英文摘要:
This paper summarises the design of the candidate ED for the Challenge on Learned Image Compression 2024. This candidate aims at providing an anchor based on conventional coding technologies to the learning-based approaches mostly targeted in the challenge.
The proposed candidate is based on the Enhanced Compression Model (ECM) developed at JVET, the Joint Video Experts Team of ITU-T VCEG and ISO/IEC MPEG.
Here, ECM is adapted to the challenge objective: to maximise the perceived quality, the encoding is performed according to a perceptual metric, also the sequence selection is performed in a perceptual manner to fit the target bit per pixel objectives.
The primary objective of this candidate is to assess the recent developments in video coding standardisation and in parallel to evaluate the progress made by learning-based techniques. To this end, this paper explains how to generate coded images fulfilling the challenge requirements, in a reproducible way, targeting the maximum performance.
In recent years, resolution adaptation based on deep neural networks has enabled significant performance gains for conventional (2D) video codecs. This paper investigates the effectiveness of spatial resolution resampling in the context of immersive content. The proposed approach reduces the spatial resolution of input multi-view videos before encoding, and reconstructs their original resolution after decoding. During the up-sampling process, an advanced CNN model is used to reduce potential re-sampling, compression, and synthesis artifacts. This work has been fully tested with the TMIV coding…
Image similarity measurement is a common issue in a broad range of applications in image processing, recognition, classification and retrieval. Conventional image similarity measures are often limited to specific applications and cannot be applied in general scenarios. The theory of Kolmogorov complexity provides a universal framework for a generic similarity metric based on information distance between objects. Normalized Information Distance (NID) has been shown to be a valid and universal distance metric applicable in measurement of similarity of any two objects, and has been successfully a…

Mean squared error (MSE) and $\ell_p$ norms have largely dominated the measurement of loss in neural networks due to their simplicity and analytical properties. However, when used to assess visual information loss, these simple norms are not highly consistent with human perception. Here, we propose a different proxy approach to optimize image analysis networks against quantitative perceptual models. Specifically, we construct a proxy network, which mimics the perceptual model while serving as a loss layer of the network. We experimentally demonstrate how this optimization framework can be appli…
To provide users with more realistic visual experiences, videos are developing in the trends of Ultra High Definition (UHD), High Frame Rate (HFR), High Dynamic Range (HDR), Wide Color Gammut (WCG) and high clarity. However, the data amount of videos increases exponentially, which requires high efficiency video compression for storage and network transmission. Perceptually optimized video coding aims to maximize compression efficiency by exploiting visual redundancies. In this paper, we present a broad and systematic survey on perceptually optimized video coding. Firstly, we present problem fo…

Block based motion estimation is integral to inter prediction processes performed in hybrid video codecs. Prevalent block matching based methods that are used to compute block motion vectors (MVs) rely on computationally intensive search procedures. They also suffer from the aperture problem, which can worsen as the block size is reduced. Moreover, the block matching criteria used in typical codecs do not account for the resulting levels of perceptual quality of the motion compensated pictures that are created upon decoding. Towards achieving the elusive goal of perceptually optimized motion e…
In image and video coding applications, distortion has been traditionally measured using mean square error (MSE), which suggests the use of orthogonal transforms, such as the discrete cosine transform (DCT). Perceptual metrics such as Structural Similarity (SSIM) are typically used after encoding, but not tied to the encoding process. In this paper, we consider an alternative framework where the goal is to optimize a weighted MSE metric, where different weights can be assigned to each pixel so as to reflect their relative importance in terms of perceptual image quality. For this purpose, we pr…

