The crease flow, replacing the Hamiltonian system used for the evolution of crease sets on black hole horizons, is introduced and its bifurcation properties for null hypersurfaces are discussed. We state the conditions of nondegeneracy and typicality for the crease submanifolds, and find their normal forms and versal unfoldings (codimension 3). The allowed boundary singularities are thus prescribed by the Arnold-Kazaryan-Shcherbak theorem for 3-parameter versal families, and hence identified as swallowtails and Whitney umbrellas of particular kinds. We further present the bifurcation diagrams describing crease evolution at the crossings of the bifurcation sets and elsewhere, and a typical example is studied. Some remarks on the connection of these results to the crease evolution on black hole horizons are also given.
A general geometric construction of a generic null hypersurface in presence of torsion in the spacetime (Riemann-Cartan background), generated by a null vector $l^a$, is being developed here. We then explicitly define and structure various corresponding kinematical quantities. The dynamics of the null surface, particularly given by $\hat{G}_{ab}k^al^b$, is also discussed. The later one is constructed under the {\it geodesic constraint} condition. This yields a relation among the rate of change of expansion scalar corresponding to auxiliary null vector $k^a$ and various kinematical entities on …
Recently it was discovered that null hypersurfaces can develop caustics outside the event horizon of super-entropic Kerr-AdS black holes, in contrast to the usual Kerr-AdS case. In this work we explore a few more examples of black hole spacetimes in which such exterior caustics can develop. If a closed null curve is present, e.g., in the case of Taub-NUT and the "transunital" Kerr-AdS spacetimes, then it coincides with a null hypersurface caustic (NHC) of a minimal separation parameter. Thus a spacetime on the verge of forming closed timelike curves could develop a caustic. Known examples of s…
We use the general theory of local conservation laws for arbitrary partial differential equations to provide a geometric framework for conservation laws on characteristic null hypersurfaces. The operator of interest is the wave operator on general four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds restricted on a null hypersurface.
We apply Cartan's method of equivalence to construct invariants of a given null hypersurface in a Lorentzian space-time. This enables us to fully classify the internal geometry of such surfaces and hence solve the local equivalence problem for null hypersurface structures in 4-dimensional Lorentzian space-times.
In this work the matching of a LTB interior solution representing dust matter to the Vaidya exterior solution describing null fluid through a null hypersurface is studied. Different cases in which one is able to smoothly match these two solutions to Einstein equations along a null hypesurface are discussed.
We review some basic natural geometric objects on null hypersurfaces. Gauss-Codazzi constraints are given in terms of the analog of canonical ADM momentum which is a well defined tensor density on the null surface. Bondi cones are analyzed with the help of this object.
We obtain a charged, rotating and accelerating black hole solution in the $f(R)$ gravity and calculate thermodynamic quantities of the black hole in the slow acceleration regime. We then find that the black hole can be super-entropic in a certain condition. After investigating the null hypersurface of the black hole, we show that there exist super-entropic black holes whose null hypersurface caustics only form inside the Cauchy horizon.
A black hole is superentropic if it violates the reverse isoperimetric inequality. Recently, some studies have indicated that some four dimensional superentropic black holes have the null hypersurface caustics (NHC) outside their event horizons. In this paper, we extend to explore whether or not the NHC exists in the cases of high dimensional superentropic black holes. We consider the singly rotating Kerr-AdS superentropic black holes in arbitrary dimensions and the singly rotating charged superentropic black hole in five-dimensional minimal gauged supergravity, and find that the NHC exists ou…
A maximum principle for C^0 null hypersurfaces is obtained and used to derive a splitting theorem for spacetimes which contain null lines. As a consequence of this null splitting theorem, it is proved that an asymptotically simple vacuum (Ricci flat) spacetime which contains a null line is isometric to Minkowski space.
We study hypersurfaces with prescribed null expansion in an initial data set. We propose a notion of stability and prove a topology theorem. Eichmair's Perron approach toward the existence of marginally outer trapped surface adapts to the settings of hypersurfaces with prescribed null expansion with only minor modifications.
