Facial Expression Recognition (FER) is a crucial task in affective computing, but its conventional focus on the seven basic emotions limits its applicability to the complex and expanding emotional spectrum. To address the issue of new and unseen emotions present in dynamic in-the-wild FER, we propose a novel vision-language model that utilises sample-level text descriptions (i.e. captions of the context, expressions or emotional cues) as natural language supervision, aiming to enhance the learning of rich latent representations, for zero-shot classification. To test this, we evaluate using zero-shot classification of the model trained on sample-level descriptions on four popular dynamic FER datasets. Our findings show that this approach yields significant improvements when compared to baseline methods. Specifically, for zero-shot video FER, we outperform CLIP by over 10\% in terms of Weighted Average Recall and 5\% in terms of Unweighted Average Recall on several datasets. Furthermore, we evaluate the representations obtained from the network trained using sample-level descriptions on the downstream task of mental health symptom estimation, achieving performance comparable or superior to state-of-the-art methods and strong agreement with human experts. Namely, we achieve a Pearson's Correlation Coefficient of up to 0.85 on schizophrenia symptom severity estimation, which is comparable to human experts' agreement. Affective computing and cognitive theory are widely used in modern human-computer interaction scenarios. Human faces, as the most prominent and easily accessible features, have attracted great attention from researchers. Since humans have rich emotions and developed musculature, there exist a lot of fine-grained expressions in real-world applications. However, it is extremely time-consuming to collect and annotate a large number of facial images, of which may even require psychologists to correctly categorize them. To the best of our knowledge, the existing expression datasets are only limited…

Most of the existing deep neural nets on automatic facial expression recognition focus on a set of predefined emotion classes, where the amount of training data has the biggest impact on performance. However, in the standard setting over-parameterised neural networks are not amenable for learning from few samples as they can quickly over-fit. In addition, these approaches do not have such a strong generalisation ability to identify a new category, where the data of each category is too limited and significant variations exist in the expression within the same semantic category. We embrace thes…

Most existing compound facial expression recognition (FER) methods rely on large-scale labeled compound expression data for training. However, collecting such data is labor-intensive and time-consuming. In this paper, we address the compound FER task in the cross-domain few-shot learning (FSL) setting, which requires only a few samples of compound expressions in the target domain. Specifically, we propose a novel cascaded decomposition network (CDNet), which cascades several learn-to-decompose modules with shared parameters based on a sequential decomposition mechanism, to obtain a transferabl…

Human emotions involve basic and compound facial expressions. However, current research on facial expression recognition (FER) mainly focuses on basic expressions, and thus fails to address the diversity of human emotions in practical scenarios. Meanwhile, existing work on compound FER relies heavily on abundant labeled compound expression training data, which are often laboriously collected under the professional instruction of psychology. In this paper, we study compound FER in the cross-domain few-shot learning setting, where only a few images of novel classes from the target domain are req…

The recent research of facial expression recognition has made a lot of progress due to the development of deep learning technologies, but some typical challenging problems such as the variety of rich facial expressions and poses are still not resolved. To solve these problems, we develop a new Facial Expression Recognition (FER) framework by involving the facial poses into our image synthesizing and classification process. There are two major novelties in this work. First, we create a new facial expression dataset of more than 200k images with 119 persons, 4 poses and 54 expressions. To our kn…

The vulnerability of face recognition systems to presentation attacks has limited their application in security-critical scenarios. Automatic methods of detecting such malicious attempts are essential for the safe use of facial recognition technology. Although various methods have been suggested for detecting such attacks, most of them over-fit the training set and fail in generalizing to unseen attacks and environments. In this work, we use transfer learning from the vision transformer model for the zero-shot anti-spoofing task. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated throu…
We present FacialFilmroll, a solution for spatially and temporally consistent editing of faces in one or multiple shots. We build upon unwrap mosaic [Rav-Acha et al. 2008] by specializing it to faces. We leverage recent techniques to fit a 3D face model on monocular videos to (i) improve the quality of the mosaic for edition and (ii) permit the automatic transfer of edits from one shot to other shots of the same actor. We explain how FacialFilmroll is integrated in post-production facility. Finally, we present video editing results using FacialFilmroll on high resolution videos.
Despite excellent progress has been made, the performance of deep learning based algorithms still heavily rely on specific datasets, which are difficult to extend due to labor-intensive labeling. Moreover, because of the advancement of new applications, initial definition of data annotations might not always meet the requirements of new functionalities. Thus, there is always a great demand in customized data annotations. To address the above issues, we propose the Few-Shot Model Adaptation (FSMA) framework and demonstrate its potential on several important tasks on Faces. The FSMA first acquir…
In this paper, Deterministic Cellular Automata (DCA) based video shot classification and retrieval is proposed. The deterministic 2D Cellular automata model captures the human facial expressions, both spontaneous and posed. The determinism stems from the fact that the facial muscle actions are standardized by the encodings of Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and Action Units (AUs). Based on these encodings, we generate the set of evolutionary update rules of the DCA for each facial expression. We consider a Person-Independent Facial Expression Space (PIFES) to analyze the facial expressions …