Recently, there has been much interest in deep learning techniques to do image compression and there have been claims that several of these produce better results than engineered compression schemes (such as JPEG, JPEG2000 or BPG). A standard way of comparing image compression schemes today is to use perceptual similarity metrics such as PSNR or MS-SSIM (multi-scale structural similarity). This has led to some deep learning techniques which directly optimize for MS-SSIM by choosing it as a loss function. While this leads to a higher MS-SSIM for such techniques, we demonstrate using user studie…
Spatial resolution adaptation is a technique which has often been employed in video compression to enhance coding efficiency. This approach encodes a lower resolution version of the input video and reconstructs the original resolution during decoding. Instead of using conventional up-sampling filters, recent work has employed advanced super-resolution methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to further improve reconstruction quality. These approaches are usually trained to minimise pixel-based losses such as Mean-Squared Error (MSE), despite the fact that this type of loss metric …
We propose a deep learning system for attention-guided dual-layer image compression (AGDL). In the AGDL compression system, an image is encoded into two layers, a base layer and an attention-guided refinement layer. Unlike the existing ROI image compression methods that spend an extra bit budget equally on all pixels in ROI, AGDL employs a CNN module to predict those pixels on and near a saliency sketch within ROI that are critical to perceptual quality. Only the critical pixels are further sampled by compressive sensing (CS) to form a very compact refinement layer. Another novel CNN method is…
Due to the spectral sensitivity phenomenon of the Human Visual System (HVS), the color channels of raw RGB 4:4:4 sequences contain significant psychovisual redundancies; these redundancies can be perceptually quantized. The default quantization systems in the HEVC standard are known as Uniform Reconstruction Quantization (URQ) and Rate Distortion Optimized Quantization (RDOQ); URQ and RDOQ are not perceptually optimized for the coding of RGB 4:4:4 video data. In this paper, we propose a novel spatiotemporal perceptual quantization technique named SPAQ. With application for RGB 4:4:4 video data…

In recent years, video compression techniques have been significantly challenged by the rapidly increased demands associated with high quality and immersive video content. Among various compression tools, post-processing can be applied on reconstructed video content to mitigate visible compression artefacts and to enhance overall perceptual quality. Inspired by advances in deep learning, we propose a new CNN-based post-processing approach, which has been integrated with two state-of-the-art coding standards, VVC and AV1. The results show consistent coding gains on all tested sequences at vario…
In order to be able to deliver today's voluminous amount of video contents through limited bandwidth channels in a perceptually optimal way, it is important to consider perceptual trade-offs of compression and space-time downsampling protocols. In this direction, we have studied and developed new models of natural video statistics (NVS), which are useful because high-quality videos contain statistical regularities that are disturbed by distortions. Specifically, we model the statistics of divisively normalized difference between neighboring frames that are relatively displaced. In an extensive…
We extensively study how to combine Generative Adversarial Networks and learned compression to obtain a state-of-the-art generative lossy compression system. In particular, we investigate normalization layers, generator and discriminator architectures, training strategies, as well as perceptual losses. In contrast to previous work, i) we obtain visually pleasing reconstructions that are perceptually similar to the input, ii) we operate in a broad range of bitrates, and iii) our approach can be applied to high-resolution images. We bridge the gap between rate-distortion-perception theory and pr…
Human perception is at the core of lossy video compression and yet, it is challenging to collect data that is sufficiently dense to drive compression. In perceptual quality assessment, human feedback is typically collected as a single scalar quality score indicating preference of one distorted video over another. In reality, some videos may be better in some parts but not in others. We propose an approach to collecting finer-grained feedback by asking users to use an interactive tool to directly optimize for perceptual quality given a fixed bitrate. To this end, we built a novel web-tool which…
Video shared over the internet is commonly referred to as user generated content (UGC). UGC video may have low quality due to various factors including previous compression. UGC video is uploaded by users, and then it is re-encoded to be made available at various levels of quality. In a traditional video coding pipeline the encoder parameters are optimized to minimize a rate-distortion criterion, but when the input signal has low quality, this results in sub-optimal coding parameters optimized to preserve undesirable artifacts. In this paper we formulate the UGC compression problem as that of …
This paper describes a CNN-based multi-frame post-processing approach based on a perceptually-inspired Generative Adversarial Network architecture, CVEGAN. This method has been integrated with the Versatile Video Coding Test Model (VTM) 15.2 to enhance the visual quality of the final reconstructed content. The evaluation results on the CLIC 2022 validation sequences show consistent coding gains over the original VVC VTM at the same bitrates when assessed by PSNR. The integrated codec has been submitted to the Challenge on Learned Image Compression (CLIC) 2022 (video track), and the team name a…
Video dimensions are continuously increasing to provide more realistic and immersive experiences to global streaming and social media viewers. However, increments in video parameters such as spatial resolution and frame rate are inevitably associated with larger data volumes. Transmitting increasingly voluminous videos through limited bandwidth networks in a perceptually optimal way is a current challenge affecting billions of viewers. One recent practice adopted by video service providers is space-time resolution adaptation in conjunction with video compression. Consequently, it is important …

