最近得到的特殊Buchdahl启发度规[Phys. Rev. Phys.
The recently obtained $\textit{special}$ Buchdahl-inspired metric [Phys. Rev. D 107, 104008 (2023)] describes asymptotically flat spacetimes in pure Ricci-squared gravity. The metric depends on a new (Buchdahl) parameter $\tilde{k}$ of higher-derivative characteristic, and reduces to the Schwarzschild metric, for $\tilde{k}=0$. For the case $\tilde{k}\in(-1,0)$, it was shown that it describes a traversable Morris-Thorne-Buchdahl (MTB) wormhole [Eur. Phys. J. C 83, 626 (2023)], where the weak energy condition is formally violated. In this paper, we briefly review the $\textit{special}$ Buchdahl-inspired metric, with focuses on the construction of $ζ-$Kruskal-Szekeres (KS) diagram and the situation for a wormhole to emerge. Interestingly, the MTB wormhole structure appears to permit the formation of closed timelike curves (CTCs). More specifically, a CTC straddles the throat, comprising of two segments positioned in opposite quadrants of the $ζ-$KS diagram. The closed timelike loop thus passes through the wormhole throat twice, causing $\textit{two}$ reversals in the time direction experienced by the (timelike) traveller on the CTC. The key to constructing a CTC lies in identifying any given pair of antipodal points $(T,X)$ and $(-T,-X)$ $\textit{on the wormhole throat}$ in the $ζ-$KS diagram as corresponding to the same spacetime event. It is interesting to note that the Campanelli-Lousto metric in Brans-Dicke gravity is known to support two-way traversable wormholes, and the formation of the CTCs presented herein is equally applicable to the Campanelli-Lousto solution.
The semiclassical approximation takes into account the gravitational contribution of zero-point energies. We model this contribution via the renormalized stress-energy tensor (RSET) of a massless scalar field, which we compute in a cutoff-regularized version of the Polyakov approximation. When the field is in the Boulware vacuum state (the natural vacuum for stellar geometries), the RSET works in favor of violating the Buchdahl compactness limit. We review the family of classical constant-density stellar solutions, paying particular attention to the notion of criticality -- the presence of off…
We generalise the Buchdahl-Bondi limit for the case of static, spherically symmetric, relativistic compact stars immersed in Schwarzschild vacuum in f(R)-theory of gravity, subject to very generic regularity, thermodynamic stability and matching conditions. Similar to the case of general relativity, our result is model independent and remains true for any physically realistic equation of state of standard stellar matter. We show that an extra-massive stable star can exist in these theories, with surface redshift larger than 2, which is forbidden in general relativity. This result gives a novel…
In d+1 dimensions we solve the equations of motion for the case of gravity minimally or conformally coupled to a scalar field. For the minimally coupled system the equations can either be solved directly or by transforming vacuum solutions, as shown before in 3+1 dimensions by Buchdahl. In d+1 dimensions the solutions have been previously found directly by Xanthopoulos and Zannias. Here we first rederive these earlier results, and then extend Buchdahl's method of transforming vacuum solutions to d+1 dimensions. We also review the conformal coupling case, in which d+1 dimensional solutions can …
The problem of singularities associated with Dirac strings and closed timelike curves in classical solutions of pure gravity is analyzed here. A method to eliminate these is introduced and established first for the Taub-NUT geometry. This is superceded by a smooth solution of first order field equations, which is defined to be a unique extension of the Taub Universe to a degenerate metric phase. As an additional feature, this framework naturally provides a geometric interpretation of the magnetic charge in the context of gravity theory without matter. Finally, exploiting the two phases of the …
We show that timelike maximal cylinders in $\RR^{1 + 2}$ always develop singularities in finite time and that, infinitesimally at a generic singularity, their time slices are evolved by a rigid motion or a self-similar motion. We also prove a mild generalization in non-flat backgrounds.
We present an axially symmetric, asymptotically flat empty space solution of the Einstein field equations containing a naked singularity. The spacetime is regular everywhere except on the symmetry axis where it possess a true curvature singularity. The spacetime is of type D in the Petrov classification scheme and is locally isometric to the metrics of case IV in the Kinnersley classification of type D vacuum metrics. Additionally, the spacetime also shows the evolution of closed timelike curves (CTCs) from an initial hypersurface free from CTCs.
