The Dual Characteristic-Galerkin method (DCGM) is conservative, precise and experimentally positive. We present the method and prove convergence and $L^2$-stability in the case of Neumann boundary conditions. In a 2D numerical finite element setting (FEM), the method is compared to Primal Characteristic-Galerkin (PCGM), Streamline upwinding (SUPG), the Dual Discontinuous Galerkin method (DDG) and centered FEM without upwinding. DCGM is difficult to implement numerically but, in the numerical context of this note, it is far superior to all others.
This article devises a new primal-dual weak Galerkin finite element method for the convection-diffusion equation. Optimal order error estimates are established for the primal-dual weak Galerkin approximations in various discrete norms and the standard $L^2$ norms. A series of numerical experiments are conducted and reported to verify the theoretical findings.
A new primal-dual weak Galerkin (PDWG) finite element method is introduced and analyzed for the ill-posed elliptic Cauchy problems with ultra-low regularity assumptions on the exact solution. The Euler-Lagrange formulation resulting from the PDWG scheme yields a system of equations involving both the primal equation and the adjoint (dual) equation. The optimal order error estimate for the primal variable in a low regularity assumption is established. A series of numerical experiments are illustrated to validate effectiveness of the developed theory.
In this article, the authors present a new $L^p$- primal-dual weak Galerkin method ($L^p$-PDWG) for convection-diffusion equations with $p>1$. The existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution is discussed, and an optimal-order error estimate is derived in the $L^q$-norm for the primal variable, where $\frac 1p+\frac 1q=1$. Furthermore, error estimates are established for the numerical approximation of the dual variable in the standard $W^{m,p}$ norm, $0\le m\le 2$. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed $L^p$-PDWG method.
A new primal-dual weak Galerkin (PD-WG) finite element method was developed and analyzed in this article for first-order linear convection equations in non-divergence form. The PD-WG method results in a symmetric discrete system involving not only the original equation for the primal variable, but also the dual/adjoint equation for the dual variable (also known as Lagrangian multiplier). Optimal order of error estimates in various discrete Sobolev norms are derived for the numerical solutions arising from the PD-WG scheme. Numerical results are produced and reported to illustrate the accuracy …
This article introduces a new primal-dual weak Galerkin (PDWG) finite element method for second order elliptic interface problems with ultra-low regularity assumptions on the exact solution and the interface and boundary data. It is proved that the PDWG method is stable and accurate with optimal order of error estimates in discrete and Sobolev norms. In particular, the error estimates are derived under the low regularity assumption of $u\in H^δ(Ω)$ for $δ> \frac12$ for the exact solution $u$. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted to provide numerical solutions that verify the efficienc…
We design and analyze a new adaptive stabilized finite element method. We construct a discrete approximation of the solution in a continuous trial space by minimizing the residual measured in a dual norm of a discontinuous test space that has inf-sup stability. We formulate this residual minimization as a stable saddle-point problem which delivers a stabilized discrete solution and a residual representation that drives the adaptive mesh refinement. Numerical results on an advection-reaction model problem show competitive error reduction rates when compared to discontinuous Galerkin methods on …
A simplified primal-dual weak Galerkin (S-PDWG) finite element method is designed for the Fokker-Planck type equation with non-smooth diffusion tensor and drift vector. The discrete system resulting from S-PDWG method has significantly fewer degrees of freedom compared with the one resulting from the PDWG method proposed by Wang-Wang \cite{WW-fp-2018}. Furthermore, the condition number of the S-PDWG method is smaller than the PDWG method \cite{WW-fp-2018} due to the introduction of a new stabilizer, which provides a potential for designing fast algorithms. Optimal order error estimates for the…
We propose a goal-oriented mesh-adaptive algorithm for a finite element method stabilized via residual minimization on dual discontinuous-Galerkin norms. By solving a saddle-point problem, this residual minimization delivers a stable continuous approximation to the solution on each mesh instance and a residual projection onto a broken polynomial space, which is a robust error estimator to minimize the discrete energy norm via automatic mesh refinement. In this work, we propose and analyze a goal-oriented adaptive algorithm for this stable residual minimization. We solve the primal and adjoint …
This paper presents a new $L^p$-primal-dual weak Galerkin (PDWG) finite element method for the div-curl system with the normal boundary condition for $p>1$. Two crucial features for the proposed $L^p$-PDWG finite element scheme are as follows: (1) it offers an accurate and reliable numerical solution to the div-curl system under the low $W^{α, p}$-regularity ($α>0$) assumption for the exact solution; (2) it offers an effective approximation of the normal harmonic vector fields on domains with complex topology. An optimal order error estimate is established in the $L^q$-norm for the primal vari…
A modified primal-dual weak Galerkin (M-PDWG) finite element method is designed for the second order elliptic equation in non-divergence form. Compared with the existing PDWG methods proposed in \cite{wwnondiv}, the system of equations resulting from the M-PDWG scheme could be equivalently simplified into one equation involving only the primal variable by eliminating the dual variable (Lagrange multiplier). The resulting simplified system thus has significantly fewer degrees of freedom than the one resulting from existing PDWG scheme. In addition, the condition number of the simplified system …
In this article we consider the numerical approximation of the convection-diffusion-reaction equation. One of the main challenges of designing a numerical method for this problem is that boundary layers occurring in the convection-dominated case can lead to non-physical oscillations in the numerical approximation, often referred to as Gibbs phenomena. The idea of this article is to consider the approximation problem as a residual minimization in dual norms in Lq-type Sobolev spaces, with 1 < q < $\infty$. We then apply a non-standard, non-linear PetrovGalerkin discretization, that is applicabl…
In this paper, we propose a numerical method for turning point problems in one dimension based on Petrov-Galerkin finite element method (PGFEM). We first give a priori estimate for the turning point problem with a single boundary turning point. Then we use PGFEM to solve it, where test functions are the solutions to piecewise approximate dual problems. We prove that our method has a first-order convergence rate in both $L^\infty$ norm and an energy norm when we select the exact solutions to dual problems as test functions. Numerical results show that our scheme is efficient for turning point p…
In this paper, we show that the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the spectral discretisation matrices resulted from the Legendre dual-Petrov-Galerkin (LDPG) method for the $m$th-order initial value problem (IVP): $u^{(m)}(t)=σu(t),\, t\in (-1,1)$ with constant $σ\not=0$ and usual initial conditions at $t=-1,$ are associated with the generalised Bessel polynomials (GBPs). The essential idea of the analysis is to properly construct the basis functions for the solution and its dual spaces so that the matrix of the $m$th derivative is an identity matrix, and the mass matrix is then identical or app…

A singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem, posed on the unit square in $\mathbb{R}^2$, is studied; its solution has both exponential and characteristic boundary layers. The problem is solved numerically using the local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) method on Shishkin meshes. Using tensor-product piecewise polynomials of degree at most $k>0$ in each variable, the error between the LDG solution and the true solution is proved to converge, uniformly in the singular perturbation parameter, at a rate of $O((N^{-1}\ln N)^{k+1/2})$ in an associated energy norm, where $N$ is the number of mesh…

Two numerical methods with graded temporal grids are analyzed for fractional evolution equations. One is a low-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization in the case of fractional order $0<α<1$, and the other one is a low-order Petrov Galerkin (PG) discretization in the case of fractional order $1<α<2$. By a new duality technique, pointwise-in-time error estimates of first-order and $ (3-α) $-order temporal accuracies are respectively derived for DG and PG, under reasonable regularity assumptions on the initial value. Numerical experiments are performed to verify the theoretical results.
We deal with the numerical solution of the compressible Euler equations with the aid of the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method with focus on the goal-oriented error estimates and adaptivity. We analyze the adjoint consistency of the DG scheme where the dual problem is not formulated by the differentiation of the DG form and the target functional but using a suitable linearization of the nonlinear forms. Further, we present the goal-oriented anisotropic $hp$-mesh adaptation technique for the Euler equations. The theoretical results are supported by numerical experiments.
We propose an Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL) Runge-Kutta (RK) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for wave equations. The method is designed based on the ELDG method for transport problems [J. Comput. Phy. 446: 110632, 2021.], which tracks solution along approximations to characteristics in the DG framework, allowing extra large time stepping sizes with stability. The wave equation can be written as a first order hyperbolic system. Considering each characteristic family, a straightforward application of ELDG will be to transform to the characteristic variables, evolve them on associated characteristi…
A new high order accurate staggered semi-implicit space-time discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is presented for the simulation of viscous incompressible flows on unstructured triangular grids in two space dimensions. The staggered DG scheme defines the discrete pressure on the primal triangular mesh, while the discrete velocity is defined on a staggered edge-based dual quadrilateral mesh. In this paper, a new pair of equal-order-interpolation velocity-pressure finite elements is proposed. On the primary triangular mesh (the pressure elements) the basis functions are piecewise polynomials of d…
We present a general framework to compute upper and lower bounds for linear-functional outputs of the exact solutions of the Poisson equation based on reconstructions of the field variable and flux for both the primal and adjoint problems. The method is devised from a generalization of the complementary energy principle and the duality theory. Using duality theory, the computation of bounds is reduced to finding independent potential and equilibrated flux reconstructions. A generalization of this result is also introduced, allowing to derive alternative guaranteed bounds from nearly-arbitrary …

This article presents a new primal-dual weak Galerkin method for second order elliptic equations in non-divergence form. The new method is devised as a constrained $L^p$-optimization problem with constraints that mimic the second order elliptic equation by using the discrete weak Hessian locally on each element. An equivalent min-max characterization is derived to show the existence and uniqueness of the numerical solution. Optimal order error estimates are established for the numerical solution under the discrete $W^{2,p}$ norm, as well as the standard $W^{1,p}$ and $L^p$ norms. An equivalent…
In this paper, we present optimal error estimates of the local discontinuous Galerkin method with generalized numerical fluxes for one-dimensional nonlinear convection-diffusion systems. The upwind-biased flux with adjustable numerical viscosity for the convective term is chosen based on the local characteristic decomposition, which is helpful in resolving discontinuities of degenerate parabolic equations without enforcing any limiting procedure. For the diffusive term, a pair of generalized alternating fluxes are considered. By constructing and analyzing generalized Gauss-Radau projections wi…
In this paper, a decoupled characteristic Galerkin finite element procedure is provided for simulating growth-mediated autochemotactic pattern formation in self-propelling bacteria. In this procedure, a modified characteristic Galerkin method is established to solve the bacterial density equation, while the classical finite element procedure is considered for the self-secreted chemical density and polarization dynamics equations system. The convergence of this proposed method is considered under some regularity assumptions and the corresponding error estimate is derived. Numerical experiments …