We show that the power-law decay modes found in linear perturbations of Schwarzschild black holes, generally called tails, do not produce caustics on a naturally defined family of null surfaces in the neighborhood of i+ of a black hole horizon.
The Brown-York stress tensor provides a means for defining quasilocal gravitational charges in subregions bounded by a timelike hypersurface. We consider the generalization of this stress tensor to null hypersurfaces. Such a stress tensor can be derived from the on-shell subregion action of general relativity associated with a Dirichlet variational principle, which fixes an induced Carroll structure on the null boundary. The formula for the mixed-index tensor $T{}^i{}_j$ takes a remarkably simple form that is manifestly independent of the choice of auxiliary null vector at the null surface, an…
This paper studies the application of multimomentum maps to the constraint analysis of general relativity on null hypersurfaces. It is shown that, unlike the case of spacelike hypersurfaces, some constraints which are second class in the Hamiltonian formalism turn out to contribute to the multimomentum map. To recover the whole set of secondary constraints found in the Hamiltonian formalism, it is necessary to combine the multimomentum map with those particular Euler-Lagrange equations which are not of evolutionary type. The analysis is performed on the outgoing null cone only.
For many purposes, a three-dimensional foliation of spacetime is more advantageous to understanding its light cone structure. We derive the equations describing such foliations for the Kerr geometry with non-zero cosmological constant, and show that they reduce to null hypersurfaces in vacuum (anti-)de Sitter spacetime in the limit of zero mass. Furthermore, we find that these null hypersurfaces are free of caustics everywhere for $r>0$. Our construction has applications in numerical studies of rotating black holes, and in defining Kruskal coordinates for rotating black holes with non-zero cos…
We revisit Winicour's affine-null metric initial value formulation of General Relativity, where the characteristic initial value formulation is set up with a null metric having two affine parameters. In comparison to past work, where the application of the formulation was aimed for the timelike-null initial value problem, we consider here a boundary surface that is a null hypersurface. All of the initial data are either metric functions or first derivatives of the metric. Given such a set of initial data, Einstein equations can be integrated in a hierarchical manner, where first a set of equat…
Matching of a LTB metric representing dust matter to a background FRW universe across a null hypersurface is studied. In general, an unrestricted matching is possible only if the background FRW is flat or open. There is in general no gravitational impulsive wave present on the null hypersurface which is shear-free and expanding. Special cases of the vanishing pressure or energy density on the hypersurface is discussed. In the case of vanishing energy momentum tensor of the null hypersurface, i.e. in the case of a null boundary, it turns out that all possible definitions of the Hubble parameter…
In this paper we consider introducing careful regularization in the quantization of Maxwell theory in the asymptotic null infinity. This allows systematic discussions of the commutators in various boundary conditions, and application of Dirac brackets accordingly in a controlled manner. This method is most useful when we consider asymptotic charges that are not localized at the boundary $u\to \pm \infty$ like large gauge transformations. We show that our method reproduces the operator algebra in known cases, and it can be applied to other space-time symmetry charges such as the BMS transformat…
The isolated horizon formalism recently introduced by Ashtekar et al. aims at providing a quasi-local concept of a black hole in equilibrium in an otherwise possibly dynamical spacetime. In this formalism, a hierarchy of geometrical structures is constructed on a null hypersurface. On the other side, the 3+1 formulation of general relativity provides a powerful setting for studying the spacetime dynamics, in particular gravitational radiation from black hole systems. Here we revisit the kinematics and dynamics of null hypersurfaces by making use of some 3+1 slicing of spacetime. In particular,…
The dynamical evolution of the Hajicek $1$-form is derived in Einstein-Cartan (EC) theory. We find that like Einstein theory of gravity, the evolution equation is related to a projected part of the Einstein tensor $(\hat{G}_{ab})$ on a generic null surface $\mathcal{H}$, particularly $\hat{G}_{ab}l^a q^b_{~c}$, where $l^a$ and $q^a_{~c}$ are the outgoing null generators of $\mathcal{H}$ and the induced metric to a transverse spatial cross-section of $\mathcal{H}$ respectively. Under the {\it geodesic constraint} a possible fluid interpretation of this evolution equation is then proposed. We fi…