Moitvated in part by [3], in this note we obtain a rigidity result for globally hyperbolic vacuum spacetimes in arbitrary dimension that admit a timelike conformal Killing vector field. Specifically, we show that if M is a Ricci flat, timelike geodesically complete spacetime with compact Cauchy surfaces that admits a timelike conformal Killing field X, then M must split as a metric product, and X must be Killing. This gives a partial proof of the Bartnik splitting conjecture in the vacuum setting.
We present a new asymptotically-flat time-machine model made solely of vacuum and dust. The spacetime evolves from a regular spacelike initial hypersurface S and subsequently develops closed timelike curves. The initial hypersurface S is asymptotically flat and topologically trivial. The chronology violation occurs in a compact manner; namely the first closed causal curves form at the boundary of the future domain of dependence of a compact region in S (the core). This central core is empty, and so is the external asymptotically flat region. The intermediate region surrounding the core (the en…
We study the dynamics of the vacuum Bianchi IX model with timelike singularity and compare it with the dynamics of the Bianchi IX model with cosmological singularity. We show that differences in the signs of some terms in the set of equations specifying the dynamics of both spacetimes lead to significant differences in their properties.
We present a topologically trivial, non-vacuum solution of the Einstein's field equations in four-dimensions, which is regular everywhere. The metric admits circular closed timelike curves, which appear beyond the null curve, and these timelike curves are linearly stable under linear perturbations. Additionally, the spacetime admits null geodesics curve which are not closed, and the metric is of type D in the Petrov classification scheme. The stress-energy tensor anisotropic fluid satisfy the different energy conditions and a generalization of Equation-of-State parameter of perfect fluid $p=ω\…
In the present article we find a new class of solutions of Einstein's field equations. It describes stationary, cylindrically symmetric spacetimes with closed timelike geodesics everywhere outside the symmetry axis. These spacetimes contain a magnetic field parallel to the axis, a perfect fluid with constant density and pressure, and Lorentz invariant vacuum with energy density represented by a negative cosmological constant.
We construct a large class of vacuum solutions of the Einstein equations without any symmetries and with controlled asymptotics near a timelike singularity. The solutions are obtained by a Fuchs analysis of the equations which evolve the metric in a spacelike direction. We further observe that the changes of signs of some of the terms (walls) in the associated Hamiltonian invalidate the "cosmological billards" heuristic arguments for existence of singularities of mixmaster type in the current context.
A 1/2-BPS family of time dependent plane wave spacetimes which give rise to exactly solvable string backgrounds is presented. In particular a solution which interpolates between Minkowski spacetime and the maximally supersymmetric homogeneous plane wave along a timelike direction is analyzed. We work in d=4, N=2 supergravity, but the results can be easily extended to d=10,11. The conformal boundary of a particular class of solutions is studied.
The (twice-contracted) second Bianchi identity is a differential curvature identity that holds on any smooth manifold with a metric. In the case when such a metric is Lorentzian and solves Einstein's equations with an (in this case inevitably smooth) energy-momentum-stress tensor of a "matter field" as the source of spacetime curvature, this identity implies the physical laws of energy and momentum conservation for the "matter field". The present work inquires into whether such a Bianchi identity can still hold in a weak sense for spacetimes with curvature singularities associated with timelik…
Recently the Petrov type I condition is introduced to reduce the degrees of freedom in the extrinsic curvature of a timelike hypersurface to the degrees of freedom in the dual Rindler fluid in Einstein gravity. In this paper we show that the Petrov type I condition holds for the solutions of vacuum Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity up to the second order in the relativistic hydrodynamic expansion. On the other hand, if imposing the Petrov type I condition and Hamiltonian constraint on a finite cutoff hypersurface, the stress tensor of the relativistic Rindler fluid in vacuum Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet …
We describe a solitonic solution-generating technique for the five-dimensional General Relativity. Reducing the five-dimensional problem to the four-dimensional one, we can systematically obtain single-rotational axially symmetric vacuum solutions. Applying the technique for a simple seed solution, we have previously obtained the series of stationary solutions which includes $S^2$-rotating black ring. We analyze the qualitative features of these solutions, e.g., conical singularities, closed timelike curves, and spacetime curvatures. We investigate the rod structures of seed and solitonic solu…
So-called "twisted" black holes have recently been proposed by Zhang (1609.09721 [gr-qc]), and further considered by Chen and Jing (1610.00886 [gr-qc]), and more recently by Ong (1610.05757 [gr-qc]). While these spacetimes are certainly Ricci-flat, and so mathematically satisfy the vacuum Einstein equations, they are also merely minor variants on Taub--NUT spacetimes. Consequently they exhibit several unphysical features that make them quite unreasonable as realistic astrophysical objects. Specifically, these "twisted" black holes are not (globally) asymptotically flat. Furthermore, they conta…
We show that Petrov type I vacuum solutions admitting a Killing vector whose Papapetrou field is aligned with a principal bivector of the Weyl tensor are the Kasner and Taub metrics, their counterpart with timelike orbits and their associated windmill-like solutions, as well as the Petrov homogeneous vacuum solution. We recover all these metrics by using an integration method based on an invariant classification which allows us to characterize every solution. In this way we obtain an intrinsic and explicit algorithm to identify them.