The paper compares the use of the Siamese network with contrastive loss and Triplet Network with triplet loss implementing the following architectures: Google/Inception architecture, 3D Convolutional Network (C3D), and a 2-D Long short-term memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neural Network. We make use of still images and sequences from videos for training the networks and compare the performances implementing the above architectures. The dataset used was the YouTube Face Database designed for i…

Talking head synthesis is an emerging technology with wide applications in film dubbing, virtual avatars and online education. Recent NeRF-based methods generate more natural talking videos, as they better capture the 3D structural information of faces. However, a specific model needs to be trained for each identity with a large dataset. In this paper, we propose Dynamic Facial Radiance Fields (DFRF) for few-shot talking head synthesis, which can rapidly generalize to an unseen identity with few training data. Different from the existing NeRF-based methods which directly encode the 3D geometry…
We propose Deep Distribution Transfer(DDT), a new transfer learning approach to address the problem of zero and few-shot transfer in the context of facial forgery detection. We examine how well a model (pre-)trained with one forgery creation method generalizes towards a previously unseen manipulation technique or different dataset. To facilitate this transfer, we introduce a new mixture model-based loss formulation that learns a multi-modal distribution, with modes corresponding to class categories of the underlying data of the source forgery method. Our core idea is to first pre-train an enco…

Over the past years, a substantial amount of work has been done on the problem of facial reenactment, with the solutions coming mainly from the graphics community. Head reenactment is an even more challenging task, which aims at transferring not only the facial expression, but also the entire head pose from a source person to a target. Current approaches either train person-specific systems, or use facial landmarks to model human heads, a representation that might transfer unwanted identity attributes from the source to the target. We propose head2headFS, a novel easily adaptable pipeline for …
While recent research has progressively overcome the low-resolution constraint of one-shot face video re-enactment with the help of StyleGAN's high-fidelity portrait generation, these approaches rely on at least one of the following: explicit 2D/3D priors, optical flow based warping as motion descriptors, off-the-shelf encoders, etc., which constrain their performance (e.g., inconsistent predictions, inability to capture fine facial details and accessories, poor generalization, artifacts). We propose an end-to-end framework for simultaneously supporting face attribute edits, facial motions and…

In this paper, we present a novel single shot face-related task analysis method, called Face-SSD, for detecting faces and for performing various face-related (classification/regression) tasks including smile recognition, face attribute prediction and valence-arousal estimation in the wild. Face-SSD uses a Fully Convolutional Neural Network (FCNN) to detect multiple faces of different sizes and recognise/regress one or more face-related classes. Face-SSD has two parallel branches that share the same low-level filters, one branch dealing with face detection and the other one with face analysis t…

Recent popular Role-Playing Games (RPGs) saw the great success of character auto-creation systems. The bone-driven face model controlled by continuous parameters (like the position of bones) and discrete parameters (like the hairstyles) makes it possible for users to personalize and customize in-game characters. Previous in-game character auto-creation systems are mostly image-driven, where facial parameters are optimized so that the rendered character looks similar to the reference face photo. This paper proposes a novel text-to-parameter translation method (T2P) to achieve zero-shot text-dri…
Semantic face editing of real world facial images is an important application of generative models. Recently, multiple works have explored possible techniques to generate such modifications using the latent structure of pre-trained GAN models. However, such approaches often require training an encoder network and that is typically a time-consuming and resource intensive process. A possible alternative to such a GAN-based architecture can be styleALAE, a latent-space based autoencoder that can generate photo-realistic images of high quality. Unfortunately, the reconstructed image in styleALAE d…

To detect bias in face recognition networks, it can be useful to probe a network under test using samples in which only specific attributes vary in some controlled way. However, capturing a sufficiently large dataset with specific control over the attributes of interest is difficult. In this work, we describe a simulator that applies specific head pose and facial expression adjustments to images of previously unseen people. The simulator first fits a 3D morphable model to a provided image, applies the desired head pose and facial expression controls, then renders the model into an image. Next,…
Animating a static face image with target facial expressions and movements is important in the area of image editing and movie production. This face reenactment process is challenging due to the complex geometry and movement of human faces. Previous work usually requires a large set of images from the same person to model the appearance. In this paper, we present a one-shot face reenactment model, FaR-GAN, that takes only one face image of any given source identity and a target expression as input, and then produces a face image of the same source identity but with the target expression. The p…

Although significant progress has been made to audio-driven talking face generation, existing methods either neglect facial emotion or cannot be applied to arbitrary subjects. In this paper, we propose the Emotion-Aware Motion Model (EAMM) to generate one-shot emotional talking faces by involving an emotion source video. Specifically, we first propose an Audio2Facial-Dynamics module, which renders talking faces from audio-driven unsupervised zero- and first-order key-points motion. Then through exploring the motion model's properties, we further propose an Implicit Emotion Displacement Learner…
Audio to Video generation is an interesting problem that has numerous applications across industry verticals including film making, multi-media, marketing, education and others. High-quality video generation with expressive facial movements is a challenging problem that involves complex learning steps for generative adversarial networks. Further, enabling one-shot learning for an unseen single image increases the complexity of the problem while simultaneously making it more applicable to practical scenarios. In the paper, we propose a novel approach OneShotA2V to synthesize a talking person vi…