The study of gravitational waves in the presence of a cosmological constant has led to interesting forms of the de Sitter and anti-de Sitter line elements based on families of null hypersurfaces. The forms are interesting because they focus attention on the geometry of null hypersurfaces in space-times of constant curvature. Two examples are worked out in some detail. The first originated in the study of collisions of impulsive gravitational waves in which the post-collision space-time is a solution of Einstein's field equations with a cosmological constant, and the second originated in the ge…
The spherically symmetric null hypersurfaces in a Schwarzschild spacetime are smooth away from the singularities and foliate the spacetime. We prove the existence of more general foliations by null hypersurfaces without the spherical symmetry condition. In fact we also relax the spherical symmetry of the ambient spacetime and prove a more general result: in a perturbed Schwarzschild spacetime (not necessary being vacuum), nearly round null hypersurfaces can be extended regularly to the past null infinity, thus there exist many foliations by regular null hypersurfaces in the exterior region of …
We consider field quantization on an arbitrary null hypersurface in curved spacetime. We discuss the de Sitter horizon as the simplest example, relating the horizon quantization to the standard Fock space in the cosmological patch. We stress the universality of null-hypersurface kinematics, using it to generalize the Unruh effect to vacuum or thermal states with respect to null "time translations" on arbitrary (e.g. non-stationary) horizons. Finally, we consider a general pure state on a null hypersurface, which is divided into past and future halves, as when a bifurcation surface divides an e…
The degenerate nature of the metric on null hypersurfaces makes it difficult to define a covariant derivative on null submanifolds. Recent approaches using decomposition to define a covariant derivative on null hypersurfaces are investigated, with examples demonstrating the limitations of the methods. Motivated by Geroch's work on asymptotically flat spacetimes, conformal transformations are used to construct a covariant derivative on null hypersurfaces, and a condition on the Ricci tensor is given to determine when this construction can be used. Several examples are given, including the const…
We introduce a new elliptic operator on null hypersurfaces of four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds. This operator depends on the first and second fundamental forms of the sections of a foliation of the null hypersurface and its novelty originates from its covariant transformation under change of foliation. It thus provides at any point an elliptic structure intimately connected with the geometry of the null hypersurface, independent of the choice of a specific section through that point. No analytic or algebraic symmetries or other conditions are imposed on the metric. The spectral properties…
The outward-pointing principal null direction of the Schwarzschild Riemann tensor is null hypersurface-forming. If the Schwarzschild mass spontaneously jumps across one such hypersurface then the hypersurface is the history of an outgoing light-like shell. The outward-- pointing principal null direction of the Kerr Riemann tensor is asymptotically (in the neighbourhood of future null infinity) null hypersurface-forming. If the Kerr parameters of mass and angular momentum spontaneously jump across one such asymptotic hypersurface then the asymptotic hypersurface is shown to be the history of an…
For an $(m+1)$-dimensional space-time $(X^{m+1}, g),$ define a mapped null hypersurface to be a smooth map $ν:N^{m}\to X^{m+1}$ (that is not necessarily an immersion) such that there exists a smooth field of null lines along $ν$ that are both tangent and $g$-orthogonal to $ν.$ We study relations between mapped null hypersurfaces and Legendrian maps to the spherical cotangent bundle $ST^*M$ of an immersed spacelike hypersurface $μ:M^m\to X^{m+1}.$ We show that a Legendrian map $\wt λ: L^{m-1}\to (ST^*M)^{2m-1}$ defines a mapped null hypersurface in $X.$ On the other hand, the intersection of a …
It is shown that Kundt's metric for vacuum cannot be constructed when two-dimensional space-like sections of null hypersurfaces are compact, connected manifolds with no boundary unless they are tori or spheres, i.e. higher genus $\mathbf{g} \geq 2$ is excluded by vacuum Einstein equations. The so-called {\em basic equation} (resulting from Einstein equations) is examined. This is a non-linear PDE for unknown covector field and unknown Riemannian structure on the two-dimensional manifold. It implies several important results derived in this paper. It arises not only for Kundt's class but also f…