It is shown that in a classical spacetime with multiply connected space slices having the topology of a torus, closed timelike curves are also formed. We call these spacetime ringholes. Two regions on the torus surface can be distinguished which are separated by angular horizons. On one of such regions (that which surrounds the maximum circumference of the torus) everything happens like in spherical wormholes, but the other region (the rest of the torus surface), while still possessing a chronology horizon and non-chronal region, behaves like a coverging, rather than diverging, lens and corres…
A free-theory vacuum state of an interacting field theory, e.g. quantum gravity, is unstable at tree level in general due to spontaneous emission of Fock-space particles in any spacetime with no global timelike Killing vectors, such as de Sitter spacetime, in the interaction picture. As an example, the rate of spontaneous emission of Fock-space particles is calculated in phi^4 theory in de Sitter spacetime. It is possible that this apparent spontaneous emission does not correspond to any physical processes because the states are not evolved by the true Hamiltonian in the interaction picture. N…
We investigate a new class of twisting type N vacuum solutions with nonzero (positive) cosmological constant Lambda by studying the equations of geodesic deviations along the privileged radial timelike geodesics, generalizing J. Bicak and J. Podolsky's results on non-twisting type N solutions. It is shown that these twisting radiative spacetimes can be interpreted as exact transverse gravitational waves propagating in the de-Sitter universe, with a distinctive feature that all the wave amplitudes are proportional to Lambda (dark energy/matter source coupling). Moveover, we demonstrate the cosm…
Vacuum asymptotically flat Robinson-Trautman spacetimes are a well known class of spacetimes exhibiting outgoing gravitational radiation. In this paper we describe a method of locating the past apparent horizon in these spacetimes, and discuss the properties of the horizon. We show that the past apparent horizon is non-timelike, and that its surface area is a decreasing function of the retarded time. A numerical simulation of the apparent horizon is also discussed.
As an application of the Cartan invariants obtained using the Karlhede algorithm, we study a simple subclass of the PP-wave spacetimes, the gravitational plane waves. We provide an invariant classification of these spacetimes and then study a few notable subcases: the linearly polarized plane waves, the weak-field circularly polarized waves, and another class of plane waves found by imposing conditions on the set of invariants. As we study these spacetimes we relate the invariant structure (i.e., Cartan scalars) to the physical description of these spacetimes using the geodesic deviation equat…
We demonstrate chaotic behavior of timelike, null and spacelike geodesics in non-homogeneous vacuum pp-wave solutions. This seems to be the first known example of a chaotic motion in exact radiative spacetime.
It is shown that, on a manifold with a Finsler metric of Lorentzian signature, the lightlike geodesics satisfy the following variational principle. Among all lightlike curves from a point (emission event) to a timelike curve (worldline of receiver), the lightlike geodesics make the arrival time stationary. Here ``arrival time'' refers to a parametrization of the timelike curve. This variational principle can be applied (i) to the vacuum light rays in an alternative spacetime theory, based on Finsler geometry, and (ii) to light rays in an anisotropic non-dispersive medium with a general-relativ…
Geodesic equations of the vacuum C-metric are derived and solved for various cases. The solutions describe the motion of timelike or null particles with conserved energy and angular momentum. Polar, nearly-circular orbits around weakly accelerated black holes may be regarded as a perturbation of circular Schwarzschild geodesics. Results indicate that circular Schwarzschild geodesics of radius $r_0>6m$ are stable under small uniform accelerations along the orbital plane. These stable orbits undergo small oscillations around $r_0$, behaving like a harmonic oscillator driven by a periodic force p…
We investigate the Plebański class of electrodynamical theories, i.e., theories of nonlinear vacuum electrodynamics that derive from a Lorentz-invariant Lagrangian (or Hamiltonian). In any such theory the light rays are the lightlike geodesics of two optical metrics that depend on the electromagnetic background field. A set of necessary and sufficient conditions is found whose fulfillment secures that the optical metrics are causal in the sense that the light rays are lightlike or timelike with respect to the underlying space-time metric. Thereupon we derive conditions on the Lagrangian, or th…