Transferring large amount of high resolution images over limited bandwidth is an important but very challenging task. Compressing images using extremely low bitrates (<0.1 bpp) has been studied but it often results in low quality images of heavy artifacts due to the strong constraint in the number of bits available for the compressed data. It is often said that a picture is worth a thousand words but on the other hand, language is very powerful in capturing the essence of an image using short descriptions. With the recent success of diffusion models for text-to-image generation, we propose a g…
In many professional fields, such as medicine, remote sensing and sciences, users often demand image compression methods to be mathematically lossless. But lossless image coding has a rather low compression ratio (around 2:1 for natural images). The only known technique to achieve significant compression while meeting the stringent fidelity requirements is the methodology of $\ell_\infty$-constrained coding that was developed and standardized in nineties. We make a major progress in $\ell_\infty$-constrained image coding after two decades, by developing a novel CNN-based soft $\ell_\infty$-con…

Although equirectangular projection (ERP) is a convenient form to store omnidirectional images (also known as 360-degree images), it is neither equal-area nor conformal, thus not friendly to subsequent visual communication. In the context of image compression, ERP will over-sample and deform things and stuff near the poles, making it difficult for perceptually optimal bit allocation. In conventional 360-degree image compression, techniques such as region-wise packing and tiled representation are introduced to alleviate the over-sampling problem, achieving limited success. In this paper, we mak…
In perceptual image coding applications, the main objective is to decrease, as much as possible, Bits Per Pixel (BPP) while avoiding noticeable distortions in the reconstructed image. In this paper, we propose a novel perceptual image coding technique, named Perceptual Color Compression (PCC). PCC is based on a novel model related to Human Visual System (HVS) spectral sensitivity and CIELAB Just Noticeable Color Difference (JNCD). We utilize this modeling to capitalize on the inability of the HVS to perceptually differentiate photons in very similar wavelength bands (e.g., distinguishing very …
Videos often have to be transmitted and stored at low bitrates due to poor network connectivity during adaptive bitrate streaming. Designing optimal bitrate ladders that would select the perceptually-optimized resolution, frame-rate, and compression level for low-bitrate videos for adaptive streaming across the internet is therefore a task of great interest. Towards that end, we conducted the first large-scale study of medium and low-bitrate videos from live sports for two codecs (Elemental AVC and HEVC) and created the Amazon Prime Video Low-Bitrate Sports (APV LBS) dataset. The study involve…

In this paper, we propose a novel variable-rate learned image compression framework with a conditional autoencoder. Previous learning-based image compression methods mostly require training separate networks for different compression rates so they can yield compressed images of varying quality. In contrast, we train and deploy only one variable-rate image compression network implemented with a conditional autoencoder. We provide two rate control parameters, i.e., the Lagrange multiplier and the quantization bin size, which are given as conditioning variables to the network. Coarse rate adaptat…

This paper explores the problem of learning transforms for image compression via autoencoders. Usually, the rate-distortion performances of image compression are tuned by varying the quantization step size. In the case of autoen-coders, this in principle would require learning one transform per rate-distortion point at a given quantization step size. Here, we show that comparable performances can be obtained with a unique learned transform. The different rate-distortion points are then reached by varying the quantization step size at test time. This approach saves a lot of training time.

Recent years have witnessed an increasing interest in end-to-end learned video compression. Most previous works explore temporal redundancy by detecting and compressing a motion map to warp the reference frame towards the target frame. Yet, it failed to adequately take advantage of the historical priors in the sequential reference frames. In this paper, we propose an Advanced Learned Video Compression (ALVC) approach with the in-loop frame prediction module, which is able to effectively predict the target frame from the previously compressed frames, without consuming any bit-rate. The predicte…
The past few years have witnessed increasing interests in applying deep learning to video compression. However, the existing approaches compress a video frame with only a few number of reference frames, which limits their ability to fully exploit the temporal correlation among video frames. To overcome this shortcoming, this paper proposes a Recurrent Learned Video Compression (RLVC) approach with the Recurrent Auto-Encoder (RAE) and Recurrent Probability Model (RPM). Specifically, the RAE employs recurrent cells in both the encoder and decoder. As such, the temporal information in a large ran…