Restrictions are obtained on the topology of a compact divergence-free null hypersurface in a four-dimensional Lorentzian manifold whose Ricci tensor is zero or satisfies some weaker conditions. This is done by showing that each null hypersurface of this type can be used to construct a family of three-dimensional Riemannian metrics which collapses with bounded curvature and applying known results on the topology of manifolds which collapse. The result is then applied to general relativity, where it implies a restriction on the topology of smooth compact Cauchy horizons in spacetimes with vario…
We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of "conservation laws" on null hypersurfaces for the wave equation on general four-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds. Examples of null hypersurfaces exhibiting such conservation laws include the standard null cones of Minkowski spacetime and the degenerate horizons of extremal black holes. Another (limiting) example of such a conservation law is that which gives rise to the well-known Newman-Penrose constants along the null infinity of asymptotically flat spacetimes. The existence of such conservation laws can be viewed as an obstr…
Using the principle of least action, the motion equations for a singular hypersurface of arbitrary type in quadratic gravity are derived. Equations containing the "external pressure" and the "external flow" components of the surface energy-momentum tensor together with the Lichnerowicz conditions serve to find the hypersurface itself, while the remaining ones define arbitrary functions that arise due to the implicit presence of the delta function derivative. It turns out that neither double layers nor thin shells exist for the quadratic Gauss-Bonnet term. It is shown that there is no "external…
The stress-energy tensor of a matter shell whose history coincides with a null hypersurface in the Einstein-Cartan gravity is revisited. It is demonstrated that with a proper choice for the torsion discontinuity taken to be orthogonal to the null hypersurface and consistent with the antisymmetric property of torsion tensor, the modified expression for the asymmetric stress-energy tensor is automatically tangent to the hypersurface. The main differences with respect to a previous work are addressed
A three-dimensional light-like foliation of a spacetime geometry is one particular way of studying its light cone structure and has important applications in numerical relativity. In this paper, we execute such a foliation for the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole geometry and compare it with the lightlike foliations of the Kerr-AdS and Kerr-Newman black holes. We derive the equations that govern this slicing and study their properties. In particular, we find that these null hypersurfaces develop caustics inside the inner horizon of the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole, in strong contrast to the Kerr-AdS c…
The common intrinsic geometry shared by all the null hypersurfaces gives rise to the asymptotic symmetries found on the null infinities $\mathscr I^\pm$ and the isolated horizons $Δ$. In this work, the properties of a null hypersurface are reviewed and the invariance of its intrinsic geometry ($n^an^bh_{ab}$) is revealed under the spacetime conformal transformation. The generators, i.e., infinitesimal symmetries, of the conformal transformation tangent to the null hypersurface are defined and classified by their effects on the induced metric and the normal vector field. Two particular examples…
We present the argument that the past limit of the Trautman-Bondi mass is the ADM mass under weak hypotheses on the decay of the metric towards spatial infinity, without any smallness conditions on the initial data, assuming well defined energy, momentum, center of mass and angular moment. Part of the proof consists of a careful inspection of the proof of stability of Minkowski space-time, which is sketched. This is complemented by an interior gluing result for asymptotically flat initial data with well defined Poincaré charges, which is proved in detail.
In this work we obtain the limit of the Hawking energy of a large class of foliations along general null hypersurfaces $Ω$ satisfying a weak notion of asymptotic flatness. The foliations are not required to be either geodesic or approaching large spheres at infinity. The limit is obtained in terms of a reference background geodesic foliation approaching large spheres and a positive function, constant along the null generators on $Ω$, which describes the relation between the two foliations at infinity. The integrand in the limit expression has interesting covariance and invariance properties wi…
A field theory on a three-dimensional manifold is introduced, whose field equations are the constraint equations for general relativity on a three-dimensional null hypersurface. The underlying boundary action consists of two copies of the dressed Chern-Simons term for self-dual Ashtekar variables, a kinetic term for the null flag at the boundary plus additional junction conditions for the spin coefficients across the interface. In fact, there is a doubling of the field content, because the null hypersurface will be considered as an internal boundary between two adjacent slabs of spacetime. The…
