Videos often have to be transmitted and stored at low bitrates due to poor network connectivity during adaptive bitrate streaming. Designing optimal bitrate ladders that would select the perceptually-optimized resolution, frame-rate, and compression level for low-bitrate videos for adaptive streaming across the internet is therefore a task of great interest. Towards that end, we conducted the first large-scale study of medium and low-bitrate videos from live sports for two codecs (Elemental AVC and HEVC) and created the Amazon Prime Video Low-Bitrate Sports (APV LBS) dataset. The study involved 94 participants and 742 videos, with more than 23,000 human opinion scores collected in total. We analyzed the data obtained and we also conducted an extensive evaluation of objective Video Quality Assessment (VQA) algorithms and benchmarked their performance, and make recommendations on bitrate ladder design. We're making the metadata and VQA features available at https://github.com/JoshuaEbenezer/lbmfr-public.
Video live streaming is gaining prevalence among video streaming services, especially for the delivery of popular sporting events. Many objective Video Quality Assessment (VQA) models have been developed to predict the perceptual quality of videos. Appropriate databases that exemplify the distortions encountered in live streaming videos are important to designing and learning objective VQA models. Towards making progress in this direction, we built a video quality database specifically designed for live streaming VQA research. The new video database is called the Laboratory for Image and Video…
This paper presents the results of a study conducted on the perceptual acceptability of audio-video desynchronization for sports videos. The study was conducted with 45 videos generated by applying 8 audio-video offsets on 5 source contents. 20 subjects participated in the study. The results show that humans are more sensitive to audio-video offset errors for speech stimuli, and the complex events that occur in sports broadcasts have higher thresholds of acceptability. This suggests the tuning of audio-video synchronization requirements in broadcasting to the content of the broadcast.
The diversity of video delivery pipeline poses a grand challenge to the evaluation of adaptive bitrate (ABR) streaming algorithms and objective quality-of-experience (QoE) models. Here we introduce so-far the largest subject-rated database of its kind, namely WaterlooSQoE-IV, consisting of 1350 adaptive streaming videos created from diverse source contents, video encoders, network traces, ABR algorithms, and viewing devices. We collect human opinions for each video with a series of carefully designed subjective experiments. Subsequent data analysis and testing/comparison of ABR algorithms and …
With the growing data consumption of emerging video applications and users requirement for higher resolutions, up to 8K, a huge effort has been made in video compression technologies. Recently, versatile video coding (VVC) has been standardized by the moving picture expert group (MPEG), providing a significant improvement in compression performance over its predecessor high efficiency video coding (HEVC). In this paper, we provide a comparative subjective quality evaluation between VVC and HEVC standards for 8K resolution videos. In addition, we evaluate the perceived quality improvement offer…
Video represents the majority of internet traffic today, driving a continual race between the generation of higher quality content, transmission of larger file sizes, and the development of network infrastructure. In addition, the recent COVID-19 pandemic fueled a surge in the use of video conferencing tools. Since videos take up considerable bandwidth (~100 Kbps to a few Mbps), improved video compression can have a substantial impact on network performance for live and pre-recorded content, providing broader access to multimedia content worldwide. We present a novel video compression pipeline…
Human perception is at the core of lossy video compression and yet, it is challenging to collect data that is sufficiently dense to drive compression. In perceptual quality assessment, human feedback is typically collected as a single scalar quality score indicating preference of one distorted video over another. In reality, some videos may be better in some parts but not in others. We propose an approach to collecting finer-grained feedback by asking users to use an interactive tool to directly optimize for perceptual quality given a fixed bitrate. To this end, we built a novel web-tool which…
Measuring the quality of digital videos viewed by human observers has become a common practice in numerous multimedia applications, such as adaptive video streaming, quality monitoring, and other digital TV applications. Here we explore a significant, yet relatively unexplored problem: measuring perceptual quality on videos arising from both luma and chroma distortions from compression. Toward investigating this problem, it is important to understand the kinds of chroma distortions that arise, how they relate to luma compression distortions, and how they can affect perceived quality. We design…