We study pure Lovelock vacuum and perfect fluid equations for Kasner-type metrics. These equations correspond to a single $N$th order Lovelock term in the action in $d=2N+1,\,2N+2$ dimensions, and they capture the relevant gravitational dynamics when aproaching the big-bang singularity within the Lovelock family of theories. Pure Lovelock gravity also bears out the general feature that vacuum in the critical odd dimension, $d=2N+1$, is kinematic; i.e. we may define an analogue Lovelock-Riemann tensor that vanishes in vacuum for $d=2N+1$, yet the Riemann curvature is non-zero. We completely cla…
We consider a (d+2)-dimensional class of Lorentzian geometries holographically dual to a relativistic fluid flow in (d+1) dimensions. The fluid is defined on a (d+1)-dimensional time-like surface which is embedded in the (d+2)-dimensional bulk space-time and equipped with a flat intrinsic metric. We find two types of geometries that are solutions to the vacuum Einstein equations: the Rindler metric and the Taub plane symmetric vacuum. These correspond to dual perfect fluids with vanishing and negative energy densities respectively. While the Rindler geometry is characterized by a causal horizo…
The vacuum, static, and spherically symmetric solutions in the mimetic Born-Infeld gravity are studied. The mimetic Born-Infeld gravity is a reformulation of the Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld (EiBI) model under the mimetic approach. Due to the mimetic field, the theory contains non-trivial vacuum solutions different from those in Einstein gravity. We find that with the existence of the mimetic field, the spacelike singularity inside a Schwarzschild black hole could be altered to a lightlike singularity, even though the curvature invariants still diverge at the singularity. Furthermore, in thi…
We explore a curious but simple variant of the Bronnikov-Ellis (BE) wormhole spacetime with a specific `red-shift function' (i.e. $g_{00}$) in the line element. The matter required to support such a geometry violates the local Null Energy Condition (NEC) only around the throat and the global Averaged Null Energy Condition (ANEC) integral along radial null geodesics may be adjusted to arbitrarily small negative values, using metric parameters. Properties of the line element manifest in the metric functions, curvature and the required matter stress energy are delineated. Further, exact null and …
We match the vacuum, stationary, cylindrically symmetric solution of Einstein's field equations with $Λ$, in a form recently given by Santos, as an exterior to an infinite cylinder of dust cut out of a Gödel universe. There are three cases, depending on the radius of the cylinder. Closed timelike curves are present in the exteriors of some of the solutions. There is a considerable similarity between the spacetimes investigated here and those of van Stockum referring to an infinite cylinder of rotating dust matched to vacuum, with $Λ=0$.
We present a maximally symmetric vacuum spacetime, which is locally isometric anti- de Sitter, admitting closed timelike curves appear after a definite instant of time i.e., a time-machine spacetime. The spacetime is regular, free-from curvature singularities and an $4D$ extension of the Misner space in curved spacetime with identical causality violating properties.
In the first part of this work we show a uniqueness result for globally hyperbolic spacetimes with a spacelike conformal boundary satisfying the vacuum Einstein equations with positive cosmological constant. Then we present applications of this result in the contexts of cosmic censorship and the initial value problem in general relativity. Further extensions of this result to non-vacuum solutions of the Einstein equations are also studied. On the other hand, the second half of this thesis deals with spacetimes with timelike boundary. We first develop the causal theory of such spacetimes and th…
We develop a general perturbative analysis on vacuum spacetimes which can be constructed by generating manifolds of revolution around a curve, and apply it to the Schwarzschild metric. The following different perturbations are carried out separately: 1) Non-rotating 2-spheres are added along a plane curve slightly deviated from the ``Schwarzschild line''; 2) General non-rotating topological 2-spheres are added along the ``Schwarzschild line'' 3) Slow-rotating 2-spheres are added along the ``Schwarzschild line''. For (1), we obtain the first order vacuum solution and show that no higher order s…
We reconsider the widely held view that the Mannheim--Kazanas (MK) vacuum solution for a static, spherically-symmetric system in conformal gravity (CG) predicts flat rotation curves, such as those observed in galaxies, without the need for dark matter. This prediction assumes that test particles have fixed rest mass and follow timelike geodesics in the MK metric in the vacuum region exterior to a spherically-symmetric representation of the galactic mass distribution. Such geodesics are not conformally invariant, however, which leads to an apparent discrepancy with the analogous calculation per…
