the corresponding algebra of invariant polynomial functions. A separating set $S \subseteq k[V]^G$ is a set of polynomials with the property that for all $v,w \in V$, if there exists $f \in k[V]^G$ separating $v$ and $w$, then there exists $f \in S$ separating $v$ and $w$. In this article we consider the action of $G = \mathrm{SL}_2 \times \mathrm{SL}_2$ on the $\mathbb{C}$-vector space $M_{2,2}^n$ of $n$-tuples of $2 \times 2$ matrices by multiplication on the left and the right. Minimal generating …
The Newton-Girard Formula allows one to write any elementary symmetric polynomial as a sum of products of power sum symmetric polynomials and elementary symmetric polynomials of lesser degree. It has numerous applications. We have generalized this identity by replacing the elementary symmetric polynomials with monomial symmetric polynomials.
This paper studies separating invariants of finite groups acting on affine varieties through automorphisms. Several results, proved by Serre, Dufresne, Kac-Watanabe and Gordeev, and Jeffries and Dufresne exist that relate properties of the invariant ring or a separating subalgebra to properties of the group action. All these results are limited to the case of linear actions on vector spaces. The goal of this paper is to lift this restriction by extending these results to the case of (possibly) non-linear actions on affine varieties. Under mild assumptions on the variety and the group action, w…
We show that the ring of translation invariant symmetric polynomials in n variables is isomorphic to the full polynomial ring in n-1 variables, in characteristic 0. We disprove a conjecture of Haldane regarding the structure of such polynomials. Our motivation is the fractional quantum Hall effect, where translation invariant (anti)symmetric complex n-variate polynomials characterize n-electron wavefunctions.
In this article we consider the exterior power and the symmetric tensors of the polynomial ring in one variable. The structure of an associative semigraded algebra of this polynomial ring induces on the symmetric tensors the structure of an associative semigraded algebra, and on the exterior power induces structure of a semigraded module over semigraded algebra of symmetric tensors. The algebra of symmetric polynomials is isomorphic to the algebra of the symmetric tensors of polynomial ring in one variables. We obtained the explicit expression for symmetric polynomials via elementary symmetric…
We provide a formula and a generating function for the dimension of the vector space of relative symmetric polynomials of D_n for all its irreducible one-dimensional and two-dimensional representations which were defined originally by M. Shahryari.
Given a system of n homogeneous polynomials in n variables which is equivariant with respect to the canonical actions of the symmetric group of n symbols on the variables and on the polynomials, it is proved that its resultant can be decomposed into a product of several smaller resultants that are given in terms of some divided differences. As an application, we obtain a decomposition formula for the discriminant of a multivariate homogeneous symmetric polynomial.
Adem and Reichstein introduced the ideal of truncated symmetric polynomials to present the permutation invariant subring in the cohomology of a finite product of projective spaces. Building upon their work, I describe a generating set of the ideal of truncated symmetric polynomials in arbitrary positive characteristic, and offer a conjecture for minimal generators.
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic two. We prove that a non constant monic polynomial $f\in k[X]$ of degree $n$ is the minimal/characteristic polynomial of a symmetric matrix with entries in $k$ if and only if it is not the product of pairwise distinct inseparable irreducible polynomials. In this case, we prove that $f$ is the minimal polynomial of a symmetric matrix of size $n$. We also prove that any element $α\in k_{alg}$ of degree $n\geq 1$ is the eigenvalue of a symmetrix matrix of size $n$ or $n+1$, the first case happening if and only if the minimal polynomial of $α$ is not the produc…