Measuring Quality of Experience (QoE) and integrating these measurements into video streaming algorithms is a multi-faceted problem that fundamentally requires the design of comprehensive subjective QoE databases and metrics. To achieve this goal, we have recently designed the LIVE-NFLX-II database, a highly-realistic database which contains subjective QoE responses to various design dimensions, such as bitrate adaptation algorithms, network conditions and video content. Our database builds on recent advancements in content-adaptive encoding and incorporates actual network traces to capture re…
The Object-Based Image Coding (OBIC) that was extensively studied about two decades ago, promised a vast application perspective for both ultra-low bitrate communication and high-level semantical content understanding, but it had rarely been used due to the inefficient compact representation of object with arbitrary shape. A fundamental issue behind is how to efficiently process the arbitrary-shaped objects at a fine granularity (e.g., feature element or pixel wise). To attack this, we have proposed to apply the element-wise masking and compression by devising an object segmentation network fo…
In the past decades, lots of progress have been done in the video compression field including traditional video codec and learning-based video codec. However, few studies focus on using preprocessing techniques to improve the rate-distortion performance. In this paper, we propose a rate-perception optimized preprocessing (RPP) method. We first introduce an adaptive Discrete Cosine Transform loss function which can save the bitrate and keep essential high frequency components as well. Furthermore, we also combine several state-of-the-art techniques from low-level vision fields into our approach…

High frame rate (HFR) videos are becoming increasingly common with the tremendous popularity of live, high-action streaming content such as sports. Although HFR contents are generally of very high quality, high bandwidth requirements make them challenging to deliver efficiently, while simultaneously maintaining their quality. To optimize trade-offs between bandwidth requirements and video quality, in terms of frame rate adaptation, it is imperative to understand the intricate relationship between frame rate and perceptual video quality. Towards advancing progression in this direction we design…
By 2022, we expect video traffic to reach 82% of the total internet traffic. Undoubtedly, the abundance of video-driven applications will likely lead internet video traffic percentage to a further increase in the near future, enabled by associate advances in video devices' capabilities. In response to this ever-growing demand, the Alliance for Open Media (AOM) and the Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) have demonstrated strong and renewed interest in developing new video codecs. In the fast-changing video codecs' landscape, there is thus, a genuine need to develop adaptive methods that can be uni…
Due to the spectral sensitivity phenomenon of the Human Visual System (HVS), the color channels of raw RGB 4:4:4 sequences contain significant psychovisual redundancies; these redundancies can be perceptually quantized. The default quantization systems in the HEVC standard are known as Uniform Reconstruction Quantization (URQ) and Rate Distortion Optimized Quantization (RDOQ); URQ and RDOQ are not perceptually optimized for the coding of RGB 4:4:4 video data. In this paper, we propose a novel spatiotemporal perceptual quantization technique named SPAQ. With application for RGB 4:4:4 video data…
Spatial resolution adaptation is a technique which has often been employed in video compression to enhance coding efficiency. This approach encodes a lower resolution version of the input video and reconstructs the original resolution during decoding. Instead of using conventional up-sampling filters, recent work has employed advanced super-resolution methods based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to further improve reconstruction quality. These approaches are usually trained to minimise pixel-based losses such as Mean-Squared Error (MSE), despite the fact that this type of loss metric …
The sport-related concussion (SRC) battery relies heavily upon subjective symptom reporting in order to determine the diagnosis of a concussion. Unfortunately, athletes with SRC may return-to-play (RTP) too soon if they are untruthful of their symptoms. It is critical to provide accurate assessments that can overcome underreporting to prevent further injury. To lower the risk of injury, a more robust and precise method for detecting concussion is needed to produce reliable and objective results. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to detect SRC using long short-term memory (LSTM) recurr…
